Hi Kenton: I needed your influence badly. Your video helped me overcome the usual plumbing fear and since my plumber was too busy for what I found out was a very small and quite easy task… after watching your video I said “I can do that!” And I did. Nice step by step process…!!
Glad to help
probably good to lay a towel down in the shower or tub to make sure no screws or parts go down the drain. Will also make cleanup of your tenants space easier. Thanks for sharing!
That is a great tip! Thank so much for watching and sharing that.
Should I leave up before running the water pressure again?
Thank you for posting this excellent tutorial video. I never replaced faucet cartridges before and your video was so well done that even a newbie like me could do it perfectly first time around. Keep it up 👍🏻
Great to hear!
Thanks for the video! Saved me a lot of money by doing it myself!
Glad I could help!
Thanks you for this. It worked like a charm. Thanks for the tip about going through corporate for new parts. I will definitely utilize it next time.
You're welcome!
If you call them, will they replace for free?
Thank you! Works great!
Great to hear!
Thank you so much.. what a wonderful info. God bless you.
You are welcome, so glad you found it helpful.
Thanks for the informative video, as I'am getting ready to change mine.
Welcome
Thanks for your video. You showed me that I could Do this myself. Parts cost under $40 from Lowe’s.
Glad I could help, nice work!
Hi, thanks for the video. One comment regarding removing the handle. After trying quite a while to find an allen wrench that fit I was eventually lucky enough to have the handle come off and found that there was no allen screw...it was a standard flat head screw. I imagine this is due to the unit being fairly old.
That may not be an original screw, but glad you figured it out!
@@KentonKnows Yeah, it was the same screw for two valves. Probably installed in 1975.
My inner balance cartridge won't come out. Now what?
1:42 THANK YOU! American Standard sending me free replacements! Didn't know there were lifetime warranties.
You are very welcome!!! You’ll have to figure out how to get it out - sometimes it can be hard. Twist it and pull.
Paint can key
Thanks for watching - hope it helps you save some money when you need to replace your pressure cartridge!
Ordered the parts yesterday. Thanks for the vid
helpful info - will definitely be using this. thanks for more great tips and content kenton.
Great to hear, thanks for watching and commenting!
Thank you so much for the links I look for hours for what trim kit is compatible with the 47mm cartridge you are using. This is the only video that had links thank you!!!!
You are welcome, so glad it helped you!

Great content 👌 👏 👍
Thank you!
Great video. I've replaced both parts but there is a slow drip from what looks like the pressure balancing valve when i turn the shower back on. Is there a workaround for this?
i have the same cartridge and needed to change it because the water was only warm so i got one on amazon and put it together and its still warm.....when i went under the sing to shut the water off or on to the tub/shower.. i noticed the cold valve turned on both hot and cold with the cartridge in but with the white head piece off ... is the deep set cartridge mixing water prior to the control ?
Better check for any leakage before putting all the trim on.... I've had brand new balancing spools & cartridges damaged and they leaked. Also I've had the cartridge leak if it wasn't tightened "evenly" or if it was overtightened / under tightened.
would there be a way I can identify the part number for the Pressure Balance Unit or cartridge for my shower? and are the both parts pretty much universal for most the american standard shower faucet in that style like in the video?
Do you know by any chance if there are any other kit trims that match up with the 47 mm cartridge. Apparently the kit trim you linked to currently unavailable. I’ve seen comments saying it’s been discontinued 😞
In your opinion, is it wise to turn the water back on before installing the outer plate so that you can see if there are any leaks before concealing everything?
I'm paranoid about doing the repair and then having a leak behind the wall that I can't see.
Thanks for your help. This is a great video!
It certainly wouldn't hurt, especially if it would ease your anxiety about a leak in the wall. Once the valve is secure, you should be good to turn the water back on and confirm there are not any leaks.
Your video is very clear and helpful, it would be excellent if you told your viewers how to find or locate the cartridge part number in order to buy a new one, or if the part number is located on the damaged cartridge if they cannot find it, remember some of these valves could be quite old, or home owners may not have any information on the product that needs repair. thanks.
Good point, I’ll be sure to add that on the next one, thanks
@@KentonKnows You are absolutely appreciated and a great help for many Thanks again.
I had to replace that because the shower head was dripping. First tried replacing the front cartridge, didn't help. The pressure cartridge is cheaper... 20 bucks at home Depot versus 30 for the front cartridge.
Thank you so much for this helpful video! This replacement solved a water hammer issue in my tub. However, after the replacement, my handle is hard to turn. Do you know why this might be? Are there certain screws I may have tightened too much?
You may want to google it to be honest - I’m not completely sure on that one.
What do you do if it still Drips?
I followed the instructions. It work for a month and now I’m having the same problem a month later. Any reasons for that ?
What size allen wrench
This is a great clear video. However I am stumped as I am unable to get past the first step as the screw hole for the Allen key does not line up with a screw. Any ideas?
Try turning it, pulling it etc to see if you can get it to line up.
What if my shower is making a knocking or banging noise in the pipes by the valve? It doesn't happen when it's all the way hot, or all the way cold. It only starts when we try to get a mix/warm water. Could this be the shower cartridge or the pressure balance unit or both? Or something else...?
You may need a water hammer arrestor.
If my pressure balancing unit works fine, can I just replace the valve cartridge? Is it best to replace both?
You can replace only one, but I always replace them both since I have the water off and I opened everything up.
What keeps water from the shower head falling onto the handle, entering the cartridge enclosure and draining into the wall? I'm on my 2nd model, looks like a defective design.
The caps and covers before you put the handle on should keep water out the cartridge enclosure. I have these at a lot of properties and haven’t ever seen the issue you are describing. It’s mostly likely that it wasn’t installed properly if that is happening.
when I removed the cartridge, one of the small holes had water coming out even though I had turned water off. I had to take price to the hardware store, and when I came e back ( with no new part , nobody had it) the water was still coming out of the hole! is this another problem??? help!
Your water isn’t off if water is still cooking out
Did you turn off the main water valve prior to replacing the pressure balance cartridge?
Yes! You definitely need the water off to remove the cartridge.
So, American Standard will send out the parts with no cost?
Yes, if you register your product and describe the problem, they will.
My cartridge broke in half on removal. How do I get the other half out?
You’ll just need to use a pair of needle nose pliers to pull it out.
Is it necessary to grease any of the O rings?
I haven’t and never had any issues.
Do these pieces have the part # on them?
Only on the packaging. Once you open it the package, I don’t see any any part numbers on the actual part itself.
I recently replaced one of these and got really bad water pressure after the one one was installed, doesn’t leak anymore but terrible water pressure now.any ideas/suggestions??
You might want to check to see if your shower head screen has some debris in it.
That’s exactly what it was,thanks!!
@@Everydayprojects365 Glad to hear it, happy to help!
Do need to turn off water supply before hand?
@@gijoe696 yes, definitely turn off the water first!
I replaced the parts as per your instructions but when I turned water supply back on again no water came out of the shower head. What am I doing wrong ?
Without seeing it, it’s hard to say, but is it possible that when you put the balancing unit in you put it upside down? The two holes should be on the bottom and the center hole on the top.
@@KentonKnows yes, the balancing unit is in there correctly. Because I'm not getting water to flow through, I tested without adding the cartridge to make sure water was indeed coming through the balancing unit and it does. It is after I add the cartridge and then turn the water back on that it isn't working. Not sure if the part is defective or I'm missing something when installing the cartridge. I'm dumbfounded!
Will replacing stop leaking?
Yes, it should.
What happens when the ring breaks and it doesn’t fully come out?
If any part of the balancing unit breaks, you'll need to ensure all parts are fully removed before installing the new parts so it is clear as I show in the video. If you asking about the brass ring, I have that part listed in the description as well if you need to replace it.
I noticed how you make sure you hold your tongue right.
It helps me concentrate.
Hi Kenton what is the model number of this cartridge thank you
It’s in the description below the video along with a link to Amazon to buy it.
@@KentonKnows thank you
My shower has a very loud hammering noise at one spot when cold and hot water is" mixing" in my shower. Is that the fault of pressure balancing cartridge?
Could be that you need to install water hammer arrestors or your pipes may not be secure and they are moving and hitting the wall. You’ll probably need to open the wall (front or back side) to correct either of those issues.
@@KentonKnows it's a four family house and the hammering noise coming only from that one fixture.
After watching your video I got brave enough to open the shower faucet and took it apart and before put it back together I took photos of the parts and purchased replacement parts in Home Depot. On Monday I'll try to replace it and will let you know of the outcome.
My holes didn't align when I put on the brass plate.
Then the cartridge probably wasn’t installed correctly
Where can I order it?
I have the links in the description below the video
I can’t find a shower valve that fits this
I have the link to get it from Amazon in the description below the video.
What about we replaced both items and it still leaks
Hmmm, not sure without seeing it in person. I’d be very surprised if you got a bad unit, but it is possible.
It may be that the whole house's water pressure is too high. It can happen. Try lowering the pressure on the cold supply by slightly turning the main cold water supply shut off valve to the house and see if the leaking stops.
What size Alan? You don't know?!
I used #3
also before it was hot water only ,now it's cold only!!!
Your water isn’t off if water is still coming out.
@@KentonKnows how do I make sure it is? I swear I turned of every valve and even the pump in the breaker box. My bathrooms on the top floor so nothing should have been draining down. I'm befuddled where it is coming from
@@treshaparker5285 you need to find the main line coming into the house. Probably at your water meter.
Also, it's a good idea to keep your tongue in your mouth.
That’s great advice, thank you!
