Good info! I’m an American living in Mexico. My adult daughter is a Mexican and US citizen, but she is in the process of getting her Spanish citizenship. Her grandmother is a Spanish citizen and apparently my daughter qualifies for citizenship because of that. So, I was wondering if that will allow me to get residency in Spain. Once my daughter gets her Spanish citizenship.

As an expat, huge thanks for emphasizing learning the LANGUAGE. It's responsible for like 80% of a successful integration. Without the language you will stay a forever alien just wondering around like a tourist. With language, you can socialize, learn more about the culture, history, traditions, etc. I would give another 15% for finding a fitting job and living space (town and apartment) but the rest 5% is basically paperwork and such.

This is so true! I’ve lived in USA and Canada, both countries have so many immigrants that don’t speak the local language… in Canada I’ve seen many people becoming Canadian citizens that can’t have a conversation in English (I was on the English side) I helped ppl, with documentation, doctors, dentist, Canadian citizens that can’t speak English! I created a free English practice, it was online, ask who joined, few people! =[ I lived in USA to learn English, in 6 months I was speaking, when I moved to Canada I was already fluent, now I am in Spain and although I use very minimal Spanish on my daily life, but I have the very minimal to have a conversation in Spanish, for shopping, for doctors, dentist and to connect to my local friends! Learning the language is key for success as an immigrant anywhere!

To me is very interesting to see how Spanish citizens see other countries. The Spanish citizens view of Spain is really really bad, I just came from Paris (second time visiting Paris) and my colleagues from work were very exited and asking me: how was it? Paris is so beautiful, no? Bla bla bla and I am like: I am sorry, I like Madrid way better… and they made fun of me, like it was something absolutely impossible, because most of them think that Paris is way better than Madrid… People here also ask me WHY DID YOU MOVE FROM CANADA? 🤷🏻‍♀️ Spaniards think Canada is heaven on earth, I guess because they never lived or visited there. Spaniards don’t appreciate Spain and underestimate their beautiful country! Yes, with many issues, but that’s everywhere. I am not saying YOU are like this, but many ppl are!

James, you are absolutely correct about hiring a tutor to learn/improve one’s Spanish. I speak at an intermediate level and have studied twice at a university in Santiago de Compostela. A couple of times I worked with an excellent teacher online from a Mexican university. Not only did she understand how the language is used in Spain and Mexico but she explained the subtleties of the language which was fascinating.

Great stuff. I would add/ emphasize:
    * really understand the wealth tax (At both the country and province level) - This has been hard since the government has been making last minute rules. Clearly this is part of the tax simulation/ getting a good tax person recommendation.
    * Visit areas/ schools/ etc before you move
    * Think about when you move here, particularly for US citizens - Better to move with less than 183days left in the calendar year so as to not be a tax resident that first year.

But you don’t take care about how you’re impacting our economy and our general wellbeing, and the sustainability of our system and culture.

By the way, I know you are a Kiwi but you really sound Australian to me... I wanted to ask you if you have any videos on your channel or any contacts regarding student exchange. The only contacts I have in Spain are based in Barcelona but would prefer somewhere where the schools teach in castellano. My 13 and 12 year old boys have Spanish passports but can hardly articulate two sentences in Spanish, and we have decided that Duolingo is never going to teach them enough so we have decided to send them there. I just discovered this channel a couple of weeks ago and enjoy it. I lived in Spain from 19984-89 and loved it. I can see from your videos how the culture has change since my time there (i was shocked to see men in shorts LOL). The one thing I would like to add is that you really want to enjoy a good Paella, then you must take the time to visit Valencia. My ex-father-in-law was from there and while visiting him I had many Paellas in restaurants, in the small towns and in country villas. The paella in Valencia (since its the provincial dish), IMO, is better nowhere else.
Also, my suggestion is to do it during Fallas. The small towns in the area are having fiestas (smaller versions of Fallas) and many of them cook very large paellas for the entire community. These people have been cooking paellas for generations and they are without a doubt the very best you can eat.
Funny story, I just attended a Paella cooking class. It had shrimp and chorizo. I told the chef that during my time in Spain, I had never seen a chorizo paella. Maybe its and Andalusian version, but I tend to think it was an Americanized version. LOL
Keep up the good work as it gives me a fresh view, from the U.S. into the country that I miss dearly.

Thank you James, so much, there's a lot of stuff here to look at and at the very least you put it all in the context of actually doing it. Sounds like Golden Visa is the most streamlined form of doing it, but for retired folks it's the Non-Lucrative Visa.

Just like the Hotel California, you can check out anytime you want, but can never leave 🤣 Anyway, I’ve been a follower of your channel for a while now and really learn a bunch form you and Yoli. We visit our apartment in Fuengirola every summer so maybe one day we’ll run into each other if you’re down south! Hi! I think the only one that really works is the first way to transfer money. If you move and send 20k us dollars or similar, you could have problems with any method than bank to another bank account. I have my sister there since 16 years and she said if I want to invest in a small store, the only way is with legalized money, i cant just convert it to cripto. Cripto is a 4th way wich is better than the other 3 in that case. I couldnt make a bussiness but I could buy stuff for myself, pay the rent and live. What do you think? Is mandatory i could invest

Sometimes learning Catalan, Galician, or Basque are more important than Castilian Spanish. It depends on where are you going to live.
In Catalonia Valencia and Balearic Islands most people, and schools are in Catalan, and they are about 25% of Spaniards. Of course, they also know Castilian, but if you want to fit, better know that.

    • @todddamn14
      @todddamn14 Před měsícem

Americans are mentioned or featured so frequently because they have more scenarios of "getting it wrong" by being hit with double taxation, 'avoidable' higher taxation; or worse, punitive taxation and IRA penalties. It's not exclusionary of other countries' citizens, it's just cautionary to Americans!

So your "tips" are basically to hire someone to do each and every step of the moving process on your behalf?
For some reason that doesn't look right 😅
I've moved to Belgium, then Germany and now I need to move to Spain, all my previous moves I've done everything on my own and never needed any "professional service". Yeah sure, having someone doing stuff for you is great, but that's only plausible for people that have that much money to spend.
Some paperwork for sure is tricky in Spain, but you don't need an agent to look at idealista for you, you can just go search and look by yourself.

That is very typical of Anglo-Saxons. I want to live in Spain without obligations or taxes. In Spain the taxes are not exorbitant, what happens is that you want all the benefits without contributing anything. Moving to another country entails benefits and obligations, if in Your country pays taxes, why don't you want to pay them in your new country of residence?
