- The original Wembley Stadium, formerly known as the Empire Stadium) was a football stadium in Wembley Park, London, which stood on the same site now occupied by its successor, the new Wembley Stadium.
The demolition in 2003 of its famous Twin Towers upset many people worldwide.[1] Debris from the stadium was used to make the Northala Fields in Northolt, London.
Wembley hosted the FA Cup final annually, the first in 1923, the League Cup final annually, five European Cup finals, the 1966 World Cup Final, and the final of Euro 96.
Brazilian footballer Pelé once said of the stadium: "Wembley is the cathedral of football. It is the capital of football and it is the heart of football,"[2] in recognition of its status as the world's best-known football stadium.
The stadium hosted the 1948 Summer Olympics, rugby league’s Challenge Cup final, and the 1992 and 1995 Rugby League World Cup Finals.
It also hosted numerous music events, including the 1985 Live Aid charity concert, and in professional wrestling hosted the WWF’s SummerSlam in 1992.

how on earth you destroy and demolish such a heritage ad history and character? what a crime, should have been preserved and restored and renovate, you cant buy this history and heritage with money
San Siro is the next one
Greg pool space in London is a problem
@Jimmy Durex think thats more to do with the county itself
My heart broke when I saw the demolished towers. They were so beautiful and majestic.
I seen that moment taken place at the time and thought wow peace of history here being taken down for ever 😒
Anyone who attended The Old Wembley Stadium, must have understood that changes needed to come!
The Biggest Mistake was This ... They should have Kept The Twin Towers and re-positioned at the start of Wembley Way.
Here, here that man. (I'm from Wembley and demolishing them tour out a bit of our souls!)
i still believe they could have save the towers and make then part of the new Stadium. I didn't see the point of demolishing everything
I don't see the point of them destroying any of it
Esp Considering the new wembley is so sterile
Queen
Over time Wembley took on a life,
The history was almost tangible just walking in, It was alive,
Sadly missed and Pele was absolutely right.
So sad to see history being knocked down to be replaced by something modern.
The new looks cool
@@metroishereyt6662 Not compared to the old one
New wembley looks generic to me
People in 50 years will say the same thing about the current stadium.
I know. We were very sad when our cave was knocked down and they made a house out of trees..
Come si può aver fatto una cosa del genere, abbattuto un glorioso stadio. Che peccato, mi piange il cuore. Da italiano mi dispiace tantissimo... un saluto fratelli inglesi
We should never have. It was as bad as if Italy, for example, were to knock down the Coliseum to make way for a generic modern theatre. Just tragic 😪
Cheers pal. You are so right.
I'm probably in a minority, but they should never have demolished the old stadium, and could have still had it for pop concerts etc. A new National Stadium would have been better located in Birmingham imo, easier to get to too etc. A great video and a place I visited many times from my childhood through the decades, Football, Speedway, Bon Jovi (Concert just before it was demolished).
4:04 That's how it should have been preserved, lovely walkway with trees. Should have kept the exterior and just completely renovated inside, digging down abit to fit more seats in.
So glad I was able to go to the old Wembley 3 times & watch my club Birmingham win twice in 91 & 95 & then see England beat Poland in 99.
66 Everton Cup final and England Wining The World Cup
so wholesome, thank's so much !
Wait... we had helicopters in 1935
Nice vid please make one of Hampden if you can 👍
Saliba was fantastic tonight! As was Jesus and Zinchenko!
Such a crying shame that the corporate men in suits got their way and demolished the grand old lady. THE most iconic venue in the whole world. Point of order though: the match where the official crowd was 126,000 they stated an estimated 300,000. This is incorrect. The accepted estimate for that day was 200,000. That's just the 200,000 then!! Amazing stadium with such evocative memories. Wonderful memories. Gone forever. Never forgotten 💔
After seeing this I think the world cup 2030 should take place in England and it's final in Wembley.
Fantastic vid!
Fantastic new channel. As somewhat of a football historian myself i know that Archibald Leitch was the mastermind behind many British football stadia.
Not Wembley though
@@doyoulikebeetroot yes not Wembley..but a lot of other british football stadia
@@orlandotrustfullandhiscosm4110
Aye, true.
don't forget all the rugby league matches played at Wembley.
Lovely video
Love the classic look of old British stadiums. Now most of them look modern and .....mmmm...just like the rest of the modern stadiums.
Can you do Hampden, the Azteca, La Bombonera, and Maracana.
Great stuff!
I never been to Wembley. But you forgot Madonna when she brought her world tours there from the Who's that girl tour, blonde ambition tour, girlie show and her sticky sweet tour. I'm a Michigan native and I watch her tours from this iconic stadium. these tours were from 1987, 1990, 1993 and 2008
Brilliant!
Thanks Pat!
I wish they never demolished these beautiful historical English stadium 😭
One of the greatest football stadiums, please make one video about the Maracana Stadium
It's on my list...
@@abriefhistoryof3 Ah yes the old "Journalista Mauro Filho stadium" NOT Maracana
Look at those achievements we back in the day. This stadium 300 days. The empire state building, similar rate of construction. Then look at the pathetic time it takes for things to get built now.
Hey! Where can I found that pictures?
This is like demolishing the empire State building.
I get its outdated and the pitch is big but they should have renovated and modernized it.
Worked out for Wimbledon, Maracana, etc
It's better giving the old wembley to crystal palace
Kucing Malaya is it bad that I had to look up what crystal palace was? I’m British and I thought it was a themepark or something
You’d never fill it! 😂
Mna boleh bg,sebab dorang bangunkan stadium baru tapak sama gak
You didn't mention that there used to be a dog track around the outside of the pitch. Presumably that was built over the old running track from the Olympic games?
I was saddened to see the twin towers demolished, I don't see why they couldn't have been taken down and moved down to Wembley way (they moved London Bridge for God sake !). Would have been a nice contrast, the old and the new
7:45 Nothing but one word: crime
Wembley looked like it was in the countryside when first being built
It was.
@@gordonbennett5638 & @Sean Speed - I'm from Wembley born 65 - as a nipper we'd bunk into ANY event there - under the turnstiles - up the walls - (the assault course later when in the Paras was doddle :)) lived in US for years - recent visit back - the old expansive car parks that surrounded the stadium have gone and it looks like NYC or Hong Kong with alll the tower blocks for the rich that have ENGULFED our national stadium - that in my opinion should have at LEAST kept the Twin Towers at Olympic Way!
Was it EVER officially called Wembley Stadium ? I know it was owned by a "Wembley stadium plc"
What a fucking stadium it was
I have a piece of the old Wembley at home
The running track around the old Wembley stadium spoiled it the fans where too far away from game
just watched some Queen concert clips with Freddie back in the 80s... How on earth could they destroy a stadium like the original Wembley with the iconic towers? Not only football but so many great concerts took place there. The new stadium is "just another modern stadium"... as nice as it might be, it lacks the "soul", man. what a shame
You forgot the greyhound racing. A regular occurance at the old Wembly stadium.
& speedway. The last fixture there was the 1981 world final, which many felt was the best meeting ever.
Queen's stadium
Legends Left Legecy...
300.000 nope. Good video though.
Hope Englishman shouldn't do this to LORD'S CRICKET STADIUM in LONDON...That is such an iconic stadium. It feels so classic when I watched TEST CRICKET there and ENGLAND WON 2019 WORLD CUP FINALS in LORD'S STADIUM 👍🏻
Should never have demolished it
Who in the right mind decided to get rid of the towers? Should be of became a listed building, i can understand renovations to the stadium. The new one has no soul!
300,000 right ..i don't think so maybe 135,000 not 300 000 remember it was half seated too..you only get one fan in a seat. Great videos by the way..
No seats at all in the early days of the old Wembley stadium. Just terracing all the way round
@@nkskro80 not true. About 30.000 seats. There wasn't more than 140.000 at that game.
It looked ancient. Was it ancient ruins?
I prefer the wembley stadium I used to
l'Italia non ha demolito il Colosseo... Perché, Wembley, sì?
.
You can not allowed to climb into the stadium
And to think we could of had a nice park and tower there 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Anyone know when it became an all seater?
1989-90 season if I'm not mistaken. The 1989 FA Cup final had terraces behind the goals but by the next year it was all seater
T Donovan cheers
@@james6417 You're welcome, Mate
They didn’t mention live aid
Johnz J erm.... they did
Ur a queen fan
Tartarian for sure.
Should learn from german with their olimpia stadium
Aid 1986
They should have just improved it not demolish
Progressives have no respect for our traditions, history or things we can identify with. In their quest for perfection and modernisation they would wipe out everything we know, all for the sake of money. Football was destroyed the moment they allowed companies to advertise on players, the moment money entered into the game, all the old grand stadiums that stood for over a hundred years were doomed, because their demand for more wealth was never going to be achieved in such stadiums. The advertising made the game very lucrative and then all the big money men, came in and bought everything up.
There was nothing like going to Upton Park and knowing that was the home of your team for such a long time, it had a history, same like wembley, there is something nostalgic about it, but your progressive is not sentimental, it's all about modernisation, getting on for them, they don't care about past, just the future, that's why they like to label themselves has "the progressives".
I know west hame fans who said no we have to move on, they didn't care about Upton Park, now we have no home, we rent.
The world hasn't changed, but people have, the people today are not like the people in the past, they don't value what they have, they are always wanting more, they are never happy with their lot, they are never content with what they have. I just feel sad, that all the great stadiums have gone and football is all just about money.
Would of looked like???? Learn some grammar
Match of the Century: On 25 November 1953 England v Hungary 3 : 6
Should still be called the empire stadium. No reason to change it
