U-N-I-T-Y (love a Black woman from infinity to infinity) 🖤🖤.
Easily one of the best hip hop songs ever created. Thank you for giving Queen her flowers 💐.
If "T.R.O.Y." is the gold medalist of saxophone-based Hip-Hop beats, then "U.N.I.T.Y." is surely the silver medalist.
P.S., Ed O.G.'s "Be a Father to Your Child" is the bronze medalist.
Plus BAFTYC sounds nothing like an acronym for a word
2 pac changes gotta be in the silver, bronze or gold realm as well now
@@peace_of_mind_00 "Changes" is largely piano-based. I wouldn't qualify it in this case.
Bro the mashup at the end is so well done
🙏
RESPECT is one of those songs that I just love playing bass on live. It was usually the 1st song in our set and would cause people to immediately swarm the dance floor. So much fun.
Yes, SO fun to play!
Also, just an interesting side note…the bass part to the song was actually taught to me by Otis’s son, Otis III when I was his neighbor back in the early 2000’s. He passed away unexpectedly not too long ago and is greatly missed by this community.
Definitely! Respect and barbarism begins at home are probably some of the most fun baselines you can learn
Native Tongues era will always be my favorite music. It never stops being good. ☮️✌️🎶
I played this for my 14 year old daughter and she instantly loved it. A certified classic!
This song will always be special to me because the day Queen Latifah shot the music video in Newark, I lived nearby. A group of cyclists came through my block, doing tricks on their cycles until one stopped, slowly rolled, removed their helmet, revealing herself as the Queen. If you pause the video at 2:51, my grandmother (striped shirt/R.I.P) and mother (white headband) are in the shot.
If I wasn't for Latifah we would have no Naughty by Nature. She helped put together and helped produce a ton of Jersey groups.
Flava Unit an under appreciated collective for sure!
And since Her spotlight was IN Jersey the Industry picked up The Fugees as well.
The choice of songs you cover is like reliving my childhood. Thank you for this great dive on one of the greatest rappers of our time.
I just want to say that the amount of effort and love you put into these videos IS SEEN. Thank you!
common digging the greats w
love the consistency of your comments 😂
@@diggingthegreats its what i do🖖
Black Reign was one of my favs back in the day. U.N.I.T.Y. was the main dish, but there are several amazing tracks like Black Hand Side, Rough, Superstar, No Work...
every video since day one is fucking gold! excuse my language, but we needed this! thank you for all of your content. your not only hip hop, but music 100%. Any music documentary's from here on out should have to be approved by you lol
Another great vid. I love how Latifah flipped her first verse in the criminally underrated Brandy - I wanna be down remix
This video is 🔥🔥🔥. Your musicality is off the charts. I really appreciate the in depth knowledge, insight, and passion with which you share in your content.
Native Tongue Tribe is what made me fall in love with hip-hop
As always. Great video. I appreciate you keeping music appreciation so authentic and at the same time so well presented
🙏🙏
Hi, I only recently discovered your channel and am still digging my way through your back catalogue, but this is an instant favourite!! I'm loving your hard work, branding & aesthetic, and your welcoming approach to presentation. The one thing that I felt lacking was the number of ladies represented. This has a hearty helping of two wonder women!! Having grown up with Salt n Pepa, I appear to have missed some pivotal Latifa action in my life, so (with large thanks to you) I'm gonna buy Black Reign! Thank you for this fantastic video, and all your hard work!!
I’ve made sure my 8 year old daughter knows and loves this song. Thank you Queen L.
Think when it comes to 90s hip hop, and massive generalisation alert here, the Native Tongue were better musicians. But you can't deny the power and excitement of gangster rap.
And love this song. Always nice to have a bit of Monie Love too
It's almost they they are Two different genres, it's hard to compare gangster rap with the afrocentric smart music that hip hop was making including the natives. Sometimes you want those hard beats and heavy lyrics from ice cube, and sometimes you want to drive or chill to some hiphop like tribe or common sense.
It's Wilton Felder's birthday today!! (September 1st)
the squiggle slipmat and stickers came in and i’m LOVING them 🙌🏽 thank you!❤️🔥
Yes! Glad you like em 🔥
Thank you for shining light on this classic!
Do you plan on doing a video on Outkast? The album Aquemini is one of my favorite hip hop records, the songs Slump, West Savanah, Da Art of Storytelling pt 1, Synthesizer and SpottieOttieDopaliscious are all top tier jams
Absolutely on the list 🔥
@@diggingthegreats hell yeah I'm looking forward to it
Bro is always on point with these kinds of topics!
On Love ❤️
🙏🙏🙏
FACTS!
Dude, I have grown SO much since I found you last year in watching your videos and love for music & hip hop in particular. Thank you for sharing your passion.
Please keep on making videos, btw us nerds love the music theory insights. & sheesh can you funk up a bass or what.. 👏🏻
The mashup was crazy. Love the video. I purchased the slip mat. I’m waiting on it all the way in Canada.
Amazing video as always; I learn a lot every time I watch the channel! Is there any chance we might see a Beatminerz/Boot Camp Clik or a Dr. Octagon video in the future?
Love love love this song. Great to see Naughty by Nature supporting Latifah on this.
KayGee is kind of underappreciated in my opinion. Love what he did with the Donald Byrd - French Spice sample on "It's On". The musicians that played on the sampled track are mind-bogglingly accomplished with the likes of Billy Higgins, Donald Byrd, Wayne Shorter, and THE Herbie Hancock.
This song is a vibe🤌 love the beat and the saxophone
Have to say, half the reason I enjoy your content so much is the jam session you have at the end, always blows my tiny mind ❤
You never seem to disappoint.
I always gotta go back and listen to the original parts and songs individually with a new, though older ear.
Great Breakdown My Man.
Love you for this! I remember buying the cassette single after seeing the video and I wore that mug out!😂😂
you keep knocking 'em out a tha park ... great deconstruction... appropriate homage... obvious love of music... do ya thang, my brotha! 💯🔥😍🤩🥰
🙏🙏🙏
No D-I-S-R-E-S-P-E-C-T to your craft, the bass playing is absolutely great. But the filtering of bass (with the subtones from other instruments filtering through) is one of the most beautiful sounds in hip hop. Its ubiquitous. That technique is one of the reasons samples cant be truly recreated by conventional instruments.
You killed that bass
I wish I was friends with Latifah, because I'd put this video in front of her. So awesome.
I need to hurry up and get my stuff together so I can get on your schedule. I need to learn from you. You are awesome. Thank you for filling this space with your knowledge.
I watch the ads in full for you dawg
😂🙏🙏
Super dope!! Loved the mash up at the end!
Thank you 🙏 the songs did the work for me - as I mentioned, C major and A minor work together perfectly, so it's just switching between the two 🔥
🤌#Perfect

Classic positive joint.
Great song one that i play a lot on my playlist
That mashup was nice as hell man. Love your content
Gosh, I remember seeing that video for the first time.... probably on yo!mtv raps...
Felt like one of my aunties rapping at me...and in my family, you did not mess with the aunties...
This channel is amazing, keep up the good work!
Kaygee is a criminally underrated producer
my fav woman MC to this day. her verses on Mama Gave Birth to the Soul Children is my shit
That blend at the end…….too classic!!!!! Great video
Another great installment! Thanks
I love the switch in mash up! Great channel!!
My favorite Latifa song
That Sax is absolute Killer🔥🔥Timeless classic by Latifah
Finally yes Queen Latifah. ❤❤
Ah, my favorite channel for old heads kills it again!
yo your bass playin at the end, god damn lol amazing
I literally went back to 0:30 several timesssss for that The Office reference! You are so awesome!
Glad somebody caught it 😂
Brilliant 💜
Someone I'd think you would dig is Nujabes. He's sort of the godfather of Lofi Hip-hop along with Dilla, but definitely something to listen to fs.
The mashup gave me goosebumps! So rad.
Love when you lean me something new! 🙏😆
This mashup is awesome. 🔥🔥
10:33 I think this might be the funkiest thing I've ever heard in my life!
Killer! Love the mashup and bass skillz at the end!
That was amazing man, well done and thank you
great writing fam, wow. thank you
Wilton Felder is criminally under-discussed in music
Well done as usual 👏👏👏👏
🙏🙏🙏
SO glad you did this one!! Amazing song!
A classic
@@diggingthegreats I'll be looking out for a deep dive on 'Ladies First' and Miss Melody's underestimated influence over early hip-hop.
Thank you for This great Video. Love the Education behind the deconstructions, the perfect Video editing, mashup & Entertainment at the same Time.
Your Channel will be a Part in music History 💯💯💯
🙏🙏
2:28 that Dre song was a response to Brothers Ain't it from Roxanne
As always, you killing it ♥️🤘
*reads title*
FACTS.
In the discussion of hip hop producers people always seem to forget KayGee! He had that era on lock. He was producing hits and was one of the first producers with a signature style when you can listen and say yo that's a KayGee beat! It's all good, we from Jerz we used to the disrespect. Big up KayGee, big up Flavor Unit, big up Naughty By Nature, Da Youngstas, Zhane, Rotten Rascals and the whole Jersey Massive ✌🏿✌🏿
Just Another Day a good song too on the album
BEST MASH UP EVEEEEER!!!!
And she was an acceptional singer too 🔥
Hey man, you should do a video on Wee! A band sampled by Kanye, Alchemist, Madlib, Logic, Kweli, frank ocean, and the guy who wrote all the music Norman Whiteside was a mega gangster and got tied up in a gang war between Cleveland and his stomping ground Columbus (Cleveland gangs were attempting to overtake the columbus business) and so this guy caught a murder charge and just finished serving 31 years in 2016, coming out to a new generation appreciating his music. it'd make for a great video
really a story waiting to be told, the guy doesn't even have a wikipedia page but you can find local news articles about him. maybe could contact him for a interview as he's a free man now
Queen Latifah is and always will be one of the greatest to ever do it ❤
Dude is an absolute MASTER with these presentations!
🙏🙏
Waiting for that Digging In the Grates mash up mixtape!
I have a UNITY tattoo. Although it's a general love for the idea, and an Operation Ivy nod, I've told dozens of people that it's Queen Latifa inspired. I'm a 40 year old white guy, so it gets laughs. I've also thought heavily about getting "RESPECT" tattooed on myself... Weird.
Love it when you break out the bass 🙌🏼
Im starting to think that as an engineer its definitely important to find a live instrument to maybe understand frequencies from. Your bass work is crazy
I’m more curious on that NAS lanyard hanging in the back. As a die hard Nas fan, I that piece would be framed. #Respect
Nice
Love unity , it slaps
It’s been decades and I still can’t get enough Native Tongues!!!
Yes it is🔥🔥🔥
this song was a diss towards apaches song "gangsta b*tch". rip apache
My boy didn’t linger at the end of the video pointing to the video card… I’m shook
😂😂
Genius mashup
Black Reign is such a great album
I cannot wait for the day when Gen Z discovers Diggin' You Out from DJ Quik. I think the psychologists will do overtime for weeks, despite that you cannot take the song seriously. As for "women's power" it is interesting how previous generations liked to forget that their heroes were not the first. It is like every strong female artist being constantly deleted by the current ones, even if they are only a few years apart. The best example is how Spice Girls are said to have started the "girl power" movement, despite this song came out 3 years prior to their first album, or I'm just a girl from No Doubt came out just one year before Spice.
Also, Latifah had a song about the same topic with Monie Love a few years prior to this.
Good mashup
Why the black tape over “Audio Technica”?
Need this mashup tho!
We gotta give KG his got damn flowers…..he gave nj its own sound. And then went own hold his own in R&B after the grimey beats era
Notice his biggest hits are directly R&B based. Jackson 5 and Isley Brothers played a part in Naughtys biggest songs
Yes
Hey man, I’m going record shopping and don’t know what to buy. Lookin for some samples. You got any ideas what I could buy for drum breaks?
Kay Gee one of the best!
