Often mainstream Muslims will say 'peace be upon him' (PBUH) and other terms (SAW) after the prophet Muhammad's name. Why is this and do we need to say this? This video will take a look at what the Quran says about this topic.

Seek knowledge brother. This "Quran only" narrative is deceitful. The Quran orders muslims to obey the prophet pbuh. So the first muslims who heard the prophet pbuh and obeyed him did most certainly not have a "Quran only" approach. When did muslims need to start this? Where is it said "Quran only and not hadith FROM the Prophet pbuh"?
Why seek knowledge from anyone let alone this random internet guy if you are supposed to use "quran only"...

Invoke Allah’s blessings upon him, and salute him with worthy greetings of peace'.. can you comment on this verse.. I agree all prophets should receive same salutation keeping in mind that the Prophet Muhammad was the final testament so maybe that could be why the emphasis on him is there with the salutations....??

Real translation of that verse : (Q33:56) God and His angels help and support the prophet. O you who believe, you shall help and support him, and regard him as he should be regarded.
*33:56 The word “prophet'' (Nabi) consistently refers to Muhammad only when he was alive. Satan used this verse to entice the Muslims into commemorating Muhammad, constantly, instead of commemorating God as enjoined in Q33:41-42.
[Q33:41-42] O you who believe, you shall remember GOD frequently. You shall glorify Him day and night.
We can only 'help and support' the prophet when he was alive. Prophethood is a duty for Muhammad and other messengers of God whilst they're alive. All prophets of God are dead except AlQur'an which is always alive.

Peace be upon those who follow God's guidance
Has Allah, Subhanahu wa Ta'ala, given such permission to someone who goes to a book other than what the Lord of the worlds has sent regarding religion (Sharia)?
We have a clear statement in the Holy Qur'an that you should not follow what Allah has not revealed:
A book has been revealed, follow your Lord from what has been revealed, and do not follow anything other than that.
Now, despite this strong verse, how do you want to answer on the Day of Resurrection?
Did Bukhari's Sahih or Usul Kafi and others like them be revealed by Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala?
If you say that God sent it down, then I have nothing to do with you.
If you say that Allah did not reveal it, then you have no right to go to them, because Allah, the Exalted and forbade it.
if someone rules with Shia and Sunni hadith books and whatever is other than what Allah has revealed, according to the clear verses of Surah Ma'idah, he is a tyrant, a transgressor, and a disbeliever.
Those who do not judge by what Allah has revealed, those are the disbelievers.
Those who do not judge by what Allah has revealed, those are the wrongdoers.
And let the people of the Bible judge by what God revealed to them, and those who do not judge by what God revealed, those are the transgressors.
Is there any need for the hadith of any prophet?
And how do they come to you for judge while they have the Torah, in which is the judgment of God, and then they turn away after that, and those are not believers ﴿43
And how do they make you a judge when they have the Torah and in the Torah is the ruling of Allah?
its said, why should those who have the Torah come to you?
While they have the Torah and my ruling is in the Torah
That is, there is no need for you at all when there is my book, which contains my command.
This is while Muhammad was alive, Moses was dead, and Jesus was also dead
Now tell me, when there is no need for Muhammad while he was alive, due to the existence of God's book, is Muhammad's hadith necessary after thousands of years of his death?
The hadith of any messenger is neither permitted nor required.
When Muhammad was alive, could he guide anyone? or bring
    good or growth to someone?
    Could he even benefit himself?
If you say yes, then answer the following verses and know that you are in opposition to the verses of Allah
    Verse 21 of Surah Jinn
Say, I am not the owner of any loss or growth for you (21)
    Surah Yunus Ayah 49
Say, ``I do not possess any harm nor benefit for myself except what Allah wills .
You do not guide whom you love, but Allah guides whom He wills, and He knows the guided ones ﴿56﴾
According to these verses, which are the words of God, when Muhammad was alive and lived among the same people around him, he could neither do good nor harm to himself, nor could he cause growth or harm to others. And around 1400 years have been passed since he died.
Not only Muhammad, but even if all the prophets were alive at the same time, they would not be able to do anything for anyone.
everything belongs to Allah and He is the guardian over everything. its said in Surah Al-Imran, all good is in the hands of Allah. Both goodness and all grace are in the hands of Allah, and Allah is the upholder of all things, and Allah is the All-Knower of all things,
The Lord of the World, Allah sent down the Qur'an (تَنْزِيلٌ مِنْ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ) and He is the protector of the Qur'an (إِنَّا نَحْنُ نَزَّلْنَا الذِّكْرَ وَإِنَّا لَهُ لَحَافِظُونَ) and Allah conveys the Qur'an to whomever Allah wills.

      The verse 33:56
"Truly God and His Angels are blessing (yusalloon from صلى) the Prophet. Oh you who have faith, likewise bless (salloo) him and sent him greetings (sallimou from سلم) of immense peace"
      Hence: sallallahu alayhi wasallam
Lit: God صلى upon him and سلم
Usually rendered: Peace and blessings be upon him
      This formula is in fact taken directly from the Qur'an and is a prayer phrased as something which has happened, as information ... because it true. It literally means;
"(may) God blessed him and granted him peace"
I've also put this is a comment on the Quraniyoun subreddit.

Thank you for your input, although you.may find it interesting to read same gerrans take on it. He translates it as referring to letting the prophet know you are entering his house for the sake of modesty. Also, if it was to be a consistent blessing, why did God not say the blessing after Muhammads name in the same surah and when he refers to him throughout the rest of the Quran? I would say based on this and the translation Sam gerrans supplies, it fits in accordance to the Quran saying that Muhammad is no more significant than other prophets of God. All the best

I haven't seen his take on it. Will try to find the time for it. But don't get me wrong, I don't think it's something that we have to constantly do, as in it is a sin to not say it or bless him if he is mentioned. Even in mainstream fiqhi Islam they say that as long as you've done it once in your lifetine then the obligation is lifted.
God continuing to do it doesn't mean He needs to "say it" ... who would He be saying it to? This is something He does, He doesn't need to Himself include it in revelation. And God's words are infinite, not in Arabic and not limited to the Qur'an.
This verse is a mark of distinction. He didn't just say "Oh you who believe do this". He starts by saying 1) He Himself, God Almighty, does it, 2) His Angels do it ... and so now you likewise do the same. It is an order given with a lot of grandeur, linked with Nobel beings in the spiritual world ... I don't see how this can be related to trivial matters of entering the house, modesty, etc, which is already dealt with in another verse. No. It's a mark of honor for him, and God knows him better than us and the corrupted image we have because of Hadiths.
This "no distinction" mantra has become unthinking. God does make distinction, and has informed us of them. God isn't unjustly equitable. He gives according to virtue. The Qur'an is full of references to that, between the believers and between Messengers ... like in the explicit verse "These are the Messengers, We preferred (فضل) some over others. Among whom are those to whom God spoke. And He raised (رفع) some of them in rank/degrees (درجات) ..." 2:253
God Himself treated different Messengers differently ... because they too had free will and strove and worked and some did better than others. Some were more determined, more resourceful, more committed. Yunus literally left his mission in anger. That isn't the same as Noah's determination "And God is a calculator of all things". You think God will treat them the same?
This whole atmosphere/bandwagon of "no distinction between Messengers" isn't born of the Qur'an, it is more "anti-Hadith" ... which is an element with in Qur'an Only Islam which I wonder if it will ever be eliminated. If only it were purely "Qur'an Alone".
The verse used for this is "...we make no distinction between any of His Messenger ..."
1st that's a bad translation if you take the wrong sense. "Separate" would be better than "distinction". The word is فرّق .. which means to separate things into groups or opposing teams, to split things up. A football team is a فريق. All the verse is saying is that we don't pit Messengers of God against each other, we don't place them in different teams working for different ends. We don't say we believe in some and reject others.
It is basically the opposite and fulfilment of what is condemned in another verse which explains what it means to فرّق between the Messengers:
4:150- 151 "Indeed, those who disbelieve in Allah and His messengers and wish to discriminate (فرّقوا) between Allah and His messengers and say, "We believe in some and disbelieve in others," and wish to adopt a way in between -
Those are the disbelievers, truly. And We have prepared for the disbelievers a humiliating punishment."
It's just about people being sly and making excuses, and using Messengers against each other to follow their own course while having/maintain a pretense to faith. Rather these same ones are not just Kafirun but THE Kaafirun in truth.
The same word is used here: فرّق. It is "horizontal distinction" if you will. It has nothing to do with rank or virtue. That is فضل ... Like in the verses:
4:95-6: Not equal are those believers remaining [at home] - other than the disabled - and the mujahideen, [who strive and fight] in the cause of Allah with their wealth and their lives. Allah has preferred the mujahideen through their wealth and their lives over those who remain [behind], by degrees. And to both Allah has promised the best [reward]. But Allah has preferred the mujahideen over those who remain [behind] with a great reward -
Degrees [of high position] from Him and forgiveness and mercy. And Allah is ever Forgiving and Merciful.
Why should Messengers and Prophets not be included? You think they were all exactly the same?
      No.
So messengers have been preferred (فضل) over others. And God says in the Qur'an to Muhammad:
"And God's فضل to you is immense"
      See 4:113
And why exactly? ... It is very simple:
"To all are ranks (درجات) in accordance with what they do. Nor is your Lord unmindful of all that they do" 6:132
      Salaam
