  • Thanks to a couple of my sharpening customers, I have the pleasure of being able to fondle and compare three examples of one of Benchmade's most sought after new knives of 2-1, the 940-1 Osborne. Let's take a look at it, side by side with the old standby, the regular production 940...

    And listen up guys; Robs sharpening services are the best you'll ever see, even if you had the same equipment as Rob you'd hard pressed to duplicate his work. You have to know what you're doing, and Rob really does. I've sent all my nicer knives to Rob for sharpening and they've all come back beyond perfect and horrifyingly sharp. But don't worry, they are so sharp that you won't even feel the cut and the wound is so clean that it always heals up perfectly! Thanks again Rob for the great work. I'm just sorry that I ran out of good knives to send!

    Hey guys, my 940 is the bottom one on screen, and yes I put on the deep carry pocket clip, I also agree with rob that the split arrow clip is awesome, my job requires a shirt and tie, and a visible pocket clip isn't really appropriate. What I love about the deep carry clips is that they make PERFECT money clips! I'm not a cash-in-wallet kinda guy. That's why the Emissary and now the 940-1 are perfect knives for "in the pocket carry".

    Excellent review and observations. I was really contemplating if I should pick one up for $263.50, but was not quite sure if it's worth the money. This video summed it up very well and helped me in making my final decision, not to. I already have a 940Ti with S30V & all titanium handle, and everything is just perfect on that knife. It'll be very hard to beat my 940Ti in fit & finish, so I'll just stick with mine.

      I ordered a deep pocked clip from Blade4Sell that was marketed as a benchmade factory part. It took 3 months to get to me (they said it had to be manufactured) and It makes the knife almost 2mm wider than the factory clip. Plus it's painted and not oxidized or parkerized. So I sent an email to benchmade asking about factory options expecting (and fully willing) to pay and they're sending me THREE different options. Holy customer service batman!

    i have a question and feel that i can get some good advice here. i am getting a benchmade 940, and i am debating on whether to get the standard one or the s90v carbon fiber version. id like to get that version, just because its awesome, but here is where i need advice to make my decision: i have honestly gotten to the point where i just dont bother with the fancy sharpening systems to get hair-whittling edges anymore, nowadays i just use my little lansky turnbox sharpener and im totally satisfied with the reasonable edge it keeps with regular touch ups. i know that i can sharpen s30v with it as it always kept a decent edge on my paramility 2(RIP), but would it be unreasonable to be trying to keep the s90v version sharp with the lansky turnbox? the cost difference isnt an issue, and the coolness, while tempting, isnt really importamnt enough to me to sway my decision. it all comes down to the ease of sharpening for me. any and all advice would be so greatly appreciated. thanks in advance guys! :)

    • @KingdomOfDimensions
      @KingdomOfDimensions Před 7 lety

      Just buy a strop and some green compound. Barely takes a minute or two to touch up a blade, and barring any significant edge damage that's all that will be necessary. I saved myself some money and made a strop out of a belt I found cheap, but even buying everything shouldn't cost more than $30-$40.
      As for the knife, I'd say if you abuse your knives at all the S90V might be an issue, since it's even more chippy than S30V, which is slightly on the chippier side. So if you do get a strop, might be best to stick with something less prone to edge damage. That being said, have you checked out the Knifeworks exclusive 940? A bit flashy, but the blade steel (20CV) is like a slightly harder but easier to maintain S30V.

    Btw rob, I've always had my suspicions about the original 940's Ti back spacer. In my experience anodized Ti doesn't hold up that great. It fades and gets dark from oils and fingerprints etc. But the 940 spacer seems to stay really bright much like (dare I say) anodized aluminum?

    • @TheApostleP
      @TheApostleP  Před 10 lety

    How did the carbon feel vs the metal handle? Did it feel cheap? lite? I have a griptilian that I really like, but to me the handle feels a bit cheap/plasticy.. I also have a 707 Sequel with metal and carbon inserts, the metal feels great. What do you think on the 940 metal vs 940-1 carbon? And did you ever measure the handle thickness? The metal did look thinner.

    • @TheApostleP
      @TheApostleP  Před 9 lety

      Jonathan Kelly Unless you knew CF was an expensive material, it would feel cheaper because it's so light. The handle is about 3/32 thinner on the 940-1, which is why the liner screws protrude into the cavity. I prefer the original.

  • @SuperSecretSquirell
    @SuperSecretSquirell Před 10 lety

    When did they change the blade to S90V and how does it compare to 154CM? The 2 940's I have are 154CM. Any why did they drop the black scales? My first 940 was a black scaled one and I kinda prefer the black. Been wanting to pick up another one up and I think I want the CF model. Just can't decide if I want a combo blade or the plain edge model.

    • @TheApostleP
      @TheApostleP  Před 10 lety

      Black aluminum 940's were pretty early, and very few, although the black handles are still standard on the 943 clip point model. 154CM was replaced by S30V in the 940 series around 2007, and the 940-1 is the only model which features S90V.

    • @SuperSecretSquirell
      @SuperSecretSquirell Před 10 lety +1

      Interesting. My 1st (the black one) was purchased around 04-05 and the green was around 08-09 (but it still has 154CM, interesting). I got the green handled one as I couldn't find any black ones. I guess one could buy the 943 and a 940 blade and swap them around. Considering the discount I get from BM, that might not be a bad idea. They have to be the best pocket knife I have ever owned and I can easily keep them stupid sharp.

    I'm lucky that I was able to get a nice one from KSF (decent centering, even grinds, etc). I got the centering down after taking it apart, flipping one of the washers, and polishing the washers with black and then white BRK compound; I also took the blade tang over the compound but I am not sure this was necessary. It kind of sucks that you have to jump through these hoops to get it feeling really nice. It's a great EDC knife: small, light, and efficient. Plus, it doesn't make up my phone screen like titanium scales have a tendency to do.

    I actually bit the bullet on one of these guys. I had to pause the video mid way through to run to the safe and double check my centering. Looking good, but same plunge grind.
    I too noticed the screws sticking through, while it doesn't cause interference, I do agree they shouldn't protrude.
    All in all I am loving my first 940, and have a little extra pride in ownership having snagged a first production run. Maybe down the road Benchmade will off screws that fit right.
    I would love hear you thoughts and see the results of your plunge grind and sharpening of the knife when you are done working on them.

      +zleggitt1989 Search "plunge grinds" on my channel page. I have a video up that illustrates the problem this defect causes over the first inch or so of cutting edge when resharpening. It's really not nit-picking.

      @zleggitt1989 Před 9 lety

      +TheApostleP i watched the video and you really didnt explain why it was important. the only thing i got out of it was for resharpening... am i missing something? im not trying at all to troll or undermine your intelligence in any way shape or form, im just trying to learn is all. ive personally never found a plunge grind to be obnoxious to work around so im just confused is to why its a big deal. again im not trying to offend you or troll you id just like a little more information is all on your views. keep up the good work i love your channel

    • @TheApostleP
      @TheApostleP  Před 9 lety

      zleggitt1989 Well, I suppose if you never planned to sharpen your knife, or if a sharp edge isn't important to you, especially in the rear section, then it really doesn't matter at all. But most of us like a knife that can be resharpened, especially since most factory edges pretty much suck. So, a blade designed and ground in such a manner that resharpening can be done properly is more desirable than one that cannot. Make sense?

    • @zleggitt1989
      @zleggitt1989 Před 9 lety

      +TheApostleP im not the absolute best knife sharpener by any means but my edges are good enough to shave with. i guess ive just never had a problem with plunge grinds thats why i was asking why it was important or if there was another reason why you were critical of them. you didnt have to be condescending. im sorry i wasted your time

    • @TheApostleP
      @TheApostleP  Před 9 lety

      I really didn't mean to condescend. But what a poorly executed plunge does to a cutting edge is pretty obvious when the time comes to resharpen, especially in the first 1/2-1" of edge. I'll bet if you go back and look at some of the knives you've sharpened, and focus on this area of the blade, you'll see that they aren't a sharp and consistent in that area as the rest of the edge. Let me know what you find.

  • @BobioRules

    I recently picked up an older generation of the 940 with 230V at a gun show for $50.00 (insane deal), however, there is some blade play in it that I can't get rid of unless I tighten it to the point of not being able to close it with two hands. Would benchmades life sharp (or any other services) fix that you think? Also awesome video, can't wait to spend more money I don't have on one of these beauties.

      If you haven't found out yet, but according to benchmade you have to be the original owner (and register your knife) to use their lifesharp program. Sorry but either way its a sweet deal. Try to add or remove a washer or two to see if that helps.

    Sure are pretty knives.
    When these were first announced at SHOT I thought to myself, "Well, looks like I am gonna be selling my regular 940 and getting one of these." But now that they are out... IDK. My regular 940 was not a perfect knife when I got it... took a trip to TheApostleP's spa treatment service to get it "right" and now that it is I don't see getting rid of it just to start the process all over again. Maybe I'll do like Rob says and pick one up used after a while.
    Still... sure are pretty knives. :)

      Thank for the kind words, my friend. I think the only issue I pointed out that really has a chance to be corrected is the length of the liner screws. The centering / grind issues are pretty standard 940 conditions, and just take a bit of tweaking on most knives. But those screws sticking into the cavity are pretty unsightly.

    • @555Gear
      @555Gear Před 10 lety

    • @TheApostleP
      @TheApostleP  Před 10 lety +1

      Nope. This one looks to be a pretty bad hardware buy by somebody. The scales are ever so slightly thicker than the aluminum, which probably requires a longer screw. But the next "off the shelf" size was obviously too long :(

    Thanks for being one of the first to throw up a great video on this new edition of the 940. Would you consider posting a short follow-up on your experience with sharpening the S90V? I understand from others experiences that it can be a bit of a chore to sharpen/re-profile. Thanks!

    • @TheApostleP
      @TheApostleP  Před 10 lety +1

      Yes, I will, Joshua. I would say the reports you've heard are pretty accurate. I didn't have much trouble removing material with the lower grits, but S90V definitely doesn't like to take a good polish, especially on the secondary bevel (the one you see). It did come to a super keen cutting edge when I applied the micro bevel, but it doesn't like to take the most cosmetically appealing polished edge. As a sharpener / user, I much prefer S30/35, CTS XHP, D2 and ZDP 189. I'd put S90V in the same category as Elmax, with unnecessarily low grindability/sharpenability without edge retention significantly better than the steels I just mentioned. Even if cost were equal, I'd opt for any of those 4 over S90V or Elmax. Just to put it in perspective, 15 years ago ceramic knife blades were going to make steel obsolete. Then people dropped them and they broke in half. Then they chipped and got dull and nobody could sharpen them... and ceramic blades became a laughing stock in serious knife discussions. Now we're chasing the same ridiculous standard of edge retention in modern steel recipes, and it's beginning to get a bit ridiclous... again.

    • @TheApostleP
      @TheApostleP  Před 10 lety

      Point taken. However, to put it simply, which is about as good as it gets for me, if S35 is awesome times 5, and just plain awesome will do given relative ease of sharpening, then why do I need awesome times 10 if it makes sharpening a nightmare?

    • @TheApostleP
      @TheApostleP  Před 7 lety +6

      MetroSkyscraper Fully serrated blades have their place, certainly, but a short run of serrations are always too short, and plain edge from belly to tip is too short and in the wrong place. The combo edge is the spork of the knife world -- a spoon that leaks and a fork with tines that are too short to do anything with. Trust me.
