Tools List for How to Install a Cable Deck Railing:
Cordless drill [amzn.to/2Ocgh5C]
1/4-inch-diameter carbide-tipped masonry drill bit [amzn.to/2M1xcp1], used to bore holes in brick wall
Three 1/4-inch-diameter twist drill bits [amzn.to/2O9JZs7], one for drilling the template, two for holding the template in place

Adjustable wrench [amzn.to/2QfK6Vv], for tightening the anchors
Nut driver [amzn.to/32PMzaK], used to tighten the machine screws
Steps for How to Install a Cable Deck Railing:
1. Make a hole-drilling template by drilling 1/4-inch-diameter holes spaced 3 inches apart through a 4-inch-wide by 3/4-inch-thick strip of plywood.
2. Hold the template against the brick wall, directly under the deck's handrail.
3. Use a 1/4-inch-diameter carbide-tipped masonry bit to bore through the top hole in the template and into the brick house wall.4. Push a spare 1/4-inch-diameter drill bit into the hole to hold the template in place.
5. Next, drill a 1/4-inch-diameter hole through the template's bottom hole, and then insert another drill bit.
6. Drill the remaining holes through the template and into the brick wall.
7. Clamp the template to a deck-railing post and drill 1/4-inch-diameter holes through the post. Repeat to drill holes in the remaining railing posts.
8. Use a hammer to tap a wedge-type sleeve anchor into each hole in the brick wall.
9. Place a washer and nut onto the threaded end of each sleeve anchor, then tighten the nuts with a wrench.
10. Hand-tighten a cable-end connector onto the threaded end of each sleeve anchor.
11. On the far railing post at the end of the deck, insert a machine screw through each 1/4-inch-diameter hole.
12. Apply a little liquid thread lock to the end of each bolt, then thread on a cable-end connector.
13. Once the connector bottoms out, back it out four turns. Repeat for the remaining cable-end connectors.
14. Push the end of the cable into one of the connectors at the brick wall. The connector will automatically lock onto the cable.
15. Pass the opposite end of the cable through the holes in the intermediate railing posts.
16. At the end post, use cable cutters to cut the cable to the proper length.
17. Press the end of the cable into the connector on the end post. Repeat to install the remaining cables along the railing.
18. Use a nut driver to tighten the machine screws to tension the cables.
Tom installed the Cable-Rail system, manufactured by Feeney Architectural Products [www.feeneyinc.com/CableRail#].

Thank you Tom Silva! I was not understanding how this was done until your video!
I bet Carrie really enjoyed that good railing Tom gave her.
Sleeping Ugly this comment deserves more
Jesus Christ

people like you really ruin this country honestly.
@Arfdog-Calm down snowflake.
Tommy nailed it again. What a man lol
I love this man
Awesome video thanks for sharing. Stay well and safe.
Excellent video.....thanks
Tom is super casual with his shorts and loafers, lol.
And mustache...
It's like he was on vacation and they called and asked him to do a job
how about that measuring tape on his belt :DD
How about Carrie's striped shirt which really accentuates her fun bags :D
the clamp is a good idea
Very nyc work
This does a good job with the basics of the systems. Most are generally the same with slight hardware innovations. What is important to note that wasn't mentioned was that there is a tightening sequence that you must follow. It starts in the middle and works its way up and down. Check with the manufacturer of your system to see what they recomend.
I agree - great video but glossed over the tensioning step.
I was thinking the same thing as Jamie. The tensioning step is really important. Silva obviously really knows his stuff, but it would have been good to see that final step in the video.
I love these cables, they are used by many countries to safely slow down a vehicle to stop it from moving into oncoming traffic, the way it works is that it not only uses the tensile strength of the cable, but also the leverage points of the pillars to slow down, stop and even pull back on the car.
With this, it is safe for around a toddler, they can run and trip into it, their head gets caught but they won't fall through it, they will be hurt but won't have the sudden shock of a wooden plank or even a pole in their head - downside is that they can use it as a ladder, so be sure to ruin it with a sheet of perspex up the top so they don't climb over it!
I enjoyed it
I wish I could give this video 100 thumbs up
Hi matttylerrrr have you become a flat earther yet? If not I suggest watch a 13 part series called _What on earth happened_ by Ewaranon to learn that the earth is not a globe. I got it in my about tab.
Great template for beginner. It is important to drill on the right position to make the railing orderly. We have installed lots of cable railing too, happy to discuss if you guys have any questions
Steve Peters1 day agoI need the 1/4" female to 1/8" swage cable connector - Where can I purchase these fittings? Please advise at redmtnprop@gmail.com
where can I buy the quick connect ends? That thing makes the whole process insanely easily instead of needing to crimp
id you ever find one way clamps?
That looks really good I wonder why there wasnt another piece of black wood against the brick
No reason I think. It would have been a simpler construction using lag screws and in my opinion look better (when you see it fully at 5.20+) and balance the other side visually but he chose this way. I suppose , his choice
2:05 well she’s not winning any Oscars. Lol
Hi Micah have you become a flat earther yet? If not I suggest watch a 13 part series called _What on earth happened_ by Ewaranon to learn that the earth is not a globe. I got it in my about tab.
Why did they skip the tensioning? I was so excited to see those cables getting tensioned
Interesting ideas, but as always, check with your local building code. Some areas do not permit horizontal members in a railing other than the cap, in a residential setting. The theory being that children could climb on them.
3 posts 8 feet total with hardware ran me $1030
what is the brand name of the cable fittings/ tensioners?
Looks good but I would have had a wood trim piece against the brick to tie in better aesthetically with the darker fence.
5:32, that laugh, oh my.
Hey, It's legal.
Heh heh heh, I can't roll people off my deck to their "accidental" death anymore, heh heh.
If I use this cable rail for a trellis between 3, 8’ high 4x4, 8’ apart should I be concerned that the posts will warp based on the cable tension?
not if installed correctly, use high grade 4x4 to start. On the ends use a single piece metal plate so as to distribute pull weight evenly
My works too. Used Inplix handbooks and build it with no problemas.
where does he get all the specialty hardware. Does lowes and HD carry this stuff?
hi you could buy them all here , muzata, top seller of cable railing on amazon. www.amazon.com/stores/page/DA11B4C9-665B-41F0-9D1E-2B57E6DFF98A?channel=ytds_cr
What is the name of the fasteners you used. Thank you rex
Guess he didn't feel it was necessary to inform how to tension the cables-the reason the fancy hardware was used in the first place. Also, he chose to assume everyone had a wall at one end of the cable, rather than another free standing post. Then almost everyone has a cable cutter, right? Finally, kudos for keeping his focus with such an alluring assistant.
Hi can you please tell us where can we buy this lag terminals from,

may i ask the manufacture of the cable terminals ? both ends?
Where can I get those cable-end connectors?
Can anyone tell me what the connectors are specifically called, and where you can purchase them?
David Braatz
there called lag terminals
David Braatz my wife works for a stair company here in Ohio and they have the cable rail system. Go to a lumber yard or a box store like Lowe's or Menards and ask for LJ Smith products.

Swageless tensioners
Harbor freight drill bits?
Where do you purchase the quick connect fasteners?
Did you ever find one-way clamps??
I found some clamps on Amazon
Time for a new bit
nice work homeowner was beautiful
can you tell me where i can buy the sleeve anchor and connectors
home depot or any hard ware store, you can also look online
As usual good info but a little slim on the information on how to adjust the tension.
As a contractor i like the system but the fittings are much to expensive.
Agreed. The 'swageless tensioners' (quick connects) are very expensive compared to the hydraulic swage type. I just bought/invested in a hydraulic hand crimper and used the regular types. Much cheaper and I have the tool for future projects. BTW the fittings are where the cost is the cable is pretty cheap so its worth thinking out designs to use cheapest components.
What size anchor do you need for a 1/8" cable?
Doesn’t matter it just needs to fit the cable fastener threads
Each one of those pieces of hardware is 25 to 50 dollars EACH! YES EACH!!!!
Pay to play big guy
Does anyone know if the posts are wood or steel? Having a deck being installed, with posts being 4" x 4" Southern Pine. Deck floor is 15 feet above grade, so it's a deck on the 2nd floor of the house.
Do you have an update on your project, we are at the point of doing the railings on our elevated deck
where do we buy the cable system
anyone know where I get the quick connect pieces?
It's Moooodernnn, it's simmmmmmmmmmple, it completes my duck.
How do you tighten the cable down the road when it starts to sag?
It won't sag. The cable won't unless you put a ton of weight on it(Literally a ton).
If there is any dips/sags it means the connections have come loose, i.e. out of the wall, or the end board the connection digs it's way through the board(I think they are using metal boards here).
If that happens you'd need to fix either side, the cable itself won't sag and if that is a metal end board, it shouldn't dig through either, so only failure point would likely be the brick fasteners. Use larger hold if anchor comes out, anchor a bit larger, and make new connection basically.
This isn't like fencing wire, cable like this doesn't really sag.
Good point. Based on their clothing it is likely the hottest time of year and the cables will only get tighter as it cools down. Otherwise replacement will be necessary if it came loose for a mechanical reason.
Where to order the cable railing kit and Sleeve anchors??
Look at a hardware store, or search online
hello what is the name of the railing fixture? or which company makes it?
www.decksdirect.com/cablerail-kit-by-feeney.html
Where can I purchased the lag terminals?
any hardware store, or you can look online
What were those stiles made of? It seemed like the drill bit had a hell of a time trying to get through. So were they made out of some kind of composite material or was the bit dull?
Both
steel posts
4 inch channel steel
Do the wall end anchors ever come loose? They rope is clamped in but then it is only screwed on to the anchor, so I'm curious if it will ever come loose?
What size cable did they use.
Anyone know what a taught cable is ? I've heard of a tight cable but never a taught and he always says ideaer like Paul sr on occ
denny strate taught is when a rope or cable is tight. It means “no slack”
anyone know what brand this is?
I wish I could see how the posts are connected to the deck at the bottom, to get an idea of how sturdy it is. And also how are they connected to the top of the railing? Does anyone know what kind of composite posts those are?
This is why these handy man take your wife while you are out working...
What do you folks like better - this modern look or a normal wood railing?
Depends on the surroundings
if it's more "urban" the modern looks better. But if your in a more residential suburbs the wood looks better imo
Ill tap it
I would like to push my cable in until it bottoms out.
hahahaha!!
🤣
I would drill
What does a system like this run per 6 foot run? Labor? Materials ??
Brooke Witham - Surprisingly cheap. Cheaper than if he did the matching composite decking material as banisters.
I'm sure it would take a little over an hour, you can get great rates of $60 per hour plus materials and still quite a nice job out of it while still inspection friendly
Brooke Witham
It completes her “dock.”
How many Times did he say drill?
That would have looked 1000x better if they put a matching green post against the brick instead of leaving nothing there.
What, Tom could not allow Carrie to do some of the work?
You edited out the entire part where he tightens the cables
WHERE CAN I BUY THESE CONNECTORS?
Did you ever find these particular connectors? I can't find them anywhere!

where can I buy this exact cable and connectors from?
Hi did you have any luck finding these products
The store
if you need to ask this, hire a proffesional
How much railing hite..
Drilling in metal without cooling your drill bit.
Big mistake because now that blue drillbit is losing a lot of its strength and therefore getting dull very fast.
Use some water or buy some coolant to cool that drill bit back down.
He didn't drill into anything metal in this video. The wall is brick and those posts are some kind of plastic.
the posts are steel or aluminum, not plastic
drill bits are cheap, his time is worth more than a quarter inch drill bit.
"Masonary bit" lol
I caught that too.
Hi modest have you become a flat earther yet? If not I suggest watch a 13 part series called _What on earth happened_ by Ewaranon to learn that the earth is not a globe. I got it in my about tab.
what is the diameter of the wire rope ?
1/8 inch
smaller than a 1/4"
There are several diamter, 1/8 inch is the most popular one.
Here is the link to the exact connectors used in the video from a brand called QuickConnect. Great connectors but expensive, $32 a piece. If any alternatives please comment www.cableraildirect.com/category-s/1818.htm
4 years later…any luck with alternatives?
@@fusnowtiger yes we used an alternative product that were not as easy to install and well designed but we met our goal of a beautiful looking cable railing patio. Wish I could post pictures. We sold that house in 2019 and the patio was one of the selling features
less than $1 apiece now
@@JayzeVo17 i just saw $28/piece. Where you shopping?

Hi danwaters have you become a flat earther yet? If not I suggest watch a 13 part series called _What on earth happened_ by Ewaranon to learn that the earth is not a globe. I got it in my about tab.
The quick connect swage connectors are actually called 'swageless' and are about $10 for 1 set. No thanks, I will go a less expensive way. $70 for a set of 20 clampable swage connectors instead of $200 for the ones in this video.
If you need economical cable railing kits , go for muzata. Various styles with high quality and low prices.
I can get a 16ft Hog Panel for about $30
That whole row of wall anchors seems like a good way to split your wall :-) They use the same technique but less anchors to split natural stones.
Natural stones are one solid piece. You are saying one small hole in each brick is going to make the entire wall split? The force being applied to a brick is not transferred to each brick!
Are those plastic posts?
why did he leave those nuts in those anchors? :D
The girl has a great body thumbs up

It's weird to hear him say/pronounce masonary when it's actually masonry. Maybe it's a commonly accepted tomato/tomAHto thing? Idk
3 more and you'll have a ring.

There is only one “a” in the word “masonry “
If a comedian does a skit at a Masonic lodge, is it a... /masonary/ bit?
What?! He's not using festool? Lol
HAAAA i just watched this video for the first time and I was like "Wait SAY WHAT!!??? NO FESTOOL SPONSER THIS TIME? LOL" They must not be ready for that much power
He’s Tom Silva. Took manufacturers ask his permission…
I thought you couldn't do horizontal railings like that to prevent children from climbing over.
Depending on local building code. Our building code here (BC, Canada) was just relaxed on this specific area in 2018 after they realized that it was relatively unrealistic that climbing would happen. So as long as the maximum spread between cables doesn’t exceed 100mm (4 inches) you are good to go.
Masonary is not a word! It's masonry!
WTFitness Channel Thank you!
she kind of resembles edie falco
This lady doesn't like slumming it w tommy
4:53 - 4:59
It'll look great till people use it for a footrest while leaning on the railing and stretch out all the cables...
or kids try to climb up it. But hopefully hes left enough thread spare at the post end to tighten up over the years
@4:34, he's going to hold the cable "tot"? Please tell me he's not trying to say "tight"...
It's actually spelled "taut" and Tom uses the word correctly, which simply means pulled or stretched tightly ;)

Great job giving her savety glasses, but wearing regular ones yourself.
For Canadians, these railing are illegal.
Really? How do you know this? I wanted to use this on my deck in Toronto.
Section 9.8.8.6, the only time horizontal railing are acceptable is when there is no more than 15mm between each element! For vertical design it’s maximum 100mm or about 4inch. It’s all about child safety.
