  • Hasan revisited the popular Facebook group Subtle Asian Traits to answer more questions, but this time he had some help from his parents Najme and Seema. Watch as Hasan's parents spill stories on what Hasan was like as a kid, when they've been most proud and most disappointed with him, what they think of his career now, and what it was like for the two of them raising a family as immigrants in America. They also reveal which episode of Patriot Act they enjoyed the most and which topic they would cover if they got to host the show.

I think it's more so the fact that they can't properly explain or brag about it to family/friends.
And it's not necessarily a bad thing to do that, it's cultural as a way to show how proud they are.
While I'm sure they're proud, it's .. hard to explain what he does and not everyone "buys" it or understands.

They just care you go to college and get s degree of some sort but they don’t expect you to be an engineer or doctor. They don’t pressure their children to go to college either, and if they don’t then they better get s job and help pay bills. I know it’s not all Hispano families but it’s true one thing I admire of my Asian friends and family.

I haven't cried this hard in a long time. Watching Hasan talk to his mother, and listening as she expressed her genuine emotion about her son hit closer to home than I expected. I lost my mother 22 years ago when I was 19 years old. She was the person I strove the hardest to be like. She was always 100% open and honest with me. She died suddenly 2 weeks before my first child was born, and losing her so soon and at a life changing moment left me broken for years. I wish I could sit with her and listen to her describe the moments that she was most proud of me. I'd give anything just to have a moment like this with her just once more.

Mahedi Hasan make sure that you tell her that as often as you can. My mother was loved, and respected by everyone in my neighborhood. In elementary school my classmates would cling to her on field trips when she came along. She was everything that aspired to in life. I was inconsolable for years after her death. I lost all direction, and ceased to care anything except my newborn son. I made sure to tell him all about her as he grew up, and surrounded him with photos of her throughout our home. I still haven't gotten over the pain of never seeing my mother cradling my son in her arms. There are times when I think about it in public, and immediately start crying. Its happened on trains, buses, restaurants, at work; pretty much everywhere. I don't care who sees me when it happens, and I don't care what they think. Seeing Hasan's mom speak to her love, and admiration for him is the closest I'll ever get to hearing it from my mother once more. Your mom deserves to know how much you love her. Don't ever let a day go by without telling her. Thank you for the kind words, btw.

Neelanjana Chatterjee that isn't something to feel awkward about. Your love for your father, and the pain you experienced over his passing isn't a shameful expression. It's a manifestation of the bond you shared while he was here with you. My mother was my rock. She was a lioness to me, both regal and noble. By her example I learned to always be open and honest with my children, never behaving as if I didn't make mistakes in my early life, yet always expressing my pride and admiration in their accomplishments. My father is still alive, and I never let a day go by without reminding him that I appreciate all the work he put into keeping me and my brothers on a straight path. We lived in a very rough neighborhood in Brooklyn, but I feared my father far more than I feared any of the kids in my neighborhood. He and my mother demanded the best from us and it kept us out of trouble. If you still have your mother make sure you let her know that she is appreciated. And never hang your head when you're remembering what your father meant to you.

      Hello
Something I have been in search for quite sometime is a connection with somebody that goes beyond vanity. It's very hard to do in this day and age. People can be, somewhat very superficial.
On my quest to achieve this I have learnt a lot about human nature. It seems to me that those who are not given traits such as beauty or being wealthy are some of the nicest, kindest and generous people. While the "gorgeous" and well off seem to be the most arrogant and greedy people out there.
Of course that's not to say there aren't beautiful kind people out there. I've been in the process of change for a while now and I have made some decent changes but don't you just hate it when people can't let go of your past mistakes.
I saw your profile and it intrigued me. I wanted to learn more about who you are and what type of path you would like on in life. Can we talk?

This was so beautiful, especially when the parents talked of their dreams and how they gave them up for their children.
I think it is so fascinating how his father was interested in pursuing Bollywood and politics in his youth, and his son is an entertainer and political commentator - yet seemed surprised at his father's youthful passions. It made me feel like his father's dreams were not abandoned, but the half of him that lives o in his son was able to experience them.

I am not sure why you made 'free samples' and 'brown parents' so related ? In my closest Costco (about 5 minutes from my work), there are more white and others sampling those free items (staying in line is a common sight) while most brown people (excluding me) don't bother. There are many who go to Costco in their lunch break just for snacking. IMHO, your statement is very generalized and stereotype. Anyway, I may be wrong and you didn't mean it that way. This was the most wholesome thing I've seen in a while...you can talk about Indian / Asian family stereotypes (I'm an east European guy, and many similar stereotypes exist here as well) - and this family is one that definitely falls into many of them :) - but this thing here that we saw is also the purest example of what a family should be, and is more and more rare in today's world - dedicated, loving, and always worrying parents, true to the role they chose, sacrificing and putting in the effort to raise children who are good people, and honest, hard-working children who pursue their dreams, and recognize and have love for how their parents enabled them to do so...I have huge respect for Hasan after this - he might be a bad-ass and successful comedian, a sharp and unapologetic critic, but even more because he is, together with all that, still simply a good child to his parents. Much love for the Minhaj family, very happy for the deserved success, you guys are awesome! Everyone else - be good people and make your parents proud in your own way!

I do the gesture like that one day, and my friend was annoyed and she said
"What's wrong with your hands? You get Hasan Minhaj Syndrome?"
Never in 22 years of my life i heard about that syndrome
