- THE HISTORY OF GOODISON PARK, THE HOME OF EVERTON FC SINCE 1892
Goodison Park officially opened on 24 August 1892 with an athletics event. The first match, between Everton and Bolton (4-2), was played 9 days later. Everton had previously played at Anfield, but a dispute over the rent drove them out.
Goodison Park initially consisted of one covered seating stand, two uncovered terraces, and a running track. In 1894, it hosted its first FA Cup final. Notts County beat Bolton in front of a 37,000 crowd.
The stadium got quickly developed in the early 20th century, first with the construction of a double-decker stand at the Park End in 1907, and next with the large Goodison Road Stand in 1909. The running track was also removed.
The new double-decker Goodison Road Stand had been designed by renowned architect Archibald Leitch. At that time, Goodison Park was considered the best ground in Britain.
Archibald Leitch also designed the next two new stands of the ground. The first was the new Bullens Road Stand in 1926 and the second the new Gwladys Street End in 1938. All stands were two-tiered.
On the 18th of December 1948, Goodison Park recorded its highest attendance in a match between Everton and Liverpool. A total of 78,299 supporters visited the match.
Goodison Park was one of the playing venues of the 1966 World Cup, during which it hosted three group matches, the quarter-final between Portugal and North Korea (5-3), and the semi-final between Germany and the Soviet Union (2-1).
The stadium remained largely unchanged until in 1971 a new three-tiered main stand was built in place of the Goodison Road Stand. At that time the stadium could hold about 55,000 fans, slightly less than half seated.
In the 1990s, following the Hillsborough disaster and Taylor report, Goodison Park got converted into an all-seater stadium, which reduced capacity significantly. In 1994, the last major development took place when a new stand got built at the Park End.
In the last fifteen years, Everton have been actively pursuing a move to a new stadium, first at King’s Dock and later in the Kirkby area, but both times plans fell through. After a break during which efforts were paused, the club recently picked up their pursuit for a new stadium again, focusing on a site at Liverpool’s waterfront north of the centre and one in the Croxteth suburb in the north-east of the city.

Nothing beats the character, style & feel of these old football stadiums. This ground appears to have a church in the corner! That's gold, u wont get that in the new boring stadiums. & to think they once had 72,000 plus packed in like sardines. o how i wish i could have been there. Simply magical.
A classic old school football ground. I love it and I love The Toffees! I hope the new stadium retains some of the Goodison character. COYB!
Jeff Jacobson I doubt it will, new stadiums are designed by people who don’t care for traditional quirks or atmosphere
Coyb.
@@indiekiddrugpatrol3117 it's older then 20 years old??
Magical views of this great stadium, it will be sad to see the club move to its new home.
I am not an Everton fan, however you can not deny that Goodison Park has been one of the outstanding stadiums up the 1990s ... its still a good old stadium, yet Everton need to move to the Liverpool Docklands.
they'll live to regret it just like Arsenal, Man City and West Ham fans do
@@waz3128 and Sunderland far bigger club then West Ham and same level as city before the pile
My dream i visit everton
It is a great joy, you must do it at least once. It's not the same on TV. I feel the magic every time i walk up the steps and out onto the stands and you get the first look at that wonderful pitch all bright and beautiful and perfect, and the noise when we score, it just makes you feel joy. Hope you are lucky enough to experience it one day.
Geof Thompson I don’t think he knows English with how he said it.
Not being mean or anything but I've been to Goodison many times im a blue so
Goodison Park will be forever missed
It's a grand old team to play for it's a grand old team to support and if you know your history it's enough to make your heart go WHOAAA we don't care what the red side say
Great old stadium
Ive been an Everton Fan for 9 years since i was born goodison theres nothing like it I DONT WANT US TO MOVE EFC
We have to... Goodison is old and falling to bits..
Excellent video,Thanks for posting.👍
Another cool vid cheers bro
3:55 I loved the old away end before they seated it. It lost something when they turned it into a single tier
@1:15 it says 1924 England V Ireland but at the top right there's hand writing saying Everton v Liverpool. Also, i think the player looking into the crowd is wearing an Everton jersey
It's definitely an Everton game and probably a 1924-1929 derby based on the kit and the clothes, but the keeper is throwing me because I thought it was Billy Coggins, and his only derby wasn't until 1934. Everton fielded a lot of different goalies in the Goodison derby of this era so open for a historian to pin it down. 1924 was Alfie Harland, 1926 Taylor 1926 Ben Howard-Baker, 1927 Taylor, 1928 Davies.
It's a pun maybe (Everton: Ireland / England: Liverpool)
Love these videos, please do the hawthorns!
nice video bruh!
I'm not an Everton supporter but I can still say that Goodison Park is a lovely old ground!.
Oh it is spelt Goodison
@@goldengirl6960 I feel ashamed !
@@merseydave1 it's okay. Sometimes i spell things wrong too so there's nothing to ever be ashamed of. It is okay
@@goldengirl6960 seriously I am dyslexic
@@merseydave1 me too mate I'm dyslexic
Some great pictures but at least 3 incorrect captions.
Yep. Noticed the England vs Ireland but it's a mersey derby with Billy Coggins in goal. Billy was never capped.
@@TheGiantKillers - "Hickson 1950 with Floodlights in the background and Goodison 1966 without circles behind the goals - went in 64/65... few more maybe
Like the old Goodison road stand and Park end stand.
A proper stadium
2:50 (and later colour photo) The only team to wear an all-white kit, against Brazil, in 1966, was Bulgaria. It was Brazil's only win, in that World Cup, 2-0.
The move will be ok. Bramley isn’t like the curvy other new grounds. It’s tight, square and football ground vibe. Sound.
WHY a picture of a Wolves goal at the end?!?!
.....the mind boggles....???
👍
1:15 it says on the photo Everton v Liverpool
I always thought they could have added a second tier to the park end, theres enough space behind the stand.
There is not enough space at the sides with overhanging roofs on the side stands.
Great expense for little gain. Best is to move for the landlocked site with poor transport access.
New stadium instead lol
what about those cut out parts behind the goals?
Shows a clip of wolves winning at goodison the other week at the end of the video?
Was going to say that
I think hes a wolves fan who does these
The reason why Everton left Anfield was not the rent. Many issues.
Wow definitely the best shed in the Liverpool
Do stokes old one
Everton first announce plans for a new stadium *22 years ago.*
And now it's half built
@@colinmumford267
Without adequate transport provision.
@@johnburns4017 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 they and the council will sort it no problem, do u really think they won't with how big the project is , goodison and analfield has coped perfect for years with exactly that problem
@@colinmumford267
Once again..
*_Without adequate transport provision._*
Not difficult to understand.
So far no suitable transport has been arranged. *None.* Stop making things up.
@@johnburns4017 I havnt made anything up not once in any of my statements
Hillsborough stadium?
Why write the name Hillsborough on this site ? This ground should be Demolished.
Eh!
@@anthonyhousley6934 What ground should be demolished? Goodison or Hillsborough?
Very similar in many ways
Nkce.
😂😅when did young boys wearing hats die out?!
Can I just say to all non evertonians or even non football fans next season is goin to be the very last season goodison park will ever see football played or fans been in the stadium if you can come on come on get down to goodison park to saviour history of one of the best atmospheres there will be tickets for cup games but prem will be sold out , please all prem supporters sell out ur end cuz you won't witness goodison ever again it's definitely one of the grandest old stadiums in football stacked in history and first for many many footballing additions ,I will shed a year at the very last game been some highs but been some lows but wouldn't change the grad old lady for anywhere else ,tickets are available on line as I say time is running out before we move to our new stadium on the Mersey
1966 - Brazil v Hungary, not USSR?
USSR played West Germany in the semi final at Goodison
No it isn't. It's a group match between Brazil and Bulgaria, (which Brazil won 2-0.) When Hungary played Brazil, also in a group match, they were in their usual red shirts ( and beat Brazil 3-1.)
all seater nonsense forced in by them lot ruined everything
Hopefully have safe standing at the new ground. 58k is too small. We'll fill that with the current season ticket waiting list. Safe standing will increase it to 68k, which I hope will happen 🤞
Don't move please
Over 3 years it will be demolished
Yeah that really will be a sad day....so many great times at "the old lady"...💙👍🏻
