I just completed this operation for a mid-2014 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro (model A1398). I am not sure what model is used in this video, but it does not match. For example, the trackpad cable is routed through a hole and goes underneath the aluminum plate beneath the two center battery cells (not on top of those batteries as shown starting at the 10 minute mark in this video). I watched this video a number of times to prepare for the repair, and then noticed all the recommendations to use fishing-line to slice out each cell. I eventually decided this was a much better approach. This is not the first Mac laptop I've repaired over the years - I've replaced numerous hard drives, cd/dvd drives, and batteries (but never one glued in place). I know that no matter how careful, the connectors keep getting smaller on newer models and the plastic parts get fragile over time due to heat and age. I just didn't want to risk damaging any connectors during disassembly -- not to mention avoiding ESD damage with all the components taken out. In the end it was clear that complete disassembly represented a far greater risk of damage than slicing the adhesive tape off the batteries. So I bought some 40lb braided test line and made a 6" garrote using two metal keychain rings as handles. It worked great! I skipped dozens of disassembly steps shown in this video, and was able to free each battery cell in just a matter of minutes each (including time to peal up the residual stickers). I did use some acetone on q-tips to spot clean the glue residue left behind. That took longer, and while all the glue residue seems gone (it's no longer sticky) the metal plate that protects the trackpad didn't end up looking as clean as in this video (the acetone seemed to discolor the metal finish, possibly due to higher abrasiveness of using q-tips) but I can't imagine that will ever bother anything. I took my time, taking lots of photos and cleaning all the dust out of the fans (with careful blasts of compressed air) before I closed it all up. The whole repair took two hours. If I had followed these instructions, I'm sure it would have taken at least 6-8 hours. The OWC Newertech replacement battery fits well (even seems to take up a bit less space), and my MacBook Pro power up right away without any problems. Very glad I read all the comments in this video and went for the easier approach!

As identified on a helpful website ( everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook_pro/macbook-pro-retina-display-faq/macbook-pro-retina-display-how-to-replace-battery.html): "All 15-Inch Retina Display MacBook Pro models share a unique external Model Number -- A1398 -- but this single identifier is not sufficient to identify these notebooks for the purpose of replacing the battery. Accordingly, the external EMC Number and Model Identifier in software are better for unique, long-term identification."

    • @MarinaB63
      @MarinaB63 Před 3 lety +10

That's exactly right! Just go straight for the battery, unplug it, pull it out, and change it. That's what I did with my MacBook Pro and it now charges like a dream! Just be careful when pulling it out because, if you puncture or break one of the cells, it can catch fire. Other than that, it's actually quite easy. I actually decided to watch this video after finishing the whole process, just out of curiosity, and I was about to make the same comment that you made. They want you to go to the Apple store and pay an arm and a leg for something that you can do yourself with a $46 battery. And, before changing the battery, the Apple store staff will do everything in their power to convince you to purchase an entirely new laptop.

Thanks for the guide! I finished up and am now typing this with a new, non bulging, battery. A few words to those out there going to try this out.
1- Get some large paper and draw each part and a circle where the screws are then place each screw in the circle. This helps a ton in the putting it back together stage.
2- Get some anti static matting and wrist guard, better safe in this case. Keep your parts on the mat as you work and the screws on the paper.
3- Double check the lines when you put the parts in, got two of them under a board and had to take it out a second time.
4- Some parts and wires might be different in your machine, especially if it has had work done on it before and parts changed out. Be patient and don't worry to much if things are not exactly the same, just make sure it is the right computer for the guide and carry on.
5- Be firm, but DO NOT force anything. If it seems like it is not coming out, take a second look at the screws you removed, make sure there is not an extra one on your machine. Make sure the cable is removed in the way you think it it before pulling or pushing anything with force. Still not coming out? Take a third look.
6- Following the last tip, the parts in my machine were MUCH more stiff and hard to get out than the guide makes it look. Some of them had adhesive where non were expected, some had extra screws, some were just damn stuck in their connection points. Use the point of some plastic to poke and prod, not metal.
7- Take your time, don't get stressed, and stay organized. Best of luck friends!
For everyone wondering if you can get it out without taking everything apart. I expect you could, however, the risk of damaging something while getting that damn glue off of the batteries is huge. The amount of scraping and pulling scared me, and that was with my motherboard out of the machine. If it was in there I would have canceled off the start. The parts are delicate af, don't let an extra hour, or the spookiness of taking it apart, make you take a shortcut here. One false slip and your repair could jump up $800, which could have been saved with an extra hour of careful work.
Huge mahalo to the creator of this guide, it saved me some much needed money, and I am now far more confident in my repair skills. Mahalo nui loa!

Although I was a little annoyed, at the halfway point when I realized that I’d disconnected so many extraneous things, it helped me learned about my MacBook hardware in a way I appreciate. Plus, my battery had swollen up so badly that the bottom popped after two screws were removed so I was also a little grateful because you helped me reduce the risk of damaging sensitive hardware in case of leakage or puncture, during removal. However, if I need to do this, again, I’m probably just disconnecting the track pad, battery, and hitting the adhesive

I skipped removing all the extra components because I was more likely to break a wiring harness or ribbon cable than I was too puncture the battery by removing it with everything in place. Use strong fishing line to work underneath each cell and saw it back and forth gently to break the adhesive pads free. Clean with rubbing alcohol and put the new battery in. When placing the new battering into the case, it helps to make sure the wires just before the connector are bent into the correct position so you don't have trouble getting the connector to seat property in its perch.
If you are reading this in 2021, your machine is old enough to warrant replacing the thermal paste on the CPU (and GPU if it has one) while you are in there.

Gently introducing IPA between the battery segments and prying with a spudger was sufficient.
I wondered why the battery must be glued, so I didn't because I don't carry the MBP around, I just use it in the same location, plugged in usually.
Even without glue, it's a snug fit. So we'll see how it goes.

I put some electrical tape on the top to keep in in place. When I booted up, wifi was working, but if it fails in the future, at least I'll know the root cause.

Batteries, memory and hard drives are the three things in a laptop that will likely need to be replaced or upgraded, why make it so difficult and awkward? Who thought this was a good design?

For the battery replacement Please do not get lured to remove screws and cables other than battery. Re-assembly of fans, etc. will be nearly impossible, plus there is a chance of dusting and bending to the connectors.
    1. Remove connection of the battery.
    2. "Gently" detach battery cells from out side to inside by using knife-like tool.
    3. Do not use adhesive removal liquid. The glued areas are detached easily.
    4. Remove the residues of adhesive remnants. Avoid too much of enthusiasm.
    5. The metal thin film-like central protection that is square can be reattached.
    6. New battery can be attached lightly to align two screw areas.
    7. Press the cells firmly, apply rubber strips on top of each cell.
    8. Cover the base of laptop.
    9. Turn on the laptop.
Just did it for my son's mid 2015 mac book pro, 15 inches retina. Charging fine. Warning sign that was shown for an old battery - disappeared.

You'll need plenty of light and another computer or iPad to watch this video while going step by step. I recommend getting some plastic cups to hold each step's screws in. Also some scratch paper to write down what the screws go to! Lastly when replacing the mother board make sure ALL cables/connectors are out from under it. Some are mighty small and easily overlooked. Good luck!

FYI, I've done this replacement already, I didn't see the need to remove all of these components (which is basically to protect your machine from suffering a power surge however, I did make sure the battery to be replaced was pretty much drained before removal as well as being properly grounded to prevent giving off any static discharges that could actually do damage to your machine. However, if you do not know what you're doing, you should take it to a professional for replacement (not too expensive in most instances and should come with at least a 3 month warranty) especially if you can't afford to completely brick your MacBook Pro, I'm not really married to my machine, since I only use it for real emergencies which is not too often.

I agree with the others who questioned the need to do such an extensive disassembly just to replace the battery.
With the first one of these laptops I followed the instructions, only to damage one of the latches for one of the ZIF sockets. I didn't think to flip it back down and out of the way while I proceeded with the rest of the job. I must have damaged it after moving along with the project.
Now, with my second laptop I decided to not bother with the inane disassembly. I used no adhesive remover - I just used a plastic card - dry - and a metal pica pole to help with breaking the adhesive bond. No problem.
After removing the battery I used the card to scrape most of the remaining adhesive. I then used a small piece of the cloth with some acetone to carefully remove the last bit of adhesive.
    Easy peasy.
I say screw the stupid suggestion of full-on disassembly. Moving forward I'm doing it the smart way - no inane, full-on disassembly.

thank you for this, worked like a charm, yes there is alot of stuff to remove if you want to take all of it out, but it's not too bad, just keep your screws organised. You could probably shorten it with just removing the speakers but one of the screws for the left speaker is under the I/O board on the left. As mentioned below maybe using just isopropanol to try and remove the adhesive would mean that there is less risk to the parts if it spilled than there is using the supplied acteone/isopropanol mix that came with the kit. my replacement battery came with a thick plastic layer covering the adhesive so unfortunately i had to remove it to install the battery or else it would not fit, would have rather just had a paper backing layer and just left that on there so that it would be easier to replace in the future.

Together with the original batteries of Apple, I think the NewerTech batteries belong to the very best.
However, imho this video is not what you should use for replacing the battery. While it is very precise, it also is overly complicated. It advocates removing all parts from your MBP completely before replacing the battery. Which seriously puts you into the danger of damaging something. Some of the connectors you have to unplug an replug are extremely small and/or vulnerable.
I went through this process myself. And, while I succeeded, it took me three hours and a lot of sweat. Only to find out afterwards that the whole process could be simplified a lot. On the positive side: I learned things about the architechture of my MBP and was able to thoroughly clean everything from dust.
So, what should you do? You simply have to unplug the trackpad cable, disconnect the battery (one connector, two screws) and remove the battery by using sturdy dental floss to cut through the adhesive between the battery and your Mac. Start with the outer cells one by one, then cut loose the inner two. After that, remove the remaining adhesive with a few drops of acetone (drugstore). Good luck!

    I’ve done this!
It sucked so hard, you won’t believe it. It took me 5 hours.

The fishing line approach worked for me. Since the reason for removing everything is to protect the components from damage from you and from the acetone I helped to prevent the latter by propping up the back end of the computer so that the acetone would flow toward the front, away from components. This video (czcams.com/video/rfHHIERH2J0/video.html) starting at 5:25 shows what it all looks like. Be sure to do the calibration that the MacSales/NewerTech video describes at the end of it's video. Everything went well--done in about 2 hrs but now with experience and confidence I could probably do it in an hour but
    • don't hurry
    • be careful to not spill or squirt any acetone on the computer components
    • be careful to not pry against any components
    • use the minimum force necessary when unplugging the battery connector and when removing the battery to minimize the chance of damage
