Very expensive SQ5 TDI engine rebuild. Still need more money?

  • Welcome to the second video of the SQ5 TDI
. In the previous video we had this car delivered to us with a knocking sound from the engine. After a very short diagnostic the worse scenario was confirmed. Bottom end damage ... Owner managed to get a second hand bottom end that was delivered to us to build the engine on that. So we get to work ... If you think that was it you are wrong... more money is needed after the engine starts.

Like mentioned by me before, I own a A6 V6T..perfect car but, dpf filter, egr ventil, oil cooler had to be done..now it needs a new sensor for exhaust gas..and I am waiting for the turbos to fuck up soon since they do weird metallic sounds. Gonna sell it whilst I can. Bought it for 38k€ and repair’s so far are over 8,5k€..no service included(had to change the oil twice after parts came in. Perfect motor but once it starts to fail it’s a mess. Own it for a 1,75y made about 60000 on it bought it with 88000km on the clock. So anxious about this video.

Ues this sort of thing was done all the time in the 60s 70s 80s and you could probably get away with it up to the early 2000s .. but now !!!! Just lookmat all those pipes the vacuum system the wires the turbos!!!!!!
What a totall nightmare and in the end i predict the injectors are what killing the old engine in the first place ... over fueling like mad diluting the oil burning the piston and wrecking the barings

It's a good practice to have any way for older "performance" cars. If you want it to last, preventative maintenance is key, some people look at you funny when you do things before they are "needed" but it's better to be on top of it before the problems occur.

Have you noticed, the problem is with injector 1 and 4..(front - oposite each other - one in plus and the other in minus). I think the injectors can be alright, its just the ECU compensating some kind of "unbalance-timing" from the engine. it can be minor.... but if no errors on VCDS... ECU is defenitly compensating. hope it helps.

Have a look around next time you’re in a busy motorway service station. There’s a good chance you’ll see a recovery truck. Take note of what’s being recovered. I’ll save you the trouble… it’ll be a Land Rover Discovery.
Judging the relative overall reliability of a brand by what’s on the ramps of a workshop that specialises in repairing that brand is ridiculous.
Cars that are expensive to maintain and repair eventually become cheap enough that people who can’t afford the running costs buy them.
The tyres on a performance car normally give you an idea of the mindset of the owner. Mismatched cheap tyres tell you the owner has expectations way beyond reality.

Ahoj kolego, regarding the injectors still keep overfuelling - the ECU is probably using the old values it learned while compensating injected quantities for the old engine, what I would do is reset the injectors in ECU memory and do a new adaptation for all of them using original codes printed from factory if according to the testing shop they are alright but would like to see how far within tolerance they are and if tolerance have moved too close to the limit then refurb and adaptation with new codes ... :) ... but I guess it has been sorted by now anyway

Not the German engineering is at fault here. Given the looks of the old block and rods, etc, this owner probably changed the oil 2 times since he owned the car. Even if it's a diesel, you need to count in the operating ours not only mileage, and based on that, change the oil every 8 to 10 k kilometers ( i use European stuff, don't know Imperial). Changing the oil on ANY car higher than 10k km will bring the engine to its death far sooner than later. Forget what the dealer says... Probably what the dealer says is valid only on German Autobahn where diesels like the most, but not even there. When i hear maintenance schedules to change oil at 15k km or 30 k kms my back hair becomes wolverine.

excessive rich mixtures leave loads of unburnt fuel in the cylinders/chambers ...which washes the lubrication of the bores, and causes elevated wear ...also, fuel goes down past the rings into the oil sump, which dilutes the oil lubrication, causing engine bearings to be improperly lubricated. Is it common practice there to rebuild an engine for VAG? Not sure if its VW Audi specific but domestic vehicles here if something like that happens they just replace the entire engine and refuse to rebuild them as it is too costly in labour to do so

@@VAGTechnicwow! £20k plus for an suv engine? The lease rates on a new SQ5 were excellent. Either the formula used to calculate future value is flawed or the people who buy them used need better advice!

Bad fuel pressure sensor? They get really bad before the ecu recognises it. And bad remaps, which just ramp up the fuel pressure, kill them really quickly.
If this poor running condition was the original root cause, I suspect the cats/dpfs have seen better days.
Failing that, it’s time to start switching around injectors.
