      I cannot drop a link or CZcams will delete the comment as spam (at least it usually does) but look up the slate article about brain maturity from November 2022, it talks about this.
      The og brain maturity study didn't actually prove that brains stop aging at 25, they just didn't have anyone older than 25 in the study. All that proves is that brains keep growing up to 25- it could and likely does keep growing and changing afterwards too. There's also not been many similar studies, which means it's not really good science, although it got very popular and spread around fast in spite of little evidence

    • @armchairecon
      @armchairecon Před 4 měsíci +8

      It’s not pseudoscientific, that is being disingenuous by Alvin but it’s just that there are not clearly defined benchmarks for what constitutes full development, according to current consensus the brain is always changing all the way up to old age. It is always developing, it is us as a species who arbitrarily decide on some number at which people are fully developed neurologically but again that is different for everyone. I still don’t know why Alvin said what he did though, I think he just said that to further his argument.

    • @TheMPExperience
      @TheMPExperience Před 4 měsíci +2

      @@louenatnine51 There is no "Town Center," we are too huge of a country with over 350 million people. A "town center" doesn't exist in a society that large. And on Twitter it is the most famous, and most rich whose messages become viral. That is not a town center, that is capitalism.

    • @louenatnine51
      @louenatnine51 Před 4 měsíci +1

      @@TheMPExperience I didn't think I would have to specify this, but I think one can surmise that the use of "town center" here is a stand in for "place that has dictated larger sociocultural conversations for various subgroups", and not an actual "everyone in the US talks about stuff here". At one point, Twitter could have most certainly been considered to have been that, given that at the time "black Twitter"'s most well-known memes, lingo, and conversations were driven by regular people, rather than talking heads.
      I think you also might agree with that given the original poster mentioned twitter not being the town center for "a while", implying that it was at one point.

    I personally feel like this situation, specifically is only a weird situation because she herself has a child his age, and how the dynamic of that goes with him her and her child that could’ve been his friend, but is now potentially having to see him as a stepfather, but outside of that younger people date older people all the time and most of the time we see the power dynamic of that relationship sway financially in the favor of the person who is older. They normally have more money and have lived more life. In this situation he has power here he is not helpless to manipulation outside of the fact that she could potentially be using him for a check. Like the guest said I do not know their personal relationship and I just hope it’s healthy and they enjoy one another. I myself have been in relationship/dated older men. I enjoy them more cause the conversations tend to be more in depth and thought provoking. I also enjoy the look of an older man so I can empathize with their situation and again just hope it’s mutual and not a cash grab on her part. Another point too if we hope for a honest and positive relationship between them that I was hoping y’all would talk about is the benefits of dating older when you’re young. This person knows some pitfalls in life that they could help u out, specially someone with that much money and exposure. Draya has had a wild past but recently to my knowledge she been a good buisness woman and hasn’t been doing bad herself.

  • @FishareFriendsNotFood972
    @FishareFriendsNotFood972 Před 4 měsíci +13

    Love your podcast guys, you all have such thought provoking takes. I do believe there is such a thing as relative maturity based on experience level, and that affects power dynamics. For instance, I have a friend who didn't start dating at all until their 40s, and how they were acting with their first partner was exactly like a high schooler. I felt that their partner (who was their same age) was taking advantage of their inexperience, and I honestly would have preferred if my friend had dated someone closer in experience level, which would probably mean someone younger. I think the social commentary about age gaps has gotten a bit out of hand lately, age is a factor that deserves mentioning, but it's not the 'end all be all, let's all completely condemn this couple' level of importance it's getting lately.

    Appreciate the points about examining the power dynamic through the lens of parenthood and the implications of what a child can do to someone's life and career. I'm a new dad (2 months in) and it's HARD. It requires a level of selflessness and discipline that many people aren't ready for or just don't want to engage in, especially the AVERAGE 22 year old that has access to damn near unlimited money and resources. A 39 year old with experience in child rearing and parenthood will have a completely different mindset and agenda; hopefully they're on the same page or it's gonna be a rough time for him and that baby.

    I hate to say it: Alvin's energy is ruining the vibe of this show for me. He constantly takes the opportunity to openly attack Eddie and it is awkward because it feels way too aggressive and it derails the original conversation. This red flag discussion is just the latest example. Eddie always starts off his points with non-threatening/gracious language but then has to defend himself because Alvin directly attacks him and never lets up. I use the word attack because his tone is dismissive, he often raises his voice, and sometimes even takes shots at Eddie while he's doing it. Its comes accross like he's sick of hearing Eddie talk and just wants to call him out on every topic. Ive literally heard him say versions of "You say a lot of bull****". You can even see it in the way he agrees with Eddie/gives him compliments. He usually qualifies it with a dig or acts as if he's pleasantly surprised. To be clear, it does not matter what his intentions are. It (and his body language) comes accross as disrespect. Not friends's teasing each other. Actual disrespect. It is cringe for listeners like myself and seems to be awkward at times for Josh and the guests.
    I am a fan of the show and I want them to continue. Alvin, if you do actually read this, this is about how you communicate with your co-hosts. It is not an attack on your intellect or personality. We want you to be yourself and challenge Eddie's point if you disagree but you have to show the audience that you still respect your co-host. Ive heard this from my partner after arguments and its good advice: Be careful and considerate with your language, tone and criticism. This is not first take. We are not here for the theatrics or to listen to you debate the interpretation of different words. We want to hear normal guys discuss complicated gender issues with nuance in a SAFE space (like you guys did in the draya part). Good luck guys

      I think you misunderstand him, he wants the audience to be aware that he is an academic... he isnt trying to belittle anyone. Every podcast is potentially a new audience. Besides i think this episode he finally got to be more relaxed usually it looks like he is multi-tasking or something
      Eddie can come off as "too much" because this has also been acknowledged but he can talk forever and thats neither positive nor negative
      Josh is more reserved and its appreciated because at times he does sound like the older brother to two bickering siblings (Eddie & Alvin)
      Guests are really great usually i like it when its female because it allows for different conversations to reveal themselves

      @@wombat7961 As an academic myself, I think we are very aware that Alvin prides himself on his academic accolades. But it absolutely comes off as belittling and a know it all. Being an academic is not an identity and doesn't make you the arbiter of all truth; there should be more to a person then that. It comes off as pretentious and out of touch with every day people. And ya, most episodes he looks bored and like he thinks he is better then the podcast or has something better to do. I have been watching the show for a couple years now and really enjoy it; just Alvin sometimes takes up too much space.

    Why people keep talking bout this bc There are so many relationships going on in the industry where the women is half the age difference of the man or even younger then that but I guess since we are used to old ass man preying on young women it’s okay it’s overlooked but as soon as it’s the other way around it’s a big issue and everybody and they momma got something to say about it that’s crazy there is a relationship going on right now in Hollywood where an up and coming actress is in her early to mid 20 and the man she is married too is in his late 40s bout to be 50 I think he’s 47 and is a very established actor and everybody is okay with their relationship and gives them praise talks about how cute there relationship is and in all actuality shouldn’t it be more predatory if it’s a man seeing as though there stronger and most of the time holds a distinguished power dynamic over them and the example of the man I’m talking about holds more of a reputation over the younger woman and can hold her career in the palm of his hand so there is a power dynamic to there relationship which I don’t think is in this relationship bc there both are influencers and famous but I’m not saying that both situations are right but people gotta stop picking and choosing what’s right and wrong only when it fits them and there narrative it creates a toxic and sad world

      This is a very complex way of saying “Just let women be predatory man.” Come on out & say what you want to say

      @@PinocchioDread No it’s like you completely missed my point I was tryna to make or I didn’t explain it well enough. I was saying that this happens a lot with men being way older then the woman but since we’re so used to it happening that way, we don’t say much about it or I don’t see much about it and it’s happening a lot thats all, but it’s wrong for either man or woman to be in a relationship with someone half there age it’s disgusting and not fair to the young individual.

    Maybe Draya’s man likes older women? Maybe he has been dreaming about dating her for a long time. He’s 22 he knows he can get women pregnant, he knows what he is doing. Age is just a number, I don’t think Draya is that mature anyway.

    I don't care about this subject because men have been doing the same since forever. I think she a hot mess for this but so are the millions of old men dating young women
    Until we care about both , i don't care about either 😂

      Reactionary detected. I actually think it’s kinda stupid to make this a dichotomous “us vs them” mentality where a man should not be worthy of sympathy on account of his broader group. Not an intelligent take here

    Agree with their assessment on Draya. But yáll really think that age gap is the EXACT same thing genders reversed? In patriarchy?

      Yes. Why should we give different treatment to men & women who might be in positions of power?

      More women do it than you think, they are just not as called out as much as men do. Draya got caught so people are calling it out, but maybe situations like this will bring more light on women being predatory just as men and hopefully they will be held to the same standard as their male counterparts.
