Thanks to Freeman I had almost forgotten that Watson was *not* meant to be a bumbling sidekick, but a formidable man in his own right, and Sherlock's best friend who he respects.
There's been multiple interpretations of both characters throughout the decades the show's been active.
@@SourGummiWyrm69 Recently I've made myself familiar with the books and Watson kinda is a bumbling sidekick. Or through many books he's not even a sidekick, he's an after-the-fact 2nd hand reporter.
@@mac1991seth he is not. Watson also capable of seeing think as well. Sherlock is just waaay better. There's a million example Sherlock show respect to Watson's mind and this is alone saying something
of course he's not a bumbling sidekick. Dr. Watson was a decorated military doctor in Afganistan.
I resent this, freeman's watson is more on the endearing side and endlessly patient, but he's totally not just a bumbling sidekick
Mycroft Holmes: You're not haunted by the war, Dr. Watson. You miss it.
and something like
Sherlock: If you KNEW you were going to die, what would be the last thing on your mind?
John: "Oh God, please don't let me die?"
Sherlock: Oh come on, use your imagination.
John: I don't have to.
he's a doctor and an army veteran and a lot of that comes into actual play in the BBC version, more so than in other popular depictions of the Holmes and Watson dynamics, i don't get why people think this unless they weren't watching that closely?
RDJ's Sherlock movies are a lot better than they had any right to be.
That's a true statement. And what's even more funny is they are actually more faithful to the Doyle novels than is readily apparent.
That's why two-thirds of any good movie starts with good casting.
Best Sherlock Holmes depicted so far
@usher luck not really. RDJ was better in this.
@usher luck let's agree to disagree my friend. I have read the books. I didn't say RDJ's was the more accurate, I meant who's portrayal I liked better.
2019... And still think that Jude Law is a badass Watson...
Same
Indeed
I do agree
2020... And I still think as same as you....
I agree Jude Law is true John Watson in Sherlock Holmes movie 👍

Watson is a veteran solider after all. He's got little time for fancy tricks
How about a Sherlock Holmes 3, guys. I have been waiting since 2011.
Good news they are working on a third one right now.
Math Blaster, I am so happy!
me to
are they still?
you're in luck guys, Warner Bros just announced that Sherlock Holmes 3 is gonna be released in December 2020.
I love Law's depiction of Watson. He really made that character his own.
Wonderful portayal of the classical duo. More muscle as well as intellect but I appreciate it. I appreciate Richie for protraying Watson as he should, a man of action who can hold his own.
I know right, it seems like the vast majority of portrayals have Watson as a fairly overweight, bumbling, clueless sycophant, which wasn't at all what he was like in the original books. The man DID have military experience prior to meeting Holmes, it certainly stands to reason he'd have some degree of combat prowess.
This is a masterpiece on both hands, bravo to all actors writers who put effort and hard work into the making of a amazing movie 10/10
@@biggiebered6788 Yeah I agree. Plus I feel like the TV adaptation is overrated. Everything in the films feels top notch from the fight sequences to the dialogue.
I guess the Sherlock Holmes stories never meant to be action packed. Sir Conan Doyle always puts more focus on the case and Holmes' deduction rather than action - and whenever Sherlock takes to the streets, he leaves Watson behind and comes back hours later already equipped with all the answers. All the fighting and case solving is just Sherlock's testimony so the books rarely go in-depth describing fights and brawls.
@@BDNeon also, in original novels, was Watson a good deal older than Holmes or close to his age like here?
1:45 Little detail of Holmes actually looking for it
Sherlock Holmes: Watch carefully Watson
_Meanwhile Blackwood thrusting the needle in his face_
Sherlock Holmes: Oh you watched too carefully.
Exactly he could just pushed forward hard as hell 🤦😬
It was to sell his magic ya doofus, it was gonna look like watson dies due to unnatural stab wounds bcuz no one seems to be doing anything, if he thrust it, it will be obvious that blackwood is the killer.
@@biowbe4522 Lol. Unnatural Stab Wounds?? It's Sherlock Holmes!!! Even if anything happened to Watson, he would accuse Blackwood no matter if he did it or not.

Was waiting for someone to point it out... Also it looks like the kick was real... Must have hurt
That would break a neck
Guys head even bangs against the other guys knee
That was one of the best-sold kicks I've ever seen. It just feels VICIOUS.
I love that holmes is pretty much a master martial artist and Watson is a very talented and savage brawler 😂
Holmes being skilled in few types of fighting is close to how he was in the books, so i liked this, both as a reader of A.C. Doyle novels, and as martial arts enthusiast :)
Can’t wait for Sherlock Holmes 3. RDJ and Jude Law are the perfect Holmes and Watson.
When you realize two out of three main Sherlock/Watson pairings of the last decade have all been in the MCU.
I'm really disappointed that director Guy Ritchie won't be returning to direct.
Comedy Bros Likewise, I hope the third one won’t get messed up. 🤞🤞
I agree both of them are perfect Sherlock Holmes and John Watson 👍
@@theseageek I just hope the new director they got tries to keep Ritchie's style. He's a big reason these movies are so electric.
Robert Downey absolutely nailed it. 2021 and I’m still waiting for the third movie. These movies were so much better than they had any right to be.
Same
the way Watson puts the gun in his face while maintaining perfect eye contact is so funny for no reason
I loved this movie. Made Sherlock Holmes even more of a badass than he was in the books.
*like Not *than
They even kept his subtle superhuman strength. In one of the books he casually straightens an iron fire poker, and in this movie and the sequel he exhibits feats of strength that seem kinda mundane until you think about how hard he'd have to kick someone to send them hurtling through a window with enough velocity to still have them travel like 10 more feet after they've left the building.
He was badass in the books too
I love that at 0:20 he keeps choking him even though it looks like he is passed out so he makes sure he isn’t faking it
The glass blade is also a nice bit of foreshadowing of Blackwood's general trickery with his murders.
Yeah, I never noticed that till about half way into the movie
i love how watson isn't afraid to commit homicide (or simple bodily harm) if needed be, love how his character is portrayed in the movies..
I’m guessing the director took into account that Watson was a war vet and thus he had saved/taken many lives in the Afghanistan war.
1:54 not the glass sound but the music sound in the background is so evilllll
Funny thing is, if that were glass, which it is, it would just be a poke in Watson's upper left cheek, near his nose, and the glass would just shatter. It would puncture, due to it's small circumference, but would shatter at the pressure of it hitting the skull.
@@MM-vs2et it would still injure him, enough to distract him, or it might've got his eye if blackwood moved it slightly
That is an amazing weapon for assassination since no one would ever see it coming.
Gg Master Guilty Gear no one would see it, even the user
Martin Anthonio16 look OK ppp
The sound effects - becoming almost silence and then only hearing the stick sounds. I liked that
0:32. The best moment 😍
that moment became a meme
All main actors from two Sherlock Holmes series and movies are/was in the MCU.
Now they need to do the same for the villain actors. I want to see both Mark Strong AND Jared Harris playing villains in the MCU.
@@0megacron Mark Strong will never be in the MCU, because he is the main villain in shazam, meaning he is one of the antagonists in DCEU.
Kind of like how Harry Potter eventually absorbed most of the big name British Actors. Bill Nighy even said he accepted the role of Rufus Scrimgeour because he didn't want to be the only Brit that wasn't in an HP movie
@@sriramsundar8388 well Jared Leto plays the joker as well as the morbius in the mcu , so we can't be so sure ..
Captain Marvel never killed her commanding officer, so if he ever came to earth before Endgame, the guy could probably show up to earth saying, "Where are these avengers I've heard so much about?" and then Iron Man could show up and we'd have a touching reunion
I wish there were more villains like Blackwood. Instead of the unsympathetic sociopath/psychopath who goes "Boohoo, I'm a victim." "My horrendous actions are justified."
No psychopath or sociopath would ever say they’re the victim. They simply don’t care. Blackwood is a great example of that.
The problem is that it sometimes can end up making a characters one dimensional, but it can be done
@@PieroMinayaRojas True. Vergil and Silco are great villains. But The Master of Doctor Who is a great example of a pure evil villain.

That’s pretty wholesome honestly, wish I had a brother like that in school
2:22 badass watson
It took me a couple of viewings to realize in this movie there actually is a slight undercurrent of supernatural events; the mysterious wind that blows through the chamber when the ceremony is interrupted, the crows showing up randomly, and then later Holmes quips something to the effect of "You had better hope it's all superstition because you performed those ceremonies perfectly" just before Lord Blackwood is hung by the chains. I just think its a neat touch.
Mar-Vell and Tony Stark were really good at Stick Fighting techniques
Jude Law is not Mar-Vell. He's Yon-Rogg.
He’s also magneto

Am I the only one who absolutly loves design of Lord Blackwood robe? For me its amazing
He looks like the villain in resident evil 4
The Villain was supposed to be mysterious black magician, and he already used trick at the very beginning
I don't know why but I love that Watson still got a cheap shot in on Blackwood, shows how personally pissed he is.
I imagine it must have been pretty hard to make a glass spike like that in that time period. Not impossible, but hard.

Blackwood could have just taken one long step and killed Watson 😂
He could, but that would have defeated the purpose of making it appear as if Watson died of mystical reasons.
Music is the thing ... inevitable part of Sherlock
Come on with the second sequel, already!
I've been slavering for it ever since Holmes complimented Madam Simza on her hedgehog goulash!
HOLMES and downey jr are both genius, natural fit, downey is so multifaceted intelligence it staggers the mind,he also sings to perfect pitch, yes there must be a 3 holmes and 4th and oh my
Iron Man and Yon Rogg! Careful Tony, Yon is plotting against you
RDJ & JL is meant for this role really... I mean the tandem and intensity is just .. WOW! ♥️🙏😍
Ok, something’s confuses me about this scene:
*spoilers for any who hasn’t seen this movie*
It’s later revealed that Blackwood’s “sorcery” is just misdirection and other trickery.
If that’s the case, though, how is this woman in a trance and about to kill herself?
The best idea I have is that Blackwood planned to be captured this time, and that this victim was faking it. But that’s just a hypothesis, I don’t have much actual evidence for it.
probably or manipulation maybe?because you can see holmes struggle with her arm so that means she put up strength so dont thing she was faking it.
or maybe even bribery like the guard in the prison
It's narcotics. There are substances that can be used to manipulate human brain into thinking and doing things that seems supernatural or more specifically (like in this scene) abnormal.
i think he does plan to be captured because after this he will fake his death and try to make the public he has been ressurected right? it is to make his so called "magic" is believable.
and as for the woman in this scene, i agree with the person above. might be just some drugs. as for why he does this, i believe it is so Holmes, Watson, and the police will try to find and capture him.
The answer is obvious, isn't it? Drugs.
2:27
I know only one Lord Blackwood and he is a very inteligent Sea Slug
Nearly spat out my drink when I heard the name “lord Blackwood”. He’s looking rather good for a sea slug.
I understood that reference
Inspector lining up troops that are moderately trained in combat, then there’s these two guys a detective genius and a doctor, take out like six guys by themselves.
Doctor who was a soldier, and detective who is skilled in fighting, just like the one in the books :)
Doctor is an Afghan war veteran and Sherlock has experience in hand to hand combat
Iconic pose...0:34 .
This was a great cast it's just sad they didn't finish the trilogy. But I guess it would be hard to make the third part especially when it came out so great. They had a phenomenal villain getting better each movie.
My man lucius Malfoy gettin caught by the muggles
These were quite good
The one thing I don't get is if Blackwood never had any powers, why the hell does the girl try to stab herself and all the braziers burn out at exactly the same time the ritual is interrupted?
Power of drugs and suggestion. Underground areas can have their airflow controlled easily by opening and closing off certain passages and fans, so 2 or 3 mooks to open up/close the right doors and turn on a fan to produce the wind. The braziers could have several timed methods to extinguish themselves. The plan was always for the wind to blow and fires go out as she stabs herself ending to ritual.
0:30 best part🙂🙂
"Pencil sketches of this movie which was at the beginning with music"
It's weird that Mark strong actually fits sherlocks description more so than rdj
Sherlock mentions he was looking for the glass spike, and at 1:45 you can see when Blackwood looks away, he looks right at it then looks away.
Mr. Stark what r u doing here?
Can't wait for Sherlock Holmes 3. Maybe they make old Watson n meet the infamous bloody return of Sherlock Holmes...
I don't think they ever explained how the fires were eerily put out upon interrupting the ritual.
Imagine an Arkham style video game featuring these versions of the characters
Seriously it could be done, integrate a movie script into a game storyline is easy. That would be a fun game
I don't know but i found it funny that Holmes needs to remind Watson that 'You are doctor after all' so he should not kill the chap :)
Great combat
Because I was looking. For it....genius!
I remember the first time I saw this movie.. no one had told me what it was, the volume was too low to hear, and my family wouldn't let me turn it up so I had no idea what was going on for the first ten minutes or so.
Isn't it funny that both SHERLOCKS and Watsons characters from the movies and BBC show are all in the MCU
that one guy who take gun to close range.
RDJ and JL were perfect for these roles.

Awesome movie.
0:03 it must be painful 😢
My dear Watson
10yrs are enough for us to have part 3 right lmao
Maybe it’s just me, but Lord Blackwood really looks like a human version of Professor Ratigan
For this part of the movie too I would also argue if Watson had a bit of adrenaline pent up. Cause he really doesn't argue with anything Holmes is doing just for the opportunity to just go wreck some faces.
Love it wen Watson cracks blackwood over the head
2:32 that officer on the left rifle butts the dude on the ground but is like 2 ft away from actually hitting him.
lol holmes use distraction by covering the bad dude by using hat while watson just walk casually to fight them
