    The battery can come off on its own. There's no need to disconnect all the things shown in this video. Once you have disconnected the battery and removed the two screws holding it down, just use a non-metallic string to 'saw' the adhesive under the battery and lift it up. It's that simple.

      @@ocaminhodefatima991 No. This is an overly complex way of removing the battery.

    • @neoterra7072
      @neoterra7072 Před rokem +1

      @@aka_rook I think there's always pros and cons. The pro for using the string method is that it makes the removal process pretty fast; minutes instead of hours. The cons for the disassembly method is the time necessary to do the job and that if one is not mindful, it's easy to damage components, ribbons, wires, connectors and snaps. In addition, the tiny screws can be easy to loose and confuse. All that said I'm sure NewerTech who's been around almost as long as Apple Computer itself, is simply following Apple's official repair guidelines for the battery replacement. The idea of coarse is safety first and to give as much clearance around the battery as possible in order to prevent damaging it, or other components and ribbons during removal and creating a dangerous and toxic fire situation which can also destroy a laptop. In addition, carefully disassembling the computer can also help to help keep critical components from getting damaged as part of the battery removal process. On the flip side however, improper or careless disassembly and reassembly can damage those same ribbons, wires, connectors and snaps. The button snaps for the antenna wires that connect to the wireless card are extremely delicate. Pushing down with uneven pressure can permanently damage both the male and female halves of the snap, rendering antenna wires and wireless card permanently damaged.
      After disassembling my laptop twice, because the first time I missed clearing two ribbons from underneath the logic board, and because now I have a greater understanding of how the computer is assembled, I would use the string method. The two center battery cells are glued to a very thin aluminum shroud that protects the underside of the track pad. Pull too hard on the battery and one can pull that metal shroud right off of the bottom of the track pad. The delicate aluminum shroud is simply glued in place with contact cement. It and the the small ribbon that connects the track pad to the logic board can easily get damaged. Also if any of the ribbon cables tear, you may as well throw your computer away.
      So my word of advice for any of the two methods is, work slowly and be ultra mindful of critical components. When reinstalling the battery, be sure to line up the two screw holes prior to pressing the battery to the case. If the battery has been glued to the case and the the two screw holes are not lined up, chances are one won't be able to reposition the battery afterwards in order to thread those last two screws. This little tip was not mentioned in the video.

    95% of the work in the video is unnecessary!!! It's as if show you how to remove the cup holder while you simply need to replace your car's battery!
    All you need to do are:
    1. open the back
    2. disconnect the battery from the motherboard
    3. unscrew the two screws underneath the warning sticker
    4. remove the batteries using dental floss wire (or similar ways)
    5. replace the batteries
    6. put on the screws
    7. connect the power cable to the motherboard
    8. cover the back and put all screws back
    9. done.

      Yup, he is right. I found that 25 pound fishing line looped and worked under the batteries with a sawing motion released the adhesive from the old batteries. Thank god I read the comments. Taking apart all this stuff would be risky(and insane) as the connectors are tiny and fragile. This is totally doable.

  • @DavidFletcher566
    @DavidFletcher566 Před 3 lety +18

    Nicely produced video, and I used the instructions for how to do the initial battery charging, but you can simply remove the old battery with the string method (I used six strands of dental floss and the two little screwdrivers from the battery kit as handles). Cut the adhesive easily, with no chemicals required. Removing the guts of the laptop just to change the battery is crazy and unnecessary.

    Thanks MacSales - I watched your video first, then ordered the battery. I found the video very detailed with precise instructions that were nicely narrated. Everything works EXACTLY as shown in the tutorial. One caution though, as mentioned in the video, be VERY sure you've moved every connector out of the way before replacing the motherboard. It got me when reconnecting the keyboard backlight (and a couple others). I recommend setting up a space to lay out all the parts and torx screws in the pattern they were removed, it helps keep everything organized when putting it all back together. Great video tutorial - I wish all were as good as this one.

  • @jazar02
    @jazar02 Před 4 lety +16

    I watched the first half of this video, which covered disassembling the MBP. At some point I realized that most of this disassembly is so you can remove the speakers to avoid having the solvent damage them. Removing the back cover is easy. Then there are only 2 screws under the warning sticker at the top of the battery that must be removed. I was able to remove the battery using some plastic hotel room keys. It took a little effort and working to push them under the battery to separate from the case, but in my opinion this was way easier than taking the entire system apart. It may be less risky too, as I always fear screwing up one of those flimsy ribbon connector things. Note, I did not use any solvent, so there was no risk to the speakers or the display.
    The entire process took me about 30 minutes and my MBP is working great.

    This was a great and thorough tutorial. Although some people may prefer the quick way of just removing the battery, while potentially risking all the other components that make up the computer (logic board, SSD card, etc.), this way is how a professional repair shop would do it. The part that took the longest for me was removing the leftover adhesive from the laptop housing-everything else was pretty straightforward.
    I appreciate the level of detail included in the narration portion of this video where details were shared regarding the size and position of screws which made putting things back together so much easier.
    My laptop is up and running perfectly. Remember to calibrate the battery before returning to normal usage conditions. Thanks for the assist on this one!

    I agree with Mr. Chen. After following a few instructions that could easily break something -such as a delicate zif connector that should be never be touched (or used anymore, note to Apple), I realized that you just have to get under the battery. I freed it in less than 10 minutes using a MATCO 2141-7 nylon pry tool pointy end to lift the edge and round end to slice through the adhesive. This automotive tool is extremely strong and about 8" long. Once the battery was out the glue scraped off with a shop knife.

    If you actually want to remove the battery yourself there's a much easier way if you go back to your search. The method is using string of some sort pushing it around the battery cells, and pulling them out. You don't need to take the whole damn thing apart lmaoo.

    The credit card method works! R&R my mid 2012 battery in under an hour. I used thermal paste on non-adhesive surfaces on bottom of battery and did not remove stickie residue from laptop case. Waiting for battery to drain so can calibrate it. Loved the video BUT there is an easier way. And I'll bet the mac shop uses it too.

    More steps than necessary for just the battery replacement, however, I replaced my speakers as well so was great for me. I wish the when you said to watch the cables when replacing the motherboard point out which ones to watch out for, as there are a few and some are small and easy to miss until you want to plug them in and you have to unscrew some of the motherboard screws to fish them out from underneath. My laptop is busy charging now, so I haven't checked everything is ok, but it went pretty smoothly thanks to the video.
    Anyone doing this and doing the whole dissemble I definitely recommend having a magnetized screwdriver so you have an easier time replacing the tiny screws.

I pressed the battery cable connector in as was shown in the video and then I laid the battery into place. Then when instructed to screw in the two screws for the battery, the holes were out of alignment and I was not able install the screws. UPDATE. After not following these 86 easy steps.. and doing it MY way (logical way). The battery started smoking after I short circuited the damn thing.. starts smoking! Sparks! caught my drapes and wood blinds on fire.. The fire department just left. JUST KIDDING! THE BATTERY has been replaced. Took me about an hour to do. You do however want to very careful not to damage any hardware or connections of course and be very careful when prying over the trackpad area. After the unplug of the battery fro the board and removing the two screws.. I used a 2" new ( inexpensive, plastic with good flex) putty knife. I slowly worked the battery (a slow prying action) and did it very very slow.. From one end of the battery to the other. Since the battery I received had the stickies STUCK TO THE TOP OF THE BATTERY instead of the bottom. So I used two pieces of double sided tape.. just on the two end cells of the battery. Worked just fine. Everything is working fine and there was zero damage. On first battery cycle. No I did not use gloves, adhesive remover, plastic square thingy (which was not included) or landscaping goggles, provided. However, you should? Depends how confident you are in your skills I'm thinking. THIS COMMENT WAS JUST MY EXPERIENCE. I'M NOT SUGGESTING THAT THIS WAS A BETTER WAY OR THE RIGHT WAY. Can OWC explain why I can't just change out the battery? Why would I need to remove everything else in this video? Is there some potential for some sort of damage due to a current spike if I don't? From some capacitor or something? Many other CZcams videos just have the battery alone being unscrewed and changed, not all the other items.

      If you get any of that highly corrosive adhesive remover on any of the logic board, or other critical components, then your computer is toast. That's my guess, anyway. I think it's an entirely protective measure to ensure you don't damage or destroy the logic components. And the new battery does have adhesive. It's double-backed tape that's already applied.

    I really miss my Core 2 Duo MBP, when the battery reached the end of it's life, I could replace it in 5 seconds with 2 small latches. This is unfuckingbelieveable. The battery in my 2013 MBP lasted about 4 years then it was useless. So much for extended life so you don't need to replace it! Apple deliberately makes repairs difficult, if not impossible (often) and deliberately makes parts for their devices not 3rd party manufacturable. It's the 1 and only reason I don't purchase Macs. If I could fix them as easily as any PC could be repaired, I would probably spend the money...but you are correct, when they sell their stuff at already 3X the cost of other products you expect it to be 'better' . And for the most part, they are...but you just can't get around the fact that a battery is just a battery, and they have a lifespan...it's a fact of life. The "pop-out/pop-in batteries of windows laptops are highly preferable to macs. That's point #1. Point #2 is the fact that running a laptop on AC power WITH the batter installed, shortens the lifespan of ANY battery. So, on NON-APPLE products, you are actually able to PULL the battery, and simply run on AC power alone, significantly extending the life of the battery, in most cases past the lifespan of the machine itself. I have a 5 year old laptop myself right now...and the battery has been connected to the laptop only 3-4 times, EVER! You just can't do that on a MacBook. So while people toot the Apple horn...there are many downfalls.

    Like many of you out there, I've replaced several laptop, tablet, and phone batteries for family and friends. This video is a prime example why I avoid buying Apple products. They're so convincing, so arrogant, and so full of exaggeration while they're unveiling their 'smart and new' product designs. It's misleading because later they very often prove to be actually inferior and poorly thought-out designs. This is a ridiculous battery design that ignores serviceability. Any $2+k notebook shouldn't be considered disposable, even if it's several years old.

    I think it's sad how APPLE BATTERIES GO BAD ON EVERY MacBook Pro RETINA I HAVE OWNED. apple puts in their cheap crap but charges and ARM & LED for their junk that is not worth a penny. their SPEAKERS are AWFUL and same on every MacBook Pro retina I have owned my speakers are always busted. even if I don't use them. the batteries are used as recommenced also you need to unplug your MacBook pro's from power source to drain batteries to keep them healthy. but once again apple makes cheap junk inside the computer so you are forced to buy their expensive parts. I am addicted to Mac APPLE OS X . once you go Mac you won't Go back. is my motto but I hate having to spend a ton of money to replace their cheap crap. I usually don't talk bad about APPLE, but when I heard the news of china having their workers jumping out of their dorms to their death committing suicide because of the CHEAP PAY FROM APPLE AND LIVING CONDITIONS IN THE APARTMENTS I WAS LIKE I AM NOT SURE HOW WE AS A HUMAN BEINGS CAN SUPPORT SUCH A SAD COMPANY AS APPLE. apple is trying everything they can to keep the consumer from replacing parts like a battery and memory or SSD DRIVES. I can understand why they want to make more BILLION$ from their customers. it's not enough that they have already milked us on their cheap parts they choose to use. charging the new prices for the M1 computers is insane. $6000 for a 16" MAC BOOK PRO RETINA M1 that's crazy. the iPhone prices are getting stupid. but what can you do ? nothing. either pay or shut up I guess. they know they have you addicted and there is no way a Mac geek will ever touch a pc.
