Car vertical are terrible. It cost twice as much as the rac report I did on the same car and told me less info. The previous damage photos is a scam. Don't use car vertical unless you have money to throw away
Hey, when are you coming to Cairngorms?
OK why don't ya make it 1500 each via both cars are needing sorting so no one gets hurt or DEAD
My opinion should of gone with the 156. Proper Alfa V6 and sounded like a decent bloke too.
Doesn't make for good content if it's actually a good car I guess
they mugged the bloke off too tbh
@@connormatthews522 Definitely a dick move.
yep! The Brera is such a mistake
Yep definitely should have got the 156. Still a shitter that would have been a laugh

I thought the same thing, too. That 156 looked ok. But it's the Unreliable Car Challenge. It has to be a shitbox.😁
And the holden V6 does have its issues...

The "window safety not available" message occurs when you disconnect the battery.
To fix it, just start the car, hold the window switch down until it reaches the bottom and hold for another 10 seconds, then hold the window switch up and hold for another 10 seconds when it reaches the top.
This allows the motors to learn the up and down extremes and clears the error.
Helpful as that may be, somehow I don't think that will be their biggest concern...

Of course the only shit thing would be german
The 3.2 Jts in the Brera is not a Busso Engine. Its a GM V6…
Most unreliable engine on the planet. They did good for the challenge.
Also Busso which is in 156 isn't unreliable. It is one of if not even the best V6 ever. Clarkson said it. Jts which is in Brera is not great
@@DamirStajicyeah the main complaint is usually just how much fuel it guzzles compared to its power output
@@Archman155 I don't understand why anyone would moan about the Busso's fuel consumption (unless they are more attuned to 1.0L economoboxes). I've had 3 Busso 156s - and my current daily driver is a 2002 156 3.2L GTA with 260,000km on it - and I average about 10L/100km, doing 300km a week in peak hour stop start traffic. Worth every cent for the sound and fury... In comparison, my '81 Alfetta GTV 2.0L averages closer to 15L/100km (but it does have twin 45mm Webers...) the car is for sure not worth 1k considering the state of it, as rory said, 400 pounds would have been a fair deal

Somehow, I think the 156 was the better deal - that’s an absolute dog. Also, the 156 is a fine drivers car, and would have been great fun on the twisties - if the suspension bushes weren’t shot (I owned one - and loved it - but I had to replace the suspension bushes and headlamp bulbs every week (or so it seemed)). I’d love another one!
absolutely, the 2.5 might have less power, but keep the belt in good nick and itll run forever, i wouldnt trust a 3.2 JTS to do half the mileage

Awesome video! Can't wait for more on the Brera! LOL
P.S: The 3.2 in the Brera it's the disgraceful and unreliable GM HFV6 from General Motors #NotABusso
An absolute pile.
In North America the HFV6 with premature timing chain wear problems is only the 2008-2009 model years and typically only seen in vehicles with extended oil change intervals. Otherwise a decent engine when maintained. Not sure about this 2006 Australian variant.
@@DruidB19 I own a 2006 Brera of which I had to replace the timing chains plus tensioners (that's where the weak point is) at around 77k miles and the engine is running like a dream to about 125k miles as of today. Reserve some budget for accessories though and regular maintenance, like oil changes as you said.
I absolutely adore my V6 Alfa!
I did not knew that, but I also don`t know much about Alfa`s, thank you for sharing!
It's a 3.2 GM Australia motor. Alpha Romeo did upgrade it with Direct injection, a higher compression ratio and vvti.
Not that bad of an engine to be honest.
I love Rory’s reaction
“I think I just bought a car”
And then didn't.
Based on the podcast he isn't new to that, he's owned about 30 before turning 30
Words actually cannot describe how hyped I am for the eventual video of the actual road trip.
Taylor: Hates Vauxhalls
Also Taylor: Buys an Alfa Romeo with a Vauxhall Vectra engine
edit: I've been informed the 3.2 was actually in the Vauxhall Antara but same difference
Did this go in the Vectra? The 3.2 GSi was way out of production before the Brera was launched. Wikipedia suggests this 3.2 went in the Antara.
@@adammcallister2260You are right, its definitely a related engine though, albeit the 2.8 not the 3.2

I absolutely love Alfas, I had 2.0 Twin Spark 156 and a 3.0 V6 156. They both blew up of course, but they were brilliant while they lasted.
heh same - I went on an enthusiastic drive in my 2.0 TS after an argument with my wife then returned home all sheepish with smoke pouring out of the bonnet and an oil light flickering on - oops.
I had a Brera 3.2 for a couple of years, one of the slowest, thirstiest cars I've ever owned, £500 a year just for the road tax, and an awful GM V6, but what a beautiful looking machine!
Did you do any manteinence?
I’m sad you passed on that Busso 156, for a dead Brera, which can not be done anywhere near that 1k budget, even if you sell the whole interior and wheels. Its not about, spending more money on it, its just about ignoring the rules you made. I would have loved to see that 156
Anyway, still love the channel and all of you, just let out my words. Cheers
We need a full restoration of that Brera. A manual Brera with the sky window and Q4 is very rare
I would take a 1750TBi Brera over the crappy GM 3.2 any day of the week and twice on Sunday. There’s a reason why 3.2 Breras can be found for 5k while the 1750 Breras are 15k and up. A sorted 1750 Brera TI in Europe is over 20k
Sorry but the v6 in the brera is not a busso engine.
Correct, its a GM Engine and therefore not a iconic as the Busso 👍🏻
honestly, the alfa looks amazing. Stunning car if you make it nice. This is one of those cars that if its fixable fix it and make it nice. Doesnt deserve to die
The 6 speed box is from a VXR and they go on the 5th gear... Mine did! Just to be aware if there's a persistent almost hissing noise from the gear level in 5th. Might be the last of your worries! 😂. Can't wait to see the work done on this! The brera and interior is a design classic for me, as was the 159. And jesus, it only needs one person to say it's not a busso!
I loved top gear back in the day, used to look forward to Sunday nights. Now I look forward to your podcasts and videos on CZcams just the same. Alex, Taylor and Rory are brilliant in their own ways. Living the dream, and so it continues.
My wife had a 2.4 JTDM coup. Lovely car to drive, but Alfa features included, an alarm that would go off if it was parked on a slope, a passenger seat electric window that would randomly open when you locked the car, and a leaky boot badge. Good luck and god speed as the weather up here is Scotland is WET and cold! But there are some crackin roads up here you’re gonna love!
Those problems are common with many car brands, not just alfa. I've fixed tons of faulty alarm, window regulators and leaks on many cars over the years. Nothing lasts forever.
Smashing it lads! absolutely loving these videos! 👌
I had a 147 jtd mjet, a great car when it worked. The sat nav used to come out of the dash under hard acceleration. It randomly stayed in 3rd one day (colchester to rotherham) was fine the next day and never did it again. Cam belt went at 25k ( book said 60k for change) and totalled the engine and lastly the windscreen broke on the way to trade it in. I loved it when it worked.
2:30 i love the hitmarker sound 🤣
Alex (Car Verticle Ad): “This car is never going on the road again.”
Mat Armstrong: “Hold my Pyrofuse.”
tbh ive owned a 2008 159 1.9jtdm 16v, and in a bit over 2 years, all the car wanted was the glow plugs and an alternator, so all in it cost me around 120€, appart from regular maintenantce the car was very reliable for an alfa and i kinda miss it but i preffer my renault laguna :) regarding the window safety i had the same on my rear doors, might be either the trap sensor in the window surround or the module under the rear seats
2 years is not enough time span to actually know if a car is reliable or not, 10 yes but 2 for sure it never is

Thank you guys and Alex for this amazing videos 🙌
I have exactly the same Brera (same spec, same color, same wheel) 5 year with it and it's a wonderful car! Like every Italian car, it have its drawback but, globally, it's pretty reliable.
The subframes bushing are know to be fragile and could fail on bad road.. when it happens we ear some strange noise when we turn the steering wheel.
The most common issue is the oil temp sensor that fail pretty quickly and its a expansive parts and very tricky to change (you have to disassemble the whole bottom part of the motor (it's just to indicate the oil temperature so not necessary for you, you could just unplug it)
If the service is not made regularly the chain could make some noice, but it's the same for every GDI engine.
The oil breather is directly connected to the air admission so it happens that some oil get over the airflow sensor so it need to be clean
(And last thing. In order to preserve the coil, put the spark plug gap at 1.1mm not 1.3mm )
Otherwise it's a Very good car! It so pleasant to drive it.
What a good choice 👍
I’m so disappointed they didn’t go for the 156 with the 2.5 it’s such a good engine! Although the Brera is good looking the engine is so wrong it ruins the car 😭😭 love the idea of picking an Alfa just a shame you picked the wrong one 🤣
Err, its not a Busso, sorry. Its the GM Holden V6. Basically the same as you would find in a Saab 9-3 Turbo X, but without the turbo.
Would love to see a project on this Brera to see if you can succeed where so many have failed to make it a dynamic car thats actually pretty good to drive and not just for cruising! Fingers crossed it makes to Scotland and back!🤞🏼
In 2016 I bought a Grande Punto 1.2 2006 and I went to Poland around 4 times and came back with no issues! I had it for over 2 years and never had a problem with it!
Looking forward to seeing what Taylor does with the Brera.(And within budget…Wink wink😉😉)We all know how he can stretch the budget when needed…Such a great looking car in its day.
Now this series is shaping up to be something FXCKING BRILLIANT 👍👍👍
I love these cars, very sad to see one in such a state! I hope Taylor can do something with it
So can't wait to see Alex in a Rx8 again 😂
I had a 147 Diesel multi valve which I bought new. Took it to Halfords for a new headlight bulb and the mechanic said "what a lovely car - but I bet that it is a money pit in repairs". I told him that the headlight bulb was the most major failure in 30,000 miles.
Super fast, super economical, super fun, super pretty (well not as much as a Brera or the convertible), practical and the most RELIABLE, WELL BUILT car I have ever had (except perhaps for an X type which did 193,000 with just a replacement power steering). Unlike the Mercedes, BMW, Saabs etc that I have owned which were designed to fail.
Every time I’m about to get any work done, I refresh my CZcams and there’s a new video for me to watch. The consistency is fantastic
Love these shows and I love Taylor even more for wanting an Alfa 👌🏻
I was howling with laughter at 6:03 😆🤣😂

@@AK.2425 possibly, 3 years between import and crash so very possible if it were a personal import, but unlikely if it were imported to be sold on here. (Unless it was bought back by them, obvs.)
It also has locally issued plate from Reading and the yard is rented out by for car storage by loads of people so it is possible it was imported by them and to someone who uses the yard aswell.
I had a brera V6 and even though the engine went pop and sold it for a grand I'd honestly have another one tomorrow and probably will end up having another at some point.
As long as you don't mind working on it your self they aren't that bad tbh
I ran a 2L 164 from 130->150K miles and then a 3L V6 166 from 80K->110K both auction buys and ran them both for 2 years each and sold them for more than I bought them for. Then only problem I had in 4 years was a spark plug that popped out of the V6. It had been cross threaded by the main dealer (the only people who touched it before me). A simple helicoil solved it, can't blame the Alfas for that. I've had my share of shitboxes over the years (Merc R class, Lancia Betax2, Fiat 128 3P) and the Alfas were fantastic. I'd take any one over a BM or Merc of 2005-2020 vintage.

I feel a bit protective towards Alfas as they're, along with the only BMW I've ever owned, the most interesting cars I've had. Granted, you will quickly become very familiar with the local specialist if you have one though.
Unfortunately, its not a Busso engine (or Ferrari) its a GM derived engine... also the chain is a pain to replace... solid car though... also you sure its 4WD and not AWD?

Good luck Taylor. I have one of these sat in my yard at work which I failed on mot about 2 &1/2 years ago. At that time it only needed a drop link, seatbelt buckle and a prop centre bearing. Link and buckle were easily sorted. Prop is 3k special order from Italy and can't be rebuilt with new bearings 👍
Hard to say but its true, i was a die hard MCM fan but Autoalex is what i look forward too now..

Taylor's jeggings are hilarious.
It makes me soo happy seeing alfas on the channel. There's not a lot of content out there with alfa romeos, especially with the legendary Busso engine. Hope the boys get one of them soon.
10:11 are we just going to ignore the W8 Passat
Brera is not Busso my friends.
The Brera's engine is made by Holden. Block is actually Holden and head is alfa's with twin phaser system...had one TI spec, Q4 CA...sold her with 70000km's on the clock.
Timing chain and some other bits are critical to change on time.. original TC is expensive, but as it was under GM, Chrysler parts fits just fine.
Well, after 6 (7 now) alfas, i can say i rarely had any problems with them.. usualy only regural service and here and there something stupid like, rear window wipers, bushes etc. Overall, good cars
Totally agree. They are not unreliable as people think, and they do drive beautiful. Built quality is not to German or Swedish standard but they are ok. I'm feed up of those idiots talking shit about something they never even seen.
"it says check engine"
"Well, we've done that..."
Almost spit my drink out on the table.
Good luck sorting that suspension for £1! 😂 Someone has cut the drop links as the bolts seize on and it's the only way to get them out. You'll probably have to cut the bolts off what is still attached. The play in the wheel will most likely be the upper control arm and either one or both of the lower ball joints (lower control and/or tie rod end). Could also be some play in the wheel bearing as Taylor suggests. The anti roll bar bushes might also be toast... and that's begore you even start on the engine and exhaust...
Oh dear... 🤣
Could honestly watch you lads talk total codswallop all day, seriously wanna see a 3 day challenge! Buy, Build, Battle.

I know where that yard is located and it is scrap yard but there also other businesses there that park cars including car dealers and private individuals. So possibly not being and is a project. Only imported to the UK in 2018. The Mot expired in June 2021 it’s been crashed before then and would have been scrapped since, if it was not needed. Since it still hasn’t been scrapped hopefully someone is planning to repair it.
Also there’s Japanese importer based in that yard so might have been imported by them since it has local Reading issued plates.
Genuinely brilliant guys, I would wish you luck Taylor but I kinda want to see you break down 🤣 If you get that thing to Scotland without it killing you then I'll be extremely impressed!
I'm looking forward to watching Taylor fall in love with that Alfa, it happened to me, a few years ago I was looking for a Lexus, ended up buying an Alfa GT with crushed sills, slammed to the deck, BBS alloys, and I fell in love with it, it reminded me how enjoyable it can be to be a car owner, best car I've ever owned by far. Unfortunately, due to financial problems and the aforementioned crushed sills, it has now gone to that great scrappy in the sky, but I'd own another in a heartbeat if given the chance!
The sounds Taylor makes when he is excited 😂😂
So glad you guys got a Brera. It's design is a work of art and the car itself is very different and interesting! I hope it makes it all the way through the journey😂
Seeing how taylor was so happy with the car makes me happy
I kind of want to see the full restoration of this car. Right after Alex's fickin' e46 purple touring.

“Let’s go eat a dorito” *wink*
Confirmed, next car is an RX8 😂
Love the silver e30 in the background
This has made me want another Alfa, I don’t know how to explain it but they are the best worst cars to own. The central locking didn’t work with the remote in that when you unlocked the car the alarm started going off, hit a bump and the Bluetooth would disconnect however the sound of the engine the way it drove was just so good
So funny, that car is a death trap!
I think almost all the roadtrips on AutoAlex so far could be badged as unreliable car challenges!
Nooo the Brera didn't have the Busso V6. Also that guy was technically right about the Busso being a Ferrari engine. It was developed by Giuseppe Busso a Ferrari engineer.
Busso???😂
