  • Here’s the idea:
    We’re all pretty much stuck at home right now and recording drums is really fun, right?! So, I figured why not have some fun and create a play-along version of “Welcome Home”, from my new album "Reed Between the Lines", and see how other drummers would approach it? Except, it’s more than just a play-along ... take it one step further and record yourself/post a video of your performance. PLEASE, #REPLACEME
    Often in the studio world there’s a negative connotation associated with the idea of “getting replaced” on a song, but here it has a positive spin. It’s more about “how would YOU play on this song, if given the opportunity?” I invite you to use your creativity to come up with how you hear it. Please do absolutely whatever you’d like as far as sounds/vibe, groove/part, playing crazy fills, not playing crazy fills, lots of mics, minimal mics, lots of reverb, not lots of reverb … literally what evs, K? The main thing is to HAVE FUN! Here are the incredible musicians you’ll be playing with:
    Andrew Synowiec on guitar
    Kait Dunton on rhodes
    Cooper Appelt on bass
    me on perc (sorry can’t replace that lol)
    OK ... enough about that!
    ALSO, in this video, I discuss ways that I go about minimal mic'ing: 2 mics on the drums, 3 mics on the drums, and maybe ... just maybe 4 mics. I also discuss how I go about doing a quick mix in Pro Tools with said mic set-ups.
    So, there you go! Please, download the track and REPLACE ME using your favorite mic technique, minimal or maximal. Post your videos on the ol' insta, fb, the tic tok, whatever, and tag me. Be sure to use the hashtag #replaceme ... Have fun!!!

    Superb playing, engineering and mixing Jake. Would you be up for doing a video on all the acoustic treatment in your room? Listening to all the mics i can hear that the room is really well treated. Have you done any recordings without any treatment and if so were there any standing waves, flutter echoes etc?

    • @JakeReedmusic
      @JakeReedmusic  Před 3 lety +2

      Thank you! I think I’ve discussed the sound treatment here and there in some of my other videos but I could definitely do a video dedicated to it. The tricky part would be A/B-ing the room with and without the treatment, since everything is built into the room. When I moved in there was nothing on the walls, which produced so many flutters and weird sounds. The guy who treated it did a killer job on deadening the room as much as possible and cleaning up some of the low end build up. It’s not a big room to begin with so it’s better to treat it more like a drum booth. I have another space in the house with higher ceilings if I ever really need an open room sound, but it’s a real pain moving all the drums and mics, not to mention operating Pro Tools. Not to shamelessly plug my new album Reed Between the Lines, BUT, the first 5 songs were recorded in my “drum booth” and the last 5 were recording in my living room. I wanted more of a “live” sound for the jazz trio stuff so we did it all in the same room. Anyway, check it out and you can hear the difference a room makes! Thanks!

    • @JakeReedmusic
      @JakeReedmusic  Před 3 lety +2

      Thanks! It's just a folded up piece of cloth with a bunch of gaff tape haha! The trick is to find the sweet spot of how close to the edge of the drum you tape it down ... more toward the center = more muffled but less tone (and low end) ... too far toward the edge ... less muffled and more tone but perhaps too many overtones/unwanted ring. For me, it all depends on the context of the recording at hand. Sorry, that was long ... haha

    • @JakeReedmusic
      @JakeReedmusic  Před 3 lety

      I usually opt for all close mics but I bet if you put enough baffling around the kit to minimize room reflections and put an overhead mic as low as you can without hitting it, you could get some nice, tight, muffled tones.

    love your videos, especially this one and the 70s sounds one. Question: this snare sounds perfect to my ears, just wondering, is there really just one pc of tape on it? how high is that tuned and how do you get such little ring/snare buzz with such little dampening? (in the 70s vid your snare sounded wildly ringing and bad when you showed it unaffected) thanks!

    • @JakeReedmusic
      @JakeReedmusic  Před 3 lety +2

      I can't remember now but yeah, either one or two pieces of tape or a cloth near the edge of the drum. This Gretsch chrome over brass snare gets really dry really fast so it's easy to over dampen. it's not tuned super high in this video. just sort of medium. it's all about finding the balance of ring/muffling, tuning/tone, and snare tension!

    I'm not a drummer, but my style of recording drums is kinda vanilla. I do pretty much what you do except I have my stereo overheads in a spaced pair with the mono ribbon in the middle kind of making an equilateral triangle kinda thing with them all equidistant from the snare drum and don't have an over the shoulder mic or a crotch/dirt mic, mostly due to lack of inputs. My go to room mic is a stereo LDC (Vanguard V44s) in XY or Blumelein and that's about it. I don't do anything too special cause I don't have my own kit and usually just go and record my buddy's DW custom kit where I can't leave any of my mics up.

    • @JakeReedmusic
      @JakeReedmusic  Před 3 lety

      Thanks! I connect the Behringer p 16 to the Apollo via the 1/4" outputs on the Apollo ... that way it's all "analog" instead of using the ADAT jacks. You lose a couple of headphone channels but it works fine for what I do, which is mostly tracking drums, and every so often a small rhythm section.

    i’m using a sure sm57 on my snare and an AT2020 as an overhead and i’ve been finding my snare to sound really flat and dead when i record. I love the hollow sounding motown thing but i still need the snap. Any tips?

    • @JakeReedmusic
      @JakeReedmusic  Před 3 lety +3

      First thing I would say is to try to tune the snare as close to how you want it to sound and then experiment with the overhead mic placement. It depends on your room size/shape, but try it about 3 ft directly over the snare and see if you’re getting a similar tone to how it sounds to your ears in the room. Then see what it sounds like if you lower it a few inches. Then see what it sounds like if it’s a few inches above where you started. Try to find the clearest recorded representation of your drums with that one mic. Then, add in the snare mic. Try flipping the phase on the snare mic and see how that changes the sound. Try angling the snare mic more down into the drum and see how that sounds vs more parallel to the head. You mic have to use a little muffling on the snare if you’re going for the Motown thing. Good luck!

  • @marlonvicentini
    @marlonvicentini Před 3 lety +1

    Man, i have a question... these mic you were using on the toms, are they condensers? Doesn't it catch too much sound from the around? like, the cymbals, snare, kick, another tom? Actually i never saw anyone using condensers in toms... can you explain me, why is it "better" than dynamics mics for drums? or when is it better?

    • @JakeReedmusic
      @JakeReedmusic  Před 3 lety

      Good question! I wouldn't say they're "better" as much as just a different sound. I prefer the sound of condensers on toms b/c they sound clearer to my ears and pick up more of the subtleties in music that has a more dynamics. While they do pick up more ambient sounds, to my ears their off-axis response is more pleasing than dynamic mics like 421s - especially with cymbals. The other thing is most of the time mixers end up gating the toms anyway, so bleed isn't an issue. A lot of engineers here in LA use condensers on toms as much as you see 421s.
