In today’s video, we will talk about our apartment hunting in Spain and share with you how to find an apartment and tips for apartment hunting.
Valencia is the third-largest city in Spain. It is a popular tourist destination, attracting over 2 million visitors per year. Valencia is well-known for its cuisine, cultural festivals, and architectural variety.
We've finally arrived at our home in Valencia. We don't have much furniture, so hopefully, there's not much to move. We had to wait longer than expected to move in, but we finally did.
Valencia is without a doubt a wonderful city to live in! It's cheap, safe, light, and easy to move around, and it has some of the best weather in the world! Valencia not only has some nice neighborhoods to live in, but the city as a whole is fantastic.
We had a great time looking for apartments. We have friends who said they only looked at five apartments after being given a list of five, and then they looked at two before deciding on one.
It's absolutely stunning, and you should expect to pay for it if you decide to relocate there. However, it is not always the most practical choice. Take place in the city center. When renting an apartment, look for the nearest grocery store because, unlike the rest of Valencia, there are only a few decent ones in the city center. A very interesting area, and one of the best areas of town to go out and enjoy the diverse culture, with many restaurants and bars as well as a very active cultural scene.
▶️ Here are the topics we will discuss:
    • What we saw that most apartments had compared to the ones in the USA.
    • How we navigated through Idealista.
    • What we discovered about the requirements to get approved.
    • How we figured out what kind of apartment we wanted
    • How we chose the neighborhood that we wanted to live in
    • Who handles the properties and how we dealt with them
▶️ Tips for finding a better apartment:
    • Don’t put a lot of filters in Idealista.
    • Call the listing first before emailing.
    • Try Facebook groups to look for apartments.
    • Don’t post your budget in a public group.
    • Spent time in the neighborhood you like.
    • Most landlords will require a nominal ( Payslip in Spain)
    • Have a list of your must-haves.
    • Get an AirBNB to try out an area.
    • Most properties will be handled by an agent some will be directly handled by the owner.
    • Dealing directly with the owner might be easier.
    ▶️ Quick tips:
    • Most of the stores would deliver for free!
    • Mattress from max colchon
    • TV was from El corte ingles (outlet)
    • Most go the furniture from IKEA
    • Try looking for furniture from Facebook marketplace.

So sorry to hear of Fifi’s passing. You have her a wonderful gift of seeing the world before she went over the rainbow bridge. I can’t imagine that day and how hard that was for you both. We have our NLV appointment next week in LA and have gone over our folders many times. Just waiting on one last translation from Alba and our insurance policy to be issued and we should be good to go. I’m a bit worried cause our background checks expire in 10 days so I hope they will be accepted🤔

Thank you sooo so much for this video. My goal is to move to VLC in 2025 and I've watched a ton of videos about apartment hunting there. Yours was the first to mention not using filters on idealista (I have a pupper and have been checking off the allows pets option, it's great to know there are more options when you ask directly), the reservation fee option, and seeking a listing with a particular if possible. Be careful, in Valencia there are many racists, not all of them, they hide very well but when they get the chance, they call blacks Monkeys I saw a soccer match against another team, and almost the entire stadium insulted a black player by calling him a monkey. In Valencia there is a lot of Racist.

Hey guys. Thank you for posting your experiences there. We live in SoCal and had been considering moving to Spain and Valencia in particular. While doing our research, came across your videos and frankly they gave us the encouragement to make a trip there and see it for ourselves. We just came back after nearly a month and honestly, highly disappointed. Many good things but the negatives outweigh the positives by 3 to 1. Got the definite impression that the foreigners and Americans in particular are no longer welcomed there; perhaps due to the rise in cost of housing and living in general. So we have a change of heart and will look for another country to explore. Wish you much joy, peace, and good health there...

@@EverythingIsBoffo We had tried connecting with several real estate agencies and relevant attorneys nearly 8 months prior to our visit. Most showed no interest and those we had confirmed appointments with, were incredibly unreliable and while we stressed our desire to find home there while there, no replies until yesterday….But more than anything, we got the definite impression that many locals did not care for our presence. Rude maybe too strong but certainly not friendly. Especially in restaurants and some hotels. Anyhow, glad you are doing well..

when did you apply for your padron and TIE? It was my understanding you had to apply for the TIE within a month of arriving to Spain? And in Valencia you can not get a padron until you submit a lease with nothing less than 6 months. How did you do it? Please let me know. I had to cancel my Airbnb of three months because the empadronamiento office said I needed a lease of at least 6 months; otherwise, they would not be able to give it to me. how did you guys get around that, staying in different places as you did? Any suggestions? I saw the video of your Valencia Rental. How long did you wait o apply for your Padron and TIE? I'm sorry for your loss.

Thank you! We were able to find an apartment for 1 year and was able to schedule the Padron and TIE appointments within the 30 days of our arrival. The appointment themselves were past the 30 days (Padron - 38 days and TIE - 49 days past our arrival) but everything went fine. One of our viewers said she was able to get the TIE before the padron as it's not really a requirement, although it was nice having my correct address on the card already. If you can, maybe try scheduling a TIE even if you don't have a padron first if finding an apartment has been difficult. Good luck! :)

Not sure if ill get a response but i realize you ended up in an empty apartment. We are planning on making move early next year and i am already doing all the research.
We lived in Panama for 14 years and returned to the US 3 years ago. We got our residency there and it was quite easy, we did havevtomprobide paperwork but not too bad. We also got a bank loan and built our house. Badicalky no restructions for travel. Many expata dont become residents but live there permanently. After 3.montgs they drive jnto Costa Rica for a week and drive back in ir they fly into Miami and return. No other restrictions. We will have to be aware that we will have to split 6 months into 5 years. We love to cruise and probably make a trip back to US to see family. So if you want to travel within Europe when you leave Spain does that start the countdown of 6 months or does it start when i fly to the US.
I assumevyou guys did mot take anything to Spain? No furniture, towels, sheets, pots/pans, dishes? Nothing at all? Wonder if it's worth taking some basics even though theres a cost involved. I have so much original art that i would like to take. So basically as soon as you can move into the apt you gotta go out and shop as you said Vorye Ingles for a bed etc.
I will.aldo be taking a dog. A mini schnauzer. So i figure first thing in the morning no hanging out to have coffee, ill have to hurry and get dressed to go down and out to take dog out.
Is it easy to take dogs places? Can i stop for coffee and sit outside with my dog? Would that be allowed?
Seems you live in a great area. We have visited Valencia and have an idea if areas like Russafa and i think El Carmen just no clue about price ranges. We know our must haves.
Is summer heatbreally that bad? You cannot sleep at night. We did not have aircon in Panama but nightbtemps were around 67° so it was not bad with ceiling fan.
How about winter temps? I can take our duve and be ok i think.
I heard many expats end up in Benidorm and areas out there and we could take a train into the city.
I also imagine i need to get a cart for market shopping lol
Sorry to make this so long and maybe you can offer some thoughts especially since you have now been there for a while.
I only worry that it will be hard to meet people and get friends. Hoping you have mot had regrets in your move.

We wouldn’t know anything about cost of living, the immigration visas, which city to live in etc if we didn’t watch all the videos of others who lived here. There was even a video of a Filipino guy who lived a day as a homeless person! He showed where you can find random coins, with those he got some food at the grocery. Pretty cool video!

Saddened to hear of your beloved Bulldog "Fifi's"' passing, but I am sure that you have wonderful memories of times with her, as I do with wonderful memories of my 14 year old German Shepherd female "LadyB" in 2019.
There are severals thing I think you may have overlooked of differences between "private" landlords/ladies and "inmobiarias"/estate agents/realtors, when seeking property to either rent nor buy. The difference is that "inmobilaria's" etc, are commercial enterprises, there to make a PROFIT..! I have had numerous instances over the years of contacting an agent about a property recently listed online only to be told, "Oh..Sorry that property is no longer available..however we do have these wonderful properties to show you..."!! Usually all of which are far from what I seek. A second disadvantage is that many agents will try to make you adjust your requirements to meet the specifications of properties they may list., rather than try to meet your needs. 3rd, Disadvantage.... Frequently when signing for a property through and agent as tenant one is required to pay agency fees upfront, usually at least ! mo0nths rent in advance although I have sometimes been told even more.. So with an apartment costing say 1000 Euro's per month to rent.. Through and Agency you can expect to pay 1000(First months rent in advance),+ 1000(Security Deposit) + 1000 *minimum) Agency Fees, so an extra 3000 Euro's just to actually gain occupation...!!
By dealing direct with the landlord you can save the extra 1000 Euros...

Thanks for watching! Not sure which visa will be best for your situation but look into the Non Lucrative Visa because lots of retirees we know are on that visa. (this is not legal advice!)
Best also to get a consult with a lawyer. Good luck!
