  • On a sunny morning in Browns Bay as the beach fills with people going about their routines, Zac Franich, New Zealand’s own bachelor star and contestant of Dancing with the Stars, sits down to tell Sam his story.
Welcome to Season 2 of Tough Talk, Going Deeper. These conversations are shared with the intention of breaking down the stigma surrounding men’s mental health. Psychologist Sam O'Sullivan discovers solutions by asking men to share their stories.
In 2015, Zac earned an opportunity that he had been working for his entire life: representing the New Zealand sprint rowing team in the World Championship. Unfortunately, his rowing partner didn't think that he had what it took, so they ended up in the high courts. During and after this process, Zac's mental health declined. It was necessary for him to bottle up the emotions to get through, but once it was time to open up he realized just how much there was to unpack. He says it was about 12-15 months of struggle. There were many warning bells and it wasn’t until his friend said - " Zac, I think you're depressed" - that he finally accepted what was happening.
One of our favorite quotes from Zac is: "The biggest realization I had, which led me to move on, was realizing the situation got the better of me and being okay with it."
Zac tells us about the environment of high performance sports - in the competition for “success” there is little energy for empathy. They also go deep into a conversation about masculinity, femininity, and redefining success and desirability.

We get it, everyone is asking for money nowadays. So, why is Tough Talk worth donating to?
We aren't a big organisation so every dollar that is donated to us goes straight into effective content and free resources for the community to use. We don't have organisational baggage. We don't have to pay for HR meetings, health and safety, big fancy offices, staff, etc.
Curious about what costs us $6000?
