Think about all the work it took to build all these facilities - the planning, the financing, the construction and finally the maintenance. Really an unbelievable achievement when you think about it. And the system has been working, in some places, for well over a century!

Definitely enjoy these awesome videos! The amazing complexity and infrastructure of the NYC subway always fascinates me, even to this day. Since its opening in 1904 with the IRT, then later the BRT/BMT and finally the IND system, despite the issues it faced, and continues to face, it still remains the most efficient way to move vast numbers of people around the city. And I'm saying that as an old guy and a native New Yorker, born and raised. A NYC subway fan through and through!! Thanks to the NYC Transit employees for keeping the system running!! NYC wouldn't be the great city it is without its subway system. Thanks for these amazing videos! Keep them coming.

    • @mitch4527
      @mitch4527 Před rokem +5

The newest section of the entire route is the portion from the Manhattan Bridge through Grand Street and connecting to the IND system at Broadway-Lafayette. That is the Chrystie Street Connection, opened in 1967. The route from Broadway-Lafayette to the 145th Street terminal is original IND trackage from 1932. The Brighton line itself (the open portion starting at Prospect Park) dates to the 1800’s, when it was a steam-powered excursion line. Indeed, the tunnel from 7th Avenue to Prospect Park was nearing completion when the Malbone Street Wreck occurred in 1918. You can see an out of service Franklin Avenue shuttle train on the local track in this video as the camera train enters Prospect Park station. That train must have entered the station through the death tunnel.

Ah, yes! I watched the A train video yesterday, and now just finished the B Brighton Line! Just plain fun! Keep it up for this dyed-in-the-wool New Yorker who grew up since the 1950s riding the subway, and becoming a major fan. I followed the trip, using my 2022 copy of "The Tracks of the New York City Subway", following every switch, crossover and other trackwork along the way!! Love how clear and crisp your videos are, and while watching, you simply have to TURN THE VOLUME UP to capture the sound and the real feel of riding the train! Keep up the great work and look forward to more!! My home subway line is the 6, Pelham Bay Line!

B train extension, from, Bedford Pk Blvd.
It would go with the D until it branches off straight from the starting point of the turn to Norwood - 205 Street.
Along Grand Concourse, until it goes under Moshulu Parkway, and catches and goes along Dekalb Avenue.
    First stop:
Gun Hill Rd - accessible, side platform, ordinary design, and connection to the Bx10, Route 4, Route 20, Route 20X, and Route 21 bus services.
The line would keep, going along Dekalb Avenue until it ends, and the train would go deep under some buildings.
    Around 100 - 120 ft deep.
    Next stop,
Jerome Av - accessible, island platform, cool designs, and connection to the 4 train at Woodlawn. Connection is also available to the Bx16, Bx34, BxM4, Route 4, Route 20, Route 20X, and Route 21 bus services.
Deep underground, going under a big forestland.
Once fully out of the woods, the B would make a stop at…
E 233 St - accessible, side platform, ordinary design, and connection to the Bx16, Bx34, and BxM4 bus services.
The B would go under some buildings diagonally until it reaches the next stop-
Woodlawn - Katonah Av - accessible, side platform, ordinary design, and connection to the Bx31, Bx34, and BxM4 bus services.
The line would go north along Katonah Avenue.
    Next stop-
McLean - King Avs - accessible, side platform, ordinary design, and no connections.
The line would now give west along King Avenue, deep and fast.
When King Avenue comes to a stop, the B train would go under buildings, and make a stop at..
Central Park Av - accessible, side platform, ordinary design, and connection to the Route 20 and Route 20X bus services.
The station entrances would be somewhere at Cumberland - Huntington Drives, since there can be no entrances inside buildings.
The line, after going under Central Park Avenue, would make its way under some buildings until it goes along Midland Avenue.
    Stop at-
Midland Av - Wendover Rd - accessible, side platform, ordinary design, and no connections.
    Along Midland Avenue…
    Under a park!
    Stop at-
Lincoln Pk - accessible, side platform, nice architecture, and no connections.
The stop would be somewhere at Teres - Midland Avenue.
    Up along Midland until…
    Last stop-
Yonkers Av - accessible, island platform, ordinary design, and connection to the Route 7 bus.
    Well, hope you enjoyed!

This ride was another fantastic trip, from the front of an R-68. They may not have the classic charm of an R-42 or the retired R-32, but they do make for a pretty good ride from 145 Street to Brighton Beach. The long tunnel stretches, crossing the Manhattan Bridge, and then the open spot thru Brooklyn, it was a good ride from start to finish.

The southern part of the Brighton Line, running on elevated ground rather than a trestle, reminds me more of a suburban commuter line than a rapid transit line. 30:25 A million dollar view !! The D train tunnel on the left is an original 1915 BMT (or was it BRT ?) tunnel for the Manhattan Bridge, but the tunnel span on the right that spans three tracks (B and Q above, and N down in the underpass) had to come from the 1950's grade separation of the flat junction. I have a continuing project to work out how the grade separation was accomplished; I was not in New York City in the 1950's. My body was born in London, England in 1956. I want to know how they accomplished this feat stage by stage. Some day, I will have to go to the NYCTA directly to do research. I still have not seen an original flat junction track diagram pre 1950's. Aarre Peltomaa

Based on en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brooklyn%E2%80%93Manhattan_Transit_Corporation#/media/File%3A1914_BRT_proposed_map.jpg it appears that the express tracks north of Dekalb used the north tracks of the Manhattan bridge. While the local tracks went south, looping back into Brooklyn through the Montague tunnels. There was no reason for the BRT/BMT to facilitate a complex IND like interchange.

For those wondering why all B trains short-turn at Brighton Beach instead of continue all the way to Coney Island, the local and express tracks merge into each other right after Ocean Parkway so the B would have to merge with the Q and vice versa. It may not seem like a bad idea, until you realize the frequencies of both lines combined would be too many trains to turn around at Coney Island in time. Also, Ocean Parkway has no crossovers, so Brighton Beach acts as the usual terminus instead.

    • @anonymous3738
      @anonymous3738 Před 19 dny

And why do the tracks merge? Originally, the upper level of West Eighth St was served by express trains and the lower level by local trains and each set of tracks ended at Coney Island which is evident by the empty trackways between Ocean Pkwy’s local trackways and West Eighth St’s lower level. The Culver Line originally ended at Ave X but when it was extended to Coney Island, they had to take over West Eighth St’s lower level, which is, or rather was the Brighton Line’s local tracks, to open a path for the Culver Line to extend to Coney Island and the Brighton Line was left with only its express tracks on that section. As a result, the local tracks were merged into what was originally just the express tracks and are now both sets of tracks fused from that point. And, again, due to high frequencies, local and express trains don’t merge as they’re now supposed to as there’s no room for them to turn around. Yes, they do share tracks from DeKalb Ave to Prospect Park but they don’t turn around on that section so there’s enough room to share.
