Masale Bhaat (Masala Bhaat) is a spicy vegetarian rice recipe with lot of goodness of vegetables. Masala Rice is a perfect combination of nutrition and taste! Watch and learn and do try this healthy and delicious recipe. Do post your comments below.
INGREDIENTS
3 cups ambe mohar rice
1” cinnamon
1 bay leaf
1 tsp mustard seeds
1 tsp cumin seeds
A pinch of asafetida
Few curry leaves
2 medium onions finely chopped
½ tsp turmeric powder
1 tsp ginger paste
1½ tsp goda masala
1 tsp garam masala
1½ tsp chilli powder
2 medium potatoes cut into 1” cubes
1 cup of fresh green peas
1 cup of ivy gourd cut lengthwise
¼ cup grated fresh coconut
¼ cup finely chopped coriander
3 tbsp oil
Salt to taste
METHOD:
- Soak the rice in water for an hour
- Heat oil and add the bay leaf, mustard seeds. Once the mustard seeds crackle add the cumin seeds. Asafetida and the curry leaves.
- Add the onion and fry till the onion turns golden.
- Add the turmeric powder, ginger paste, the goda masala, garam masala, chilli powder, potatoes, peas, ivy gourd salt, rice and sauté it for 2-3 minutes
- Add 6 cups of water and cook till the rice and the vegetables are done.
- Garnish with the coriander and coconut and serve it hot
Goda Masala
Ingredients
1 Kg Coriander Seeds
1/4 kg cumin seeds
1/4 kg dry red chillies
1/4g sesame seeds
100g poppy seeds
50g cumin seeds
20g cinnamon
20g cloves
20g green cardamom
20g nutmeg
20g star anise
20g cassia buds
20g stone flower
20g bay leaves
200g dry coconut
Method
- Roast all the dry ingredients separately, except poppy seeds, coriander seeds, sesame seeds & the dry red chillies in a little oil
- Cool all the ingredients & grind to a fine powder & mix well
- Cool once more & store in an airtight container

I tried Bharli Tondli & it tasted good (except that my attempt made tondi watery as I ended up adding excess water for tondli to cook)...
In this recipe is it okay if we add cooked rice into the masala preparation & then keep it to cook for little lesser time?

Fabulous. The only issue for me is the non-availability of the Goda masala. Is it okay to skip it or is the dish not the same without it.

brinjal is inseparable part of this recipe in authentic Maharashtrian recipe ... but yes its a personal choice ... best is not to add Garam masala ....only goda masala makes it the taste best

Traditionally you do not add onion:garlic as the bhat is made in poojas and lagnas.
mam without goda masala proportions,its not possible to cook this recipe..pls show how to make that masala..

Is the onion necessary??I heard maharashtrians make this rice on Pooja days and in typical maharashtrian weddings where they cook their food without onion and garlic.
