What is Sim Racing With a D-Box Motion Setup Like? (Raw Thoughts)

- One of the coolest things I got to experiment with this Winter was the First Generation D-Box Motion Platform, giving me four actuators to mount onto my Heusinveld Sim Rig GT. However, when I pieced everything together, it sunk in that the Sim Racing Cockpit I was using was actually worth more than the price of my two real life cars combined!
So, that brings the question... Is a High End Sim Racing motion setup truly worth the investment? Let's take a look!

Some quick notes about this video that I didn't fit or forgot to include in the video itself:
I tested this for approximately two months, where I put it through its paces.
I generally ran with less FFB, but for the video, I had forces turned up slightly to show the effects. I also tested out different effects and styles that were recommended to me by other motion users.
I didn't get to use it as long as I would have liked to fine tune EVERYTHING, but I had enough time to really learn what the system is capable of.
A few people told me that sometimes people just enjoy running the motion as "4 bass shakers" with minimal movement. At that point, I'm just thinking I'd rather have 4 Buttkickers. Cheaper, more instantaneous, and works well..
I'm still open to testing out other motion setups and maybe reviewing in the future, but personally, from the 4 motion setups I've tested, I feel like they suffer the same flaws.
Btw you say Fanatec wrong you say it as fan-a-tech
RIP, you wil be missed forever

R.I.P and thank you for sharing your passion and inspire people.
I came to youtube wondering if I would see your video on the announcement of the new CSL-DD, then I remembered 😟. Rest in peace man. Back when I was making a few videos here and there myself and was bigger into sim racing is right around the time you were just starting your channel and putting out videos. You progressed so much throughout your career on CZcams, your videos were always enjoyable to watch and you always came across as very authentic and honest with all of your reviews and opinions on everything related to sim racing. You were also so nice, always responding to comments and engaging in discussion in a positive way. Just a genuinely kind and cool guy, the kind of person that anyone would love to hang out with. The world needs more people like you William, not less.
Great video. You pretty much summarized my thoughts on motion platforms; I find a lot of people tend to overhype it. A couple of years ago, a friend and I had a chance to try out a variety of motion rigs, including a D-Box setup like the one you have in this video and another setup that was more of a mid-tier seat mover setup. After that experience, here are my thoughts on motion:
1) It's an all or nothing proposition. At least for me, the mid tier setup detracted more from the driving experience due to how unnatural and exaggerated the movements were, along with the fact that the wheel and pedals didn't move with the driver. Granted, this may have come down to configuration, but the D-Box setup felt natural enough to where I didn't really notice it much by the end and it just blended in with the force feedback and the rest of the experience. So for me, it would be D-Box or nothing if I wanted to go with a motion setup.
2) Diminishing returns. As with most hobbies, there is a point of diminishing returns, and motion seems to be way past that point. As you mentioned, there are plenty of instances where motion doesn't make sense, or is at least difficult to configure for. And as someone who takes part in the majority of the iRacing special 12 and 24 hour endurance races, I cannot imagine it would be a good idea to add motion to the mix when doing long sets of stints. Spending that kind of money for something so hit-or-miss just doesn't seem like a good idea.
3) The daily barrier of entry. As someone with a full time job, wife and kid, I have increasingly grown to appreciate things that are plug and play and easy to get in and out of. The amount of up front configuration, the extra wiring, and the added overhead each time you want to race is another major turnoff. Back around the holidays, I spent about an hour setting up batch scripts to completely automate swapping over monitors, setting up my dash display and turning all the companion apps on or off when getting in and out of my sim rig and it was by far the best thing I've done for my rig in quite some time. Simply reducing the barrier of entry needed to race each night has made me much more inclined to hop in and race. Adding stuff like motion would honestly make me less likely to race, especially once the novelty wears off.
I miss you so much. I hope you're at peace, my friend. I remember coming to your streams and you were so welcoming, kind and helpful. I'll always have you in my thoughts.
RIP Brother and my condolences to your family who may be rewatching your videos.
Damn I just looked up what wheel to get and watched your video about it and thought wow that's a cool and informstove video I'll sub to this dude. Thank you for helping me choose a wheel beyond the grave. RIP ❤️

Great video and looking trimmer my bro

Nice review, I could not afford a full D-Box set up for my set up, but did get Motion House seat mover as I wanted some type of motion due to the sensation my four shakers brought to the table. Personally can't say enough good things about it and could only say with out motion I would be missing an element. I do believe less is more as it is easy to set it up to throw you around, but to get that realistic feel it is the subtle moments that bring realism to the table for me, but don't get me wrong. Coming around the last turn at Sebring in an RSR you have to feel your way to moment of traction ............ Would love to one day try out the D-Box solution, thanks for taking the time to look at this for us
Race in Peace, I watched your videos numerous times for reviews, you will be missed.
RIP, thank you for your commitment to sim racing. You will be missed by everyone

Rest in peace man, we'll miss you.
Rip man....been looking for you. My condolences to your family
I feel like not using VR with motion is really taking away from the experience. Maybe motions not for everyone but I find it absolutely amazing. When you feel legitimate fear because you're about to wreck, you're getting closer to real.
Or your rigs turned way too high lol
RIP mate. You were a great member of the simracing community. You will be forever remembered
