This was one of my childhood favorites.Imagine my shock finding out how rare it is.
+1 . And everyone laughed at me when I talked about it... because of the name.
I found this game through an emu pack I downloaded as a kid. It was titled 'Lickle' and holy crap was it the best thing NES had to offer. I was always into 16-bit titles, since they're basically just souped up versions of the previous gen, but Little Samson played like a 16-bit banger on 8-bit hardware; a real gem.
I love this game. I had no clue it existed until some person who didn't know what they had brought it into a used games, movies, and music store I used to work at. The store's automated system was offering five dollar,s the max amount that that chain offered for games for systems no longer in production, but I threw in an extra dollar and made it mine. It's in my top ten NES games as far as fun goes, and it's one I always break out whenever I have friends over who are into retro gaming.
I had no clue it was rare until i heard Pat the NES Punk talking about it once. While it's tempting to gouge someone for a decent chunk of change, I like having the game in my collection and being able to play it when I want.
Its just a videogame. Honestly it isn't even worth the plastic it is made out of. Its like a rare comic book. Its not easy to get its value.
Bought this game back in the early 90's. Still have it and play it occasionally. My absolute favorite game for the NES. Never knew it was worth this much or so sought after O.o
When the game released, stores were unwilling to give SNES and Genesis shelf space away to late arriving NES games.. The distributors that purchased the game were left trying to dump what they ordered. The game was dumped in Mexico in large quantities. Most of them ending up at Julio Cepeda's. The equivalent of Toys R Us in the US. I walked in a Julio Cepeda in 2002 and walked out with 18 sealed copies for $360.00. I sold them in the mid 2000's. How I wished I kept a few.
How many did you save?
IT KILLS ME how many amazing games sold like ass and took their companies with them just because of nonexistant advertising and marketing.
Most of my Top 10 games were subject to this, and I got a lot of them off clearance racks, actually!
Yep. Some were just poorly distributed
And your top 10? Finish the story man
Agreed, I'd like to have known what that list looks like. May find a gem I'd never played.
Shoot i remember some games i never existed because of poor advertising. I use to have warewolf the last warrior for the nes . that was a great game . i gotnit a k.b toy store in Atlantic city in a mall for 10 bucks . i picked street fighter 2010 in mom and pop store for 5 bucks
There were ads for these great late-NES Taito games. Sometimes I will see one if I am flipping through a video game magazine from that era and all I can do is shake my head and think "Why did you not clearly see the future and go buy like...20 copies of Little Samson and Dinosaur Peak?!?"
This game was wonderful! Super tight controls, great music, vivid illustrations and great level design.
A mouse throwing bombs? That sounds familiar, just give it some sweet shades.
*cough* mouser *cough*
No shit. Thanks for explaining the joke guys.
Mark Marchesini No problem I'll be here all week.(besides not everyone knows who mouser is)
M O U S E R
It was my favorite chapter of the Bible
His game has literally the best graphics I've ever seen on NES.
Revenge of the Joker is much better than this.
It arrived far too late though in 1992.... Most of us had already upgraded 2 years earlier we had Super mario world on the SNES in 1990.. Which has far better graphics and gameplay than Little Samson or any NES game..
@@legendarygamer570 Batman the video game is better than revenge of the joker
Battletoads is better
Holy shit, just watching the gameplay and hearing about the story makes me want to own it now. :(
+Gaming With Balance - You're best bet would be a modded Wii. Mine runs NES and SNES emulators. I'd rather pay $40 for a used Wii and $15 for an SD card that will hold the full library of games than $600 for one game.
Tell me a price! Cartridge only.
You actually make an effort to pronounce Japanese names correctly and that is both great respect for the creators of the content and attention to detail. I really enjoy your content and there are many things that are praiseworthy about your work, I just wanted to mention this often overlooked detail.
Just beat this game. It is as good as everyone says it is, though the ending is way harder than any game should ever be. The difficulty curve takes a steep incline once you get to the last major boss before the final levels.
MaxxSkywalker
That's why God invented the Game Genie ;-)
Fun fact, the mouse’s bombs hurts the last boss the most, but if you was hit once, say good bye.
The name really hurt the game, I walked past the rental a hundred times when I was a kid and specifically because the title sounded like a bible game for children.
+Nicholas Scott I almost didn't watch the video because I thought it was a Bible game.
So Norm here was VERY RIGHT when he said that killed it. (Though Lickle would have gone just as horribly in the US, I'd have thought it was porn or have been too embarrassed to buy it)
+K. “Dwessie” Charrette Iagree with you totally!
+Nicholas Scott Really bad marketing from an amazing company :(
+Nicholas Scott Indeed. I never even knew this existed
Curse you, Wisdom Tree, and your precedent for crappy religiously-themed games!
I would have played this game--if it came out before 1992 when I was knee-deep in mastering the combos of Street Fighter II CE
Watching this in 2022, Little Samson is now 2624 dollars.
This game is awesome.
It's in my top 5 nes games.
The visuals are amazing, the controls are spot on, the great platforming and variety of gameplay make the game incredibly fun.
I own two copies of it : a PAL nes one and a Japanese famicom one (I bought both of them back when they were worth from 40 to 50 bucks).
This game deserves a remake. ASAP.
I really want somebody to buy/get the rights and do it!
Or you know, you could just play the original.
maybe something like the wonderboy remake
Remake? Why? The game is already gorgeous.
@@rodrigoalves-cg6xv if not a remake, a port atleast
You know I love this guys work, it's comprehensive and well written. Heck if the show had some funding for production value this show would fit right in along side some PBS programming block. Well done.
Such a cool gaming story! Leaving a huge company to make games you are passionate about is pretty awesome! Those guys took the leap and even though the studio shut down they made something great!
Love your videos man keep em coming!
Reminds me of The Guardian Legend. An obscure game that should be archived in the Library of Congress.
6:37 it's the dragon boss from Mega Man 2!
This is the first time i saw one of your videos. I must say i am impressed. Looking forward to seeing more from you in the future.
I still have the cart on my shelf. Incredible game, and a great challenge in Difficult mode. The boss fights got me so pumped as a kid - gritty horror themed sprites and that badass intro to the boss theme...
When you fight the final boss on normal mode, you'll always take damage after he fires his screen covering red boast but I found out that if you walk over to him and start firing right away, you can fire off a ton of hits before the boss shoots off
i still have my i got from yardsale i brought it for ten bucks
Joey Viramontes lie
I found mine in the trash for free on the moon.
EMFS lol that was some of the funniest shit I've read in a while.
Kind of sad how it's usually years after release, a good game is really recognized and then becomes rare.
"So no one notices Samson huh, I'll give them pictures. Pictures...are...FOREVER!" - Samson, Camp Lazlo
Never opened my copy and still have it til this day. Must be worth a good buck
Never opened? It's worth I think $3,000 or more now.
Love this game I got it at a pawn shop a while ago for five bucks.
Tony Villarreal Nope not a reproduction already checked I have had it since I was like 10 and I am 20 now.
+Micah Johnson Doubt it
+Micah Johnson My copy came from a hole in the wall video store that had leftover games from the time they rented them out. Only $2!
+Micah Johnson I got mine for free from a friend's uncle who was renovating his home and looking to make space. He didn't think very highly of the game, or any of his other NES titles. I then turned around and sold his entire gaming collection for $1 million. Then I woke up and called Micah Johnson a liar. Life's short, have an argument!
+ReMeDy I can't believe the hate my comment is getting just because I got lucky.
Those graphics are beautiful. Just compare to the original super mario on NES
Samson tune reminds me of Capcom's Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers 1st stage music for the NES. Another obscure gem nobody is talking about.
Great review Gaming Historian.
I completely missed this game. Looks incredible
I own the game! Didn't know it was this rare.
gjoerulv It's worth around 1000$-2500$
@@hollow3312 I have one to ..... for sale
4:26 FUCK YEA!
I've been trying to remember the name of this game for 15 years...
is it worth it, playing it again ?
Imagine not even knowing the name of a game and finding it on youtube eventually after 20 years...
I used to play this on an emulator when I was about 11. Im not sure if the title was in english. I just remembered specific mechanics. I played it again recently was still fun.
@@Ataxamazing I only played the game once at a relative's house when I was about 6 years old. The game was called kaiketsu yamancharu 3. I only remembered two things about it: 1.The character had a move where he used a stick to balance himself while jumping with it to avoid enemies. 2.One boss had the theme of a blue penguin or scubadiver. (Found out it was a scubadiver). Found the game by luck on youtube by related videos on a game called ducktales suggested by people I asked from youtube.(ducktales character has a pogo jump move similar to what I described to them)
I just became a proud owner of this game!! (SCN PAL-B). I cleaned it and did a test run just to see if the cart was ok. Worked like a charm and what a fun game it was!!
I really want to play this! I have to disagree on the graphics, though. They're, well... too good.
I love the sprites of the main characters, but the bosses and some of the environments are too busy, and a little hard on the eyes. I think that the clean and cartoony look is much more suited for extended gameplay.
Detail works on higher end systems that can have smooth and subtle details, but adding too much detail to the NES just makes it look like a pixelated mess.
Maybe it's just has more to do with my personal preference for clean, cartoony design, though. I might be biased. :)
I do really want to play this though... the main characters are rad, and the gameplay looks super fun.
What's rom with you
Little Samson and Cocoron are two of my favorite NES/Famicon games I've never heard of when I was young
I think this is by far my favorite game for the NES. My mother gave it to me for Christmas when i was 6, and i´ve played it at least a hundred times since. I''ve never gotten bored of it. It's good to know i´m not the only one who thinks this game rocks. Great video.
It's been three years since this video has been posted and the price for getting a copy of Little Samson has become even higher than it was back then. I understand that some collectors are able to pay hundreds of dollars for it but most consumers can't even pay a third of that on any game. You might as well get a rom and use an emulator or the NES Powerpak (or a different flash card device) to play the game. It's not a Nintendo first party game so chances are very low that this will ever be released on the Eshop or Virtual Console.
I wish those who want to have the cart good luck, cause you are going to need it if you want to get a copy for less than 400 bucks.
Workingplayer53 There are loads of third party games on virtual console.
+ejswe Yeah but Nintendo is often really strict on what goes on virtual console for some fucking reason. So I completely doubt it.
as of December 2017, cartridges on ebay are over $1k. but there are a bunch of bootleg cartridges from China for about $30. hell, maybe ill try one of those, lol.
Its now worth about $1000
Well that's a load of shit
I think you meant to write 'Its not worth about $1000'.
You don't know how happy it makes me to see a brand new episode.
That moment of joy at 4:27 really made the video.
Noah's Ark on the Nintendo was awesome. Anyone shying away from religious games missed out on that one back in the day.
To be fair I thought it was a religious game as well.
I've been going through the Gaming Historian videos to watch for updates. This is the first one with an actual microphone, and it looks like there's a new camera, too.
Woah! I had this in one of those bootleg(?) GBC cartridges. In the game selection, it was named Lickle. The most memorable parts for me were the songs and my always choosing to favor the dragon.
I hope it goes on wii u virtual console
I think it’s interesting even if many games aren’t religious that spiritual stuff is still everywhere.
You can’t deny SEGAs inspiration for “7 chaos emeralds” or Dragon Ball Zs idea of “7 dragon balls” comes from the sacred importance of “7” and “perfection” in Judaism and sacred numerology. No coincidence Sonic becomes perfect with 7 emeralds.
Also the character “Chaos 0” undeniably comes from the chaos serpent Apophis of Egyptology or the aquatic chaos serpent Tiamat from ancient Chaldea AKA Assyriology.
New age themes or Japanese spirituality is nearly everywhere in the background of video games.
Finally I think it’s interesting how Nintendo of America had to censor a lot of the Early Zelda titles for Christian and Muslim symbolism lol
Henry Tetreault nothing wrong with spirituality or religion in moderation it is important to an individual to be intune with one's own spirit it can help heal the mind and body
Another great episode. THANK YOU!
Great documentary. I love hearing about why certain games are rare. Thanks for the insight!
I really doubt that gamers were put off cause of the titles connection to the bible. I didn't even know there was a Samson in the bible, I'm sure most gamers wouldn't know either xD
You had to be there, kid. The mid-1990s saw a TON of Christian shovelware rushed to market to appeal to parents who were in the middle of the "video games corrupting our kids" scare of the era. That made kids extremely wary of anything like, well... a video game with the name "Samson" on the front. Trust me, this game's name would have mattered a LOT back then.
@@MegaZeta
i mean I was a single digit number in age back then
Found Little Samson in the collection years after my older siblings were done with it
The N64 was already out when I finally played NES and Megadrive
The whole Religious games never had a foothold on those later consoles somehow. I'm guessing making bootleg games for N64 was much harder.
really? I'm not good enough to oil up and hit the gym with? You have to find someone else?
Wow nearly 10 years old and still just as good as when it first was uploaded
Excellent information, great job, I had forgot this title in my list of best nes games.
Whoever Is reading this have a wonderful day :) stay positive and follow your dreams!
I really hope you are doing good
You too random internet citizen!
a positive and uplifting youtube comment?!, even more rare than little samson.
gg
oh you ('~.~)// thank you so much!
I read it :)
I was thinking it anther bibble game :D
like double bibble?
It’s crazy how some of his videos still don’t even have 500,000 views. I’m surprised that people who subscribe don’t watch his entire catalog just out of sheer curiosity. I go through all of his videos about once a year and have been watching him since he was on retroware with the Happy Video Game Nerd.
I started going through them all a few weeks ago!
You're awesome thanks man!!!! Love your content!
your so right when i first saw the title i thought it was gonna be a shitty bible game

I bought this thing 2 years ago in a yardsale for 100 Ft (Not even 1 dollar). The game is pretty mediocre, not my favourite. I have an idea: this game only worth MAX 30 dollars but not so more. I advise to use an emulator, or better yet... play this game on a Powerpak, since it is essencially like playing the real game on a console.
I have this game stashed in my game cabinet; it was always one of my favorites. You know what, I think I'll go play it right now!
One of the best use of sprites on the nes.
Ahh, nothing worse than people overvaluing things that shouldn't be overvalued. I almost feel bad for anyone who pays a significant price for very, very common binary code inside of a plastic shell or on original disc for that matter. Very bad future investment. There's nothing wrong with stockpiling full rom sets and using emulators, writable media or flash carts. The experience is virtually the exact same, minus a printed sticker to look at inside of an extremely common and worthless ABS casing. Plus you don't invest (and risk losing) time, money and space. Allowing you to concentrate on meaningful aspects of your life. Buy new games, not old ones. Developers get nothing out of that, all you're doing is throwing money at someone who doesn't deserve it.
Chris Sousa Apples and oranges. Comics are printed on paper, very flimsy, easily degraded paper. Sports cards are similar. That is why (very few) old ones that survived are worth a lot of money, because they somehow survived several decades in a certain condition. That said, 99.9% of comics and sports cards are worthless these days. NES games are a dime a dozen. Obviously it's not the actual game that people feel the need to collect, considering any game can be downloaded in seconds and played in all its glory on either an emulator or single flash cartridge. They're after the same old plastic shell with a certain label to add to their collection, and will likely never play it. It makes no sense.
And you're mistaking, I don't want to collect physical objects at all. So my attitude towards it is great. Life is better when simplified and organized. Collectors don't really get this. I understand enjoying looking at artwork, but most of the time simply viewing a picture of it achieves the same satisfaction as actually possessing the object you wish to look at.
Chris Sousa
Waste of money. Games like this will fall down in value substantially in the next few years.
salozmen29 Good to see someone with logic posting. Little Samson.. Couldn't even play it for 10 minutes.
Ha Hah Couldnt play it for 10 minutes? Ya some people suck at games, but if you practised you could get more than 10 minutes into it, sorry this game is too good for you.
Kevster012 Or maybe I just have better things to do with my life than waste time mastering old NES games just because they didn't sell a lot of copies and collectors think it's cool because it's rare? I grew up with the NES Mr. Kevster. No doubt before you were ever born. Don't tell me who sucks at video games.
As detailed as the graphics are I dare say they're too detailed. They look muddy and ugly. They don't evoke the look of a "fun game."
3 years late, but Supply was an issue in my area.
I read that article in NP and was hooked on the concept and was actively trying to hunt the game down... for 2 years I was looking for it and waiting for it to be released, and I never saw it in the local EB or other stores that carried NES games in my area.
Great video as always, this game looks awesome
nice to see the Happy Video Game Nerd in the video, and your work is fantastic Norman, you are one of the few to talk about videogames without cursing or trying to make stupid jokes but at the same time your videos are interesting and enjoyable. Kudos!
A great video, as always. Now I need to find that game, it looks awesome.
As always, good stuff my friend!
i used to love this when i was a kid god the graphics and the many chars u can choose damn its awesome!! Still have the cartridge somewhere in the attic!
I wonder if my friend still has that game.. I LOVED this game so hard. Played the crap out of it as a kid.
Great video, thanks!
Fun to watch and learn, just found all my oldest games and am searching them. (Moms house flooded no more free storage) Even made a few videos of me on here looking at the stash. It is fun to collect things, and people tend to pay a lot of money for things they find amusing, always have...
Got the game when it was new - loved it
I played this game as a kid all time.Feel out of my chair as i discovered how rare it is.
perhaps my favorite video of yours bro. damn i want this game.
Little Samson (Lickle) is a masterpiece for me! This game changed me, this game made me a gamer.
great video, man! never played this, but i've heard about it. Looks fun
The owner of my local retro game store has this game and every other North American NES game ever released. He even has the demo unit, and that’s just his NES collection. It’s truly insane how many demo units specifically that the guy owns, one for every console you can imagine. He has everything, it’s like a museum in his house 😂
I like your videos! Greetings from Brazil!
Game is AWESOME. I love reviewers like you
Nostalgia 1907 was also released for the NEC PC-9801, and FM Towns computers x68000's rivals
hmmm, the characters and their abilities are somewhat similar to the ones in Wonder Boy 3, the best game on SMS, which was released in 1989, I believe.
There's a reason this video has 0 dislikes, Norm. You're really good at what you do. I've been collecting since I was 16 (I'm 19 now, going on 20). In fact, I just received a near mint Virtual Boy with a few games for Christmas! I always enjoy those who have knowledge to share and a passion like mine. I've seen every one of your video's, and I'm an avid subscriber. Keep them coming man! - Mike, from Central Michigan University.
Another great video, thanks. Have to admit I knew nothing of this game until now.
Great review as always :-D
No way to play this now without an emulator. I can't believe it costs so much. This looks like my kind of game.
Keep up the videos Norm. You have had one of the best web-series of videos for years now.
Easily my favorite non-Mario Platformer; I played it because Taito did such an amazing job w/Bubble Bobble & Space Invaders.
Didnt know this exist, thanks GH
Can you please make more review videos like these, I really like them and it's how I find this nice nes games
I hope it'll be easier to find digitally in terms of the Switch's NES roster, or even emulation, which is where I found this, several years ago. It's criminal it didn't get a lot of attention!
This game looks gorgeous!
this is one of my favorite nes games I remember being like eight years old and me and my brother having a blast! great video!
This is a well-researched, reasonable video. A true rarity on CZcams.
Incredible insight into an. obscure game. Thank you very much. Have you thought of doing a detailed episode on LUFIA AND THE FORTRESS OF DOOM? I feel this would make for a very interesting episode.
Nice review!
I've never heard of your channel until now! *subs and immediately starts watching more*
I actually have this game and found out it was rare when I took it in to trade in and was very pleasantly surprised
