Hey Guys! Welcome, and in today’s video, we will compare the quality of life and living costs in California’s third largest city San Diego to its Spanish counterpart Valencia.
The low cost of living in Spain is among the most alluring reasons to relocate, among many others. With a lower cost of living than in the USA, you can live in Spain and experience a great quality of life. Prices are always one of the key factors when comparing two nations, there is no getting around that. Spain appears to be a particularly strong choice in that regard.
Spain has a 123% lower cost of living than the USA on average. Rent, utilities, groceries, daycare, and health insurance are the items with the highest price discrepancies.
There are several benefits, including warm weather all year round, delectable food, and an advanced healthcare system. Spain has relatively modest living expenses despite having high levels of living. Although America is reputed to be far more expensive than Spain, it shares many similarities with Spain in terms of temperature and a mingling of cultures, particularly when comparing the cost of living in cities.
▶️Here are some of the cost of living differences between the cities of San Diego vs. Valencia:
• Meal for 2 people in mid-range restaurant San Diego cost $80 & Valencia cost $46.27
• Regular capuccino price in San Diego $4.74, on the other hand Valencia $2.04
• One gallon milk price in San Diego $4.02 & in Valencia $3.19
• 1lb chicken fillet price in San Diego $7.21 & Valencia $3.08
• 1lb apples price in San Diego $1.97 & Valencia $0.91
• Local transportation 1 way ticket cost in San Diego $2.50 & Valencia $1.54
• On 925 ft apartment electricity, heating, cooling, water & garbage bill in San Diego $170.36 & in Valencia $137.70
• Free-school or Kindergarten school monthly tuition fee for one child in San Diego $170.36 & in Valencia $137.70
• In city-center one bedroom apartment rental cost per month in San Diego $2,597.29 & in Valencia $757.83
• In city-center area price per square feet to buy a apartment in San Diego $1,069.81 & in Valencia $280.76

This is the best video I've seen so far about any city or country in Europe. For someone like myself who is going to retire, the salary is not a factor, so this is a great option
Thank you very much! ☺️
Thank you so much for this video! I live in San Diego and have been considering moving near Valencia but salaries are definitely lower in Spain. It is good to have such detailed numbers. Thanks!!
So glad you liked it! We tried to make it as thorough as possible. Feel free to reach out if you have more questions or join our Moving to Spain Facebook group! 😊
Thank you for this showcase! Extremely helpful, confirmed a lot of some if the things I researched and more.
Glad it was helpful!
Very informative video thanks for that very detailed video.
Thanks for watching! Glad it helped ☺️
thank you, this is helpful!
You are very welcome!
Love your videos. Such great info.
Thank you very much!
Very helpful.. thanks 🙏🏾 ❤😊
Thanks for watching! ☺️
Ooh this was fab! Thank you 🥰☕️
You’re welcome Tessa! ☺️
I've been traveling to Spain regularly for 23 years. I love Spain and the last thing I want to experience is expat Americans, particularly Californians. All these video sites tell you about how much cheaper it is to live in Spain. What about talking about Spain and not tubs of yogurt. It's as if Spain is Barçelona, Madrid and Valencia. Don't encourage people to move to Spain if they have never made the effort to learn Spanish and know nothing of its culture and history. What are Americans now economic migrants? Stop this insidious, destruction of affordable living for Spaniards in the cities mentioned above. You are destroying life for the long term residents of these cities, particularly the elderly.
Thanks for a very well done video. 😊
Thank you for watching! ☺️
So good video!!!
Valencia is amazing! I'm glad you are showcasing it as most people only know about Madrid and Barcelona. I haven't been able to go back but I love seeing it in your videos.
Thank you, we and torn between keeping it a secret and shouting it from the rooftops. It’s a beautiful city with beautiful people.
Great info, thanks! We are looking to make the move from San Jose CA and cant wait for this cost of living…
Thanks for watching! Enjoy España!
Thanks for this comprehensive price comparison.
I hope you can also make one for private schools (the not so expensive but decent options) for highschool and universities..
We’d love to but we don’t have kids so we would know 😊
I think one important point for many, missing might be "medical costs"..? Remember that the U.S. is the only country in the 1st or 2nd world where one has the phenomena of "medical bankruptcies"..!!
Totally agree! Thanks for watching 🙏🏼
Im also a Filipina moving to Valencia from San Diego! Glad I found your channel. Thanks for giving a realistic view of pricing there
You’re welcome! Thanks for watching!
Real cool video. As a European I am really interested to see how gas is not that much cheaper in California. I thought it was cheap everywhere. The rental price comparison really blew me away too...
Thanks for watching! Yes I think gas in Europe is about the same as CA. And the rental pricing is night and day.
Great information.....thank you. I also live in San Diego but I'm in a rural part of north county. After seeing the cost of housing in the city, I am really counting my blessings; my mortgage payment for my 10 acres is $1,500 p/month. Based on your estimates I think I could live well on less than 3k p/month outside of Valencia.
Wow, that’s a great mortgage payment! Thanks for watching!
Hey this video is perfect bc I’m San Diegan and moving to Valencia in the fall! Excited to pay less to live but definitely not excited to be making a fraction of what I get paid now (as a teacher). Anyway thank you so much for all the info! Super helpful!
Thank you for watching! I think the lifestyle that you will gain here in Spain will more than compensate for the lower income. ☺️
Did you end up moving to Valencia? We are thinking of moving there, too.
Also curious if you ended upmoving to Valencia, my wif is also a teacher and I can work remote there so we are really considering it since the cost of living in the U.S. is out of control.
Thanks!
Thank you very much! ☺️
Excelente vídeo,❤ Podrían hacer uno con precios en Malaga, que también es un a ciudad a los que muchos tenemos c9momopcion para emigrar desde USA. Gracias nuevamente ❤
We arrive to Spain on Wednesday. ☺️. We decided to do a stopover in Ireland and Portugal before we settle in Spain. Starting in Madrid as that is where I have family but rents are soooo expensive so we are still looking at Valencia and other cities close by like Gandía, Denia etc. we haven’t had much luck with Idealista in Madrid. It is all agents. We are trying to find a landlord that is willing to work with us on an NLV without employment paperwork which it seems most agents want you to have. We joined your FB group also. Please pass along any suggestions or recommendations in finding a rental as we have a few weeks in Madrid and will head down south.
Bienvenidos Dina! Try also milanuncios, I heard the older generation likes using that website. And definitely call first, and if they don’t pick up then leave a message and email and text them. Good luck, don’t lose hope! You’ll find one eventually!
try Cullera
Hola. I just arrived in Valencia from Northern CA and I'm staying in an Airbnb for a month (it was a coincidence that Las Fallas was going on which was boffo.) I assume the apartments listed in Idealista are for those who have long-term visas, meet requirements, and sign a year lease, correct? I went to the website but I'm not clear on what the requirements are. Thanks in advance. BTW, I am impressed with your research, such as Las Fallas, especially given I assume you are still learning the language. Much appreciated.
Hola! Not necessarily, unless it’s expressly stated that they only want long-term renters. Once you talk to the realtors you’ll know, or they may have other listings that do short-term. Thanks so much for the kind words! ☺️
Would love to see an update on this now that you are living here. Are you saving money on day to day like food vs states?
Yes absolutely saving so much money still compared to the US. Some food items have gone up a bit, 1 trip to the grocery store last year would cost 40, now it’s 50€ for a cartful of stuff. Still quite reasonable. When we dine out our bill hovers around 27-40€. Used to be 23€.
We save the most by not having a car. We don’t pay for gas, parking, tickets, repairs, car wash, etc. we get around by walking or bus/metro.
We also found a gym membership that costs 109€ for 15 months, so what used to be 35/month is now around 7/month. So I guess that evens outs the food costs.
@@EverythingIsBoffoWhat are you doing for health care? Are you entitled to Spanish Seguridad Social?
@@Belenshares we can contribute to the public health care system because we’ve been here a year, but we choose to keep our private insurance as the costs are the same and we wanted to keep our doctors. You can check out www.innoinsure.com/visainsurance/everythingisboffo for some health insurance options available for expats.
Hello great videos as always thank you. On a side note: I work remote in IT and my wife is a teacher who can get a job in Valencia but only in English for now. We have 3 kids so its a little trickier to jsut get up and move, but any tips from anyone with children who moved to Valencia and what to expect who be greatly appreciated.
Here's a video we did that has proven to be helpful: czcams.com/video/umLufHyWlDQ/video.html
Top notch guys, you really put in the work and broke it down. How refreshing it is to get details. You just don't see that in most of these vids. My Brother and I are so imprisoned, impressionable... I mean Impressed!
Thank you! We appreciate your comments! ☺️
What is the website that you look for the apartments at?
We used idealista, but there are others like milanuncios and fotocasa. Thanks for watching!
Pregunta? How far are you from la playa in the central city in Spain? Near downtown, you are near the harbor which drives the price. Thank you!
We are 6 kms away from the playa, in L’eixample. Thanks for watching!
@@EverythingIsBoffo fantástico! Gracias!
everything in USA is waaay more expensive and the return is waaaay lower
😞
Great guide but something went wrong calculating buying house cost per m^2 , The average cost is ~ 2k€ and if you do it from scratch without land cost is ~ 1k.
Thanks for the insight! Good to know 😊
When I visited Spain 15 years ago I was like, how rich are my family?! Everyone owning holiday houses. Now that I'm searching, I understand how cheap the property is. Yes, the salary is less, but the property is still cheaper in comparison. In Australia, property is so expensive compared to salary.
We still share your feelings from way back! Everyone owns a home here except for us! 😆 But yes, it’s still cheaper here for sure 👏🏼
Hermoso lugar 😊😊
Gracias! 😊
Excellent video. Thank you. We are 66YO retired educators (from LA), visiting Poland and Estonia after helping a new school open in Lviv. We are seriously thinking of selling our Portland condo and moving to Europe. We appreciate the safety, walkability, and excellent healthcare offered in Spain. Is renting a better option than owning a home for expats in Spain? We always wanted to own, but now it seems that putting the cash in CDs is wiser than purchasing a home. Plus the healthcare is better in Spain than in the US. Your thoughts? Dean & Cindy
If I could, I’d buy a home now before prices go way up. But also, that’s because we really love living here and want to stay permanently. But if you want to explore first and travel, renting may be a better option for the first few years.
@@EverythingIsBoffo Thanks for the response! There is much to evaluate. How far is the airport?
@@DeanRamser 20 mins by car, 30 by train
What about golf? And golf country clubs?
Probably best to check the Facebook groups. We don’t play golf unfortunately, so we wouldn’t know.
@@EverythingIsBoffo thanks!
What about gyms that have raquett ball courts how much per month fees ? You only talk about tennis and or excerise gyms . Reply back thanks 😊
We only play tennis. You can lookup racquetball rates online.
So you do have rackett ball in spain that people play yes or no ?
@@jencordero4782 I don’t know 🤷🏻♀️ I think Google will be a better resource for your question.
Google we are counting on your reply bc you are a resident in Spain then we do our research just need to know basis. Thanks
The best price info for living in Spain.
Thank you!
It’s not just the cost of living, but what about earning and taxes? Are you both fully retired? If not, what kind of work do you do? Do you rent or own your home?
Thanks for watching! We made this video to compare cost of living in USA and Spain because of course everyone’s socio-economic situation is different. We hope to show if moving to Spain makes sense for the viewers.
For us, we are on sabbatical, my husband owns a business in the US, we are renting in a nice area, and it made sense for us to spend our sabbatical in Valencia. And one thing we know for sure, we cannot escape death and taxes. ☺️
As a US citizen you’re gonna be doomed to double taxation regardless of where you go. You’ll have to pay taxes in the country you live, and to our greedy AF country cause that’s just how they want it. Even if you don’t live or work in the US, you’re still forced to pay taxes to the US. Spain has a high income tax too so you’ll be subject to that. I believe Portugal has better taxation policies where if you go on a D-7 visa or a golden visa, you won’t get tax in Portugal the first year, and then you’ll get reduced taxation for the following 2 years? I might be wrong on the last one but they have like a treaty to make it easier on tax payers. You can’t escape taxes sadly but you can escape this miserable life filled with consumerism in the US 🤷🏻♀️ there are plenty of options on visas and stuff, watch different channels and you’ll see 😀
@@michellemorrison9663 a US citizen won’t be double taxed in Spain, as there is a tax treaty. You will have to file a US tax return, but the first 100k of foreign income is not taxed by the US, and after that, you will pay the higher rate between the two countries (which will be Spain).
@@user-pn8dq6vt4s not what I’ve heard but definitely a good piece of information! Thank you, this is good to know. This is why I keep researching💓

Very true! No wonder everyone has a barra de pan in their grocery bag here. It has become a staple in our house as well. We didn’t use to eat bread in the US, but we do here. Thanks for watching!
+ the food quality in Spain is more better ! But u don’t forget Spain salary is much smaller!! I u work in American companies have American salary and live in Spain it’s great!! But if u work in Spain than not great!!
But great job u done ✔️
Thank you! Yes definitely need to take the salary into consideration. But the opportunity to actually purchase a flat here is closer to reality than back in CA.

Mean salary per hour in San Diego is $30. In Valencia it's a bit more than 10€ (=$10). Am I the only one noticing the deception?
There’s no deception, we mentioned salary for both in this video as well.
@@EverythingIsBoffo I watched until the very end. Apologies.
i think this is all relative... salary in US may be higher than most of EU...
Definitely. Thanks!
What are the main reasons why you decided to live specifically in Valencia, Spain?
We wanted to live in a place where we didn’t need a car, close to the beach, lower cost of living than Madrid and Barcelona, similar temperature as California, has an international airport, it’s very safe, and we get immersed in the language more here than in Madrid and Barcelona.
@@EverythingIsBoffo Thank you for your response! Two last questions, after living there for several months, are you still loving it? Also, when finding an apartment for rent, is it best to go directly to a real estate agent? Thanks again!
@@joyfullypacinglife8847 we are loving every day here. Absolutely no regrets, this hit all the items on our checklist.
I recommend going through the websites and then calling the agents, or leave a message if they don’t pick up. When we had agents look for us, sometimes it took them days to send us anything because they have other clients. But since we had a lot of time on our hands, it made sense to do a lot of the legwork and eliminate the apartments that we didn’t like right off the bat.
Here is how we found our apartment: How to Find an Apartment in Valencia, Spain ✨

@@EverythingIsBoffo Thank you!

U forgot to mention the most important factor: the differences in income
I’m pretty sure if you watched the video, you’d see it 🙏🏼
Paying more for unhealthy food that can kill you or make you obese is absurd. Paying more for mediocre housing that may lead to hoarding due to laziness and overdadvertising is just as bad. Paying for overpriced cars that can't even be driven at high speeds in many cases. Smoking weed/cigs, drinking alcohol, doing (pharmacy) drugs, etc. Each of these can easily keep you stuck and the list goes on. The U.S. is not going to last long with this approach.
There's a massive difference in lifestyles, and we feel lucky to be here in Spain. We haven't had or needed a car for 2 years now, and haven't felt the pressure that we felt in CA. Most importantly, we sleep well knowing that we will not have medical debt as long as we live here in Spain.
Videos like this I find annoying. You compare San Diego CA, a known super expensive city to valencia. Who don't you compare valencia to Tampa Florida?
Secondly, you are comparing post tax costs not pre tax costs
Living in Florida on 100k of income will leave you with 90k in post tax income. Living in valencia on 100k of income will leave you with 65k post tax. And good luck finding a job in valencia paying that amount of money.
This video is misleading and should be relabeled to compare valencia to san Diego, not US vs. Spain
We only lived in California and have visited Florida a few times and never really knew it enough to compare. If we made a video comparing Tampa to Valencia, then that would be misleading and probably more annoying. Apologies if this video created confusion. We’re not in any way professionals so this free video should be taken with a grain of salt. Appreciate the feedback! 🙏🏼
regardless, spain is cheaper
1. Tampa has like 350k residents to Valencia's 812k and San Diego's 1.26m residents, that comparison would make absolutely no sense. Due to inflation fluctuation that occurs especially in a capitalist driven economy such as America. THOUGH not the BEST comparison, OP simply is using the knowledge they have to inform people who may have been wondering. They never said its end all be all.
2. post tax costs... are being compared because European countries rarely have a "pretax cost" the posted prices...already include the tax.
3. If you didn't enjoy the video..make your own, fix what you didn't like.
