How to Install a Cable Railing | Ask This Old House
/ thisoldhouse - Jak na to + styl
I clicked on this video to see the cable install but I liked the pipe railings idea better! Cheaper, simple and easier to install. Thanks for sharing!
That railing looks sharp, like it.
this guy is a gun and has the best tools I've ever seen
Wouldn't it be easier to sand & stain the wood before you install the cables?
Yes, but Tommy and the crew can't wait around all day for everything to dry. :)
Yes, and it should be assembled, disassembled, stained/ painted and then reassembled. If you had all day and wanted to do it correctly that is.
Yes, and no. Things usually needs some adjustment or modifications during the install, which leads to a bunch of touchups after. You cant really win either way.
I pre-painted a bunch of trim and casing thinking I'd just touch up the nail holes after. By the time it was installed, caulked, and nail holes filled, there was enough that it had to be painted completely anyway. Waste of time and paint to do it beforehand.
also the cable support should have been silver steel color.
Bruh the homeowner needs to do somethin instead of letting Tom do all the freakin work!
Length of this video and finished product is GREAT
One of my favorite videos and we love our cable railings!!
Hi TOH , I love the cable railing look , it opens up the view a lot better ! 👍😊🔨🔩🔧
Looks beautiful. Thanks for sharing!
I want one! Great job and as always instructions. Thank you!
Home owner always had a confused look when he was explaining the next steps 😄😄
Yeah I saw this episode on TV, great work Tom, turned out beautiful 👍
I love how the cable railings look! I plan on putting one in this summer!
Nope, that’s what makes it an even better project and way better to look at when it’s done.
Wow that's an excellent job, i love to see these guys from this old hous
Just bought a tri level home in UT and i want this type of railing...so excited!
It looks awesome Tom! And you make it look so easy ; )
Audio drops out at 1:48 to 1:52
Makes me wonder if Tommy said something wrong there and they were gonna get a dub or something but forgot. =P
Tommy said 'Epstein didn't kill himself'
I like to think Tommy was cursing up a storm hahah
Very nice...always appreciate your videos!
Tom is the man👍
sound gap 1:48-1:52, Tommy must be cursing again :D
yeah, what is he saying there!?
Good old Tommy he came up in the trades all his nice polite stuff is just a "veneer" get it, a veneer?? 🤣 I'll be here all week!!!!
After getting an Oscillating Saw as a gift about a decade ago, I was surprised what a useful tool it is and how often I use it.
Please tell me the brand of yours or which you recommend.
@@lillelena7681 Definitely Festool www.amazon.com/Festool-400-Set-Oscillating-Accessories/dp/B00P93Q214 :)))

@@rpriesol Wow! Expensive!

Don't go falling in love with it, we'll be taking it with us when we leave here next month!- Cousin Eddie
that natural wood was so pretty, lets stain it black!
They were out of neon that day at the Home Depot.
looks amazing!
Way to flex on everyone with the Festool Domino. Tool costs more than this whole project haha.
Feels like a Festool advertisement.
Love the black. Modern as heck.
Beautiful job 👏🏻👏🏻
Good job Tommy as usual.
Wow....can't believe he painted it black...was not expecting that.....
Yep it looks dumb
The entire house at 0:08 is a bit of a mixed bag... Gingham chair contrasting with the trellis rug, the mahogany console table right next to the shiplap and industrial handrail, etc. Blame HGTV and DIY for creating the homeowner that thinks they're an interior designer. But at the end of the day, who cares...if they're happy with it, that's their business. They have to live with it.
I like modern contemporary I think it looks clean and neat, but they literally put wainscot there at the top of their stairs, old-style piano on the other side, shiplap siding and an industrial pipe rail across from it; it's completely surrounded by conflicting styles. =S
Honestly I thought that it looked really out of place at first. I personally thought that the black was a nice touch. To each their own. Definitely unexpected!
@@brockm4047 I would have done a dark gray of the same color as the pipe used as railing, that way both sides of the stairs would match.
Tommy finished and couldn’t wait to get out of there - headed straight for the door. Send me a picture!
I love you Tommy, you teach me so much
Absolutely beautiful.
Tommy’s a beast!!!
I enjoyed it very informative
Tune those cables like a guitar and play nothing else matters on it 😎🤘
We used a guitar tuner to get even tension between all the cables on our deck
Middle C? 🤣😂
Haha quite genius after you have an even tension and need that precise last fine adjustment 🤙
NERD ALERT! ha, actually a good idea but the exact tension is pointless!
and you openly admit to this , mmmmm
@@reedrobb AAAAAAACTUALLY *pushes up glasses* it is NOT pointless to fine tune your deck cables if you want to play them for company.
very nice result
I live in a one story house and don’t have any railing. I still watched the whole video.
*Same* LOL ♡♡♡
same here because you can always get ideas off other projects like, even though we both have one story houses with no steps leading to upstairs or down into a basement we can still have arm rails like on a front or back porch or any other design idea you can get of the video like the combination of using wainscoting and shiplap with metal...….
Tommy is the best!
Nice upgrade 👍
At first I didn’t like it but when it was painted black I changed my mind!
The was very clever how the spacing of the cables mimicked the clabbords behind it. Well done.
Did anyone else’s volume cut out at 1:50 ish when he mentions the poplar manufactured banister tube
Nice work as usual. You need to take a trip to our home and help with your professional knowledge and experiance!
Wonderful! May I have info where to get the all supplies? Thanks!
Love it 😍
Amazing
Very nice
Can we stain and sand before installing the cables?
Contemplated making mine vertical and decided against it. If the kids can't keep from climbing that is just tough. That is why I decided to use 1/8 th stainless. It won't stretch or break and just plain looks better.
Depends where you are but your supposed to have a lower kick off I think the first 8" to avoid having kids climb these. Usually the building codes are very strict concerning horizontal railing.
So where does one get that hollow stair pod that goes over existing one? I didn't see it at the major hardware stores. I really could use it.
Good ole Tom getting down and dirty.
Wainscoating into shiplap and the industrial handhold and railing is a bit odd.
everything is transitional nowadays. people just put up whatever crap they think looks nice and pull from all styles. the only consistency they want is that they like it.
The only way something becomes "traditional" is contractors copy a style/look and do it to 95% of homes they build. I would say these home owners just put their style in the design of the finish of their home. Well that is the best way to say they have crappy taste, I mean they made it custom. ;)
I'm just clowning about the crappy taste commit. If you pay hundred's of thousands of dollars to own a home for 10-60yrs then yeah maybe make it look the way you want. Just realize your custom distinct look may make it harder to sell or go down in potential value.
@@RossMalagarie People worry too much about home value. Make the house your own. 5-10% sale price doesn't work out to be that much on the overall cost of ownership. After all, some people are dumb enough to pay an agent 7% to sell their house.
This is the house that Pinterest built.
is there a lb per foot tension that is best and how can i measure that?
Awesome
Yaaa new videos!!
0:45
Look at that hand motion
A PVC railing will work too.
Sure wish they would have a link to the exact SWAGE hardware Tom used, link sends you to a cheap option that appears to be much tougher to install.
tom is the best
Did you crimping the wires in screw or did lock by itself
The beautiful wood hand railing is an eyesore and the piece of pipe handrail is what they're looking for. I wonder how much acid it takes to come up with that kind of an opinion
Hahaha, No kidding right ? SMH.
That handrail is somewhat ingenious though, not sure if it actually meets Code however.
Wood is timeless and lasts forever, but tastes change and people paint it every few decades.
Where did you get that great FEENEY turnbuckle wrench?
How were the cables secured to to the post attached to the wall?
Where can i buy this cable kit?
Is this the only ATOH video where they actually show the finished project? 😂
Yup !!
Pretty sure
Still has to be sanded, stained...
@@Bremend 9:44
can anyone tell
how cable attached inside the collar frame, why its not coming out
Where do you buy the newel post sleeve
Can you give me the link to the cable hardware you used
anyone have the actual link for the cable hardware?
How did you learn all this
Where do I buy the intermediate post
The second I saw that home my first thought was “UTAH!”
can someone point me to the fasteners used in this video? I clicked on the links in the description but they don't seem to go to the fasteners. The part that goes into the post.
Where can the newel cover be found? The amazon link doesn’t show the item in the video.
It would probably be easiest to pick what kind of wood you prefer and make your own. It appears to just be 4 wooden boards glued together that have 45 degree beveled edges. If you don't own a table saw most general contractors could probably build this pretty easily
It’s gonna suck to paint after it’s already fully installed...they did it though...
johnny feathers blue tape is your friend
Weird that US with loads of codes allows railing like that small kids can easily use those wires as steps and climb over.
Doesn't US code vary from stage to state? Who's to say they weren't in compliance with code in the state the work is happening in?
Harry are you allowed to breath without a permit
Who cares... It's their house, they can do what they want.
@@climberjb We have national and state adopted codes, but enforcement comes down to the local county/city/town/village/etc level. This often leads to massive difference in enforcement, even from one city to the next. In general, the bigger the city the more enforcement there is. The more rural areas have far less, often just having the fire marshal checks for any obvious dangers.
Always learn something 👍🚬☕🇵🇱
What Wood was used for the railing and the piece on the floor!
look's like poplar
I like the wires in theory, however the lines moving around in respect to the shiplap lines reminded too much of a wire cutter. High end glass panels might of looked nice if they were determed to add something modern to the style collection.
Don't understand why you notched the newl post, when you put the board on the bottom
That was a beautiful oak railing. It's a shame to pull it apart ... but the customer is always right!
For the poplar posts and cross rail, I would have stained it an d finished it before installing the cable hardware to save the masking required to keep the paint off of the steel.
Exactly…Murphy says you WILL drip stain onto the cables and/or the fittings.
These videos have become part Festool commercial. Tools that the average homeowner would never be able to justify the cost on.
1:48ish no audio?
I bet he disassembled the hardware and cabling. I understand where black shows the contrast, but I think I would have stained it a weathered gray and still give it that contrast to the rest of the room.
Hi there! Where are the pickets from? #AskTOH
The prison look is in style now 🤣
Who sells these pickets?
I just had to price the Festool equipment. Holy Cow !
Any Festool is superior to any other brand, especially their track saws
been building for over 40 years , and cant figure out why these meet code , they clearly pose a climbing hazard, any member horizontal and with in 8 inch to floor,if someone steps on and climbs one or more then now you dont have proper guard rail height, anyone else got anything on this
Was thinking along those lines too. Fine homebuilding magazine recently did an article about how codes are misinterpreted and easily mistaken one way or another especially from state to state, mostly because a lot of the codes are not written very clearly.
Wouldn't it have easier to sand and stain it before they put it together?
yes
Nop...
Did I miss something or did they not fasten the opposite post?
I'm sure it was done; they just didn't show it, like him trying to paint around the cables instead of doing that first.
The wood is more appropriate for that style of house.
Is there a similar product suitable for
Outdoors? Say on a deck?
Yes, exterior ones are available.
@@augustreil where? Stores like Home Depot ?
@@lillelena7681, They might, but I have seen exterior ones done, not sure where they purchased their materials though. I do know, as you, that all the cables and connectors would have to be made out of Stainless. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
Feeney is the brand. It's the same stuff they used here. Just look for where feeney is sold.
9:25 I thought he was going to do a little bass solo.
6:41. You’re welcome.
Pretty sure he didn’t needed lying on the floor but .. dedication, you have to show off
The dude wants to laugh 😂
1:47 awkward silence
Check your building code. Railings that can be climbed are illegal in some jurisdictions.
