  • After two laps of Aotearoa, we’re back to where it all began - interviewing Adam Sharplin in his backyard to conclude Season 2!
Welcome to Season 2 of Tough Talk, Going Deeper. These conversations are shared with the intention of breaking down the stigma surrounding men’s mental health. Psychologist Sam O'Sullivan discovers solutions by asking men to share their stories.
This time we’re going deeper by investigating the historical roots of Adam’s challenge with addiction as a young man and his journey to break the cycle of inter-generational trauma.
“My uncle said something really profound to me one day. ‘Hanging out with a bunch of dickheads doesn’t make you a cool guy among a bunch of dickheads’”.
    We talk about:
    - How the historical trauma from conflict between Māori and Pākehā over land has been passed on through the generations.
    - Adam reflects on this trauma passing through his grandparents, to his mother and father, through to him.
    - He examines how his trail of destruction (“TOD”) through addiction was a “pain blocker” - reckless use of drugs and alcohol, seeking adrenaline rushes that brought on violent tendencies, and dysfunctional relationships.
    - How becoming aware of the history of his wounds helped him shift problematic cycles of behaviour.
    - How he is breaking the cycle by taking ownership of the problems in his life, rather than pointing the finger.
    - How everything changed when he found meaning as a father and husband.
    - His work with supporting men through building trusting relationships and closing wounds, so it is safe for them to open up.
    - “Check yourself” - he tells us that to support others effectively we need to take a look at our own backyard and role model strength through vulnerability.
It will cost $6,000 to finish Season 2 of Tough Talk by September 25th. We have already made $3,096 of our goal, so we are over halfway there! We have over 2,000 followers of Tough Talk. If even half of our following donated $5, we would have $5,000.

We get it, everyone is asking for money nowadays. So, why is Tough Talk worth donating to?
We aren't a big organisation, and so every dollar that is donated to us, goes straight into effective content and resources free for the community to use. We don't have organisational baggage. We don't have to pay for HR meetings, health and safety, big fancy offices, staff, etc.
Curious about what costs us $6000?
Read at the very bottom for a transparent breakdown of our costs.
