To be fair, I started with the same blaster that my kids each have :)
The gun comes apart very easily, with a precision screw driver.
There are lots of small springs and screws inside. Be sure to take photos of everything before disassembling.
I used a Dremel tool to sand off all of the names, logos and warnings.
Then I smoothed out the surfaces (kind of) with a sanding block.
I laid all of the parts out to paint.
I used a gray primer made for plastics, for the first layer.
Then I put down two coats of metallic silver spray paint. Some pieces were black instead.
After the paint was all dry, I started the first layer of detailing.
As a first pass, I pushed acrylic flat black paint down into the recesses of the surface, and wiped away the excess.
I added minimal color to a few parts for highlighting and detail.
I stole the inverter from some EL wire that I had.
I chopped off the end, and stripped the wires.
After disassembling it, I unsoldered the wires, and re-soldered them so that they came out the back side of the inverter.
I drilled a small hole to allow the wires to pass through the case.
I cut a single section from a long LED strip.
This strip was soldered directly to the power inverter.
Now I had a very small strip of lighting to use in the barrel.
I drilled a hole in the bottom of the gun for feeding in the wire.
I used a Dremel to cut out a channel, from that hole, to house the wires.
A little hard to be trimmed from the barrel to allow the wires to come through.
I stuck the LED strip in the barrel using it's adhesive back.
Now the barrel had a light!
I fit the barrel back in place, making sure the wire/LED stayed in place.
Using a small tool, I pushed the wires into the channel I'd made so they wouldn't get in the way of reassembly.
Then I put everything back in place and closed the gun.
Before moving on, I tested the lights.
To mount the inverter and sculpt the gun, I used Apoxie Sculpt.
It's a two part, 1-to-1 mixture. Be sure to mix it thoroughly, per the instructions.
I used s small amount to mount the inverter to the gun body.
Then I added small amounts to merge the surfaces and slightly customize the shape. You could go crazy here and make the gun totally different.
I added a big block to the handle to make it fit an adult hand better.
Using a little water made it very easy to modify the shape and smooth out the surface.
It takes 24 hours for the Apoxie Sculpt to fully cure.
Make sure you're safe when sanding the Apoxie Sculpt, the dust is VERY fine.
I feathered the edges of the material with some flexible sand paper.
Large flat areas were sanded with a sanding block and orbital sander.
I even re-sculpted a little with the Dremel tool.
I used compressed air and a tack cloth to remove all of the dust.
After masking off most of the gun, I primed the new sections.
They also received the same paint as before.
I should have masked along body lines where possible to minimize touch up. A little sanding and paint blended it well.
Then I began dry brushing all of the edges.
Dry brushing creates the illusion of worn off paint, giving it a "used" look on high spots and edges.
I used a light silver on the high spots and flat black in the low spots.
I also brushed on LOTS of black/grey paint, then smeared and wiped it off with paper towels. This fills small gaps and gives it a dirty/greasy look.
The more layers and variation, the most aged and distressed the item will look.
Here it is all finished! It turned out great for a first try (I thought).

Only problem I see is that you can't take it apart after you've done that, which you may have to do at some point. It's a constant problem when trying to shape blasters with putty.

Clearly, Bob has never found the Nerf modding community on the internet. People can make guns look really badass and still work completely fine.
My gun does work completely fine. I'm fully aware of the modding community, but this video was an experiment in painting and weathering, not Nerf modding.

Hey Bob! I actually do this kind of stuff on my channel and wanted to give you some tips for the next time you do this.
- Before painting, you should sand the blaster with around 220 grit and then clean it after (I use rubbing alcohol). This gives the paint a better surface to adhere to and can prevent some inconsistencies in the paint.
- All body work should be done before painting- and you should do it in sections so you can still open up the blaster later for maintenance or modifying. Sanding it after having the internals put in can mess with the lubricant inside the plunger tube, or make the internal mechanisms stinky/crunchy.
- You should look into clear coating (specifically before putting everything together) It will keep the blaster from having a sticky feel with some paints, and protect the paint if you drop it or hit it against something.

Freeform Air from Smooth-On works like Apoxie Sculpt but weighs very little. I've been using it as a filler for props and repairs for years. it's hard to sculpt fine details into, but it carves and sands very nicely. Great video, welcome to the world of prop-making!

if you could only have one the circular saw is capable of everything that a table saw can do, it just takes a little more effort for some of it. It's more portable, and significantly cheaper. Totally should've tried modding, there are some very simple ones available, like the full-barrel mod which lets the barrel come out fully for easier reloading, or removing air suppressors, or spring replacements. Your kids won't even be able to compete!

A lot of the people I know of who make custom twisty puzzles, like Rubik's Cube shape mods, use Apoxie Sculpt to fill things out. Or at least, they used to before 3D printing. They still do in a lot of cases for prototyping.
Nicely done Bob! I use that apoxie sculpt on my animals. Mostly for gluing in the eyes and building eyelids. It works really well in my opinion.

When I mask of something like that to be painted. I use aluminum foil to cover most of the part and just tape the edges. The foil really shapes nicely around irregular surface and stay that way.

I just used Apoxy Sculpt for the first time this past weekend and it is great stuff to work with, really like working with it. For filling seams though, I use "Bondo Glazing and Spot Putty". I've never used anything that sands so easily! It's not good for big gaps, but that hasn't stopped me from building up layers to fill anything. Excellent wood filler too if you're going to paint your wood projects.
+Nick Vildis Cool! Yeah, Bondo has been mentioned several times. I've used it before, but not in this type of instance. Is the glazing and spot putty a two part? or just a one part in a tube?
Just one part, right out of the tube. Cheap too, I picked up a tube for around $4-5 Canadian (at an auto parts store). Shop around because I've seen other stores sell it for $12+ for the same tube.

Lord draconical makes props that are functional and also do more things like this whereas coop makes blasters more hvz practical, and so does drac. But drac makes props also. mag is in the middle and does the same style as coop, in my oppinio.

Free Form AIR from Smooth-On is a nice lightweight Epoxy/Apoxie type sculpting product that works pretty well.
Cool video! One question-- why did you use an inverter for the LED strip? Aren't the LEDs DC?
Super Make Something Good question. LED strips are usually DC, whereas EL wire requires AC, hence the need for an inverter. Strange that one would be able to change the power source freely between the two. I would be very curious to know how that works.

If you're looking into prop making, try out Sink Tube Sabers, making light sabers from plumbing pipe. Just take the sound boards out of old/broken toy lightsabers and you've got working sounds.

yo sumo. using pvc piping and plastic sheet can be used to make custom shell mods. look up nerf intgration
Sumo The BuzzBee Predator rifle looks a lot like Sniper's rifle shape-wise, so if you give that gun this treatment, you'll have Sniper's rifle in Nerf form.

Maverick is way better. Its an older but way better model of the strongarm.
I have used squadron putty on the nerf guns I have done. It's great for hiding seam lines and filling screw holes. When smoothing it, nail polish remover on a q-tip works great.

If your planning on giving this to your kids so they can play outside, DONT.the blaster does not have a orange tip and can be mistaken for a firearm by law enforcement so I recommend changing the color back to orange

1. It wouldn't work well because paint doesn't stick well to foam,
2. Toy firearms legally require an orange tip so stupid people know that it's a toy, you say people aren't stupid but regardless of that people are nervous freaks about guns and freak out if they think someone has a real firearm
3. Golden Nerf darts look more like , so if you have a grey Nerf Blaster and golden darts in it people will think it's a gun with bullets in it.
4. The noise a Nerf gun makes does not matter to people who aren't involved in a Nerf battle and can't hear the Nerf blaster noises.

Plumbers putty is basically the same as the Apoxie sculpt and it comes in a tube that’s already measured out so you just cut off a piece and mix it
I liked the Nerd blaster after you customized it. It looks a lot cooler than the original product.
Use JB Weld to merge parts together. If you are going to paint exterior parts that move, grease them with silicone grease and clearcoat everything.

Perfect for what I'm about to do. Friend of mine gave me a bob gun for Christmas and it looks like an assault rifle, so I'm going to paint it to give it a more scifi look. I'm also thinking about adding some leather straps for a space cowboy feel.

Pretty cool! The only thing I'd make different would be using the clay only as a mold, so it could get covered in something that could look a little bit better, I'm still trying to figure out what, but I do have a problem with the clay getting covered only with paint. Anyway, it's still really cool, congrats man, you're living the fabricator's dream.
