It is not only possible to be frugal in a high cost of living area, but it is a necessity. Unless you are making a huge amount of money, in order to survive a high cost of living area you must develop frugal habits. In this video, I share 10 frugal living hacks for high cost of living areas.
1. Live In A Central Location…Even If It’s (Slightly) More Expensive
A huge thing that drives up the cost of living is car ownership. When you live in a car dependent area, you spend more money on parking, gas, and wear and tear. One frugal living hack is to choose to live in an area that is in a central location where you do not have to depend on a car. Even if it's slightly more expensive, if you can walk more, you can save a lot of money.
2. Concentrate Fun Spending On The Weekends And With Others
We often spend money throughout the week on things like eating out, coffee, and convenience, but if you save your money throughout the week on those things, you will have more money to spend on fun things on the weekends without going over budget.
3. Do Things, But Don’t Go All Out
Being frugal is simply about being intentional. When you live in a high cost of living area, there are more things to spend your money on. If you are just intentional with your spending and go the frugal route and find the cheaper options, you can save money while still enjoying things.
4. Embrace Free Things Going On
Generally, high cost of living areas are more dense, which means that there is more free stuff going on. If you embrace free things going on throughout the area, you can fill you day without spending too much.
5. Always Leave Your House With A Full Stomach And A Water Bottle
Being frugal is about making sure you don't spend money when you don't have to. One simple hack is simply whenever you leave your house, make sure you have a full stomach and a water bottle. This can allow you to seek convenience and spend money on these things.
6. Buy More Experiences And Less Stuff
For most people on normal salaries, you have to prioritize what you want in life. I believe in spending more money on experiences and less on stuff. If you make that compromise, you can avoid going over budget.
7. Find The Cheaper Options
Many people think that what makes an area expensive is simply rent; however, other huge factors are where you shop, eat, and do activities. Cheaper alternatives are around and if you do research you can find cheaper options to save money.
8. Don’t Become A Yuppie
A Yuppie is a young urban professional that is often very materialistic and keeps up with the latest trends. In high cost of living areas, there are many Yuppies. Avoid becoming a Yuppie in order to save money.
9. Get The Cheaper Things When You Leave Your Area
Oftentimes when you live in a high cost of living area, prices are inflated like gas. Whenever you leave your area, run your errands to get the cheaper options.
10. Track And Stay On Top of Your Expenses
When you live in a high cost of living area, it is very easy to overspend and go over budget. It is important to track and stay on top of all your expenses on a spreadsheet in order to not go over budget.

I live in a high cost area (Greater Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada). We have a great public transit system, have tons of free things to do and have lots of choices on grocery stores to find the best deals. I share the cost of a 2 bedroom, 2 bath with large balcony, heat included and have been a long term tenant (living below market rent). There is a zero vacancy rate in this area. I also save money on going to the theatre by sitting in balcony or travelling off season or by purchasing a city attractions pass. One thing I do if I want to visit an amazing beautiful area, I eat before I go, take a travel water bottle, see when there is a local free festival and treat myself to a planned gelato. I live below my means and have a high savings rate. I have also reached the $100K + savings goal even though I am on a fixed disability income. I also belong to local share freely and buy nothing social media groups.
excellent, I am in London and I do the same, we get loads of free movies in the park in the summer, free country shows, free city farms and orchards where people do wassails and sell cheap plants, lots of things are walkable too, also free art galleries, we spend money on a decent flask and large comfy picnic blanket, we buy food at large supermarkets and make quality sandwiches much cheaper than in shops

Like coffee you guys make such a big thing to make your own coffee. Here we all drink instant coffee pour coffee, sugar, milk and hot water from the kettle and we are good.
We don't own those big coffee machine the trouble to clean, by refil paper bean. That, its for coffee shops not any other home.
I go the all week without buying anything. As normal.

Yeah I see the same, like hanging out your clothes in the line is normal in South America, if is sunny why would you use a dryer? So just wash and dry everything in advance and that’s it, no big deal, we all do coffee at home, get up early just to take time for coffee and breakfast 😅 and so on…

I learned to be frugal from my grandparents who went through the Great Depression. Living with them I saw the profound effect it had on them. Grandma was frugal to the point that when she opened her wallet George and Abe were wearing sunglasses 'cause it's been so long since they saw the light. Clothes were repaired, socks were darned, buttons and zippers were saved and reused, She use the same wax paper and brown bag for her lunch at work everyday until they wore out. She bought whole chickens and cut them up as it was cheaper than pre-cut chicken. They rarely ate out (twice a year maybe). You get the picture and I am happy to apply all this and make do, make it last and repurpose thing. The money I saved and invested led to an early retirement. It's amazing what you can do with the frugal life. Oh, if you are a saver and investor do not pair up with a big spender. It will not work out.

We're living in a pricey area now and moving to a cheaper area. My husband rides the train into the big city where he works. I started a new job. After the training, my drive will be about 10 miles each way (max). I do hang my laundry because my development is more affordable and therefore no HOA. You got a hair cut! I never buy water. God gives it to us for free. Fill a cup and drink it. We have numerous parks we can have picnics in. My phone is a Motorola G phone...very affordable.

I track every penny I spend and I've done that for years. It means that I get the most value for my money. If I buy "fast food' or something to eat out, it's a planned purchase. I always have water in my 2007 vehicle. I plan to keep the vehicle as long as I can get parts for it. My cell phone is 2 years old and was much less expensive new than many cell phones are. I plan to keep it for 3-4 more years and maybe longer. My life is far better than what my income indicates it would be because I know how to get the maximum value for me from my money.

@@Dream-bebe yes, why wouldn't it be if it been taken care of? Seat belts, Airbags, all kinds of monitoring systems. It's been well maintained. We had an oil change done about a month ago and the place that did that ran diagnostics. They said iin all ways it's in excellent condition.

I sold plasma the other day. They put it on a card. I went to the ATM and withdrew the money. I had the money in my wallet when my cousin and I walked to the gas station while waiting for my vehicle to be inspected. First…2 fountain drinks was $4.60. Second, I could not bring myself to spend the money in my wallet. I was thinking, “I sold my blood for this money, there is no way it is going to a pas station fountain drink.” I ended up paying with my debit card. It has become my new standard for buying anything…”is this worth the blood I sold?”

I consider myself frugal but if its a concert I really want to see I will pay up, not the front row but next tier. Funny thing is I did this with gas today, went to my dentist a bit away and prices were 40 cents cheaper so I filled up.
add to the water bottle / full stomach tip, if you have a car, take a cooler and put snacks in there or just add it to your backpack. I also get tired of drinking just water so I take water enhancers from Aldi or even powder from the big containers (tea, lemonade, etc.)
I think you do a great job on your content. My only advice to you is you need to eventually remove yourself from the “renting” loop and one day purchase your own dwelling when it makes sense for you.

I moved to Syracuse from Atlanta. I couldn't take the traffic. And apartments in central Atlanta are exorbitant! But the thrift stores in Atlanta are GOLD MINES! I do miss those! Free cycling is also big.

Well done, again! I live in DFW which didn't use to be a high COL area, but is now! I only eat out when meeting friends to socialize. The rest of the week I bring lunch/coffee to work and cook at home. There are many great activities on meetup. Libraries offer great free activities as well--last week I did a terrarium class, going to hear a speaker on Shakespeare for free!

I live in a small town that caters to tourists because of its location. It was an industrial town in its early history and now relies on tourism and because of that, the prices of food, gas, etc. are higher than in the bigger city about 45 minutes away. We also pay more in our small town because of the lack of competition and because when people are on vacation, they often spend more than they would otherwise. Have you done any videos on being frugal on trips/vacations? Many people take a vacation from being sensible with their funds on vacations. That is o.k. as long as one has budgeted for that. 😉
I would love to live in the city, I would ride a bike everywhere, living in the country a car expense gets very high.

Okay I’m DEFINITELY a yuppie lol but yuppie tips: to own a nice car, choose a ‘luxury’ brand that holds up and buy it used ~5 years old. My $20k Infiniti purchased in cash with all leather interior looks nice, but it’s actually very affordable and reliable! Yuppie tip 2: buy ONE luxury item! Ray Bans, Coach purse, Stanley cup- yes I own ONE of each of these and just use the one item all the time for years. Same for jewelry- diamond earrings, necklace, fancy watch? One single piece can be worn daily for a decade and no one will ever know this is your only jewelry, you just look fancy and people with think it’s your favorite! Minimalism can allow nice or materialistic things and frugality to coexist.
Is there a such thing as a frugal yuppie? Because like you, I only buy one luxury item per year. All of these items are timeless classic pieces that makes me look put together but I’ve had them for yearsssss! Great tip!

I'm currently looking for part-time work, as my full-time (with extra unpaid hours) - is costing me too much time and energy - it's not fun and there's no joy. My co-manager has a garage full of "stuff" - irresistible bargains, and his living costs are 5x as much as mine. I can afford to live on less. He can't.

I would agree with all of this. I am in 2 places and one of the places is full of comfortabley off hipsters who waste a lot of money by going to expensive bakeries. we have a very expensive trendy farmers market and it attracts them like mad, we enjoy the expensive farmers market but we don't buy anything there and we live 5 mins walk away. so we enjoy just looking and feeling pleased we can have a nice afternoon out by not buying anything from the farmers market. The independent stalls acharge a lot more just because they are in a trendy area. there are expensive cafes around there too and we don't go to them either but we enjoy others having fun while we just have a picnic in the park or find a low key cafe which doesn't attract the hipsters but the down and outs where it is a lot cheaper and more interesting. Living centrally is really a massive advantage.

organise your own social life and start up your own group in a cheap park or place, ,I set up a wellbeng group and we meet once a month in various cheap locations to do cheap stuff like jigsaws, diammond painting, repairing our clothes, wriitng thank you letters etc.

This basically sums up my life. I live in a HCOL area (DC metro area) and live in one of the most expensive counties in the country.
However, I live in a house with 3 other roommates, bike everywhere (don’t own a car) since I’m near everything I need, I meal prep and overall have low expenses. Plus, I’m single with no kids/pets. And I don’t have a “keep up with the Joneses” mentality.
Like you said, spend money on experiences. I do just that when I save my money for travel 😊

haha, I really put it off. Since I moved to a new area, I don't have my go to barber, so I was a bit lazy to get it cut. After a while it doesn't feel good how long it is and really bothers me so I found a place for the time being!
we missed going to the ballet in London but we managed to find cheap seats, we were in the balcony too and it was fine. we were at the back and near the loos too just in case lol

Excellent video! I'm curious: have you ever explored the possibility of ridding yourself of your car altogether? Could you rely on rideshare apps for the times you really need to travel, or something like Zipcar? Would the savings from not having a car (insurance, loan payments , parking -- if you pay extra for parking, gas, etc.) outweigh the cost of occasionally renting a car or grabbing an Uber? Might make an interesting video!
It would limit me too much. If I was in NYC or something I could get away with it, but I couldn't visit friends or family outside of my area as much. It does suck to pay so much for insurance, but outside of that I own my car, it's in good condition, and I use like a tank a month so it's not an out of control expense. Paying for parking is crazy in the cities though!

Learn to cook and make good coffee with or without/o a fancy coffee machine (simple French press is best). The quality of the beans is factor No 1. Benefits: you’ll not only save money, you’ll eat better quality food and lose weight. Promise
You maybe right - however in my case if I decide to stay near where I work my rent would be double of what I’m paying right now. I work 14 - 15 days a month - my gas expense of driving 100 km a day for 14 - 15 days comes to roughly only 25-30 % of the difference in rent, if I were to stay closer. So in my case staying farther makes sense. Moreover where I stay I do get everything as it’s a central location.. ❤ Great as usual El Agustin.. ❤

I live in a village about 20 km from Eindhoven, and my house at the very far end in the west direction, so I decided long time ago ( 10 years ago ) to stop driving cars of all or any kind of cars. From that time till now I use E-bike , it's very easy to move and you can your groceries done very well..
I find people trash higher value things in higher value areas... time to check out freecycle, marketplace, kerbside clearances etc and make the most of other peoples' wastefulness.

After being abroad for 2 years in Ecuador, I just want to be back here. Living in another country is hard as you have to adjust culturally and you always feel like you're an outsider. It is much cheaper and your money goes further abroad though

City life is not for me ! I need a car but once other week. My heating is wood, my kitchen garden provides us all year round and cultural life comes to us. Rural living expenses are cheaper in my country and I love my life.

You got hexagon wall shelves for plants and another indoor plant in the background. Is that really frugal? We can barely afford regular furniture or food while working two jobs, let alone miniature indoor plants and shelves to hold them on a wall.
Being bitter & hostile is not an attractive trait. It's no one else's fault if you"re not bright enough to figure out how to increase your income.

Going out with a full stomach gives a bloated feeling for me...which i dont want..rather ill spend a little amount to have a small snack or so..and enjoy eating that out..and once back home ill have a full meal..thats the strategy i follow.
