The past ten years, I’ve been working as a freelance filmmaker. And what I’ve seen is that more an more clients ask me to document events. Events where I don’t have much time to rig, where I don’t have time to direct people and stage scenes. It’s all about scanning the location with your eyes and finding the moments you want for the video. Even though I bring my steadycam and shoulder rig, I often end up using just my hands. Why is this? Because when you see an action you want to capture, you may only have seconds to shoot it. You have to be able to get the camera in the right position, drag focus and adjust exposure before the moment is gone, forever. Place your focus on what is happening in front of the camera, and not the camera itself.
So why not shoot just handheld? Well, there is a reason why we have tripods and steadycams. They can do things that is almost impossible when shooting handheld, and they can tell your story in different ways. My point is: shooting handheld gives you the ability to shoot fast, in an easy, affordable and very flexible way. You will be able to shoot more, have time to experiment and move quickly around. And that may again be crucial to capture the right moments. The only downside is that the shots can get shaky, but this can be solved with techniques and stabilization (warp stabilizer) in post.
If you want to be the king of handheld shooting, get yourself an easy rig. I recommend the Easyrig Minimax which can handle rigs up to 7kgs. It distributes all the weight to your entire body so you can shoot an entire day without getting tired. It keeps the camera stable in the position you want, and if you need two hands, you can just let go of your camera. The Easyrig will hold it for you! You can buy the Easyrig minimax here (affiliation link): www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...

That scene of the man's glasses got blurred by the steam was super adorable...And as a near-sighted person, I totally got it. 😋
Was waiting on the next upload, fantastic as always Anders 👍
i'm glad to see you happy and happy that you are back. i hope you had and have a wonderful christmas and a happy new year! :)
Good to see you back, Andyax.
Worthwhile video, well done. Your enthusiasm is king. Merry Christmas.

Anders, your videos are always so impressive, and in such high quality! You are so friendly in them and the music accompanied with the visuals always makes them feel like a dream. I have also learned more from you as a filmmaker than anyone else on CZcams. So, thank you.
Thank you :) I really appreciate your comment. I think it's important that we don't rush in life, but look at the details. Appreciate the time we have and be ourselves. Then we can dream away ☺️
Love your tutorials! Happy to see you back on CZcams.
Have been following for a long time and don't disappoint...great work
Great techniques here! Thank you as always. Your style and creative mind is like no others. I really enjoy the way you explain and teach. Thank you Anders!
Amazing video thank you so much. Your drive and energy despite such a tragic loss still amazes me.
Thank you. His family, friends and even fans are just awesome. You have all helped a lot ❤
Coincidentally, the commercial that ran here before your video featured Ron Howard ("Grand Theft Auto," "Apolo 13," "A Beautiful Mind") promoting his series of master classes in film direction. Howard is surely a maven, but your "Handheld Filming" is a master class . Wonderful.
I love your videos! This is so useful! I’ve been shooting handheld for a few years now and understood a lot of what you say in this video and most importantly I learned so many more useful tips to make my handheld footage better!! Thanks so much for all the shared knowledge! 🙏🏼
Really happy that you’re back!!
You're great Andy..!!! I love your videos and channel !!! Please, never stop !

Mostly happy to see a new video from you, mate! Happy Hollidays for you and your family! =)
how did I just find this? I've been also doing events using handheld and I love this video, it's so calm and idk but your humor made me smile :)
Yet another outstanding video. Thank you Andy!
whenever i see sony a7s i remember eskild i miss him this chrismas....love ya andy
5:36 made me cry
he was such an amazing cant forget him
Dude you have an inbuilt stabiliser in your hands..
I think he does! Half the shots look like what comes off my steadicam! Amazing work Anders!
Yup, amazing ibis and if you try the same on a camera that doesn't have it you can't reach the same smoothness
Hehe, thanks ^^ The lack of sun in Norway forces us to drink fish oil as substitute (Vitamin D). Maybe that softens the joints? hehe.
CrexTV he's shooting a Canon, so no ibis. He is the ibis haha
Look at is as Yoga, you are in flow with the camera, it is in contact with your inner motions - Andyax
Lovely shots! Great video, it was so beautiful! Really want to compliment the music, it's subtle but makes the video just so much better!

Wow bro. I love it. All your videos are awesome but i like this one so much because I'm always on the road without any kind of stabilization. Keep it up!! And Merry Christmas :D the video is one year old but it's been suggested to me today
You went from “incognito handheld mode” to “Prepare for Mars Landing” when you put on that EZ Rig. Lol.
This was fantasticly helpful. Nice and indepth. Thank you!
Your videos are always amazing!

Now I have a Christmas feeling ) thank you, Andy!
Aww, that edit at the end was so cute. It was cool to see how the shots were made. Anyhow, great video.
I am every single time so impressed by your videos! really really love them!
AWESOME WORK! Greetings from Germany.
We appreciate your comment :)
Excellent video this was very helpful. I haven't seen anyone creating videos that show how the shots are made. For me I struggle with what shots I need/want to take and how to achieve them. This was helpful in many ways to see the behind the scenes. I'd love to see more of this style of video please it was great. Also I noticed you using manual focus you should upload some helpful hints and tips on getting proper focus for video manually. Great work keep it up.
Thanks for honoring us with your great videos :D
This will help me improve all my videos!! Thank you!!
I'm glad to see you, great director
really great idea and tipis. i totaly agree with you while i have tripod and stedy came sometime i end up with handheld. true said. thanks keep inspire us mr Andyax
Nice steady hands. nice to see you promoting hand techniques instead of expensive sliders and jibs.
Wow the quality is amazing. Great video.
Great Job Andy!
There are now many, many people who are trying tutorials and 'Vlogs' online......
But I can say that 'NOBODY does it better' - Well done the team!
Good to see you! I was smiling till the end of this video.
:) ❤
Great content as always! Awesome music scoring!
Great tips , Oslo is amazing place at Christmas time , thank you keep them coming
Great video, some really great shots! I did alot of handheld shooting while traveling with a Nikon D750 and Sigma Art lenses, no IS for anything. I did these techniques alot and agree 100% that you can get great steady footage with more gear, look forward in your next video!
Really nice video ! amazing atmosphere and emotion. very useful techniques.
I did with stripe and yes it does help. Cons with stabiliser is that is heavy and you get tired quicker than with handheld camera. Haha I did similar for my project with holding breath as well, and I got compliment from my tutor that my shots were stable, all were done with handheld, not even once tripod.
Long time no see! Happy holidays!
after long time ,,,i was waiting for your videos

your channel is one of the best channels i've ever subscribed to! :D I hope you get more subscribers (even tho it's really not your goal)
This was a great tutorial and great fun to watch it as well. You guys are amazing. Thank you for this and I wish you a very merry Xmas and the best gor the new year 2018.
The tip about getting something to save your back and shoulders while filming is a good one.. I pushed it way too far before I got myself one of the backpack camera rigs.. Its a entire different ballgame.
Awesome vídeo! Greetings from Brazil!
Your teaching is so sweet
Love your videos, i've always loved filmmaking but was never really serious about it. This year i thought i'd actually see if i could do something semi professional. Just ordered a GH4 with some equipment ( luckely i already have a røde mic pro ). Your videos are helping alot, not only in learning but very inspiring! Keep it up^^ Vennlig hilsen fra Skien, Telemark.
