  • A weather front suddenly approaches as we sit down at Solscape near Raglan to korero with Tiaki & Harmz about their kaupapa - Poutama Tāne, a rites of passage organisation for boys and men. As our korero gets deeper and a Te Ao Māori lens forms, the rain falling from the sky takes on a new meaning. Time passes by effortlessly as we get absorbed in the telling of ancient stories and absorb the wisdom they offer.
Tiaki explains rites of passage as: "A significant event in a child's life that reinforced the values of the community that they were a part of. It initiates them into a new role within that community, which is a young adult."
Welcome to Season 2 of Tough Talk, Going Deeper. These conversations are shared with the intention of breaking down the stigma surrounding men’s mental health. Psychologist Sam O'Sullivan discovers solutions by asking men to share their stories.
In this episode Tiaki & Harmz tell us about:
    - What their mahi is and why it's important for the next generation of young boys.
    - How they are incorporating Te Ao Māori into their kaupapa. They're rediscovering ancient tikanga - the traditions, rituals, and protocols of their ancestors.
    - They weave ancient korero and creation stories into their retelling of rites of passage experiences with boys and men.
    - They talk about the profound effect that being transparent about sexual health and relationships can have on young men within the context of rites of passage.
    - They discuss working alongside wahine and acknowledge how they are constantly learning from the beautiful work their sisters are doing.

We get it, everyone is asking for money nowadays. So, why is Tough Talk worth donating to?
We aren't a big organisation, and so every dollar that is donated to us, goes straight into effective content and resources free for the community to use. We don't have organisational baggage. We don't have to pay for HR meetings, health and safety, big fancy offices, staff, etc.
Curious about what costs us $6000?
