    I used to have a 4 car garage turned studio filled to the brim with audio gear until I downsized and got rid of almost all of it. It got to a point to where I just didnt know where to start recording anymore and I burnt out. I would dabble more than create.. so I turned a small fortune and stopped recording about 3 years ago until recently I am getting back into it again. Nothing major tho (for now). Just 5 good mics, yamaha cs1x keys with midi, drums, bass, guitar, percussive stuff, steinberg urrt2, grace m101 for clean headroom, and that's it.

    Hey Jake!! I Just found you from your Andrew Masters Interview - LOVE the Vintage Gretsch Drums (I'm an old school Gretsch guy), and vintage gear in general ... I also am a huge Peter Erskine fan (took a few lessons from him as well, in the 80's (I'm Old)... Such an immense inspiration/mentor to me as well... I bought my 1st real Ride cymbal based on his at the time (20" K dark ride - still use it all the time!)... I really wish I still had my 1st drum kit - a 70's Pearl fiberglass concert tom kit (See Peter Criss's kit on the 1st Kiss Alive LP - Same exact kit!)... Ohhhhh... that 70's sound! I am so envious that you have Peter's actual old Yamy Kit - which sound amazing!... [ BTW - hate to correct you - but I believe that is a Xylophone - Not a Marimba - which typically has graduated keys that get narrower as they get higher in pitch, and also have curved resonators (long to short to long again), as opposed to going from long to short up the keyboard ] ... Like you - I am a man of all genre's and percussives (my studio has SOOO many boxes of toys) ~ old school studio drummer (80's - 90's been there done that L.A. thing) ~ and a retired HS band director as well!... Very much looking forward to enjoying your channel.... liked and subscribed... All the best to you!...

    • @JakeReedmusic
      @JakeReedmusic  Před 4 lety

      kjc9 trader hi! Thanks for subscribing and cool to hear about your kits and lessons with Peter! The Deagan is technically a xylo-rimba - it has graduated bars but not as wide as a proper marimba AND they are also thicker like a xylophone. Pretty crazy, right? It was designed to have elements of both instruments back in the 1910s ... pretty neat! I was only able to confirm all of this through Bob Becker via our mutual friend Bill Platt! Thanks so much for getting in touch - this is really cool!

    Hi Jake,- here´s a few suggestions with regards to various drum related content you could discuss on your YT channel:
    How about different kinds of tutorials,- I´m not thinking about playing tutorials,- plenty of those as it is,- but more in the way of illustrations of different kinds of genre specific drum setups, ways to record those setups, and their various tonal characteristics: Ie,- big bands, 70s folk, 60 psychedelia, 60s-70s funk, blues-rock, jazz trio, 80s gated compression ( think Phil Collins - In the Air Tonight), 80s stadium rock, classic rock/metal- Black Sabbath/ Deep Purple/LedZep, 80s wide open sound( Eric Singer- Black Sabbath - 7th. Star - one of the best drum sounds I´ve ever heard - open, alive, noisy and in you face), 80-90s tight sound: Savatage: Power Of The Night and Hall Of The Mountain King, Dio and also Pantera and Slipknot, modern day tight punchy sound for grandiose Euro-Metal ( if you don´t know much about this style I´ll fill you in as we go along as I did with Andrew), and also setups for acoustic outfits, recording differences and techniques for the different setups and styles: When to close mike, when to mike the kit instead of every single drum,- and maybe in collaboration with Andrew break downs of various drum libraries: Toontrack´s Superior Drummer/ Metal Foundry/Percussion and Ethnic Percussion just to name one manufacturor.
    Tons of possibilities to get your channel of the ground,- and I for one will be looking forward to every single upload.
    Like I did with Andrew I´m gonna leave you for now with a few treats of music from bands and in styles you´ve likely never heard of for you to acquaint yourself with, so here comes the first introduction:
    Operatic Symphonic Progressive Melodic Euro-Folk Metal.
    Biggest and most popular genre of rock music on the international scene,- been developing and going on for more than twenty-five years and though growing in popularity in the US and Canada virtually nobody outside of a devoted fan base in the northern regions of the Americas knows it even exits.
    A uniquely European style of rock/ metal based on roughly 800 years of folk music from something like 45 different countries and something like sixteen different cultural regions plus 400 years of classical music tradition and composition all of it fused with metal to become our version of contemporary highly melodic metal.
    Since all of this historic music is prevalent and all around us, we all grew up with folk and classical music and don´t have an "artsy" or " fancy high culture" feeling about it,- it´s simply our old music , as it is still being performed everywhere,- as well as is everything US made, - so what European musicians have done in order NOT to play and perform some watered down version of what is essentially US genres of music ( rap, country, RnB, roots americana, blues, AOR rock, Southern Rock etc. ) is look to our own roots to see what value we might bring to the table ourselves,- and this journey and development has led to a folk revival and several new metal genres all fused into one big outpour of music.
    If you don´t know these bands and this music you should,- if for nothing else then simply to know it´s out there.
    The reason I find this important to tell you people in the US about is because I´ve watched many a US YT channel discussing the total absense of rock music in the contemporary US radioland,- and people are complaining that rock music is dead,- well it´s not, especially not outside of the US and Canada,- but maybe the US scene has grown stale and a little set in its ways?
    My idea is that what worked for us could work for ya´ll,- so,- Bluegrass metal, anyone? Why not? :)
    An introductory playlist,- a bit of folk,- so you can hear where things came from,- and a bit of rock/metal so you can hear what they developed into:

    Hi Jake. Could you do a video on different drum stick sizes? I use Vic Firth American Classic 5A but would like to know what benefit the other sizes are and what different styles of drumming you would use them in. I've pretty much always been a 5A user but knowing what the differences are would make a good video. I just found this video from AM's Q&A. Cool tour by the way. Cheers.

      @JakeReedmusic  Před 4 lety +1

      Thanks! One of my friends builds studios here in LA. He did all of the acoustic treatment in this room. The two most important things he did were to put fabric along one entire wall and the other was he built a cloud to go over the drums. Definitely helps to control weird flutters/reflections in the room, which is really important for drums.

    Subbed you today,- looking forward to learning more about the drummer´s world in the studio from you.:)
    Am myself a Scandinavian metal musician ( vocals, guitar, bas, composing, recording etc.) heavily into a specific European style of music that I have been introducing Andrew and Ariana to lately,- so he (they) would know where I´m coming from when I comment on topics he´s discussing.
