Not a clone if it has the Benchmade logo. It is a COUNTERFEIT.
I agree. Not a clone, it's a counterfeit.
Matthew Humphrey
even the real one is a cnc machine clone !
Matthew Humphrey
I dont like logos on either .
But It would be better if they didnt have the markings on the clone
Matthew Humphrey the real ones are the counterfeits i got a crooked river large ( $178.00 ) crap in the box . Dont by benchmade through the mail !! Their quality control bows goats I have proof !!
I agree. And this chump is providing free advertising.
Benchmade should just make a cheaper version line of knives just like spyderco does with byrd line
What's funny is on this cheaper clone, they still took the time to make sure that the screws didn't protrude into the blade path. The real 940-1 still has screws that protrude into the blade path.
+ctuan13 the screws protrude on this one too.
Jon M but not nearly as much
My green one is legit
I'm not above buying a Chinese made copy, usually from Ganzo, Navy, Brother, etc., of a US made knife. These companies don't pretend their copies are the real thing, the price and materials should alert you, and they use their on branding. The BM 940 "Clone" you show is an out and out counterfeit. I venture to say that many of this type of counterfeit knife will find its way into the secondary market to be sold as the genuine article.
I agree with your statements. The point where they are using another maker's mark is the point where they cross the line. I might consider buying an unmarked or off-branded clone of the 940-1 considering how fiendishly overpriced the original is. But as soon as it has the Benchmade markings it's bad mojo.
Ronnie Durbin Yes these counterfeits do go on to the secondary market sometimes. Sometimes the seller thinks they're genuine. And sometimes it's worse...some do know they're counterfeit.
Ronnie Durbin You would be hard-pressed to try and find a better Knife than brothers they make a beautiful Knife, and as far as a Flick flick flick kind of knife you be hard-pressed to be to gonzo it’s also a beautiful night for the price, same with rough rider Chinese knives came along way brother
@@jojojeep1 Agreed. My next Brother will be the 1508.
Ronnie Durbin Ivory Collard beautiful Knife
In the UK on Heinnie (one of our main places to go for knives) they are £310 for the 940-1. The copy is £45 on Aliexpress. We get bent over and shafted on the price of knives in the UK making it even more likely for us to buy the clone. I am happy with the clone and extra £265 in my pocket.
Bought a 940 1 of them yesterday £268
@13:30 The logo on the counterfeit knife isn't aligned correctly with the blade. It is rotated counter-clockwise about 3 degrees from being parallel to the top edge of the blade. The distance from the tip of each wing of the butterfly to the top of the blade should be identical.
$30 is as much as I'll pay for a clone. I enjoy my 940 clone. The fit and finish is outstanding vs an original bitchmade.
Very thorough video. You know your knives.. I bought the 940 Osborne and after having it stolen years later I bought a knockoff in wish and I was so impressed I bought a second one. It doesn't beat the real one but it's damn close. Tbh. Mine actually says d2 on it but the real one was sv70 everything in this video is accurate description.
The steel on the AliExpress 940 clones is mostly 440C. I've scanned al 3 of the 940 clones is own with a XRF scanner (Niton XL2 X-ray fluorescent scanner) and got a consistent 440C or 440B. I tested the hardness at 56 to 57 HRC
Could be, this video was made a while ago too. It sharpens somewhat similar to D2.
The 940 clone or "counterfeit" is unbelievably spot on similar. This must be Chinese quality craftsmanship from VESPA. Some guy tried to sell me this exact clone at a fleamarket today. He didn't know I knew what it really was. Good upload!
Awesome review, mine is still on the way, can't wait for it to arrive!
Thanks for the link to the blog, I appreciate it!
Best wishes!
+ATech Reviews feel free to link to my video too on your site.
I have the same one on order from AliExpress too. Same reasons. I would have bought a real one if the prices were more reasonable. Even on used and banged up, the prices are out of my league. I’d buy a decent real one, used for a hundred if I could find one. But I cant.
Psh. I've sold two for a hundred bucks or less that were mint. You didn't look too hard, did you
Probably other clones, mate.
I have the 940-1 clone. It's pretty damn awesome for $70. The standoffs aren't as bright blue and the butterfly image on the blade are off. But other than that it's still super impressive
I have both knives. Both work perfectly. I personally prefer Chinese one because of opening sound.
The manufacturer told me that the steel is 9Cr13MoV
It's very possible things may have changed. Mine has stayed fairly sharp
A lot of knives are made with 9Cr13MoV. It's not that bad.
It's a higher grade Chinese steel.
I have a real problem with clones or counterfeits. The companies who makes these knives need to be put in jail. For one, it is stealing from Benchmade. The second reason is what if a person is new to collecting and does not know much about knives in general and buys 1 thinking it is the real deal only to be sold a clone or counterfeit. I would be pissed off big time. Personally, I only buy knive from a reputable retailer or if I am buying used I will only buy from a friend. I work hard for my money and do not need or want to be screwed. Jon, with you buying clones or counterfeits you are buying into the illegal trade.
The benchmade 940-1601 which has D2 steel costs $250
Wow, I have genuine 2x 940-1 + 1x 940's, and this looks on point !
Can't justify >$60 on a fake though, especially with mystery steel. It's clearly not s90v.
Not sure its genuine s30v but in performance its same like genuine. May be its S30v or some one mention D2 steel . Whatever its same feel & performance for third of price. Now time will tell how much it last
The benchmark text is partially covered up on this clone when the knife is closed. That was the first thing I noticed and the first give-away that it’s a clone.
That clone blows the the real one!
Benchmade now has that deep carry pocket clip available in a parkerized finish, as of the end of 2017.
I own a 940-2 wonder if i can buy this and slap on those carbon fiber scales...hmm...
john rawr probably..thats a good idea
@@Biblicalgiants i was wondering the same thing, let me know how it works out, just dont send it in to Benchmade for service lol
I know all the screws are a size smaller on the clone.
I know it's an older video, hoping someone sees this. Where should I look to find good used options especially for Benchmade?
I bought original for 260 from Basspro last year and last month bought this clone. I can say clone looks better finish, blade last same like original . Looks like it comes out from same factory from where benchmade buy its stuff.
the screws stick out on the inside of the real benchmade as well
Actually, Benchmade's in house quality notable sagged for quite awhile... the clones might have or probably surpassed the build and expectations of the so-called real deal.
Great review. I've been wishing for a review of this clone. I saw it on the China knife news website and have been waiting to pull the trigger. Hope mine comes in looking as good as yours.
I've bought the real one and later got a knockoff on wish. It was so good I bought a second one. This video review is solid and accurate couldn't have said it better myself
i wouldnt mind buying this, not like benchmades qc is very good, and normal benchmades have the screw problem too
But is the steel the same? Looks just dont cut it. It's the steel that makes the difference.
some times u just get long screws i got a 940-2 from a good retailer and the screws poke through
Hey Jon M, i read over here on the knife forums that if you own a 940 and you live in the States that you can always mail Benchmade and they will send you a deep carry clip for free, and i saw in the vid that you have the real stuff...so....asking is free!
Amazon has huaao one's for 30 very nice for the price
I bought a real 940-1 off eBay or so I hope. I'm hoping I can see the biggest differences to know if I got screwed.
If the blade is polished it is a fake. S90v cannot be polished.
Conner Bennett it's stone washed
China knives with claimed steel are almost always bogus. There’s a few videos of guys torture testing various knives and counterfeit blades just snap. Those Chinese manufacturers don’t check metallurgy. And hey definitely don’t stress test them.
I’m about to buy one of these but it has 0 badges on the blade. I have a real benchmade bug out. Not sure if there are any “clones” of it out right now and an omega spring broke on it and I have to send it in for repair so I need something to carry while it’s gone/: $60 is my cap for something like this as a back up blade and I feel like this is a decent choice for pretty good quality for quite a budget price. And having one with no badges on the blade might kind of help with the “clone”/“counterfeit” issue maybe? Let me know because I love benchmade as a company and their knives are all top of the line production knives and they back it up with great customer service. Don’t want to hurt their business but I don’t want any other lock besides an axis lock now lol so and ganzo is out of the question.
Just know that something from overseas will take a while. Ganzo makes other actions too. There are lots of good options under $60
When you said 2.49 oz s that's when I ordered the clone !!! Before that I thought it was the ganzo clone with contoured scales !
So if I grind the blade so the swedge is the same it will be the same weight as the 940 !
Dale Carpenter this one was already lighter than the real BM. I reckon CF would be lighter though?
Made me sub. Really good video. I really want to buy the clone but I don't know if I can justify buying a clone for 60-70 usd when sanrenmus and ganzos are under 20 usd.
+Fabianwew thanks for the subscription
Great video! I just did a comparison vid on the Ganzo 7562 vs the Benchmade 940 on my channel. Not a direct clone but definitely pretty close
Damn you all for paying much less for the same thing I paid much more for!!!
I ordered one on amazon germany that looks like the original one...hope it will fit!
+Yew Tree Knives nice, all the ones in the USA are titanium and seem expensive
Actually I would trade you handle screws those fit better than the ones Bench made gave me
Thanks for the video! I have been researching a little bit, and people say that the way to tell is by looking through at the end of the handle at the screws. If they are silver screws, it is a fake and if they are parkerized or black it is most likely Genuine. just curious.... on your model, are they silver or black? Thanks!
+Guns'n Golf mine are black, I don't think that's a good method to determine authenticity.
I've read it is the screw inserts in the CF for the carry clip screws that are silver in the knock off version and the thread inserts are black in the real Benchmade version.
One hundred percent shouldn’t have put the logo on it. I do appreciate your effort in making the video
while I can’t tell anyone what to spend their money on I do feel knives like this are wrong. I don’t work for benchmade but they do take this seriously. I do as well because when I buy a benchmade label knife I expect the warranty and service that comes with the price. The cost that everyone complains about is what helps cover cost of repair the replacement clips the return shipping and the labor of fixing sharpening and maintenance on the knife for a lifetime. These fakes had they not put the benchmade label on them would not cause so much of an issue. When someone unknowingly orders one of these from someone passing it off as real and it happens it doesn’t come whit the warranty. Benchmade can tell the fake and will rightfully keep and destroy it should it be sent in for repairs. Now that person thinking they had a benchmade now has nothing. Make whatever knife you want just don’t put a fake label on it.
Hi Jon M, i just saw this vid and ordered a 940-1 clone last week! Happy to see that the quality is great and looking forward to receive the knife. Allready ordered a deep carry clip online to complete the picture. Regards, Yves PS: i subbed last week allready...
+Yew Tree Knives which clip did you order?
Hi, does yours have any up-down play?
Sounds like you've got a 3D printer going in the background. Maybe somewhere to the left and behind the camera?
I wish! I want one
@@LiquidRetro Maybe a regular printer?
@@pointyfox nope, not sure what it is.
I have tuned all my ganzos to work as good as the 940 !!!
$65 shipped from dhgate exactly the same knife.
Kailen Bittner how is Dhgate? Is it a safe site to purchase knives?
It is not exactly the same it only appears so
Does it have vertical blade play?
From memory no, but it was such a long time ago I doubt they are available anymore
@@LiquidRetro I gues a lot of people still buy them.. They still are available hehe
@
Jon M
hows the durability and the edge retention. i mean of course it wont be as good as s90 or s30 but it is good enuf for edc?
It's been similar to other D2 blades I have.
Jon, just curious if the pivot / action ever loosened up on this model? Also, how is the tension on the spring compared to a real Axis lock?
+Damion Berv the action did loosen up, I would say the spring is slightly stiffer. It's developed a rattle somewhere that I can't pinpoint
Jon M Hmm. Do you think it's worth picking one up at the price you paid for it? Sounds like with the rattle it might not be a worthy purchase.
+Damion Berv it's a minor rattle. I like it and carry still. If you can afford the genuine one of course it's better.
Jon M Yeah, that's my issue; I can't afford the real deal at the moment, but have wanted one of these for a long time. Still debating, but definitely considering going for it. A little nervous about using DH Gate; never used them before.
Tighten the pivot srew and it should center the blade !
+Mannimal 207 the blade is centered. Tightening the screw effects the flip.
Looks worth it
The idea of a counterfeit product elicits a variety of public responses, but, I think people are different in private. Of course, there are counterfeits of the Benchmade 940 and 940-1 widely available, but the prices are still above the value. The damage to Benchmade is more in their relationship with their vendors. If I am aware of the existence of a counterfeit, I will not buy the item on eBay, Amazon and similar sites. When Amazon had a sale on the ZT 220, I did not even consider purchasing it due to the abundance of counterfeit ZT 220s. Anyway, I don’t have that “must have” knife, but, I watch for good deals from legitimate vendors. For example, the M390 versions of the Kershaw Link and Dividend have been very discounted, some to prices below the 940-1 clone prices. Why get a mystery material knife when you can get a real high quality USA made knife with real M390 for less? Another thing I look for are color choices, because often, one color will be way less than another at a given time. I bought a Kizer Kala and a Cold Steel Broken Skull at below 50% of the street price by selecting the color that was not selling. It is really just a matter of value.
Just curious, was it the brown Kala? I got one for $34 that I'm sure was because it was shit brown
Good review thanks for sharing.
kinad hard to compare a clone to a real one that isnt the same version
Scary how clone is. Damn Close to Real
The attitude of Americans toward counterfeit goods is why innovative companies designing beautiful knives like this may some day cease to exist. Who will the Chinese copy then?
I have a clone that I love and carry every day, if it was a true Benchmade there is no way I could ever leave the house with it on the off chance that something may happen to it.
Also when you EDC something, no matter how careful you are it will still get damaged.
Functional is functional, I don't care if it was a 20$ knife or a 900$ knife as long as it can do the job. But again I would seriously baby something so expensive.
What no life sharp service or AXIS lock info in the box. Damn.....
Any idea if the screws have the same threads as the original? I just ordered one and was thinking about putting different spacers and hardware on it once it gets here.
+Ryan Farah no idea, I would have to disassemble both of mine and I am not planning to do that. I did think I might Caracoat my blade but my shop has a minimum $100 order so I need to get some other stuff done.
Jon M No worries. I just wanted to check before spending money on new hardware or spacers. If you happen to pull 1 screw out of each and compare threads let me know!
BTW, great job on your review. This is the reason I got one!
+Ryan Farah glad you liked it and I hope you subscribe!
Jon M So the hardware on the clone is NOT the same as an original 940. The clone uses very soft screws and I wanted to change out the hardware but it is a different thread/pitch.
+Ryan Farah mine had decent screws but I'm sure it's not as good as Benchmade.
In hate counterfeits. But damnit the blade finish on them is better than what Benchmade puts out, the only good that can come from these fakes is if Benchmade Steps up their finishing and CQ to match their prices. Spydercos and benchmades are relying to much on their name.
Did it sharpen up well?
Ya not much of a problem
Link ain’t working
Help
It's a 6 or 7 year old video, things are no longer available
Axis not access. If its a toothy steel then quite possibly D2. But i have yet to own a clone that is even close to the edge retention of even a shitty D2. The vast majority will use some type of 440 or some mov amalgamation at terrible a terrible hardness.
+JGBLADES I am pretty sure it's D2, it's comparable to some legit D2 I have in edge retention. Clone steels do vary, ganzo does a good 440.
I have 6 slightly older Ganzo's. They are nearly identical in edge retention to my Wal-Mart special Ozark Trail knife. But i did not pay 65$ for them either. Buck Knives does a good 440...nobody comes close.
Get over the friggin box the box is crap in the garbbage I have to pay to get rid of !!!!!!
Will the scales from the clone fit the real 940?
+Chris Ng I have no ride this but I am guessing it will
hahah i see. I ruined my scales on my original and am looking for a cheap replacement. Normally it costs upwards of a 100 to get a custom scale done....and 65 for carbon fiber seems like a good option lol
+Chris Ng good luck if you end up going thst route, let me know how it works
The best thing about an Axis lock Benchmade knife is fidgeting with it. Hours spend flipping it open and closed. Doing this with the counterfeit knife will cause the springs to eventually break and unlike the real Benchmade knife you’ll not be sending it back to BM for free lifetime repairs ( and sharpening )and you will be out the fifty or sixty bucks you spent. Only then will you realize the mistake you made. If you can’t buy a real one don’t be part of the China counterfeit market place. DTrump!
Hell yea bro buy it the real are ridiculously over price the clones are the same except blade that goes for any knife
What you have isn't a 'clone.' It's a counterfeit in the same way a counterfeit bill is. They aren't just copying intellectual property, they are outright trying to destroy the company by faking products. It also hurts the secondhand market because potential buyers have to worry over authenticity.
A clone is a copy without the branding, fake box, or fake paperwork.
I have couterfiets and clones of knives tat were better than the original
whys it so heavy....
+Spectre it's pretty light really
I just can’t see buying a clone, giving money to unscrupulous, dishonest Chinese clone manufacturers. Support a great US company that offers excellent customer service.
I'll take the Clone and the extra cash
is D2 or 440c steel
+Nae Catalin mine is D2
Unfortunately, what people don't get, is when you purchase a Chinese forgery, be it a Benchmade knife, Rolex watch or Gucci wallet, not only are you taking money away from these companies, but when people unwittingly purchase forgeries and find flaws, it puts bad reviews out against the actual companies. And Benchmade is an American company, so there's the loss of support for American products. Not sure what people think they gain by purchasing fake products. Bling points? Take a few months and save your money and purchase an actual Benchmade. You'll feel better in the long run and have a life sharp warranty as well.
selling fake copies of legally licensed goods is a crime...supporting these criminal enterprises by knowingly buying them should be a crime too. The laws aren't just to benefit the maker of an item, but to protect the consumer from fraudulent practices too. While I appreciate your knowledge, I don't understand your condoning the practice and sharing a link to buy more with the world. Maybe if you and your family name suffered financial loss and the deformation of using your good name; then you would understand the full impact of what your promoting here.
HardTarget Would you still be opposed to a sterile version with no branding but exactly the same?
Having been on the receiving end of a rip off like this years ago, I don't want anything to do with clones of another product at all.
HardTarget copyright laws are different in china, nothing you can do. luvthemknives has a good video on it
I see what you mean but counterfeits don’t really negatively impact the actual company because their huge companies making so much profit plus someone who buys a clone would most likely never of boughten the real knife probably bc of the price
Stfu you greedy jew, in russia we say if you earn you share or you dont earn at all.
$50 on dh gate.
Whats the ethics of stupid high price . The reasons the companies say for the high price is a lie as far as anyone can tell! Labor material and all the other reasons have be proven false ! Better fit and finish ? I got a crooked river the fit and finish was so bad I had to make sure I didnt get a clone ! But the fit and finish on my $17.00 ganzos is better than the fit and finish of the crooked river I got even in the pivot and ( g) lock springs !!!
I don't feel the loyalty coming from spyderco or many other so called American comp ..how about you !
I don’t get people who buy clones/fakes. Why waste your money on one. Whenever your carrying it around , you will always know that it’s a fake. Plus there’s no resale value, atleast on a real Benchmade you can recoup like 75% of your money.
The stone wash and the box are really good indicators. Too bad Ali gets away with this.
+Mark 3785 is the original not stonewashed in the blade?
The real 940-1 has a satin finish like the original. a little darker though. Check the Benchmade website and other reviews.
+Mark 3785 Ya my green 940 is satin, wish it was actually stonewashed as I think it would hide scratches better.
Agreed, I think stone washed is more attractive.
When benchmade gets off the butterfly price then well talk about a real deal ! If the so called Americans dont mind ripping people off i dont feel bad about buying a clone !!! instead of just taking their price in the ass . I dont by hype when theres hype price I look for the clone and get 2 !
I tune clone especially benchmade clones to work better than the real ones !
D2 steel is very good steel for a pocket knife !!!
Is the real one $200.00 or more better ??
Whats with the box ! Reviewers are like it has crappy plastic not as good as so American plastic . Who gives a crap about the figgin box ?
Not getting on your case!
Its just a thing that is the same in America as it is anywhere but because its Chinese some how its not as good !BS
I wonder if reviewers look back at their reviews
Like they get after something on a clone for the same thing they don't get after on the real one .
If its not good on the clone how is the same thing ok on the real one !
try the BM homepage on this link: www.benchmade.com/contacts/
To all the people whining about how clones are immoral, blah, blah, blah; do you guys work for Benchmade? I don't think that they are sweating this clone and haven't bothered to make an issue of this knife and defend themselves, so why do you feel the need to do it for them? If you don't believe in clones, don't buy them. You don't have to harp on the rest of us.
$70 on a clone? 😂
The Benchmade logo is a registered trademark, therefore this is a counterfeit knife.
Its NOT D2 and it is a carbon fiber inlay. The "fluid" ur talking about has nothing to do with how its made it how loose u have it. The extra care ur talking about its cuz its more worn down...i can go on amd on... Lol u know nothing.
The carbon fiber scale is said to be all carbon fiber . Hum better than aluminium !
The carbon fiber that was talked about is plastic; the Chinese can't use carbon fiber because of the cost. I purchased 3 clones off of Wish , knew they were clones that's all Wish sells. Look at the knifes edge on the fake is black, the real
Lol it's real carbon I'm almost certain. Not peel and ply
Let's stop with the clone or homage or any other euphemism, it's a counterfeit!🙄
Call it what it really is; a *_fake_*.
I just can’t see buying a clone, giving money to unscrupulous, dishonest Chinese clone manufacturers. Support a great US company that offers excellent customer service.
