Love growing sprouts! Remember to CHEW your broccoli sprouts: when you chew the broccoli sprouts, you activate the enzyme (myrosinase) that converts a compound (glucoraphanin) in the broccoli sprouts into sulforaphane

Letting them have their own sprouting garden was such an excellent way to get them interested in taking part in what they ate.

I love that 'sprouts' are so popular now- my Welsh granny used to eat them every day on sandwiches. We call it 'watercress' or 'cress' this side of the pond. It costs about 30p at the supermarket 😅. Love that everyone is taking this classic and making it cool again though 😊

What you should also do with your kids. Some Red Cabbage in a Blender then put the purple water in a Pot (or the Toilet) and pee on it. It will change the color and is quite fun with younger kids.
Blue and green means good. If it turns pink/red or stays purple you should ear more Green vegetables. It shows if your pee is acidic ar alkaline and healthy would be alkaline (Blue, Green).
Sorry for the off topic but you mentioned Kids and my Son loves it (but he is only 2 years young).

I have been sprouting and growing microgreens for over 30 years. I love them. While I grow many varieties for health my favorite taste wise is Fenugreek. I prefer my Sunflower seeds as micro greens. They are much easier to grow than many people claim. You do not need grow lights, a sunny window will do. Though you can use soil I prefer to use a soiless matt material made for growing this way. Along with Sunflower greens pea shoots and buckwheat lettuce are easy to grow this way too.

    • @teagoldleaf4137

Sunflower micros are tricky, I've used soil, coco coir and paper towel so far. What type of mat do you use, the hemp ones? I've had the best luck with soil, but do find it messy.

    • @Lorreyla
      @Lorreyla Před 3 měsíci +1

@@mommaz820 You're not kidding they're tricky. I have given up on them many times throughout the years. Best tips I could give is use hemp felt to grow, I buy mine from the Sprout People. For cost effectiveness buy it in larger pieces or a roll, precut pieces are more expensive. I have been buying most of my supplies from them all these years. I slightly underwater so I don't get the rust look. I am a bit manic about picking out the shells as soon as I can without hurting the plant as they are the worst culprit for getting gross. I also under plant keeping the planter sparsely planted so they can breathe. I keep them out of the sun till the very last day.

Another great video. Very informational as usual. Just a note I have been sprouting seeds for a while now. For myself of course but also for my birds. My parakeets and cockatiels absolutely love them. Birds fed strictly on seeds will eventually die from malnutrition because seeds do not contain all the nutrients that they need. So adding these to your greens and to your protein that you give your bird aside from bird seed will help them nutritionally as well as help them live longer.

I like to do a 5 minute pre rinse/quick soak in the jar with water and a splash of hydrogen peroxide (h2o2) to ensure the seeds and jar/lid are nice and sanitized. After the 5 minutes I drain, rinse and refill to do the regular first/initial soak. It is a nice little peace of mind for nervous sprouters and you can use what you already have in the medicine cabinet.

Great video. Thank you for sharing. I have been sprouting for 25+ years. I started out sprouting lentils and peas only using a repurposed sauerkraut jar (wide mouth ) with a piece of nylon window screen and from the hardware store and an elastic band, and then progressed into other seeds. I now use wide mouth mason jars with stainless steel screens and lids. Really easy to clean and sanitize. I also grow micro greens as well. This is a great way to continue gardening year round here in Canada.
I also find mustard a little problematic. If you are looking for something with a little heat , radish seeds sprout really easily. 🌱💚🇨🇦
A great source for seeds in Canada are Mums Sprouts in Parkside Saskatchewan, better price and quality, and free shipping with $40 order in Canada , and $100 in the United States. Happy sprouting everyone. 🌱🌱💪💪

I have a couple "Easy Sprout" sprouters, they're supposed to work better than Mason jars. I have trouble finding ways to eat all the sprouts before they go bad. Great video and sprouts are awesome.

Can't wait to try this out! Used to eat sprouts all the time at home as a kid but kind of forgot about them over the years. Definitely one of my favorites back then!

Hi Derek, Thank you very much. I happen to be growing sprouts this week, but I can't really find an inviting way to eat them, so they're in my fridge. Can you do a video of ways to eat them? Thanks so much!

Can you advise how to store these in the fridge please? Do you cover them, or include a paper towel to keep moisture down, and how long would you keep them?
