The same lack of grit that resulted in a league leading # of OT games in the regular season was on display. If they don't find it, the Bruins will repeat last year's epic choke.

I honestly believe the Leafs have had performances that outclassed the Bruins multiple times in this series, but their defensive structures, inconsistent goaltending, inability to really push through Boston's defense, and BIZARRELY awful special teams has kept them from winning games that they really should have won. Yeah, the Leafs came out swinging in this game, but it's not like Boston didn't return the favour as the game went on.
This was really a battle between Joseph Woll and Jeremy Swayman. Woll brought in a rock solid performance that saved the Leafs a couple times, but Swayman was playing out of his god damn mind as well. Without him, I don't think the game makes it to overtime for the Bruins. Whatever takeaways there were from Game 5, the loss was absolutely not on him. Honestly, all three goals in this game really can't be blamed on either goalie.
The Leafs were also taking a lot of REALLY stupid penalties that, with their weak defense and penalty kill, they just couldn't afford to be taking earlier in the series. Thankfully, it seams like they've really locked that down in this game, so if they continue to have the game at mostly even strength, the Leafs will continue to pressure the Bruins (not many hockey teams where you'd rather be playing 5v5 than have a man advantage, but the Leafs are just really weird like that).
And there was one more factor that I think helped the Leafs: the absence of Matthews.
    Hear me out.
Matthews is the best player on the Leafs, along with Nylander. The Leafs know this, and every other team in the league knows this, ESPECIALLY Boston. Any playoff team in the league is gonna be dedicating SOME part of their strategy to shutting him down. Which can work; Matthews is a goal scorer, not a wizard in speed and skating like MacKinnon or McDavid. When he's not around, the Leafs KNOW they have to step up the rest of their game to make up for it, AND the Bruins have to account for the fact that keeping Matthews at bay is no longer a part of their game plan. The Leafs play bizarrely good when Matthews isn't in the line-up, probably with the motivating factor of "We don't have the best goal scorer in the league to bail us out anymore, so we gotta get our shit together and lock this game down." That shouldn't be underestimated.

Zdeno Chara, great guy, could give ya a thousand reasons why I loved everything about his play, but the last season or two before he went to the Capitals ,… every time he got the puck on his stick I’d cringe that he was gonna cough it up and way more often than not he did ,… I feel the same way about Pasta now !

  • @user-km7mg5hx9l

I dont know if id agree with pasta. 2g and 2 assists in 5 games. Really last game the Bruins played terrible as a unit. He isnt playing bad and if you compare playoff stats from previous years hes about on par with production. Austin Matthews only has 1g and 2 ass in 4 games played and lost 3 of those games. Yet eveyone is making his loss to be a big deal. Im fine with Pasta play as long as the rest of the team shows up. This team all season hasnt relied on just one person, its been a well oiled machined unit. I just hope next game they just show up for 60 minutes regardless on whos on the scoreboard.

Bear in mid Sheldon Keefe is trying to save his job by benching Samsonov. Sammy is not their No. 1 and his trip to the minors showed it. He has likely played his last game as a leaf and good riddance.
Sheldon Keefe may be behind the bench for the last time too. Good riddance on that also.

Do you really think the bruins are going to go up to toronto and win ..for 3rd time in a week?? I dont.... start Ullmark , why? give him a chance to be a hero, it would be great for the panther series, and if not and he loses? you have swayman for home gm 7, and he is fresh NOT coming off a 2cd loss to leafs , now they solved him , he will have his tail between his legs, if he goes to ullmark in gm 7 then ...its the same thing as last year in reverse!
If im coaching im telling my team tonights the night! but when I close the door to my office , im thinking about gm 7. So a good coach thinks about ALL scenarios. Hey the Leafs switched goalies and look what happened? we have the better goalies right? so use them BOTH. thats what this 55 yaer old guy thats loved the bruins since 1978 and palyed 35 years of hockey thinks..peace E-Diddy out!

As a leaf fan i see no reason why my team will win. Our guy Matthews doesnt want to play because hes sick. Not physically but mentally the bruins know how to make him play like he a was a minor league guy. So hang on its coming. @tonylloy327 Před 15 dny

As a Habs fan, I sincerely wish your Bruins the best of luck in game 6/7. It might sound crazy, but as much as the Habs and Bruins have always been historical rivals, the ONE thing we have in common (besides Patrice Bergeron and Raymond Bourque and Chris Nilan, ha!) is our shared hatred for the ugly arrogance of 'Leafs Nation'.
Both B's fans and Habs fans at least have respect for other teams and their players and fan bases, and recognize talent and effort and give "credit where credit is due"...like you do here with Joseph Woll. This is *not* what Leafs Nation does, at least not in this 'core four' era. If the Leafs lose a game, in their opinion it's not because the other team was better, it's only because their entitled Leafs didn't play very well, or the refs were against them, or some such BS.
So, anyway, as I did in 2011 when your B's won the Cup against Vancouver, I'll be cheering for the Bruins over the 'Canadian' team. I won't lie, if you make it to the Finals this year, and face up against Edmonton, I'll be cheering for the Oilers. But other than that match-up, GO BRUINS!!!! Classy team, classy management, classy coaching, classy tradition. 👍👍
