This reminds me of the books uglies and pretties by Scott Westerfield , except the plastic surgery there is free and mandatory for everyone when they turn 16. Also the surgery not only makes you look "pretty" but also causes small lesions in the brain basically making people docile, friendly, shallow bimbos. I would still put the society in a moral gray area because there's no hatred, conflict or mental illness. (Edit: And also everyone gets to be pretty not just a lucky few or the rich and privileged like in our world)

I realize the ending was meant to be 'open' to interpretation, but I still wonder what her face looked like? Was it TRULY "bad" or would we consider her beautiful? This actually kind of reminds me of that old _Twilight Zone_ episode, ironically called 'Eye of the Beholder', where beautiful people are apparently considered "ugly" and the people considered "naturally beautiful" actually look like pig-faced freaks. _(Literally._ They had snouts and everything) The main character girl has tried multiple plastic surgeries in order to "look normal" i.e. like the "pig-faced" people, but all the surgeries thus far have failed and the doctor claims he "can't help her." She runs off through the hospital, crying and absolutely hysterical. And we are shown the ghoulish faces of the hospital staff around her.
At the end, another "ugly" (i.e. INCREDIBLY HANDSOME) looking guy approaches her in the hospital and tells her that there is a place she can live alongside other "ugly" (i.e. incredibly BEAUTIFUL people) like _them,_ a normal place (a town or village something) where people look like actual PEOPLE _instead_ of pig-faced freaks. The man takes her hand and leads her away and the episode ends.

(I didn't make the theory so don't attack me for it. Just sharing)
the plastic people are dead and the girl wants to kill herself which is why her family is telling her she's too young. The doctor reacted badly even though the girl was complimenting her and when she finally agreed, she gave the girl a consequence that the girl couldn't go through with (paying so much money up front). later, the girl's friend shows up with plastic surgery meaning that she killed herself which finally pushed the MC to go ahead and kill herself in any way she could (seeking surgery from sketchy doctors) the mother's reaction to the daughter's face was realizing that she was dead along with them.

It’s more literal than that. I think the obvious interpretation is the correct one: children are malleable and impressionable. A lot of us, including myself, have a “live and let live” attitude to plastic surgery. What do I care what someone else does to their face? But we have to consider the effect it will have on children. How can we expect children to feel beautiful, or even normal, when every person they look up to has a face that only surgery could create.

I like how the movie has a bit of truth in it, people are slowly starting to obey those "beauty standards" and think that you must look a certain way and have that type of nose and that color of eyes in order to be beautiful, which is not true, everyone is beautiful in their own way, you don't have to look like x model. We will end up dressing and looking the same if we keep walking on this path

Thank you for this re-cap. That ending really irks me. There's only 3 outcomes it's not a grand mystery movie that should end on a cliffhanger. 1) Surgery was a success - but we know that wasn't the case, 2) She look plastic but it's all messed up looking, 3) She has some scars from surgery but she look exactly the same as she always had. #3 Seem like it would have been the best way to end the movie. But again I'm glad I watched the cliff-notes because that would have waited my time.

Plastic surgery is so common in Korea that people get it as gifts for their high school graduation. Comparable to Americans getting cars for their graduation.

Normal facial features scare me and I feel constantly worried unable to carry out other important tasks. I think it all comes down to what kind of environment you grew up in..like what you saw growing up you believe it.. Like I don't know anyone who has done plastic surgery irl like in person and I have also not seen anyone talking about it.. And I also wondered why guys on the internet always complains that girls wear heavy makeup all the time like I have only witness this way less where girls are wearing make up on normal day with casual clothes but mostly here we use heavy makeup only at a weddings... But it's not always rainbows and unicorns either like people don't judge us by beauty most of the time but I said MOST... Here I have no idea why everyone is so obsessed with fair skin like westerners would kill to have this perfectly tanned skin like us but I have no idea why our beauty standard is fair/paled skinned.. I was so insecure growing up cause of my skin cause I have like honey coloured skin and my brother has pale complexion cause he has never seen sun since forever and I have always been playing around in sun and I was constantly compared with my brother like even my parents.. But later at 13 one girl litrally changed my whole perspective of seeing this (BTW that girl is still my bestfriend after 7 years) well she was a transfer student who came from UK and during break she came to me and asked if she could touch me and at first I was like dude what??! But then a sec later I said okay cause I was curious what does she want,,we were strangers and she touched my face and then my hands and said and I quote 'oh my god you are so perfectly tanned,, this is my first time seeing someone with so perfect tan naturally. YOU LOOK SO BEAUTIFUL' yes I am putting that in caps...and at that time I didn't knew what tanning or perfectly tanned means but I did know that it was a compliment and then later next day I asked what she meant and then she explained what it means and also ranted about how ridiculous beauty standards are and we talked for a long time and soon became besties.. Well later I think that same year we were taught that our skin colours change according to melanin and I was so pissed at my parents and relatives for comparing me at every family gathering that in the next gathering I taught them the whole chapter and told them that even a child know what the heck skin complexion is all about so must the adults should know before passing out any comments on it.. And no one complained about it later.. Well my relatives are all educated adults like they all are in education field like my dad is hod professor, my cousins are professors my aunt is a highschool teacher, my grandma is a retired Principal so it's not that they don't know how it works but they just threw the common knowledge out of the window just for some stupid beauty comparison
