Removing the valve seat / barrel on an American Standard shower valve (Re-Nu series valve stem)

  • I made this video because I was pretty confused the first time I opened up the shower valve and did not see anywhere to insert a valve seat wrench. I originally assumed the valve seat was not removable until a guy at the hardware store explained that it is removable as shown in this video.
    If you need to replace the seals in the valve stem / barrel or the replace the valve stem / barrel itself I have provided that information from an Ace Hardware catalog below. Washer size might be incorrect though because both my valve stems took a 3/8 washer (5/8 inch O.D.).

    The design of these valve stems is referred to as Re-Nu or Renu I believe.

    Thanks for the video. This is probably a stupid question...but: If the barrel isn't screwed in like a seat, what holds it in place and stops it from turning when you turn the knob/stem to turn the water on and off. It seems like it would just turn freely.

      When you screw the valve stem back in, it pushes the back chamfer face of the barrel (containing the o-ring) up against a mating surface and the friction between the two surfaces prevents the barrel from rotating. I made a related video BTW that talks about how the barrel and shower handle can sometimes keep spinning and what to do if that happens.

      @@chrisjohnson9903 Haha, I was just working on a friend's and never saw a seat barrel like that, had always seen the small threaded in seats. I was also wondering what kept the barrel from spinning. Could not stop the leaking even with new washer, think a new seat is needed.

      @@chrisjohnson9903 thanks for the video and the other one on dealing with a spinning handle. I have this going on now and will try your fix

    Thank you sir, really helpful video. Curious where did you find the valve gasket and the O ring to replace ?

      Info for the o-ring is in the 2nd imgur link in the video descrption. They had it in stock at my local Ace Hardware store.
      As for the gasket (#9, 35551), I found a few sites that sell it online but it didn't really seem worth it for various reason. So I carved it out of a rubber sheet instead using an X-Acto knife and a compass (1-1/4 OD x 1 ID x 1/8 thick). You can buy a 6 x 6 rubber sheet at any hardware store.

    What tips do you have if my barrel doesn’t come out and is stuck

    • @chrisjohnson9903
      @chrisjohnson9903  Před rokem

      When I took the barrel out for the first time, I had to pull on it a bit because the o-ring was deteriorated and stuck to the surface it presses against (the barrel had not been removed for many years probably). I didn't have to pull on it too hard though, so if it doesn't come out with a decent amount of force I'm not sure what the problem would be.

      @@chrisjohnson9903 thanks for the response. I ended up purchasing a nipple extractor and that got it out.
