Sights & Sounds | The 2021 Barkley Marathons

  • Some call it impossible. Notoriously difficult, the Barkley Marathons is the ultimate test for world-class ultra runners looking to explore the extreme limits of their physical and mental abilities. In March 2021, 35 runners returned to Wartburg, Tennessee, to chase five loops and search for hidden books in the rigorous wilderness of Frozen Head State Park.
    Every Barkley has its own set of challenges, and this year's race was no different: frigid temperatures, dense fog, torrential rain and an early start time made 2021 one of the most difficult Barkley's in recent history. Despite a heavily talented field of world-class runners including Jamil Coury, Courtney Dauwalter, Maggie Guterl and many more, only two runners (Jared Campbell and Luke Nelson) would go on to achieve the "Fun Run." There were no finishers.
    Enjoy the sights, sounds and stories from this year's race, which returned to Frozen Head State Park after the event was cancelled in 2020 due to COVID-19. A sincere and special thank you to Jamil Coury for making this opportunity possible, and to Lazarus Lake for allowing me to share the Barkley Marathons experience.

      @@marius8648 yeah I watched his video where he explained why he decided no to come this year. Even if you'd completely disregard the risk about covid, financially it'd be crazy expensive to do it so I completely understand. But I believe it 100% if Kevin says that he was greatly missed!

      @@michaelfedora I haven't watched this yet but I was wondering why it would be expensive? Do you mean running it? Don't the participants pay an entry that should cover costs ? Looks like pure torture. Im interested.

    • @michaelfedora
      @michaelfedora Před 3 lety +11

      @@harrygrimley4352huge cost risk because of compulsory hotel quarantine when returning to Canada from States which would be at least $2000 (three days hotel quarantine) or 14 days if tested positive for covid on return (so $10k+). If not allowed on the return plane to Canada due to possible positive test he'd have to pay for US health care and I don't even want to start guessing how much that would be and as far as I know could be in tens of thousands (if not hundreds of thousands, I'm not even kidding). I'm in the UK and same as Canada we have a free health care. Hopefully we can see Gary next year when everything calms down!

    A brilliant piece of work absolutely capturing the essence of the Barkley. For me, with many events claiming "the toughest....." this is easily the actual toughest. So many incredible athletes that don't make it show just how extreme this unique and eccentric race is. I am in awe of anyone who lines up to start. And of the legend that is Lazarus. Great film thank you.
