Minimal Mic'ing Techniques &

- Here’s the idea:
We’re all pretty much stuck at home right now and recording drums is really fun, right?! So, I figured why not have some fun and create a play-along version of “Welcome Home”, from my new album "Reed Between the Lines", and see how other drummers would approach it? Except, it’s more than just a play-along ... take it one step further and record yourself/post a video of your performance. PLEASE, #REPLACEME
Often in the studio world there’s a negative connotation associated with the idea of “getting replaced” on a song, but here it has a positive spin. It’s more about “how would YOU play on this song, if given the opportunity?” I invite you to use your creativity to come up with how you hear it. Please do absolutely whatever you’d like as far as sounds/vibe, groove/part, playing crazy fills, not playing crazy fills, lots of mics, minimal mics, lots of reverb, not lots of reverb … literally what evs, K? The main thing is to HAVE FUN! Here are the incredible musicians you’ll be playing with:
Andrew Synowiec on guitar
Kait Dunton on rhodes
Cooper Appelt on bass
me on perc (sorry can’t replace that lol)
OK ... enough about that!
ALSO, in this video, I discuss ways that I go about minimal mic'ing: 2 mics on the drums, 3 mics on the drums, and maybe ... just maybe 4 mics. I also discuss how I go about doing a quick mix in Pro Tools with said mic set-ups.
So, there you go! Please, download the track and REPLACE ME using your favorite mic technique, minimal or maximal. Post your videos on the ol' insta, fb, the tic tok, whatever, and tag me. Be sure to use the hashtag #replaceme ... Have fun!!!

Thanks! New vid with Sean Hurley coming this Monday!
damn dude those 2 guitars L and R in the intro sound sick with whatever that delay thing thats going on. Sounds so pleasing.
dude, you are just so good. uhhhhhh yeaaaaah. please keep those videos coming! and that humor too!!!!! cheers
Thank you! I really appreciate that!
This video is spectacular.
THANKS!
Your recording approach 100% supports the track, it’s natural and transparent. Thank you for sharing your process!
Thank YOU for the kind words!
Dude you got such a natural groove, I love it!
Hope your channel blows up!

Lol sorry?
@@JakeReedmusic no no it made for a great laugh!
Outstanding. Great info. This one will be replayed, replayed, replayed......Thanks!
Glad to hear it! Thank you!
Good to hear the unprocessed drum sounds as a comparison. The 'raw' kit sounds great, making the processed result even better! Great video!
Thank you! Happy to help!
John Scofield called. He wants his guitar sound back 😆
Lol. That’s Andrew Synowiec on gtr. Great LA studio guy.
@@JakeReedmusic He’s great
We were making the same joke when we recorded it, but it sound SO GOOD!
@@JakeReedmusic it does sound awesome . . . . . super creamy saturation. Besides, I’m sure Scofield got elements of that sound from guys who came before him. Nobody is all-original, there’s always a hint of the past in there
LOVE THIS SOUND
Thank you!
Several classic sounds nailed big time
What a fantastic video, thank you. This is the best 'comparison' video I can remember seeing; so instructive and informative. And, your presentation schtick cool; very easy to listen to and watch and entertaining without being too over-the-top. Thanks again. Wonderful stuff!
Thanks! So glad you enjoyed it!
Legend! The radiator plug is sooooo effective - instant vibe! I’m going to try my 635 in that position this week wooo!! Awesome stuff, Jake.. keep up the super informative content 🙏🏼
Thank you! Yes, love the radiator. Have fun!
Nothing like a groovy drummer!
Jake-- just want to say I'm going to enjoy your channel while your subscriber count is low. Not expecting it to stay that way for long. Would you ever do an episode on your favorite snares/cymbals/mics that you find yourself using in most situations? Sort of a desert island list since us youtube viewers with small attention spans love things like that. And lists, we love lists. Thanks for putting this useful info out there. You're truly a pro presenting info in an accessible way.
Thank you! I appreciate the kind words and the wonderful suggestions! "Desert Island drums" and "lists of things" sounds like it could be a fun direction to go in for a while!
@@JakeReedmusic us simple-minded folk love that crap.. throw up some affiliate links and you’ll be cruising. Thanks again Jake, excited for future content regardless!
All of the protools stuff was really helpful for me as someone very ignorant of how to record drums. Thanks, Jake!
Glad to help, Brett!
Very cool stuff Jake! Thanks.
Thanks, Camil! Hope all is well with you!
@@JakeReedmusic Thanks Jake, all is well on my end. All the best to you.. Will keep in touch.
Superb playing, engineering and mixing Jake. Would you be up for doing a video on all the acoustic treatment in your room? Listening to all the mics i can hear that the room is really well treated. Have you done any recordings without any treatment and if so were there any standing waves, flutter echoes etc?
Thank you! I think I’ve discussed the sound treatment here and there in some of my other videos but I could definitely do a video dedicated to it. The tricky part would be A/B-ing the room with and without the treatment, since everything is built into the room. When I moved in there was nothing on the walls, which produced so many flutters and weird sounds. The guy who treated it did a killer job on deadening the room as much as possible and cleaning up some of the low end build up. It’s not a big room to begin with so it’s better to treat it more like a drum booth. I have another space in the house with higher ceilings if I ever really need an open room sound, but it’s a real pain moving all the drums and mics, not to mention operating Pro Tools. Not to shamelessly plug my new album Reed Between the Lines, BUT, the first 5 songs were recorded in my “drum booth” and the last 5 were recording in my living room. I wanted more of a “live” sound for the jazz trio stuff so we did it all in the same room. Anyway, check it out and you can hear the difference a room makes! Thanks!
Enjoying these videos Jake ! Trying some drum recording for the 1st time in a while + loads of good drum fodder here Thanks 🥁
Thank YOU! Glad you’re enjoying the videos! Have fun recording!
So glad I found this channel. Your drums sound immaculate. I wanna be like you when I grow up.

Such great sounds you create! Your playing is outstanding
Quite the insane setup you have for that lil room :) With that gear you could have got a small house haha. Loving your channel!

There's a video from the Tiny Desk series sound engineer where he talks about the *ahem* GLYN JOHNS technique. One of the comments is from someone who apparently worked with Glyn a lot in the 80s, which might be worth checking out for reference if you wanted!
Thanks for the great video again Jake!
cool. will have to check it out! There's a great video of GLYN JOHNS, himself, talking about this too which is pretty hilarious. He's like "WE NEVER USED TO MEASURE ANYTHING, THAT'S ALL B.S." or something like that. Love it! So funny.
@@JakeReedmusic Hahaha! I watched that video, what a British response!
Awesome content as always, just did my take on your #replaceme challenge and released it a few minutes ago!
Thanks, Mike! You're video sounds great! Love you sounds and pocket!
I'm really loving your vids!!! Recorder Man surprised me, sounded very "accurate" and usable without much messing. That EV Phat Mic technique seemed to need some Sansamp or something, weird cause that spot works great for me with an RE15. Hearing all these back to back is so helpful! Thx
Thanks dude! Yeah, the EV is a pretty lofi mic ... it's cool cuz it's omni but it def needs to be completely blasted with Sansamp or anything of that nature to be effective lol ... Another great option for that position is a Coles = super phat!
Dude...this is great... Glyn Johns...first time viewer here. Super helpful! Looking forward to more vids. I recently had a baby...game-changer.

This video could be summed up by saying "Less is more". Only thing missing is a Blumlein pair. I friggin love those.
Totally! I have a pair of AEA N8’s in Blumlein for my room mics, but not for this video lol!
Man this is cool
Thanks, dude!
Glynn John's...That was some smooth subliminal messaging. The man partially responsible for the sound of Zeppelin.
Great video again! Did you use any EQ for the OH mics or only on drum bus? Thanks for doing these!
Thanks! I put a hi shelf on the Coles - only like +2 dB just because they're so dark, especially in my room ... But, that's about it!
@ctfalci Hey thanks so much!! A legend 😂

Thanks! 70s New Beats
great info !!! just subbed
Yay!
Jake! Lovin your channel. What’s that cloth on the top part of your rack Tom? Has a little thing under it too? Sounds great!!
Thanks! It's just a folded up piece of cloth with a bunch of gaff tape haha! The trick is to find the sweet spot of how close to the edge of the drum you tape it down ... more toward the center = more muffled but less tone (and low end) ... too far toward the edge ... less muffled and more tone but perhaps too many overtones/unwanted ring. For me, it all depends on the context of the recording at hand. Sorry, that was long ... haha
love the stuff man. also you look like ron swanson 🤪
Ha! Thanks!
I'm subbed this is great.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
I'm not a drummer, but my style of recording drums is kinda vanilla. I do pretty much what you do except I have my stereo overheads in a spaced pair with the mono ribbon in the middle kind of making an equilateral triangle kinda thing with them all equidistant from the snare drum and don't have an over the shoulder mic or a crotch/dirt mic, mostly due to lack of inputs. My go to room mic is a stereo LDC (Vanguard V44s) in XY or Blumelein and that's about it. I don't do anything too special cause I don't have my own kit and usually just go and record my buddy's DW custom kit where I can't leave any of my mics up.
Sounds like a great set up! I’ve been wanting to try the Vanguard mics.

Great videos you've been making. So long time since you last time made one. What about to soon make a new video? 🙂
Thanks! Yes ... soon! My wife just had a baby so I've been being a dad for the past few months.
@@JakeReedmusic Congrats to you all, Jake. 🙂🥰👍
I mean it certainly helps that you have a really nice pair of Coles 4038s
True! But a lot of it is still tuning and touch. Mics can only do so much. I love my 635a and I got it for $50 on eBay! Coles are great too but not always the right call … nothing a little EQ can’t fix!
@@JakeReedmusic Man, I would love a pair of really nice Ribbons like those Coles but I almost also don't want to have something so fragile and nice and expensive. I would be like my mother worried about leaving the stove on every time I plugged them in hoping I don't hit the phantom power or something.
I have one of those 635a's.. I think I was able to find one for like $80 on reverb or something. love it on vocals. Haven't had much luck with snare though. Maybe I'll try experimenting with it some more. That side snare sounded pretty good to me.
I love the 635 right over the kick drum pointing at the shell or even pointing down toward the floor. Since it’s omni you get a lot of shell should from each drum.
@@JakeReedmusic I’ll give her a try!
Hey man i’m a big fan i just got a new snare for christmas could you do a video on how to get that Motown, hollow, loose snare sound? Keep up the awesome videos
Hey! I’ve actually been meaning to do a video on this topic! One day!

love your videos, especially this one and the 70s sounds one. Question: this snare sounds perfect to my ears, just wondering, is there really just one pc of tape on it? how high is that tuned and how do you get such little ring/snare buzz with such little dampening? (in the 70s vid your snare sounded wildly ringing and bad when you showed it unaffected) thanks!
I can't remember now but yeah, either one or two pieces of tape or a cloth near the edge of the drum. This Gretsch chrome over brass snare gets really dry really fast so it's easy to over dampen. it's not tuned super high in this video. just sort of medium. it's all about finding the balance of ring/muffling, tuning/tone, and snare tension!
@@JakeReedmusic thanks Jake. Keep up the great videos and excellent drumming

Great video, really wondering on how you connected that Behringer p 16 to your Apollo 8p!! I wanna buy one!
Thanks! I connect the Behringer p 16 to the Apollo via the 1/4" outputs on the Apollo ... that way it's all "analog" instead of using the ADAT jacks. You lose a couple of headphone channels but it works fine for what I do, which is mostly tracking drums, and every so often a small rhythm section.
Jake Reed Thanks! Yeah I want to be able to record my rhythm section live in one room, and thought about buying 2 or 3.
Balex Strand I really like them! And they’re not terribly expensive compared to some other the other options.
Love you GLYN JOHNS
GLYN. JOHNS.
Funky
Thanks!
Love the vids! Just starting out with learning to record my drums. Quick question, looking to do the “70’s” sound and wondered if you were ever able to pull something like that off with 2 mics. Obviously on a budget in a unfinished basement, but curious about your opinion. Much appreciated!
I usually opt for all close mics but I bet if you put enough baffling around the kit to minimize room reflections and put an overhead mic as low as you can without hitting it, you could get some nice, tight, muffled tones.
Thanks Jake!
Chicago beef and sausage
What do you suggest doing if you don’t have a clip or boom mic stand for individual drum mics?
Improvise! Gaff tape and floor lamp?
Haha That’s not a bad idea

Still laughing 😂 😂😂
Whats these radiator and destroyer and annihilator plugins do that eq can't do?
They saturate and distort.
i have a question in old times i say 70 80 s really the songs or the mixes have a too much things and details like 1000000 programs for edit the sound or something or they really recorded good basic and is it
Cool studio, How do you set the drum sound to be in the same room?
Thanks! I record a bit, then listen, then adjust tuning/mic placement/etc, record again, listen again, make changes, repeat until it’s all dialed!
I’m looking for a super simple way and this seems perfect. What kind of mic is the one “over the shoulder “ in addition to the kick mic?
You can really use anything but this specific mic is a Mojave MA-1000.
@@JakeReedmusic thank you Sir, Reed between the lines is on the Monday docket
@@djfglobal3377 yaaaaay!!!
BUT WHAT DO YOU DO IF YOU NEED TO TEXT WHILE YOURE SHOOTING VIDEO?! lol
hahaha! We all have to make sacrifices sometimes.
Man, i have a question... these mic you were using on the toms, are they condensers? Doesn't it catch too much sound from the around? like, the cymbals, snare, kick, another tom? Actually i never saw anyone using condensers in toms... can you explain me, why is it "better" than dynamics mics for drums? or when is it better?
Good question! I wouldn't say they're "better" as much as just a different sound. I prefer the sound of condensers on toms b/c they sound clearer to my ears and pick up more of the subtleties in music that has a more dynamics. While they do pick up more ambient sounds, to my ears their off-axis response is more pleasing than dynamic mics like 421s - especially with cymbals. The other thing is most of the time mixers end up gating the toms anyway, so bleed isn't an issue. A lot of engineers here in LA use condensers on toms as much as you see 421s.
@@JakeReedmusic Thanksss mann, i got it!!! I'll make some tests in my nexts recordings hahaha. Aaand, i just met your channel today and it is amazing, greetings from Brazil! I hope your channel grow up, serious
Every time I use or hear a 414 I moan about how I don’t own one. It’s just “the” sound to my ears.
get em!
Have you any idea how Unknown Mortal Orchestra does his freaking drums???
No idea but I love those sounds!
There is a Jamie Lidell's podcast with guy from UMO, he talks about taking his sounds trought cassete recorder many times
i’m using a sure sm57 on my snare and an AT2020 as an overhead and i’ve been finding my snare to sound really flat and dead when i record. I love the hollow sounding motown thing but i still need the snap. Any tips?
First thing I would say is to try to tune the snare as close to how you want it to sound and then experiment with the overhead mic placement. It depends on your room size/shape, but try it about 3 ft directly over the snare and see if you’re getting a similar tone to how it sounds to your ears in the room. Then see what it sounds like if you lower it a few inches. Then see what it sounds like if it’s a few inches above where you started. Try to find the clearest recorded representation of your drums with that one mic. Then, add in the snare mic. Try flipping the phase on the snare mic and see how that changes the sound. Try angling the snare mic more down into the drum and see how that sounds vs more parallel to the head. You mic have to use a little muffling on the snare if you’re going for the Motown thing. Good luck!
@@JakeReedmusic that’s so helpful thanks a lot man
