You should put a 3rd brake light on the tip of the boom so your towed vehicle knows when to hit their brakes harder.

Easier. Take an old tire and put it on de boom. So the cable goes through it. The thing being towed will be cushened by it.
I know Matt has talked about making a tow bar for the wrecker which would fix that issue as well.
Rory doesn’t run one, but Matt doesn’t have to pickup and set down the towed vehicle as much because the wrecker is more capable and Sand hollow has more ways out.
They make brake attachments for towed vehicles but they're usually model specific or just a big remote foot to press the brake pedal for you which might work in this case but would easily be bumped out of place I imagine.
We are so thankful for Matt's Offroad Recovery! They came to the rescue when our Bronco was broken on the trail. Without them, who knows how long we would have been waiting out there! Thanks again, Matt and the Team!

That's a great looking bumper. This recovery will definitely add in R&D of the way it mounts to the frame horns.

After seeing what the tow did to that bumper it makes me want to get rid of my DV8 bumpers on my Jeep. What caused that?

Matt’s such a upstanding guy. Most tow companies would say “damage is the nature of the beast in situations like this” not Matt. He takes care of it when it happens and makes it clear that he will without question. What a guy.
Considering the bumper failed that the customer themselves manufactured, I’d tell em to pound sand.

@@tommyolson2258 I'm pretty sure those metal eyelets were supposed to be in there from the start, they weren't in there and that's why it rubbed through the soft shackle

The problem was the frame, not the bumper- the frame bent. Or, more accurately, the problem was THORR's method of recovering vehicles by dangling them half in the air while towing them over off-road obstacles...they complain about lack of attachment points, well how many vehicles are going to have attachment points that are going to be able to support that sort of strain?
@AM D idk if stock Wranglers can even be towed like that with the stock backward and top mounted recovery hooks. I'd feel like they'd immediately slip off the THORR. If one of the most common offroad machines can't be pulled like this. Matt and the crew need to figure a way to pull them without a janky and sketchy rigging of softshackles and the winches.
DV8 learned a lot about their bumper thanks to the off-road wrecker.
Totally agree I just looked up how those DV8 "winch" bumpers attach. they will inevitably flex into the body of your vehicle. Rear bumpers are the same way tons of complaints of body chafing.

Yeah I avoided the winch bumper for their other one for that reason
@@codywise1451 -- Someone thought that a winch bumper will probably only ever have a straight pull level to the vehicle... Probably didn't consider the fact that a vehicle should be able to be lifted by a jack from its bumper...
Which I mean is fair to them, no one really expects a bumper to deal with a vertical load that’s like over 50% of the weight with large bumped and sudden momentum changes.
How cool that MORR and the customer both got real world feedback about how to improve your designs.

As a tow op, might I suggest modifying the wrecker to use the sling method with a custom tow bar so you don’t need someone to drag breaks.
I agree. Just as Eric does with his truck. Sometimes a good old sling does the job best. Not always. Rory doesn't like a sling setup. But better to be equipped for either way and have the option.
Came here to say this. You need some kind of drawbar to keep the towed vehicle from running into you during braking and downhills.

I actually don't think damage like that should be Matt's problem you seriously can't expect to go off-roading crash or have a mechanical failure in the middle of a trail and expect to be rescued with no risk of damage it would be different if Matt backing into a vehicle or tried to pickup a car via something inappropriate and did damage.
In a regular off road recovery they shouldn't be held responsible. Given the circumstances its cool of them to cover the damage.
The amount of respect for Rory just went through the roof. He has operated alone for years with his. Can’t wait to see Matt get to that level of proficiency. He’ll be unstoppable.

Have to have lots of respect for how easy Rory makes it look towing rigs off serious trails. I've seen him recover a propane truck that nearly rolled down a cliff with TrailMator. I bet some amazing stuff doesn't make it to YT.
Time to add a tow bar! I know Rory doesn’t like them, and they don’t work well in crazy twisted up situations, but there is definitely a reason for them and they are far better in 90% of what you’ll be doing and will prevent damage to the towed vehicle
Isn't it kinda too solid for sharp angles though? When you use the tow bar on the back of your truck it's mostly on relatively flat ground, right? What about obstacles though..
@@JohnFL BSF was using a tow bar during the wrecker games. It did break eventually but they do work to a certain degree, and maybe with TomTom’s engineering they could make one that can handle the angle.
Also important to note they quickly get off the difficult trails on to easier stuff, so maybe they wait to hook it up.
What about on that hooks to the center pintle hitch so it has all sorts of articulation.
The way it’s rigged makes a big difference in how much angle it can handle. Obviously it can’t do what ropes can do, but here’s the cool thing about using one…. You can unhook it and just use the rope setup to get through something crazy when needed.
The simple fact is that for the vast majority of situations the tow bar is better and will save causing damage.

The way that wrecker just gently cruises up inclines is super impressive. Great design and build job.

@@davidmore190 it didn't struggled with any of inclines in this video and there was many of them. and about breaking parts, it is not finished. it is like v1.1 or smth, it will fail and break in future too, but it is the way of improvement, you can't make something perfect on your first try when you are the first, who is doing it, remember, this guys had to design and develop every part in their or someone's garage

If you had actually built anything you would know that nothing is 100% off the drawing board. I am a professional mechanical engineer you are clearly not qualified to comment on the machine. When Matt had just the Bannana, he always impressed me with what he could get done with the little he had with him. Things have changed and he is playing in new water. I wonder if Rory gives lessons.

That's why I became a fan. Now the recoveries are not as impressive, but the characters are entertaining.
Throughout Matt’s videos one thing that always shines through is, he is a gifted teacher, even though he could more quickly do something himself he usually instructs someone else to do it and guides them through doing it.
This recovery is simply the first of many steps to dial in the wrecker. Things could have been done differently for sure, but it’s a learning process that will take many recoveries to perfect.
Rory has the most experience and has learned a lot, but not without his share of ‘awe crap’ moments. 🙂
Important lesson there was the soft shackle doesn't like 90 degree angle metal. This is a perfect example of getting experience as you go. Great video and the shack down cruises are definitely important.
Metal d-ring shackles would have been better for that type of bumper or winch mount grill guards! That's why tow trucks carry multiple types of recovery gear!

Anything that has a sharp corner or bend needs a hard shackle
I would have expected the customer to have organized putting the shackles on the bumper, given that they’re the vendor. But hey, now everybody knows.
@@jrrarglblarg9241 That's what you call testing and product refinement, even a 1/8th inch fillet on that would have made a big difference. I'm an industrial designer and you're engrained to put fillets on everything and never leave a sharp edge, even the smallest fillet to maintain a strong edge line if that's what you want.
Would some Kevlar sleeves over the shackles make a difference?
My first car was a 1967 Bronco that my high school FFA teacher in Prairie City, Oregon helped me restore, in 1979. Thank You Mr. Bepp! That Bronco took me into {and home from} every nook of the Eastern Oregon Wilderness, and could literally climb a tree. Later Broncos that my brothers bought reflected F.O.R.D. Fix Or Repair Daily (Smile). Like you never see Horse Drawn carriages anymore...When did Horses lose their ability to draw pictures of wagons and carriages?
We also tried tried to buy a Corvair Lakewood that was in a Barn in Bates Oregon! I fell in love with this channel when they built the MorrVair, teaching Welding and fabrication like Mr. Bepp taught us to weld and build. Respect!
Made a trip out to Hurricane to see the sites. I am from Georgia and flew out to see all these places with my own eyes and had a great time. I stopped by Winder Towing to see the place and get a T shirt. Had a conversation with the lovely woman behind the counter and it really made the trip memorable for me. The team were unfortunately out on a job, but it was still a blast. Thanks to you Matt and your team for being the awesome, super nice people they are portrayed as in the show. The shirt fits great and will become the go to T for all house and mechanical work. Thanks again, ya'll are great. Keep it up and don't change.
And thats one of the reasons why Rory doesn't use soft shackles and only D rings on the boom. I'm guessing that by now after the Wrecker games you guys have figured that out already plus more. Always love the content guys it's good to get my weekly dose from all the great off road channels on CZcams. I'm a Trail Mater/Rory Irish fan through and through and this friend group is absolute goals!!
I think that the so-called games are going to be very educational to all of the participants and they will gain a lot of useful experience to carry forward, except for Rory, he's the king!

Rory is a leader with many years of experience in this type of recovery! I love watching all of them. Each has different content but if you have seen their wrecker builds they have adopted what Rory has proven to work.
Yes the Wrecker is impressive! Good learning experience yada yada yada . But I have only one question. Is there anything Lizzy can't do? I mean seriously! What an awesome role model. No such thing as can't. Her interests and accomplishments are endless. Way to go Lizzy life to its fullest!
Matt's a genius - building an off-road wrecker to accommodate all the new IFS Bronco's hitting the trails. I predict a high volume of Broncos with broken front axles attached to the back of the wrecker.

You can really see the difference in experience between Rory and Matt. Rory has obviously been doing this for years, but Matt is knowledgeable enough to learn quickly 🤘
I'd think Matt would have plenty of experience. He does own a tow company (that we only see glimpses of). But rugged off-road towing is new to him.
It's just different areas of expertise and experience.

I remember Matt explaining that he only needs 2 seats in the wrecker. How many videos has there been, already, with crew riding on the back. He did the same with the MORRvair when he said there was plenty of room in the back.

MischiefMaker only has two seats, but if they have the Banana or Morrvair they’ll have extra seats.
I think it’s a fair assumption that the wrecker will normally have an extra vehicle along.

Matt, you need to build a pair of adjustable "stand-off bars" for the wrecker. Essentially telescoping pipes that you can adjust the length on. Build a mount for them on the center of the rear bumper of the wrecker and design ends for them that can be attached to the central mount on your wrecker and the outermost part of the front axle(s) of whatever you are towing forming a triangle with the wrecker at the pinnacle. They should be able to pivot up and down freely with a full range of vertical motion but with only a little horizontal movement from side to side once attached at each end. The central pivot at your bumper would make backing the towed vehicle up like a trailer rather than having it free to swing back and forth, etc.. This should prevent the towed vehicle from running under your boom and incurring damage to the hood, bumper, or grill. You would only use them once you have the stuck vehicle free and are towing it back on the trail. Just my .02 cents.

I mean we see what they show us. No doubt people's tempers get the better of them, these are humans. Pretty rare that CZcamsr's put up any type of "negative footage". A few do, but most do not.
I'm not in anyway experienced in towing (I've been towed plenty of that matters)
Perhaps you guys could use one of those rubber tow bars to reduce the risk of collision with the boom and wrecker - also to stabilize the vehicle while towing.
And as added protection on top of that, maybe take some yellow foam pool tubes (or maybe something a bit denser) and attach them to the under side of the boom, the end of the boom and the rear bumper of the wrecker.
Could also get some heavy mats made (like the kind flatbed trucker drivers use to protect some cargo from strap or chain damage) to throw over the hood and grill of the vehicle being towed, further reducing the risk of damage in boom bump or tail slap. You could have some loops sown all over them so that you could throw it on a hood and use bungees to hold it on.

I see a bigger/longer boom in the wrecker’s future. It was interesting watching Matt learn how this rigs gets the job done ! I’ve got a set of DV8 tube fenders on my TJ .great stuff at a very reasonable price.

Yes I think either longer or telescoping would be good.
Also that DV8 bumper might need some more mounting points or something so it doesn't fold but the unit itself seems very solid.
Perhaps he will include a pair of Dring shackles as well.
Longer boom may lead to dented hoods. Maybe a cable lifted wheel or frame recovery cradle
@@jeffbeard395 longer boom let’s you have more cable out while still having the rig you’re towing’s front wheels off the ground..which means the hood is farther away from boom and the rear end of the truck .
I think that boom is too short for these recoveries, but Wrecker isn't even struggling at all
Only by about a foot but i suspect you are correct.
They need some kind of solid A frame to stop the vehicle being towed from swinging forward into the boom or the back of the heavy wrecker.

The DV8 guys are awesome. It's cool you rescued them. I sold a lot of the DV8 stuff when I did aftermarket parts.
I appreciate the honesty displayed in showing the learning curve. I watched DV8s video as well. Appears like it was the front frame horns that bent, not their bumper. Much respect to Matt for his transparency and offer to pay.

Mechanical engineer here.
Matt, you need something like a simple horizontal push/pull bar between the boom and the connection point (bow shackle) to prevent the swinging.
You can make it folding up to the boom. Once you lift the car high enough you could fold that bar down and tie it to the bow shackle. Keep it a bit loose to allow some movement.

IMHO, you probably need to have a crossing stabilizer straps (extra heavy duty) between the rear of the wrecker and front of what you are towing (like what Trailmater does). This would be both for safety if the boom lines break and stabilization (left to right ) swinging motion of the towed vehicle. A longer boom might also give some more clearance for front to back swinging motion..
Lots of broken steering in late model Broncos out there. Look at how thin those tie rod ends are! A good curb hit would snap them, no off roading required.

@@bromack2353 Agree ... Unfortunately it will probably take a death before Ford really addresses the issue. My fear would be to unknowingly damage the steering off road and then have it totally fail at 80 MPR on the Hwy ...... I suppose the same could occur on a solid axle, but those components are typically way more robust and have been vetted over the years.

Off roaders have the best attitude when it come to breakdowns , I remember encountering one where his wheel completely ripped off and he was just like "welp I guess I have a lot to fix now."

Good job overall. I guess DV8 Offroad is going to have to beef up their bumper design a bit, and Matt needs to start carrying some real shackles along with the soft shackles.
Yes, Matt should carry some real shackles. But DV8 should deburr their parts and not sell stuff with sharp edges, especially since everyone is using soft shackles these days.

That's the complete reason why Rory prefers to get it mobile with 4 wheels on the ground before he tows them out. Much respect to all of you. I think I remember Paul bouncing his old boom off a hood on hard incline.

I was thinking Rory would have welded that tie rod together and got him mobile. Matt isn't as good of a stick welder.

I saw the smile on Matt’s face after climbing that hill, wow, what a monster he created, so impressive, without any effort
Y’all may consider looking at the off-road pintle hitches like what my old ‘52 GMC Deuce and a half had on it… It rotated freely with a heavy coil spring on it to absorb some shock front to rear. I think it was a standard issue kind of thing, if not I can still describe it in detail enough to build a replica.
Take that and a heavy duty variant of the draw bars you see RV’s using to pull Jeeps on the highway. Possibly even some military surplus ones for the 5 Tons. But use MORR straps to secure it to the lower control arms or frame instead of to the bumper. This would help keep the towed vehicle from swinging forward into the wrecker while the boom carries the weight. The swiveling pintle would let things flex and twist as well so you don’t have to be worried about rolling the towed vehicle with it when you flex out. … it’s only there to control the distance of the towed vehicle from the Wrecker.

That bumper that broke looks like a good R&D moment for DV8, it looks very nice and solid though. Nice job on the recovery, its way easier with a wrecker than it would've been with the other rigs. Looking forward to the Wrecker Games!
and chamfering the holes on the recovery points so they don't cut soft shackles. They could do well making tie rod replacements, seems like I've seen several break on the new Broncos.
@@TD_YT066 that could be done, but it makes them weaker for normal metal shackles because the force is on a smaller surface.
D-Rings should be standard issue for every recovery kit.
The biggest flaw with the wrecker so far is the short boom on a big vehicle that has long travel and fairly soft suspension.

The soft shackle has been born again. Sailors like them because they’re lightweight, waterproof, stronger than stainless steel equivalent shackles, don’t hurt if they hit you in the head or the hand, and don’t damage things like the deck, rigging, mast or sails, oh, and they float. Four-wheelers like them for the same reason. The new lines are soo strong, but they do chafe! Even wire chafes but at no where near the same rate.
The new Bronco's are HEAVY, much heavier than most people think. The load it puts on it's components is really high, and I'm not surprised it was tough to tow!
And their steering is way underbuilt.
Yep, 5000 lbs and that's WITHOUT all the added accessories.
@@toddwilliams5905 well the one the pulled out does not have the Sasquatch package and appeared to be on 37”s. Change the geometry exceed to load rating.
I’m sure Matt will talk with Rory on Trailmater about how to tow vehicles as they tie them on differently. They have it dialed in.

Thinking about the bumper bending, I actually think this is a problem for the Heavy Wrecker's recovery method more than the bumper. Towing a truck suspended in the air like that off-road doesn't just put static loads like if you were jacking from the bumper. The fact that it was dangling off a tow truck while being towed over uneven and hilly terrain put much greater loads and stresses, and repeatedly as well. You're gonna exceed the elastic deformation capacity of that steel and move into plastic deformation.
I have a steel tube bumper and no way I'd expect it to be able to survive being towed like that unscathed, especially because it's just attached to the same mount points as the regular bumper, it's not like welded to a ladder frame or anything like that.
This is a totally new type of rescue, you are learning and adjusting!!! Great Job!!

This was an awesome field trip! Once Matt has figured out the little bugs and comes up with safe towing procedures (aka soft shackles don't like sharp edges!) the TWLOW will be a beast! It's amazing how easy it dragged that Bronco up that steep first hill... 😲😎🤟

Thanks for the awesome vid. Amazing how the Wrecker turned out. Looking at this recovery I'm assuming you had the same thoughts. You might need to consider some sort of solid bar / A-frame design to keep the towed vehicle away from the wrecker when going down hill or over obstacles. Awesome work though guys, looking forward to many more recovery videos and the upgrades to the Wrecker
Definitely needs something like a damped bar or H type frame that can quickly attach to any front / rear axle...or maybe even a complete re-design and fabricate some form of hydraulic pivoting axle lift and clamp system then you don't have to rely on wire rope and dubious lifting points.
I was thinking the same thing a tow sling with extra long belts(I use old rock quarry belts) I've been doing off-road recovery for over 30 of my 52 years on this earth

Almost seems like the towed vehicle should have the football so the driver of the wrecker can think about driving. Also wondering about all the hardware on the back of the wrecker, might need to find a better spot to stow the pintles, one less thing to crash into + more space. MORR will figure it out!

I've watched two truck operators here in Ontario canada and they half the time get frustrated maybe because of the traffic,but you guys all have smiles from ear to ear going with the flow and work together to get the job done 👍
Yeah, because they're not fighting traffic!!! I rather be stuck figuring out how to get somebody out of a pinch than be stuck in traffic. I say that because of personal experience; traffic drives me nuts!!!🤙🏻

hello Matt and all the crew I live in Livingston Montana I am disabled with heart problems now but fell off a train in 1985 in and out of hospitals for a few years but now I can walk again but it still hurts after all these years plus I am on a set income so I was not able to go to The off road wrecker games for my birthday on March 9th. I turned 67 yrs old and now I feel like a hermit now stuck between these 4 walls stuck in here for ever now ( got to get out of here got to get out of here ) since I am home bound I enjoy all your videos and all those videos that the peole that went to the games on CZcams

Looks like you need a metal anchor shackle for the metal to metal contacts, and that will give you a rounded surface for the soft shackles to bear on. Now that you're done, I can see that you've done exactly what I was thinking! Great minds, etc. And Lizzie's outstanding again!
They need a few pairs of different sizes in the toolbox...those used here were the customer's shackles.
