The 2023 Barkley Marathons Documentary

- The Barkley Marathons are a race unlike any other. With over 100 miles of wild terrain, and twice the elevation of climbing and descending Mt. Everest from sea level, it's a race that expects runners to fail. In 38 years, only 15 runners have completed the Barkley Marathons, but that doesn't stop hundreds of athletes from applying for entry every year. This year, I was lucky enough to see the race in person as I documented Joe McConaughy's first attempt at one of the most challenging races in the world. The film also features athletes Aurélien Sanchez, John Kelly, Karel Sabbe, Damian Hall, Jared Campbell, and Jasmin Paris.

Who is here today bc of Jasmine! 🎉
Yepp, mee
A couple people only. 😢
👍🏼
🙋🏼♀️🎉
🖐
Rewatching this after just having had the wonderful news that Jasmin Paris became the first woman to complete the Barkley Marathons.
me too!! She is incredible! :)
Really don't know why she and all bother, the times are insanely slow.
@ianhope3203 - What? What's slow about her time? You do know the combined elevation is like climbing the Mount everest TWICE, right?
@@ianhope3203 I couldn't agree more. . . . . . . . you my friend "do not know "
Same ❤
Any time I see a doc put together around Barkley I’m watching it.
Same. Thanks for checking ours out!
Me too. Outside of all the camera flashes at the finishes... I hope other arrangements are in the following years. That strobe light effect was awful.
Me too, 1 minute in and Laz already making it awesome lol
100%
Same….100 %
Jasmin Paris is officially a finisher 2024!! 🎉
That's what brought me here! I even watched the first documentary again.
Yeah, and very very close.
How Sanchez after all that running had the sense to push thru that missing book and still finish is just amazing. Great job.
Couldn't agree more
They all had smart watches on. When did that change?
@@tinsoldier671 looks more like the standard digital watches they get at the start. Aurelian looked like he had a wrist compass on the other wrist.
Imagine not finding book on this course it’s so easy to do that, how do you think the book is missing ?
What about future races ? Everything you are off map and don’t find book? They think book is lost too?
absolutely amazing, i would have been running round in circles all night
@@pilotfield
For those who don’t recognize any of these names, these aren’t just a bunch of crazy people who can run far, these are literally some of the most elite ultra runners in the world pulling up to a forest in Tennessee.
It was a stacked field!
And what I love most is Keith staying true to the Barkley's spirit, tweeting descriptions like "nondescript guy" and "small European woman" instead of names
Tbh I think they would appreciate being called "crazy people who can run far"
love it
what sort of times would these elites run a regular major marathon?
Aurélien Sanchez is insane. A Barkley virgin that finishes on the first try, even beating John Kelly. What a madlad.
He was just so steady throughout. I remember him leaving for lap 4 in a sprint and people at camp were wondering why he did that. Hard to argue with now. Thanks for watching!
John Kelly understandably knackered by the end and Karel in a scary state of exhaustion, whilst Aurelien looked like he could’ve went another lap 🤣
Absolute warriors man
I suspect that he must have spent some serious time with French orienteers (who are among the best in the world) in order to be able to his navigation so well, particularly being able to decide on that last loop that, "Yes, I am definitely in the right spot, so the book must have been stolen!" and go on full speed without letting the worry affect him.
Spoiler alert!!!!!
all three are finishers no one beat anyone at the end
This is, in my opinion, the best Barkley doc since The Race That Eats Its Young. Very well done.
Thank you! I love all of the previous Barkley docs and my goal was to hopefully add to what they've already done. Glad you enjoyed it!
The one made by Karel Sabbe himself, "Out There - A Journey to the Barkley Marathons" was great as well though :)
@@tortues I agree!
I am so glad they put this out. Don’t get me wrong. But this was way too short! I would’ve loved more time and coverage of individual runners like one the the past documentaries. What a race!!! Love everything about it
And it was REALLY a great YEAR for the barkley. I think the story of the race REALLY transforms what the docs end up becoming.
Man, the line about Karel talking to trash cans and being brought back in a police car was a side of the story I didn't know, holy hell that's funny. Absolute legend. Massive well done Joe, and thanks Michael for making such a great account, love any documentation of the Barkley and this one is beautiful.
Thanks so much! Yea it's a wild story but made his finish his year all that much greater. And now he's back on the PCT going after the FKT again. He doesn't stop!
Out talking to trash cans AND being able to finish. Nuts. Love it. Another great doc.
Someone called the police saying a "woman dressed as an indian" was talking to a trash can.
You Should watch his documentary on CZcams. It's him running 2023 barkley.
Seeing Aurelien's headlamp coming through the trail, and the base camp cheering him along..... tears man. Tears. It's so pure. I love humans.
Additionally, thank you Pilot Field for documenting this. I really enjoyed your work.
Thank you, Teddy! I really appreciate you taking the time to watch.
I agree @@teddymckinney4425 What an incredible accomplishment and great documentary telling the story well. Thanks to everyone for this.
for me I lost it when Karol collapsed at the cutoff. So many feels.
Me too!
He was defenitly right about the stories they would be telling for years. That hiker picking up the book was crazy. Why not just let it sit there for atleast an extra day? Even more amazing is that the runner had clarity to push through and not spend time dwelling on the missing book. Great doc and amazing group of people!
Agreed. Thanks for watching!
Especially considering it was his first attempt at the Barkley!
Crazy confidence in himself considering the circumstances. Truly a top finisher of all time.
Would think they would go back collect the left books from the forest after the race so it is just shitty for a local to ruin it basically since they knew about the race clearly. Just use a bit more brain Bruhh.😂
I am not even a trail runner and am obsessed with the Barkley.... Thank YOU for providing this coverage, and congrats to all those who attempt this.
Same. Thanks for watching!
Same here!
😂same here. Obsessed. So cool to see a Kiwi completed the race this year. But omg - just so thrilled for Jasmine.
😂same here. Obsessed. So cool to see a Kiwi completed the race this year. But omg - just so thrilled for Jasmine.
Great film. Aurélien finished first, despite going counter-clockwise during the 5th lap AND one of the books was missing. What a champ. The BM100 is the epitome of ‘you can do hard things’. Hope Joe tries again in 2024!
He's a stud. Excited to see what he does next. Thank you for watching!
“Live in the moment. Don’t think about what’s next because it’s gonna get worse.” Thanks Laz
The fact that this race is started by someone lighting a cigarette is just...fun.
Love how you just let us (the audience) 'be there' in the moment for Karel's finish. Excellently filmed and edited ✨️ Good luck to Joe on his next attempt!
Thank you for such a great comment. Karel created such a great moment, there wasn't much I could add to it!
37:06 it's like the freakin Pieta!!
And yet ANOTHER Barkley documentary that I am stoked to watch! This whole race is so damn fascinating.
I love all of the previous docs. Hope this adds to those!
I could never run one but I find them fascinating too.
Really great footage from this year's event. I was so honored to be a part of it all. It was genuinely such a great collection of performances this year. I have no doubt Joe will ultimately get his finish. -Fegy
Thanks Fegy! It was awesome getting to see you and John K operate. I hope it's not the last time!
Hey man I have to tell you that your story--that you told in the other documentary--is so inspiring. I showed that documentary to my clients when I worked in a men's inpatient treatment center for addiction and you touched them. You're amazing.
I cry every time I rewatch the documentary and see you finish. You are such an inspiration to me!
@@rashaskidid you tell them STAN I HAVE A DISEASE IM VERY SICK
Joe did the Appalachian Trail unsupported though. That is vastly different from doing it supported. Those two categories cannot be compared as they are vastly different. Joe still holds the FKT record for hiking the AT without any aid (which means he must carry all his own supplies and cannot even hitch a ride into town). Having personally met Stringbean out on the AT, I have a whole lot of respect for that guy! :)
Jasmin absolutely smashed it this year, watching this makes me emotional for her!
After seeing so much drama at the 60 hour mark go the other way, it was amazing to see someone finish just in the nick of time.
It was on everyone's minds. So happy that Karel pulled through!
"You are now the slowest Barkler ever" Lazarus is a savage😆
Watching this after Jasmine Paris made history
I would have been gutted for Sanchez if he'd have spent hours looking for that book & didn't finish. That race is so difficult most people only get one chance to finish it in their lives. So happy he pushed on & finished!
As someone who has literally watched everything there is on the Barkley, all I yearned for was more content. And finally, here it is. Amazing watch and truly moving to see such amazing athletes go the distance.
I'm right there with you. I wouldn't be surprised to see a couple more pop up from this years race. Thanks for checking ours out!
LOVED this POV from the Pilot Field crew. Really enjoyed Keith's tweets tied into the film, since thats the only point of reference us morals have during race week. So glad Karel finally got his finish and you were able to capture the moment in such fantastic fassion. Thank you for respecting the Barkley secrets, traditions, and working so well with the limitations. Well done!
Thank you for watching, Josh! And thank you for such a great comment. It was hard to imagine telling this year's story without including Keith's tweets. Feels like they hit a whole new gear this year. And the three finishers made my job easy. Each finish had its own energy, with Karel's being a perfect closer!
"... The weather looks promising... This could be a year when someone finishes..."
I love these Barkley documentaries, it sure is a special race. Thank you!
Thank you, Kristina!
Barkley docs NEVER EVER get old. Excellent work by all!
I love the "that was easy" buzzer that must be pushed to make it official. Awesome video. Amazing runners. Excellent narration and incredible footage. To see Karel at the end is so poignant. I just can't even imagine how hard even one loop would be. Thank you.
Amazing job. Setting an alarm in the middle of the night to refresh twitter frantically to see whether there would be any finishers, with a specific interest for Karel, was one of the tensest and most inspiring moments in sports so far this year. We got the occasional glimpses through Steven (crewing for Thomas, the other Belgian) but this finally gives a detailed account of what transpired in that moment. Thanks for capturing it, and immensely grateful for the Barkley as a continuing source of inspiration.
I know the feeling of following Keith's twitter feed and can't imagine being on that side of things for five loops this year. Thank you for watching!
Excellent film. I love a good Barkley doc, and this was a special one. Thank you for making this!
Thanks Cody! Felt very luck to be there this year. So many good things aligned.
ive watched them all but this is probably the best put together and quailty barkley marathon docos out there! well done!
Thank you! I love all of the previous docs, I'm glad this one can add to the greater Barkley story
Yesterday I drove out of Wartburg TN (camping) and I took in the view of daunting mountains at Frozen Head State Park. The people who attempt the Barkley Marathons and those who achieve it are a rare and fascinating breed of human. I have a special place in my heart for two time finisher John Kelly who is from Morgan County TN. Local. Aurelian Sanchez did looked damn good at the finish. So impressive. Karl. That guy totally gutted it out. Thank you for making this documentary! Can’t wait until next years race.
Thank you, Maya! It's really cool know that John is from the area, and at the same time, setting the standard for what has become a global event. I appreciate you waking the time to watch!
Unbelievable documentary, really good!. The entirety of Belgium was rooting for Karel, let me tell you. We're so proud of him :D
Thanks for watching! We're all pulling for him on the PCT currently
Being a Barley Finisher is probably the biggest accomplishment a person on earth can get, no one has ever heard of.
So true.
I think that going on Mount Everest unsupported is harder
I'm so proud of Karel!!! I watched a different Barkley Marathon doc focused on his first run and I was so inspired.
I can’t like this video enough. So well done. And such a great documentation of what some of us live for every year.
Thanks for watching, John!
So powerful and emotional scenes of the finishers. Really amazing!
FANTASTIC! Thanks for this!!
Thank you for documenting this
Great doc as always. thanks for sharing this journey.
Thanks Cameron!
I just learned about Barkley yesterday. Watched a documentary from years ago, and found yours today. Really well-made, and very entertaining to watch. You guys are warriors, Congrats!
This brought me to tears. Thank you for sharing it.
Thanks for making this, passionating as usual to follow these inspiring people always pushing further.
This was so well made. Thank you for capturing it for us. Not many even know it is a thing, but those that do greatly appreciate ya'll who go and document what you are allowed to.
Thanks for the shout out and thank you for watching!
Great video! Joe, Karel and John seem to always have the most amazing crews on board
Agreed! Getting to meet all of the crews was a highlight for me personally. A lot of Barkley veterans and folks who are just generally very supportive. Thanks for watching!
Such a fantastic documentary. Wow. Thank you ver much for sharing your work.
Amazing coverage of the Barkley marathons - the shots, the editing, the music, all of it! Thanks for putting this together and sharing it with the rest of us :)
I'd like to hear more about how Laz physically charts the course. Like, he physically goes out there himself and marks/measures all 4/5 loops and, plots it on a map and also places down books??
Thank you so much for this! I love watching the 2014 documentary time and again and I will watch this one for sure a few times more.
That doc is the best. Happy to be able to continue the story. Thanks for watching!
Another good one is "Where Dreams Go to Die", about Gary Robbins - it's on youtube
That’s so much for putting this together!! Derive so much inspiration from this. Appreciate y’all!
Thanks for watching, Drew!
Barkley stories always make me so emotional. Thank you for sharing
This was amazing! Great job Michael and congrats to Joe on a job well done on his first try!
Thanks Trish!!
Absolutely incredible. Laz is a legend.
Each year these ladies and gentlemen make me cry. Thank you so very much.
That was absolutely wonderful to watch - great film …… such amazing amazing athletes …….
Love this! A very well done documentary that details the trials and tribulations of the Barkley Marathon. More please!
Thank you, Vince! Hopefully there will be more to come
Absolutely unbelievable, very well done to all those who who gave it a go this year!
Such a fantastic doc!!! Thank you
Thanks Mark!
Great doc, love seeing the race thriving
great documentary! well done. hope Joe gives it a go again in '24
Thanks Brew!
What a crazy year with 3 finishers!!! Absolutely mind blowing what this race demands from each runner.... Joe's time is gonna come - no question!!! Can't wait for the 2024 edition ;)
Fascinating... Incredible.... tears in my eyes
Watching this was an emotional rollercoaster. All of the athletes are amazing!
You always have more. It is very rewarding when you figure that out for yourself....Great job to everyone that toed that line, and for those that finished this unbelievable race
Thank you for watching!
That was great! Congrats to both Joe and Michael for putting this together.
Thank you, Cyrus! Appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment
This race is one of the best kept secrets and I enjoy finding new avenues to watch about it each year. Thank you for the great video
Thank you for allowing a documentary on the 2023 race, it's my favorite content to watch
The running community is so awesome
Great stuff! The Barkley is so interesting. The difficulty and the mystery make it crazy intriguing!
It really is. Thank you for watching!
Awesome film!! Really enjoyed this!
So glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching!
Beautiful! Such warriors❤️🔥and very nicely put together ❤
Respectful referencing to previous documentaries on the Barkley with excellent editing choices of your own throughout. Superb film. Thank you.
Appreciate the kind words! And great handle. Thanks so much for taking the time to watch!
29:51 and she did!!!
Barkley is so brutal yet so amazing as well. Thank you for putting this together.
All I can say is wow! Just pure sportsmanship and heart out there. Just beautiful!
I’m so inspired by these people. The thought of even running one of these loops is WILD, congrats to all👏 and awesome documentary!
I know, it's hard to fathom. Thanks for watching, Lauryn!
Great video! Such an epic finish this year. Hopefully Joe can make history next year!
Fingers crossed. Thanks for watching!
It'd be even more awesome to be able to see them on the course.
Great work! One of the best Barkley documentaries I have watched - and I have watched them all. Very nicely put together.
Thank you, I really appreciate that! I feel very lucky that it was such a great year to be filming
thanks for this fantastic footage of this past year's barkley! I remember following keith's twitter throughout the event waiting on baited breath to hear about karel's finish! truly amazing set of runners this year. Fingers crossed for Joe for an upcoming year. By the way- GREAT choice of music in the background. A lesser known composer who does some really phenomenal work, and really added to the footage you had.
Thank you, Nellie! I'm so glad you enjoyed it and thank you for the note on music. I can't imagine following the twitter account this year. Keith was having too much fun with the nicknames.
I remember breathlessly following along the Twitter updates as the race went on after hearing about Barkley for the first time when this year's race started. Incredible to be able to watch this now!
Fantastic doc. Thank you for sharing this! I cannot get enough of the Barkley
Thanks for watching, Brad!
awesome video Michael. You really captured the true vibe of the 2023 event.
Massive respect to all runners, it blows my mind at the levels of human endurance on show here. They all should be proud of themselves x
Karel Sabbe is currently going for the record on the pacific crest trail (mexico to canada). he ran around 95km average the first 8 days
Correction. He ran 59.03 miles. KM doesn't exist in the United States.
@@umaikakudoyou know other units of measurement exist though?
Incredible doc, thanks for making it!
Thank you for watching!
A very well put together documentary, congrats. The 40 minutes just flew by!
Please tell me you guys covered the 2024 race? Came here after reading about jasmine paris finishing the race this year. The whole of the uk is so proud of you jasmine.
If this channel didn't, Singletrack on CZcams said they did and has started to put out 2024 content slowly
@@ps3udologue Thanks for the heads up. I have watched lots of stuff from singletrack so i'll keep my fingers crossed for a comprehensive day by day doc. Thanks again.
As a thru hiker - joe is legendary. Has some of the most mind-blowing fkts of all time - usually unsupported. The man beat the Appalachian trail supported record while unsupported - in my opinion the greatest feat ever accomplished on a long trail. Karl did beat his overall record - but karl was supported with a full crew. Joe was a guy with a backpack. insane
Joe will get it done one of these years. Even if he doesn't he's still my hero
Joe's AT FKT was wild. And how well he filmed it by himself was equally impressive. But crew or no crew, those PCT/AT Fastest Known Times are all so impressive at this point. Rooting for Karel right now who's back out on the PCT going for it again!
Thanks for watching!
@@pilotfield agreed! Don't mean to take anything away from Karl or other fkts - absolutely mind blowing runs and impossible feats
Just something about Joe's AT fkt that felt so unreal at the time. Blowing through the supported record by himself. I don't think we will ever see that again on these major trials - especially with how absurdly low these fkts are getting pushed by the field of talented runners
This made me HYPED I love when I can see new Barkley footage
Stoked to hear that. Thanks for checking it out!
This is the best Barkley film I've ever seen. Thanks for that.
Thanks for watching, Pablo!
Such a brutal race. Great mini doc.
So brutal. Thanks for watching, Andrew!
Awesome film, love watching Joe. He'll get his five loops soon. Also, is that Barkley finisher John Fegyveresi crewing John Kelly?
Yes it is/was.
@1519Spring beat me to it. It is! I believe he's crewed for John a few times now. He could not have been nicer and was generous with offering help and advice to us first timers.
@@pilotfield love it, it was like seeing a beloved character cameo in a movie.
Beautifully done as always!!
Thank you!!
Watched this years ago on Netflix and enjoyed it. People that do stuff like this amaze me
damn Aurelian got book jacked. Great work. Nice run.
And handled it perfectly. Thanks for watching!

That was really well done and I thoroughly enjoyed it - thank you!!!
Thanks for taking the time to watch, Ross!
“It’s fun time!!!” Lazarus’ rally cry at the start of that Barkley Marathons will be in my head at the start of all my races and long runs from now on
