I absolutely love that I can get skincare tips from ACTUAL certified dermatologist, I swear I will not be looking at another videos on CZcams besides you guys related to all skin care and hair growth tips . Thank you for starting this channel I’m literally learning so much!!!
dr dray is great too!!
Look up Dr.Alexis Stephens, she’s the truth she’s has amazing advice for women of color 🙌🏾
Dr V \Rattan is another source that specialises in skin of colour. Check her out.
I agree..I only listen to Doctors, never to beauty influencers or skincare lovers.
Hi is hyperpimentation the same as flat moles on dark skin?

It’s like looking up the definition of a word and the definition uses the same word in its own definition 😭💀 like what’s the point
Looking forward to the hyperpigmentation regimine video! With retinoid, aha/bha acids, and hydroquinone routine ♥️
Yeah, that was cute!
😂😂😂😭
I love love love and appreciate that you guys also acknowledge issues for darker skin tones and different skin types ❤️ Thank you
@Doctorly I love the detail in this video and I think you guys presented the information in a manner that was concise and entertaining for the viewers. I do have a question for you two: Is it a good idea to combine the faded tropicals serum and the inkey list tranexamic acid serum/ alpha arbutin in a routine? For instance using one for day time routine and the other for night time routine or would it be too much for the skin and not a good idea to combine in that manner?

Thank you for posting this. I now understand that the goal is not just getting rid of the spots, but maintaining a skincare routine that will reduce the current and prevent new ones. I'll be much gentler with myself from now on and think long term about it. EDIT: Mine got kicked off by a bad allergic reaction in my 20's, and it has been back and forth ever since.

Straight forward information with pubs, brilliant. I no longer have to scroll through websites looking for the info you two give freely. Thank you so much for putting your time and effort into these videos. They certainly have already paid off for me.
You guys are the best! Other dermatologists recommend more expensive products but you provide recommendations based on different price points. Thank you for this amazing video. I have been fighting melasma for over 3 decades now and watching this video has got me worried about the usage of hydroquinone even though I have only used it as recommended by doctors. While your video is very informational, I would love to have some direction of what exactly my daily routine needs to be. Like step by step - do this first, then this, then this sort of a thing. Apologies for being so needy but after more than 3 decades of struggling with this, I am nervous to try things without explicit direction. Thank you so much in advance! Happy new Year!
Please continue this channel forever! Since i discoverd your videos, they have changed my life and my skincare routine for much better. Really appreciated all of your hard work putting these all together. Thank you so much!!!
The most valuable piece of information is the knowledge that “commonsensical” is a real word we can use
I figure that if "nonsensical" is a word, why not "commonsensical" 🙂
Great content! I love the way you formatted the information by step-super helpful. Thanks to your editor for the awesome visuals👏🏻
I love your videos guys! I’m a doctor and I love the explanations behind the products and ingredients and everything. Can you make a video about bumps and darkness underarms?
I stared watching your videos maybe 2-3 weeks ago and finally got out of using Proactiv that I’ve used for the last 15 years. Using your tips I have customized my skin care routine and now my skin looks way better than it ever has in my life
Why wouldn't we listen to these doctors? Look at how perfect their skin look. I think when you're happy with the way your skin looks, you smile a lot! Perfect example: Dr.Maxfield and Dr. Shaw ☺
Can you do a video on eczema and best treatment? Thanks
Yes please do, my skin problem is I have combo skin, mild eczema and hyperpigmentation, I change my skin routine got better, lost most of the old one but new one came, its too weird....
You guys are amazing! Have you got any tips for big spots deep under the skin from previous cystic acne? They’ve been there for years and won’t surface! Thank you ☺️
I hate cystic acne, it hurts because it stay under the skin for ages. I've seen a dermatologist and got rid of mine with an antibiotics, Tetralysal, I think. It worked quite good.
The doctors obviously respect each other and enjoy working together - that contributes to a great friendship as well. We, their fans, benefit greatly!! Thank you both so much!!
I love this entire video completely educational I love that we are now sharing more information for clients or patients (minus all the drugstore reccomendations because they just don’t have enough active ingredients)
Absolutely love them and this could you also actually do a step by step routine for fixing hyperpigmentation like from start to finish night time and day time please so i know exactly what steps to use the products in thanks
Hi Docs... I really appreciate all that you have been doing by placing so much clarity about skincare. I would request you to please make a video on kids/toddlers skincare products. I have battled hardcore with melasma since pregnancy 5 years ago. Been going to a Dermatologist and we did all kinds of chemical peels and hydroquinone and you’re so “spot” on. 😉 Once back in the sun sans sunscreen BOOM 💥 back with a vengeance. The peels actually made it appear worse and it’s so true the only thing that worked was the hydroquinone. I’m so happy you warned about long term risks of that product; I was not educated on that.
Love that you’re giving us affordable skin product options so we can feel somewhat in control again without losing our shirts. 💰
Much love 💕
mine came back even wearing thick sunscreen and reapply 3 times a day even in the house. It got worse after a trip to Las Vegas in the summer. Like you said came back with a vengeance. :-(
Mine seems to get worse in hot humid weather regardless of sun exposure. I think just heat can cause it
@@scentsual7752melasma reacts and gets worsened by heat a LOT, that's why people who suffer from it should avoid saunas, steaming etc
Me encanto el video, hablan claro, que se entiende, un lenguaje simple y sin complicaciones, muy bien explicado y con buen humor. Gracias, un video para que se entienda y para informar
Super stoked that I stumbled upon your youtube channel last year. Thanks for the awesome education on everything dermatology; so informative! I'm wondering the "why" behind tinted sunscreen vs just plain sunscreen? Does only tinted have iron oxides and regular sunblock does not? Thanks guys!
More so than all the tips, I learned commonsensical is a word.
Blessings in all you both do. Much respect.
Thanks so much for the post on hyperpigmentation, I have hyperpigmentation and cystic acne. At 50+ yrs old I use retin-A, Cleocin-T and SPF50 daily. I want to try hydroquinone but will wait until I find a derm doc to do so. Awesome advice guys!

love watching you guys such great content with a little humor “perfect”. Oh and i actually looked up “commonsensical” bc i had to know myself…and it came up in the cambridge dictionary as: “showing common sense (= the basic level of practical knowledge and judgment that we all need to help us live in a reasonable and safe way)” so good job Dr. Maxfield! 👍🏼
You both are the best of best. You educated us sooo much… don’t think anyone else did!!! ❤️
When you put up the list of hydroxy acids, I *really* appreciated seeing the Greek letters 💖
I’d love to know your opinion on the Good Molecules Skin brightening serum, so you think it’s effective for hyperpigmentation?
Would you recommend using the faded serum by tropicals and Dr. Jart + cicapair tiger grass camp drops in the same routine ( different day/week) ? If not, which would you include into your routine ?
New kid on the block here and I am falling asleep every night watching your videos. Good job! This video is one of my favorites because of the common issues associated with pigmented skin.
Question: Sun exposure obviously increases hyperpigementation, but doesn't heat alone aggravate and increase melasma specifically?
It's super frustrating that I can be wearing sunscreen and a sun hat and still have melasma spots darken in less than an hour in the heat.
So true that growing up in a household where we tan quite easily SPF wasn’t a priority. Lots of years running around the pool without SPF & around 35 severe discoloration started to appear. Now at almost 50, after about 8 years of lots of work, patience & lots of SPF I’m at a manageable level. Anyone who asks for what I’ve used. I always advise seeing their Dr. first to identify the cause so the treatment is appropriate for the cause 🙌🏼 Also - I invest in really high quality UPF 50+ hats in addition to SPF 🌟 Thanks for the info about the actually formation of the discoloration 🌟 very informative video 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 I’m excited to pick up & test Faded!
I laugh with my kids now about how my son is dark middle eastern skin tone, I'm Portuguese/Lebanese so I ran beautifully and he takes after me. My daughter on the other hand, has porcelain white skin that burns quick ( takes after her dad) When they were young we lived at the beach... I'd slather my daughter in sunscreen and tell me son " you're allset you don't burn" I cringe when I think back to those days... We live and learn
Excellent video! Please consider a part 2 to include laser procedures and professional peels. Thank you so much for all your hard work and excellent advice.

Love your videos, so informative and helpful. Thank you for making them.
Hyperpigmentation can also be caused by medications and a liver that needs to be cleansed. I used to have horrible hyperpigmentation when I was taking a pain medication for a couple years. When I stopped the meds the worst of the hyperpigmentation faded
😘💕Dr. Maxfield and Dr. Shah are back with a topic, I've waited for. Thank you.💕

If I were to buy all these products would I just layer them on top of each other in any order?
You guys are brilliant and such a dynamic duo. I’m an esthetician student and obsessed w your content! 🙌🏼 .. is there anyway way you could do a video on “medical-grade” skincare. I’m confused if there’s actually a difference in active percentages and/or ingredients allowance IF ANY. Not medical grade as in prescription drugs but skincare marketed that way that you can only get as an esthetician or from an esthetician or that are incredibly expensive usually, cosmeceuticals, etc. hopefully that makes sense. Are these skincare brands any better active-wise/formulation/research in anyway and if so how. Thanks you I’m a faithful follower!! Also, I’m getting mixed answers about if esthetician’s are actually allowed to use higher percentage actives than over the counter concentrations in a non-medical setting.
The Budget Dermatologist (and some others) have videos that might help, medical-grade vs. drugstore skincare: myths and more!
I have heard people say there’s no difference between the two. Do you think there is, as an esthetician student? I kind of feel there is a difference but I don’t know.
Great information. Thank you very much for the link to the publication.
Wow! So comprehensive. Thank you 🙏 beautiful smiles.

Hi! I have a question. I know this video is for hyperpigmentation and melasma but could these tips also be used for overall brightening of your face? Thanks so much💖
You guys lookin fresh as always, I love it
I have gotten so many more spots on my arms this past year - I’m a big sunscreen user, so this has been so frustrating for me. The dermatologist I went to for my yearly skin check only addressed the spots stating they weren’t cancerous. Great, but I am wanting to have my arms cosmetically look better too. I feel like it ages me. Thank you for addressing this.
I have the same. They really started coming out at 43. I'm 45 now. It's so annoying
Another terrific video.
I’ve been aggravated by dark spots (sun damage) and always on the hunt! I saw a report that dark spots make you look older than wrinkles and I have to agree. Hoping someone can make something that works and not as finicky as hydroquinone.
Thanks so much!
Hola! Thank you for the video! A request for part 2/question: I understand we can’t control hyperpigmentation caused by hormones during pregnancy or fertile treatments, but could you say a bit more on how to treat it afterwards? I have the Impresion that most of the focus is on acne scars / inflammatory reasons, but not sure if those treatments are adequate for dark spots after a pregnancy. Gracias!!!

In darker skin tones be careful with hydroquinone which can cause rebound hyperpigmentation and glycolic acid which can cause burns at higher percentages
Yes, skin of color shouldn't be using hydroquinone at all. It's irritating and can lead to worse hyperpigmentation after a few months, and this can happen to caucasian skin as well. There are also studies that show toxicity. There are many great alternatives to hydroquinone (and which you can use indefinitely, unlike hydroquinone), including the tyrosinase inhibitors alpha arbutin, azelaic acid, tranexamic acid, dioic acid, kojic acid dipalmitate, licorice root, octadecanoic acid, even vitamin C and green tea extract. Niacinamide is a good supportive ingredient. And the most effective and quickest treatment for hyperpigmentation is one that uses multiple tyrosinase inhibitors at the same time.
Glycolic acid is a risk for skin of color because it's a tiny molecule that when penetrating the skin can lead to burns and inflammation, which can lead to hyperpigmentation. There are also may alternative exfoliators to glycolic acid - in the AHA group, mandelic acid and lactic acid are safe and effective alternatives; the BHA salicylic acid is great; and PHAs gluconolactone and lactobionic acid are also effective, safe alternatives. Glycolic acid is not necessary to use. If you want to use it, or a product you love has it, then use a maximum 5% of glycolic acid.
And kidney damage
@@carpediemearth is kojic acid really safe for skin of color? i bought it but im so scared
@@carpediemearth alpha Arbutin is just another form of hydroquinone, you know that right?
@@jaylove1931 Alpha arbutin is not hydroquinone. Alpha arbutin doesn’t kill the cells that produce pigmentation, it inhibits tyrosinane (enzyme) which stimulates the pigment-producing cells, therefore preventing hyperpigmentation. The effect in the skin is similar, but alpha arbutin is a safe, non-irritating ingredient, unlike hydroquinone. It does work at a slower pace, however. Like I said above, using a product with multiple tyrosinase inhibitors is a more effective and efficient way to clear and prevent hyperpigmentation than just using one.
Please do one for lip care. Like dark lips or pigmentation. Really like your videos and insights. Thanks!
I have melasma on my forearms and a little over deltoid.I apply sunblock several times a day. Still gets darker in summer. I think protective UPF clothing has helped. Also, Dr. V talked about heat making it worse.

You guys are the best. Thank you so much for these videos. My husband and I have been using Ambi's fade cream for my malesma and his sun induced hyperpigmentation. We are almost done using it for 3 months with retinol and nicenamide and spf50 of course. We will now move over to different serums with alpha arbutin, tranexamic acid, kojic acid, niacinamide and retinoids and tinted spf50 of course. Thank you for the detailed advise and ingredient list. We don't have all the suggested products here in South Africa but there are good alternatives like Skin Functional, a South African brand. Again, your videos are informative, intentional and ingredient based and for that we are thankful. 🙏🇿🇦❤️
did ambi's fade cream work?
@@rcaderful I didn't see any difference. I’ve been suffering with dark spots since my skin went crazy in my 20’s. I tried everything and one thing I did try was Hydroquinone . Back in the day I wasn’t educated that well in skincare but hydroquinone I found out wasn’t the best for people of color. I remember when I used it I found it actually made my skin darker but it should be noted that I bought this at a Sephora and as a person who worked for Sephora we were not educated well enough about this product. I’m still on my journey but I’ve been using the FADED serum and it’s actually pretty great. Patience, consistency and sunscreen 👏🏽 that’s the key
question; with faded, did you find that the area got darker before it got lighter? this is an issue I’m having
Where do you buy it from please? I am a person of colour and stopped using anything hydroquonen
You are correct hydroquinone not good for people of colour can end up with rebound hyperpigmentation which means more problems.I use the ordinary products and recently purchased paulas choice 0.3% retinol which is good for people of colour.🙂
Man, Tri-Luma was my savior back in the day! Anytime I got a pimple, it would leave a dark mark even if I didn’t pop it!
Can I buy faded at Sephora?

You talked about sunscreen, but I would love to hear about what the effectiveness of things like clothing with SPF versus regular clothing is. Also, I have made it a point to wear wide-brimmed hats when I know I will be outside for long periods, and don’t know how effective it is. I have very fair skin, and the sun damage from my youth really shows.
