This time with a low mileage Audi A8 with 3.0TDI DDV engine. Customers contact us originally just to sort out oil pressure software upgrades but he mentions in person there is a sound coming from the engine. So we had a listen to it but it was very hard to say what it could be. He booked the car again for inspection to prove if there's any internal issues and hoped for the best that the warranty company would agree to cover it. After we open the engine from top this is what we found ...

Man how the mighty 3.0 TDi has fallen. I have a A5 3.0 Tdi with the CCWA engine and it still works like a charm. Sad to see how much the quality has dropped on these engines.

We all need to realize that these guys are doing great job and probaly living good because of good job. How to make good job even better? Answer is videos like this. I dont believe this is crucial for engine because I see a lot of cars with 3.0 TDI's (2018+) with more than 200000km's and still running smooth.
Appalling use of poor quality materials and Audi must be aware of this problem, but still persist in this farce of oil pressure reduction which contributes to rapid wear, especially at that kind of mileage 🤷🏼♂️
i consider bmw/audi/mercedes to be lease cars. you buy a honda/toyota...
these cars are nice if they work, but unfortunately, reliability and ease of maintenance werent on the top of the list when they designed them.

VAG EA888 motor has had an issue with cracking plastic housings on water pump - stat housing for years. They make an upgraded part that is sold as a replacement for the stock version but still carried on fitting the sub standard original. Mine failed at 18k on my 3yr old Golf R just out of warranty.
At work we had some grass cutting strimmers on test from a large manufacturer and they inspected them weekly. As it's commercial use it's much tougher on wear a month is like a year for home use. The engineer after a period of time was asking about gearbox failure, they were still fine, at which point he said they will change to a less robust plastic as they were too strong! Designed to fail to keep you buying more 🙄

Some of the best content coming from this channel on Audi engines. As an owner of a 2014 TDI with 125K miles I can at least be confident in knowing what to listen for when things start to go wrong. It’s so unfortunate because this engine is such a joy to drive. But coming from VW in my early days you come to learn to live with some of the quirky aspects of German car ownership.

Land Rover have done the same with their TDV6 and SDV6. It's an oil pressure issue to help with lowering emissions. More and more manaufacturers are doing this so VAG aren't on their own!!
They're on the right path though, ruined and seized up engines make zero emissions! 🤣
I have a 2014 XF-S with the V6 Diesel - it's at 207k miles and has had no issues.

Absolutely love and appreciate these vids like you wouldn't believe , yes I know things have got crazy expensive but this is more learning about the engineering side of things for me and learning about the differences not only between different brands like audi bmw mercedes and toyota ect but it's also about learning about petrol vs diesel , probably that are caused by egr , dpf , oil dilution ect I understand but what is causing these issues that are not related to all the emissions stuff ? That's what's got me puzzled

Given that European Audi, VW, Bentley and other brand engines are made in the same plant in Hungary, are all these type of issues spread across the other brand engines. All the manufacturing plant buildings have "Audi" written on them. Good video, thank you.
Definitely a helpful video Tomas. Thank you! I have been considering whether to purchase an A8 TDI or S8 4.0T during the next few months. After watching you pull down a relatively modern TDI with only 30K miles / 50K kilometres, with that level of damage, I was not impressed. For older generation petrol engines that would be a great run in period, whilst older gen diesels would be comfortably twice that. Am definitely considering the 2015-2018 S8 or S8 Plus instead of the TDI now.
The ticking is the clock running out on the mechanical warranty :D On my 3.0 supercharged SQ5 the ticking noises are a constant concern because you never know when those timing chain guides give way. Thanks for your videos dude! Kia Ora from New Zealand!

Over 200,000km on my old 3.0t S4, guides were fine, mine was also stage2+.. Use Motul 5100 5w40, change oil more than recommended.. also from nz

30,000 km and it’s wearing out, wow. I have a 2006 Touareg 3.0 tdi with 336,000 km and still going strong! Love the car but with the problems the new ones have I’ll give them a miss!
I had a A3 1.6tdi 2015 and it was a fantastic engine. I looked after it and got a Q2 last year but petrol.

I was wondering if the same issues were present in engines with code CVUA. These are the 3.0 BiTDIs from 2016-2018 and I've been looking to buy one since last year, but the issues I see get me quite worried for the condition I'll get it at 80+ k miles.

30k miles in 6 years? That means 5k miles per year. This can mean the owner has driven this car only short distances, only in town, with lower engine speed, and he changed the oil after the seller recommendation ( 20K miles? 30000 Km?). Garanty after 6 years?. People buy A8 only to show up in town, but this car need to be used properly. Long distances, proper engine speed, proper motor temperature. I wonder if you can read how many time this motor had the right temperature? In my opinion i think you send the wrong mesage. Is nothing wrong with the engine, is something wrong with the user...

What an absolute disgrace. A 67 plate low mileage Audi with engine problems already. Audi UK ought to step in and take steps to repair this.

Are there any options for engine oil brand and specification or wear reducing additives that could help protect the premature wear that's going on in these engines. Maybe owners could take some action before the death rattle occurs. Im thinking a higher viscosity or the like.
Is there any more info on the oil pressure remap? I have a CRT engine, and I'd love to get it done, but I'm not in the UK or Europe
How are the latest EVO 3 versions, like DPXA? Am thinking of getting a 2021MY Q7 just to get the latest enginer revision in the hope some of these issues have been resolved?

Thin old oil, hard accelerations on cold engine do this kind of damage on an engine.
On my 3.0TDI, at cold start, only after 2mins the oil starts to show up on the cam if you look trought oil cap so let it idle for at least 3-5mins before start.
Mine has 261.000km and runs great but I change the oil every 6000km.
Idle = low revs = low oil pressure :D but for real now, its quite literally raining water inside a cold engine so I wouldnt advise leaving it idling that long although it probably doesnt do anyhting too bad to the engine either.. if your engine runs great its most likely due to the short oil change interval to be honest.

Depends on the engine. These modern engines restrict oil pressure so much, that it can better to drive it instantly than letting it idle. Mercedes had engines that self destucted if you let them warm up at idle...
@@Spy0nu Not saying to rev it.. but idling isnt good either. Around 1500rpm (so normal slow cruising rpm) is the best because these modern engines especially diesels just cant heat up on idle and their oil pressures are already set low (more oil = more friction = higher emissions = higher tax = higher cost = less people buying :DD)

While I know this is a different era but; The last time I thought about a diesel engine, I was about to lease a new 2002 VW Jetta TDi. In the end, I'm glad I leased a 1.8T instead.

I wouldn't trust a full service history, it all depends if the work has actually been completed.
Seen where oil filters/air filters etc haven't been replaced, yet the service records are upto date.

I assume 2nd gen 3.0 tdi are more realible than 3rd gen? I got A5 8TA with 260k km and still runs fine with very minimal chain rattle at cold start for few seconds.

It’s really difficult to hear the camshaft noise and differentiate between the injectors . It sounds complicated normal but I’m a BMW driver so totally used to that.
What's your opinion on a8 d4 4.2tdi with 385bhp? As you said you didn't had a good feedback on tdi.
I wish the owner all the best with the warranty company. Most are total sharks who will pull every trick and stunt not to pay out on any claim. Wording such ad fair wear and tear and betterment clauses normally allow them to decline most claims.

My S6 3.0 tdi 2020 with engine code DEWA just give up. 59k miles and engine just died. Audi diagnoses ? Faulty injector cause hydro lock on cylinder and bend conrode ! I know this is just an excuse to lack of oil changes, lack of oil pressure, lack of free air flow due to clogged intake and dpf etc… these engines are ticking bombs due to emissions target

The design is good. But the software and all the eco friendly mods are killing it !

@@JordzyBrev Nothing to do with German engineering and everything to do with German socialist "green" politics.. the engineers job is to make an engine around these often stupid regulations and make them at a competitive price, they only have to last while under warranty while the first (most likely a business through leasing) owner has it. After that they dont care about the 2nd to 15th owner :D

Is the 2019 A6 2.0 tdi or 2.0 tfsi a good engine in your opinion? I have had my 2007 A6 3.0 tdi ASB engine for 15 years (no isues) and fancy a change but I have been really put off on the newer 3.0 tdi's by all your excellent information. Thanks!
2.0 TDI ....best engine is from C6 around 2011 on code CAHA ..... standard 170bhp going up on stage 1 around 210-215 and more torque so engine is solid and drives really flexible..... .
I have 2017 audi a5 2.0tdi and in 110 000 miles it had around 9000 worth of repairs, luckily i had extended warranty. Most recennt one was adblue 3500 plus they had to give me courtsey car for which they paid around 2000 in 14 days. Fair to say never buying an audi without comperhensive warranty. I feel bad for the guy buying it off me.
Audi have now upgraded the parts from milk chocolate to dark chocolate 😂

A very good deterrent not buy VAG. I have passat 2.0tdi wiht DSG6 150MBT 2016 bought at 75k miles now is 140m..... knock on the wood no issues yet but at this mileage I now actually want to sell it

Does the 2.0 tdi have issues like this? My current one is an A4 quattro and has already had an adblue repair. I consider changing to a Q5 3.0 tdi but this sort of stuff concerns me considering the car is a daily.
Stay away from audis they are nice looking cars but are money pits. They all have timing chain rattle issues and coolant leaks the both 2.0 and 3.0 tdi second and third generation engines.

I can’t believe it 30k and so many issues. I had a 3.0 d3 where timing chain stretched at 135k miles but that was due to poor servicing etc still,

My one does exactly same noise I think I need to bring it to you guys I still have warranty wich can cover up to 18k so lots of money to get the car fixed 😅

For anyone wondering how to spot a Gen3 instantly, look at 1:44 - all the cross hatching and ribs on the black plastic intake manifold is a Gen3. Gen2 is smooth and just has several lines in the crook.

i watch another channel that only really works on R8`s and RS`s and S`s.
They even get work from main dealers.
They say unless the warrenty is a "OFFICIAL AUDI" warrenty its not worth the paper its written on. you have to argue to get any work done,if they do agree there is a limit to cost AND a limit to claims. all diagnostics to find the fault is paid by you.
1 guys claim was for a oil leak, they only paid for the seal!

Audi should employ Doggo as a designer.
I'm sure with Doggo's TPS parts knowledge and the amount of broken Audi's with low milage that Doggo works on, mainly playing catch with broken timing kits, chains and camshafts, that at this point Doggo can do a better job than Audi. Absolutely crazy the amount of faults these expensive 'premium' cars have Vor Sprung Doh it's broke again
Sadly I HAVE THE SAME ENGINE CODE with same noise (not as bad .. yet) .. still have platinum warranty from the deales, which should cover this. What would you sugest to do? :(

Irrespective of the oil pressure management map problem it's a flawed design with such a small gear flank taking so much of the load. Audi should at a minimum be providing the upgraded camshafts F.O.C.
Sounds like 30,000 city driving lots of idle, dpf exhaust clogging up. Take it for 30 minutes Italian high speed free tune up, then recheck

I have a 2020 a6 allroad and it has the same sound but I intend to completely ignore it. I want to see how long it runs until it's dead. Let's say an experiment for everyone who has this dreadful engine 😅

30k - 9k worth of work already? hope Audi not cutting corners...if the car had done 100k then I'd be sayin this is ok...not 30k miles...but whatever the outcome from the warranty company, this needs to be done...could the oil pressure ( or lack thereof ) be a factor?
