Getting lighter wheels has been the best thing I got my car. When I fist got my car it had 25lb 17 inch rims and man did it feel sluggish and also it couldn’t maintain speed easy. I’ll let of the gas and right away the speedometer would start to drop. Now I have 14 inch rims weighing 12 lbs. I’ve seen a significant improvement in take off speed and the time it takes for the speedometer to drop when I let my foot off the gas making it better for fuel economy since my foot isn’t always pressing down to maintain speed. I would always encourage people to take the lightest wheels possible.
Also when I was shopping for wheels a lot of the manufactures who don’t list the weight on websites usually would tell me over the phone if you just ask about it.

    • @penttijakonen3817

The heavier wheels should maintain their speed for longer than light wheels actually... The problem with heavy wheels is changing the speed, maintaining the speed is not an issue. Also, what you "win" by taking your foot off the gas you lose when you accelerate again.

A better way to sell lighter rims for performance is by giving an example. Such as, depending on the rim that was on previously, lighter rims can drop 0-60 times by 0.1 of a second to sometimes even 0.5 of a second. On top of that, throttle response will be better at 1st and 2nd gear, most people's favorite gears to be in. Not to mention that an engine struggles more to spin 1lb of rotational mass than it does to move around 2lbs of static weight(depending on wheel size changes too), thus dropping 5lbs per rim, will feel like dropping 40lbs off the car.

I think it wheels weight matters more, since it's unsprung and it rotates (more inertia)
If you remove 10lbs of whell weight and put these 10lbs in the trunk, the car still weights the same in total, but performances will be better.
So saving 10lbs in wheels is not the same than saving them in car weight, it's better ^^

Just as important as lighter wheel weight for improved suspension dynamics and lower moment of inertia for improved angular acceleration of the wheel is lower tire weight. Using tires that have belts made of lightweight Aramid(Kevlar) fiber, instead of steel, will result in tires that are lighter and that are lighter in exactly the place where you most want mass removed, in the periphery of the tire where the reduction in the tire/wheel assembly's moment of inertia is greatest.
Replacing the Bridgestone Potenza S007 tires that were the Nissan OEM tires on my 370Z with Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires resulted in about a 6 lb reduction in tire weight. This was achieved in large measure by Michelin's use of this synthetic fiber in its belts on this tire. I currently have the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 (240) tires that are similarly lightweight.
I am also installing a set of forged magnesium monoblock wheels from Litespeed Racing, for a weight reduction of about 9 lbs per corner, over the OEM forged aluminum wheels. The 19 x 9 & 19 x10 wheels are weighing in at about 14 lbs. Future plans include the replacement of the one-piece steel brake rotors with two-piece aluminum hat ones that should shave an additional 5 to 10 lbs of weight off of each corner. I'm putting CNC machined billet 7075-T6 aluminum lug nuts on the car and will eventually replace the steel wheel studs with titanium ones.
