- The brutes of halo are, as their name implies, brutish creatures who resemble bears with an attitude to match. But what morphological characteristics do they have that make them such a foreboding enemy? Lets jump into their lore and find out!
Thanks for watching Roanoke Gaming and I hope you enjoy Halo Lore | Morphology of the Jiralhanae (Brutes) | Biology, History, Covenant Role, and Breakdown

If brutes are that powerful, I even have more respects for elites. The fact that they can competitively fight against monsters is somewhat mind-bobbling.
Elites are way more intelligent than the Brutes and far superior tacticians. As Rtas Vadum said during the battle of Installation 00 when he was told the Brute fleet outnumbered them 3:1 "Then it is an even fight."
czcams.com/video/PfN3KlF6yp8/video.html *Eckhartsladder* did a match up of *Brute vs Krogan* . Very interesting video. A channel you might also like
Boris Johnson On job I appreciate the gesture. But I saw it already. My favorite brute centered video done by eckhartsladder is the brute vs the wookie. It really puts their raw, brute (😁) strength in perspective.
And to think the flood are even worse than that.
I'd like to see Ripa Moremeee compared to a brute
Nothing like a spartan laser won’t fix
or well place rocket!
Or just stick 'em.
Jiralhanae and Cure i don’t know, the rookie from halo: odst and his squad seemed to manage just fine.
Jiralhanae and Cure, we should assume the cov. forces in new mombase were weak troops meant to temporarily fortify and secure locations behind their own frontlines. The ODSTs sent were a special pick team for a certain job by ONI, we can safely assume they would have been perfect candidates for the spartan III program, maybe even SII. However you could play through Halo 3: ODST more realistically on legendary difficulty.
@@philrob8994 they actually did end up in the Spartan 4 program
The brutes in Halo 2 were really strong bullet sponges and they barely even had armor on, imagine fighting a banished brute with the really heavy armor they have on, i imagine they would come in a pack of like five and act as a mini-boss like the hunters
Welllllll look who decided to show up after ignoring my friend request on Discord! lol

Ok now i want to see a Brute fist fight a Librarian from metro
that would be a pretty cool fight. My money is on brute though. A librarian is probably at max 800 pounds. A brute can be almost double that
I want to see a Brute fist fight an Adeptus Astartes (Warhammer40K Space Marine).

If I remember correctly, the Spiker in particular (the main weapon you talked about) uses similar technology to T'au pulse weapons from 40k. The magazine contains a set of ferrous slugs, which are mechanically fed into the "chamber", which is either a magnetic coil or rail, where it's induction heated to near its melting point and then fired, drawing it out into a spike as it's fired.
You do biology, I do weapons. Keep up the awesome vids, I'm always watching for your uploads and I'm eager to learn more!
That would make sense to me actually, because after they fire they are red hot! thanks for the info man!
Roanoke Gaming No problem! Thanks for replying! If you ever need info on weapons again, I'll gladly be of any assistance I can be. I'm as interested in weapons and technology in fictional universes as you are the biology of the other species in them!
you should join the discord bro! we have a weapons section where people talk about that stuff, and I eventually want to do lore on the weapons of the covenant so it would be easier to reach you there!
Roanoke Gaming I just did! Though, I must warn you I don't use it often...I assume the gun nut section?
@Eric Pope I mean it is a fantasy universe
The brutes are one of my favorite members from the covenant. They seem like the only ones vicious enough to be on par with elites and Spartans
agreed, while not THE most intelligent, they are definitely still a force to be reckoned with!
@@RoanokeGaming It’s not that their less intelligent they very much just are. But their natural aggression can easily get the better of them. Basically imagine an entire race that naturally has anger issues
If the brutes are customer to an atmosphere with several times more oxygen than earth, they should technically become extremely exhausted as soon as the do anything at all in an atmosphere such as ours. chances are that they might even die from suffocation
they should unless they are given some sort of supplement in the covenant army, which is possible, that has a great affinity for pulling oxygen out of the air
Roanoke Gaming Your hypothesis on the dinosaurs is extremely wrong. During the Cretaceous and Jurassic Periods, earth had 10% oxygen. Ice cores from the arctic confirm this. Dinosaurs were monstrous in size because of their. Hollow bones. Think about a chicken which has really small legs and wings for its body. Yes their bones are easy to break but think about a mammal of similar size vs similar weight.
Both will have much much more bone mass than a chicken.
Hollow bones for dinosaurs is the equivalent of titanium vs steel. Meaning if the mass is the same, there would be less weight and more tensile strength compared to steel/regular bone.
Caleb Reynolds Not Sauropods, you got to be kidding...no way animal can support themselves with that size and bone density
Alex T. You’re believing hollow bones to be weak, when they are far from it.
Again, it’s the equivalence of titanium vs steel. Same tensile strength, but very different weights.
Alex T. The actual holes in hollow bones more or less reduce the volume but keep the surface area the same.
Surface area can be roughly equated to strength (used to act upon other objects and to hold yourself up), while volume can roughly be equated to dead weight.
That’s it you want to look at it from a square-cube law perspective.
You did say Doi-sac correctly
YES! Thank god haha
Homo-Jiralhanae = SPARTA
Doisac. Doiiiiiisac. Doisac. They could have named it anything else. But they named it Doisac.

Roanoke Gaming 1:42 now say this one with me. Ma- nga- lek- go- lo. Mgalekgolo. Not mega lekgolo.
In the second level of Halo 3 a Brute Captain can be heard saying, "Ah, a fresh scent. Spread out, track it down." I believe this supports your hypothesis about theyre hunting by smell.
Brutes: If bears could walk and had a human brain...scary!
Now this is how jacked i want Isaac clark to be in the next Dead Space! Kicking Nechromorph Behind!
well maybe a neanderthal brain!
A very intelligent and angry Neaderthal
Jiralhanae are absolute powerhouses. They're already physically tough enough to simply IGNORE standard UNSC gunfire for a few moments, and when they berserk?
THEY BECAME EVEN TOUGHER AND MORE PAIN RESISTANT!
Firing into a berserking Jiralhanae's face will do little more than piss it off until it finally dies from blood loss.
Brutes are in every sense of the word beasts
Exactly!
I remember there being an animation where a brute rips a marine's arm or leg with no effort. I wonder why the devs didn't implement that.
While rated mature, I don't think they wanted a gears of war game on their hands haha
Yeah. Don’t wanna look like you’re copying gears of war yknow
Problems with rigging skeletons. The Drone itself has a pretty intensive explosion rig.
Gore
Considering they would have evolved on a planet with higher gravity, their height adaptations make sense. A longer lever is more efficient (can generate more force easily), and bones and joints are basically levers. Longer bones would also allow for longer muscles and greater muscle cross-sectional area, further increasing force output and their ability to withstand higher gravity.
I think the misconception that higher gravity would produce shorter creatures come from the fact that astronauts become “taller” in space. This is because the very low gravity reduces the compression on the skeletal system, adding a small amount of length to the body.
However, this isn’t really an adaptation to this environment so much as it is a consequence of it. If a human were born in space or on a considerably low gravity planet and brought back to earth, they would be too weak to function. Why? Because their bones and muscles wouldn’t have had nearly the amount of stimulation they would have received on earth.
Bone and muscle are highly adaptive to force stimuli, and if there basically is no stimulus they wouldn’t have the stimulus to grow to normal sizes. That being said, it would more likely be that such a person would not develop properly at all, not just being shorter and weaker, but dysfunctional. They would most likely have to be exposed to a different level of gravity over a longer period of time for adaptations to be permanent or functional.
well in theory it should, because while a larger lever is better the issue remains it puts more stress on the lever as well, and when working with organic material that's not always a good thing!
NERRRRD
Technically, higher gravity CAN, actually, result in a proportionately shorter, stockier build while muscle mass and bone density would proportionately increase. This could, possibly, mean that if a population lived their entire lives in a lower gravity world, they might become even taller with proportionately less muscle mass and bone density. The Expanse explored this realistically and, on my end, I have my own story I'm writing which explores these things.
One of my aliens is shorter than the average human by a few inches overall and has denser bones and stronger muscles because their gravity is noticeably higher than Earth's. The difference in gravity isn't so high Humans can't survive, but they will notice it and entire populations of Humans would adapt to it over time, probably resulting in a similar build to the native population. One thing I am definitely planning on using at some point is a confrontation between both races with the Humans finding out that even the females of this race are all physically strong enough to give Human men a run for their money and the alien men being proportionately stronger than their females (because they are physiologically similar to Humans and can almost pass for them with only subtle external differences in features and a few relatively minor differences in anatomy and sensory differences... they are meant to be a related species and neither race knew other existed).
Ah, nothing like waking up to a lore video. I guess you could say I'm living the life.
glad you like the lore bro!
Necromorphs vs flood that's very intresting seeing that they can only be defeated one way well for a bit
Agreed!
The arbiter from Halo Wars has to be as big as a brute right? Ripa Moramee is huge after all.
UndeadStorm Blade Well, since Ripa is essentially Tychus he probably is and he's also probably a convict in armor.
UndeadStorm Blade that dude was a fucking tank
Some Elites have been known to be as tall as brutes! but its more an exception rather than the rule
Ripa is only 8’2 ( 4 inches taller Thel Vadam and other average sized elites) he isn’t actually very tall for species. Tartarus, Atriox and most brutes seem to be about 9ft, with Decimus being bigger likely 10ft.
MrReyno Tanks he'd still stomp any brute dumb enough to get in his way
I wanna play as a Brute.
Master chief: close enough haha
You're right :D
Same I've been wanting it for years now. Imagine a new invasion mode with playable Brutes!
Wrd me to
I fucking love Halo! Can’t wait for Halo: Infinite honestly. Hope they bring back the brutes again, well, ig they did since in Halo Wars 2, the brutes did take over and now call themselves “The Banished”.
Looking at how Halo Wars 2 and Halo 5 ended, I suspect that we will meet the Banished, the Covenant, the Forerunners, and the UNSC all on the ARK. 343i has a lot to live up to, but it should be great
They have a lot of potential to make a great game, just depends on how lazy they feel, and if Microsoft doesn’t force them to release a game early again.
@@elf-lordsfriarofthemeadowl2039 dont forget the flood, and they probably wont just dump the promethians (even though a lot of people probably want them too) but I think if they design them right they can be fun to fight and they shouldn't dump them.
If they have a radically higher O2 level in their atmosphere, wouldn’t that present significant problems breathing elsewhere?
Maybe their shoulderpads have intravenous O2, a mechanical '3rd lung.' Would be cool, but isn't in game.
2nd theory: Their homeworld had deep valleys and high plateaus, and Jiralhane had to function both in high- and low-oxygen atmospheres to thrive.
Dinosaurs could only grow that large for 3 reasons:
1. Hollow bones.
2. An avian respiratory system (much more efficient).
3. They didn't produce nearly as much heat as mammals. A mammal would cook itself from the inside if it grew as large as some dinosaurs.
Chris Hakala
Wooly (Wully?) Mammoth.
You have impressive intelligence :)
Dinosaurs did not have hollow bones. I mean, we find their fossils right? Bird fossils exist, but far rarer due to them being hollow.
Early dinosaurs possessed a secondary respiratory system which would of allowed them to survive a post-Great Dying world. These secondary airsacs would not be lost in evolution and would be repurposed to make themselves fuck-off huge, bigger than anything else could ever safe for the blue whale.
As for the schmuck who commented "woolly mammoths", they most likely had seasonal pillosity.
@@bundleoffuck2986 Lived in an ice age.
Rogue Pylon Ah right. I’m a fucking idiot.
Man I love how the Covenant species all have long, nearly alien names.
Great video as always, keep up the good work, been playing Halo since the very first and have mostly loved each moment.
It does make them sound cool! then there is "Human" haha
That would make sense why their armour looks like giant slabs of metal - they would require that armour to offset the negatives of operating in low gravity environments. We make armour light sure to our frame only really supporting 100lbs for extended periods (able even that's awful), whereas they would require that weight to function long term without bone or muscle degradation (as it does is in low gravity), which means covering themselves in about half a ton of armour plate would only feel like their "normal" weight to operate under. Which is insane, as the armour could be twice of that or more.
This was a very well put together video and was great to watch. Keep up the great work

3:11 I’ve heard it theorized that humans born and raised on lower gravity planets would be taller than those born on earth. Perhaps the same applies to Jiralhanae born on exoplanets with less gravity than their homeworld.
The brute's are my favorite!
The funniest thing is that tall creatures should develop at low gravity places. High gravity means smaller size.
Perhaps they fill an elephant or mammoth like niche on their home world. Meaning had they been on a more earth-like world it would make them even taller.
I really enjoyed this video, I never knew this much about the Brutes! Only the Elites, Grunts, Kig-Yar, etc. I learned more about the Mgalekgolo from you and now the Brutes. I really enjoy learning more about them.
I am glad you liked hearing about them bro!
That's the only thing I like about the brutes is there savage strength.
Ironically that's what humans hate in the halo universe haha
Roanoke Gaming I think there's that clip that shows an elite getting his neck caught in the palm of the brutes hand and the brute literally applys little pressure and he killed the elite, it had me dumbfounded, like dam fam! With one hand!
Brutes really are brutes! massively powerful creatures
Soviet who Cuts Most likely.
Roanoke could you do a series on high level elite or other covenant commanders like you did with gears of war just a suggestion
I may be able to in the future!
I like how both the elite and the brutes have a scared weapons to them:
Elites: Energy Sword
Brutes: Gravity hammer
The way they past down their weapons is weird well for the elites anyway, them and there "swordsman genes" can they pls explain that lore better. For the brutes its just if any of the younger can beat the old chieftain in combat the hammer is yours.
Elite Swordsmen caste is a combination of nobility, like dukes and counts - as well as purebred animal breeding.
Long ago in their history, Sanghelios culture decided to prioritize skill-at-arms in their leaders, even beyond practicality, and across generations.
Seems they inherently follow and prioritize skill and finesse, so a class bred for combat is also a class bred for ruling.
my favorite thing about the scene with Atriox defying the elites to form the banished is the large amount of diversity among his pack brothers, having them be visually distinct does a lot to make them seem more like people with identities and lives, rather than heartless beasts
it also shows how far everything has come when one species doesn't look like only three of them exist haah
Hands down my favorite Halo faction I just hope one day we can get playable Brutes, maybe in a new invasion mode or reverse Firefight. Great video.
So imagine brute spartan's dear god that would be a nightmare inducing sight

NUMBER 15 BURGER KING FOOT LETTUCE
THE LAST THING YOU WOULD WANT ON YOUR BURGER KING BURGER IS SOMEONES FOOT LETTUCE BUT THAT MAY ACTUALLY BE WHAT YOU GET
If I may be so bold as to suggest a second reason for the height: I was curious about if it was necessary to provide enough places to anchor the muscles to the bone so they don't rip off trying to exert their full strength in such high gravity?
it could be, but at what point does the amount of muscle you have become to heavy for other muscle to move it? surely there must be a physical limit for a bipedal animal
Probably around the same point that the square cube law comes into play, but I might be wrong, I'm a law student, my single year of college biology doesn't really qualify me to be an expert or anything. Maybe we need to find what the equivalent square cube law is for muscle?
Also, wouldn't it depend on the manner in which muscle is constructed? (if for instance there is an issue of density or of energy efficiency versus terrestrial examples)
Another thought that occurs, is that the bones themselves must be somehow naturally reinforced to survive such gravity, both the chemical composition and the actual chemical structure must be different in some way to both survive the gravity, and the strength those muscles can put out, but the biochemistry for these differences is beyond me.
Theoretical papers, anyone?
Good video as always really deep analysis.
Glad you liked it bro!
You should also do the lore and biological discription of the volitiles in dying light. There's something about them that still is a mystery. the fact that they can talk or evolve into smarter apex predators makes them very unique zombies or mutants or whatever they are.
You know after making so many videos of halo and titanfall, I have to ask, how would a spartan do in the Titanfall universe, and a Pilot in the Halo universe?
A Spartan would brutalize in the titanfall universe. A pilot would fair a little better than your average ODST in the Halo Universe
Looking at the Halo universe you can already see something similar similar to the titans in the halo wars games with the cyclopse and in Halo 4/5 with the Mantis. So I would guess that both the Humans and Covenant have already experience in fighting bipedal mechs. The pilot on his own (with his jumppack of course) would stil be a thread to the more basic units like marines, grunts or jackals, but I think against Elites or Spartans he would also have a hard time, because of the technological advancement of the covenant and the augmentations and armor of the Spartan.
A Spartan in the Titanfall universe on the other hand would probably do fine as long as he isn't on an open field against multiple titans. His Speed and reflexes are superior to that of a Pilot as far as I know and his armor can handle a few hits too. The only problem I see for a Spartan is when he has to fight multiple titans without much cover, because he can only really outclass them when he is near them and take advantage of the relative lack of speed of the titans compared to him, and the combined fire power titans have.
I would stil love to see them both fight tho :D
Xeno mammals that sounds cool 😎 Man I love biology😎 also I assume if a brute and elite thought a brute would win since desisimus was able to snap an elite’s neck with ease in the atriox’s origin story cutscene
I like the idea of that name as well! maybe one day we will find some!
Roanoke Gaming let’s hope so!!!
Yeah that cutscene is so poorly made regarding Elites and Brutes capabilities and the choreography. It's awful, unless these Brutes are all Blood Stars like Atriox was they would've been butchered. Only skilled Elites who've earned the right to use swords can have them. And Elites are NOT tiny little frail droopy flat faced things with little girl shoulders, they're 8'6, snake headed, muscular, and extremely skilled warriors.
Back at it again with that quality content
Thanks bro! Glad you liked it!
You always make amazing videos
I think an evolutionary explanation for their height could be tall flora on their home world Doi-sac. Tall grass and trees that don't have lower hanging branches may have benefited taller jiralhanae over shorter ones, increasing the average height of the gene pool.
It make me intrigued. In the Halo lore, Human at one time in the long past became the second most power race. How is that possible? There are like probably the weakest specie in comparison to other halo species. I wonder if human had Napoleon syndrome because of their small stature. There are like midget compared to elite or even forerunner.
Size of a creature isn't everything. Ingenuity and intelligence is what is key. Superior thinking has always overwhelmed superior force.
True, but elite are smart too.
Ancient humans used to be taller and stronger. When humanity was reseeded on Earth by the forerunners, they made us shorter, weaker and less intelligent
Curse those forerunner.
Just how tall? Maybe men are about 7 to 8ft and women 6 to 7ft?
Thanos vs the flood, thanos has all but two infinity stones which he has to get from a flood planet, can thanos and his army be able to take the infinity stones, or would the flood overwhelm them. Thanos doesn't have the soul and time stone.
Thanos FTW bro...only because he can bend reality
Roanoke Gaming he would be able to reality warp the entire flood from the planet? Doesn't he need the soul stone to do that shit. 🤣🤣🤣
Okay a video of thanos needing 3 infinity stones then to make it more fair. 🤣🤣🤣
Soviet who Cuts if he sends his army first he has time to get the other stones, but if thanos goes in by himself he is fucked, especially if he doesn't know about the flood.
@@RoanokeGaming if its pre ring fireing, the flood can bend reality too by use of precursor neuro physics since they have planets worth of key minds with inconceivable processing power.

It's glorious bro
I don't know man they left a pretty big impression on halo wars 2 the cinematic cut scenes.I would bet them coming back in halo infinity meaning if they don't I will be pretty upset and dislike anything halo infinity. Also Isn't that the name of the space ship in halo 5 like the fuck...............
It will be interesting to see!
Captain of the Bleeding Roses The ship is called Infinity. But the game is called Halo: Infinite
i mean in the banished, some of those brutes are super smart
They are more of an exception then the rule
There's just something about the brutes that I really like but can't exactly pinpoint, like the other Covenant species are much more unique in biology, but I just like the brutes for some reason.
You are fighting a space bear
An interesting thing about gravity and spaceflight is that a higher gravity results in an exponentially higher fuel requirement. According to NASA, if Earth had been 50% larger it would have been physically impossible for us to build a rocket capable of achieving escape velocity. As in not only would people never get to go to space, but there'd be no satellites or space-telescopes either.
On a related note, it's theorized that the larger super-Earths may be more likely to produce life than planets our size. So, it's actually possible that most aliens never leave their planet.
And if you know Korean, Jiralhanae takes on a different meaning than just a name

Hiya, I have recently found you on CZcams and I love all your videos and get hooked in them within minutes. I love your gears of war videos especially. Are you able to do more of those? For example on the queen or the lambent war against the locust please. I would love to see that
Yes! I plan on getting back into Gears after a short Hiatus, Look for the gunker in the near future!
Roanoke Gaming Yas, thank you. I can't wait for it 😄
They can't make contractions due to their translation devices.
interesting!
Destroy All Humans!
Roanoke Gaming oh I wanted quote this. Are intelligent to pliot vehicles. Plays halo 3 brute slams chopper into other chopper and they both die. Other time brute boosts off a cliff yes very intelligent lol.
We still waiting for that 2 hour of talking video
WAIT WHICH ONE NOW??
Roanoke Gaming ANY !
Really like your videos. Interesting and entertaining learning about lore and the science behind it at the same time. Your videos got me quite interested in Halo. PC gamer so other than the recent halo online, never played or learned about it.
Have you ever looked into Warframe? Though it doesn't have an insane amount of lore, what is there would be interesting to look deeper into. Just a thought, think you could make some good videos from it.
I am about to try out warframe here soon and see if I can get into it! Also I am glad You like the content bro!
I luv rowanoaks content
thanks man, are you trying to do the OwO thing? haha
I love this channel it is amazing the first time I watched you was when you where talking about the biology of necromorph slashers
thanks bro! I am glad you have enjoyed it that long!
Roanoke Gaming no problem bro
Roanoke Gaming I have a question did the brutes make the gravity hammer because I don't know if I missed that part in the video
I don't think the brutes did, I will have to research but I am fairly certain the covenant made it for them
Roanoke Gaming it would make since that the covenant did but then again who would have made atriox weapon since he's not part of the covenant and why is it like the main bad guy in the second halo. Like how would they be able to make that tractor beam thing to grab people
I can’t help but feel like most people portal the Brutes as well... Brutes. Savages who are too aggressive and not smart enough to have been able to get to where they were out without help. This is a reminder that the Brutes were also cunning and strong as a species, and that they could build advanced, sophisticated technologies and battle strategies without outside influences. Thank you for reminding us that the Jirlahane are just as powerful/deadly as the Sangheili.
Brute shot aka The Meta's weapon or as Donut puts it "a kickass broom"
Brute punches chief, chief flys backwards, chief immediately counter punches and sends brute to oblivion.
I always liked the brutes in the games, always were cool enemies
29k lol you were less than 1k not that long ago!!! Congratulations
Thanks man! I am certainly getting there!
some how I found this gem of a channel in "trending," god works in mysterious ways.
