The Holy Roman Empire was actually one of the most powerful kingdoms for much of the medieval ages. It just had absolutely zero to do with the Roman empire itself. In short, Charlemagne, king of the Franks, just named his territory that to solidify his rule and when he died, his lands were split between his sons. One half became France and the other kept the old name (The Holy Roman Empire). Then Napoleon happened and now it's just Germany.
Edit: Obviously it's a lot more complicated than that, but it's all you really need to know to understand what Blue means when he mentions the HRE.

well, it was already kinda torn by the time Napoleon came to reunite the southern states, and stuff was already going down with Prussia and Austria, and it was from them that later on what we today consider to be Germany formed, originally under Prussian rule. Frankly, Napoleon had barely anything to do with that, from what I remember from history-class, except for maybe instilling a greater desire to reunite in the southern states.

On Pope Francis’s rock album, he had literally no part in its creation. Someone else made it for him, setting recordings of his (spoken) speeches, and singing bits of prose and poetry he’d written elsewhere, then gifted it to the Pope as a ghostwritten album. Literally all Francis did was accept the gift and allow the actual creator to go forward with releasing it under his name.
Still hilarious that it exists tho.

For solid 400 years the Holy Roman Empire was actually the powerhouse of European politics.
It's only really in 1300's, especially with the Golden Bull in 1356 that the authority of the Emperor was greatly reduced and waned over the centuries until it was nothing more than a fancy title...
For a fat chunk of the Medieval Period the Emperor of Charlemagne's realm was the most powerful political figure in Europe, only ever equaled by the Pope himself through Catholic Church.

14:30: Fun Fact: Pope Celestine V was mostly famous for being the first Pope to voluntarily relinquish the Papacy... but while modern people, such as yourself, recognize that as a good thing, recognizing that it was someone realizing that they were not qualified for the job and wanting to be allowed to leave a position they'd knew they'd mess up at, people back then literally couldn't comprehend someone who would just walk away from all that power, and thought he was either planning something (as the guy immediately after Celestine thought he would try to do) or that he was a "weakling" and a "coward."
In fact, Dante Alighieri in his _Divine Comedy_ originally sentenced Celestine V to the punishment of being forever barred from entering Hell proper, instead just waiting for all eternity outside the Gate with it's now famous epigram of "All Hope Abandon, Ye Who Enter This Place."
However, exactly 4 or 5 years after Dante's _Comedy_ was written and printed throughout Europe, Celestine would later be canonized, making him a saint... which presented an unfortunate problem in later re-prints of the book, that had to change the quote, making it more vague for readers, leading to some people thinking that Dante was talking about Pontius Pilate, the man whose act of cowardice (i.e., trying to get people to realize the absurdity of wanting to kill someone who merely claimed to be God by letting them choose to either free Jesus or a known murderer, Barabbas; then after that failed, stalling on the sentencing until he straight up told the Pharisees that he 'Washed his hands of the matter' and 'Jesus was _their_ problem now') led to Jesus suffering for the sins of everybody who lived and would ever live afterwards.
But nope; originally, it was a condemnation of Celestine V.
The monk who was only guilty of being concerned about the state of the Church, and merely wanted the Cardinals to stop dragging their feet and elect somebody, _ANYBODY_ at all to put an end to the problems plaguing the lands.
He just never expected that they would choose HIM.

Any strictly human institution with a history like this would've *died* by now. *Age* isn't the only factor here. It's surviving all the chaos from within and without. As I already mentioned, just surviving the first century is unprecedented. Small sects that are actively persecuted generally don't survive after the death of their founders. *Especially* if that persecution involves *the death penalty.*

It is also especially difficult to claim actual divine support for the Catholic Church in specific rather than Christianity in general as well imo. Like sure, it is from the beginning of Christianity to know if you start with Saint Peter. But could you truly say there was a Catholic Church as we know it now before the Great Schism? Even should one consider various breaks in communion leading to the creation of the Church of the East and Oriental Orthodox Church to simply be secessions from the Catholic Church (which I wouldn't agree with but let's put that aside for now) could one truly call the early pre-Nicene Christian Church the same institution as the current Roman Catholic Church?
