  • Hi y'all. As you can tell by the title, this is a difficult vet tech Q&A and it's titled so because this video was so much harder to make than I thought it was going to be.
As always, none of what I say in this video is meant to discourage anyone from becoming a vet tech. It's just meant to show you bits and pieces of what this job is really like behind all of the cute and cuddly critters we get to handle.

My cat was very sick but I don’t want to go into detail because it’s so hard to talk about. It was going to cost me $3000 to help her. I remember so many people telling me not to spend money and go into debt on a cat that is dying. It was so heart breaking and I had no support from anyone. Having a pet to me is more than having an animal around that I feed. She is my best friend and I love her. I raised her from almost the time she was born. She is my family. And people don’t understand that. For example, Would you tell someone with cancer just to die and that they aren’t worth the debt? No. So I obviously had to take out care credit to pay. And I am in debt. And it sucks. But I could never live with myself knowing that there could’ve been a chance for my cat to live and continue to be happy. And THANKFULLY she lived. She got healthy again. I did everything I could. I prayed and cried all the time. And she’s currently running around my living room playing. And the vet techs like you, were the only support I had through this process. Yes the vet was there and was great. But it was the vet techs I saw everyday when I visited my cat at the hospital, it was the vet techs who called and texted me to update me, it was the vet techs who told me they sang to her and gave her lots of love. Thank you for what you do

MVM silva helped me as well. My dog was suffering so much. I still miss her everyday and it’s been 3 years. Hardest part was I didn’t get a chance to say goodbye. My parents took her while I was at work. They knew how much I loved her and they didn’t want me to be there when it happened.

I had one owner who just didnt care at all that his cat was being put down. He was so quick to sign the paper and when the doctor asked if wanted to say any last words to her he just said no. I felt so bad for the cat I felt I had to mourn her for him

it's so sad. I had a couple bring in two cats (perfectly healthy) to be put down because they kept peeing outside of their litter box. I cried so hard. And no, they didn't stay for the procedure. I held those babies so tight.

I started to ugly cry when you mentioned pets not having their owners when being euthanized. I held my kitty Dax in my arms, (trying not to cry my eyes out) when he was euthanized (he was going through kidney failure and the vet said they couldn't save him). I felt like my heart was being ripped out because he had been my baby and best friend for 13 years. Now I have a new baby boy (Stinker) and if and when the time comes, I will hold him in my arms as well.

My cat had to be euthanized...and. ..we...left cuz...they didn't even ask if we...wanted to be there...so ...I did not say anything cuz I thought maybe we weren't allowed. Next day...I cried...and this was when I was still in school. There were times when I went straight to my backyard to call him after school(it was a routine). Then as soon as I opened the back door ...I remembered oh yeah...we had to get him euthanized. So depressing. And he was a stray cat. I named him Coal. Sorry for long comment.

It’s hard to have a pet come back from kidney failure cause it’s what helps them filter out the bad things. It’s happened to a lot of older pets in our clinic. I’m so sorry you had to go through that with your cat. And I’m glad that you were able to spend 13 years with your cat 💗

I cry every now and then ESPECIALLY when the dogs look like my pups that have passed. We are human afterall we can break from time to time. But practicing how to cope is key. And sometimes just giving a hug to someone that needs it (very awkward for me) it makes you and them feel better. 😊

    • @nolongerhuman13
      @nolongerhuman13 Před 4 lety +3

You cannot make yourself immune to the feeling of empathy bcuz the people there will sense that you seem cold. Everyone cries at one time doing these or another. It’s human nature. And if you’re an animals person then that’s double good. I would suggest you get the job part time before you go to school for it ( if you meant dream job as being a vet ). It’s a lot of work and mistakes you can make can cost lives and get you into trouble. I say that bcuz we have people we work with that don’t pay attention to what they are doing but everyone else is paying attention to them. When you’re surrounded by animals and animal lovers you will feel at home. If you start to endanger them or make foolish moves that could have serious repercussions. You get fired real quick. We had one a month ago and another one has made her last mistake this last week. She doesn’t care about what she is doing and it shows. We had a meeting about her. It’s always good people around you. But at the end of the day we are not doing this to get rich. We are doing it bcuz we live animals and when someone is spotted that has something going on and it’s interfering with that. Then they have to go. It’s not the job to allow drama in your life to mess up the welfare or wellbeing of someone else’s baby and reason to wake up in the morning. Don’t end up getting hit with the juice Dexter style in the basement. Lmao.

I work with a hospice/holistic care for pets but usually you can base off the owners how big of a reaction you can have to the euth. Crying isn't frowned upon but just making sure you aren't showing more upset than the owners themselves because it's for them and their pet.

When in my last year of high school I swore off ever becoming a vet. The thought of putting down a pet makes my cry. I thought I was too emotional to be a vet. When a cat I took in from the streets had to be put down due to chronic kidney failure, the vet and the vet techs who had him on fluids prior to this were there. I noticed the doctor tearing up. When I asked her if it gets easier she just shook her head. My cat passed away purring. They had me leave out the back. When I turned around, I saw the doc carrying my cat in her arms and the vet techs at the end of the call crying.
I realized that day that I can be a vet. I will be a vet.

    1. Please discuss responsible breeding more. It’s more than health tests genetic testing and contracts.
    2. When someone does not want to stay sedate the animal first. This way they are there until the animal is asleep then euthanize after. It goes a lot smoother
    3. I agree with the owner education factor.
Just thoughts from an internal medicine and emergency technician.

You should research clinics where you want to work and ask them if they do all the procedures. Some clinics are against them. You don't have to work for a clinic that goes against your morals and values. My cousin worked several clinics before finding the one she's at now which, If I remember right, do not perform any of the procedures you listed.

Julie Gomez, I was 20 seconds into your video and I could feel the compassion and kindness in your heart. Thank you so much for sharing this video... I only would have liked to have found it sooner. I've been a tech for 10 years and relate to every single thing you said, and totally agree with how frustrating it can be to engage some owners in any type of educational 2min dialogue on ways to better care for their pets. At times its just... stupefying. We deal with so many different types of personalities, both 2 and 4 legged. It's a lot of juggling, but I wouldn't trade it for the world, and I imagine you feel the same way. Bless your heart and

I appreciate that your speaking honestly and from the heart about the field. It's so hard at times especially in the medical field since we truly care about the patients to deal with the continued stresses of the job particularly during the end of life processes. We do as a community need to come together to help support one another and be a driving force within our own communities. Having the drive to education others especially the public is always an ongoing process. But don't ever feel it is a waste. It is not trust me being in the field for sometime I have learned that eventually you may not get through to everyone but even if you get through to some that does make a difference and in time that multiples. I am truly grateful for what you do in your career and on this channel. Keep Up the Awesome Work!! I also want to thank you for your earlier tips on Spandex shorts, Great idea!!!

For some people the sad things you go over in this video might discourage them from wanting to pursue a veterinary career, but you've inspired me to pull the trigger and do it. Seeing your genuine love for the animals makes me want to be there for them as well and make their lives just a little better. I already deal with depression, I don’t think that’s something that will ever go away, but I know I want to help people and I do love animals. I just recently decided to pursue a career in veterinary technology and I am so glad to see people like you exist in this world. One of the main reasons I want to become a vet tech is because people are so poorly educated on animals and don't understand that they aren't something you can just give up because you're bored or become an inconvenience. Animals are a lifetime commitment and I wish more people understood that. Thank you for your effort to help educate people. ♡♡ People like you restore my hope for the world ♡♡

Julie I love you for creating this video(Vet tech for 21 years here) I can honestly say the biggest reason for a lot of really bad animal cases but not all are the clients not wanting or being able to go the financial distance with their pets. Sadly it’s the truth and then some clients have no problem going online and just brutally taking the loss of their pets out on the practice. AI is a very specialized skill and I think should only be performed at a veterinary school. I have worked in emergency rooms, specialists and at a general practice. This is not an easy career so please think about going into this industry understanding that it is completely exhausting and very emotionally taxing. The routine surgeries I absolutely hate the most are declaws and ear cropping. I will not even work at a place that crops ears. For those of you that declaw your cats chew on this! Sofas go out of style toes don’t!! And it can very well change your sweet cat into a defensive cat for the rest of its life.
Woooo the tears girl. I can’t. Anyways. Julie get back to me.

I was crying with you Julie .. one time I had a Newfoundland (he was a big boy named Walter about 170) and was diagnosed with bone cancer .. Walter was deteriorating quickly and the owners had a put them down it was sad because the Day of the euthanasia the owners cannot be present and left him while we were drawing up drugs. The poor dog was going crazy and looking out the window to see where his owners were. I never cried so much at my hospital before it broke my heart into pieces.

Procedures that bother me the most are unnecessary/cosmetic surgeries: AI, ear trims, tail crops, debarking, declaws. Thankfully, we dont do debarking and have stopped doing AI. When I move soon, I am hoping to find a clinic that also doesnt do the ears, claws, or tails either.

I worked front desk at the vet for two years and I was tearing up too when you were talking about euthanasia. It definitely the toughest part of the job. Its been a year since I've worked at the vet, and let me tell you, the world inside vet vs outside the vet are totally different. People do not know how to take care of their pets. The education of pet care is lacking outside of the vet. I learned so much working at the vet.
Overall, I loved the job. It's always a wild day working at the vet. But yes for me personally, because the money stability isn't there, with the glass ceiling being about $45k for a tech.. I just couldn't stay. Like you said, unfortunately techs are severely underpaid its crazy. You do so much work! And you protect the doctor by taking the bites lol Again it wasn't a long term career choice for ME. I feel the money isn't worth the risk of potential zoonotic diseases, radiation, and bites. That being said, I would totally work at an animal hospital again, but I would consider a job in veterinary practice management instead.

As a fellow vet I really appreciate you telling it how it is. I agree with you on owners not being present when their pet is passing. It's very hard and it never gets easier. Also yes some people should not have pets. I work in a shitty area and it shows at time. Backyard breeders and just pets who aren't well cared for. It's not an easy job and it takes a special type of person to do it.

Fellow vet tech here! I'm so glad you talked about pet parents not being in the room with their pets during a euth. I used to work at a shelter where people would be able to just drop off their pets to be euthed (has to have medical reasons, ect) but they'd just drop their pets off and leave us to do the rest and it was always so horrible to have them worry about where their owners were and not knowing that they'll never be able to see them again. Every animal that has ever been euthed has always known love in their final moments whether it's myself holding them, pets, kisses, ect I will not allow them especially stays to never know love and kindness!

I also work at an animal rescue center so...yeah...high five for that. I feel the same about how people should need to take a test to own a pet. I would have to take in far fewer animals at the shelter if that was the case, let alone cases avoided in the clinic. Really good video

Aww made me tear up when u spoke about euthanasia. And yes you're right people deal differently, etc. I am w u on that at least saying goodbye and being there. And teens maybe they just werent close to that pet idk why they would do that :/
I wish I was able to save my baby but I didn't have the money. And as she was aggressive the vet had said even if hospitalized it would be difficult to cure her from terminal illness. It was the hardest thing to be there holding her and knowing it was the last day I'd see her, touch her, be with her. I still feel as tho I failed her. The vet cried a bit too when it was over, said he put down his cat look like mine. If I could go back I would of tried to give her a chance. I was just in a bad position :( mentally, emotionally, financially, etc. I am very thankful for every moment I got to spend with her. Every time I came from work and was greeted by her. All the talks. All the love. All the lessons. Cute thing when i cried she would come over and rub herself on me :) I will always love her.
You should mention pet insurance. I bought it for my 2 new babies and I feel better knowing that I will get help if they get injured or sick. There are deductibles but u can choose how much and also what coverage limit.
I am sooo soo so thankful for the true caring people in your field. Thank you for all you do for all animals 💜

Especially euthanizing a pet, which breaks my heart every time and YES EDUCATION EDUCATION EDUCATION. You should make a series about beginners education in certain pets “ Hamster Ownership 101,” “ parakeet ownership 101” etc. I agree with everything you said in your video completely and I relate so much to your frustration. I feel like especially with the more popular (and cheaper) pets like small rodents and budgies are misconceived to be interpreted as ‘decoration pets’ that don’t need much care or attention even though you can’t be farther from the truth. The vet bills and food and care I need to pay for just my Netherland Dwarf rabbit alone is more than all of my other animals combined. I think a lot of people don’t take their animals for annual checkups because they think it’s optional when it really isn’t.

It's really refreshing to find another tech/nurse who feels the same way about owners and their lack of education, their lack of insight into what they're putting their pets through and of course what it's like to be the only calming voice and loving hand for an animal that is being put to sleep. We have a client who the majority of us actually believe is making her dog sick just so she can come into our clinic and get attention, for herself. It's as if she wants us all to dote on her and tell her what a loving, caring dog mum she is because she's doing so much to make sure her dog is okay. The problem is, when her dog is hospitalised with us for a time, she seems to get so much better, rapidly. Not just because we know what we're doing and we're providing her with the care and support she needs, but it's as if just being away from her human makes her better. Then, days later, she'll be back and we all wonder, what on earth are you doing at home to this poor dog, she should NOT be so sick. Then, of course, there was a girl who had a dog that took her attention away from another dog in the home who ended up getting injured. In front of everyone, she yelled at the dog "this is all your fault, if you hadn't gotten in the way, this wouldn't have happened" Then, as the dog tried to get closer to her, she yelled "No, get away from me"...anyway, the list goes on. Thank you for sharing. Sorry, it's taken me so long to find you. x

If it helps, people that have come back from the brink of death or come out of comas have said that all they felt near the end was an indescribable feeling of peace. There was no pain, no fear, and no sadness. They just felt happy and accepting of death. I’d like to imagine it’s the same with animals and therefore the last feeling they have would not be fear, but peace.

That is natural death, the body loses senses one by one. They stop wanting to eat/drink, then smell and vision and touch. It happens to the old and terminal. When you take action to cause death there is no natural progression, just breathing/organ failure etc

I agree 100% with everything you said. I'm going through the Vet tech program now and understand about the whole loving your job bit. When I was on externship for VA, I assisted with euthanasias. I cried every time, especially when it was a much older couple and the man broke down. And yes, people need to take responsibility when owning a pet. A pet is like a kid; they get into things, get sick, have medical bills...etc. My husband and I have 5 dogs, all rescues. One had to have a lens put on her eye due to a corneal ulcer and another has to have eye drops for the rest of her life because her third eye lid had to be removed (both eyes). That stuff adds up....so animals are definitely a responsibility.

I am planning to become a vet tech and am enrolling into technical college straight out of highschool. I own several animals of my own, and have lost many many more, three to euthanasia and two guinea pigs to natural death, aswell as having to adopt out my other guineas when i moved (9 pets in total). But while they were alive and with me, I spoiled the hell out of my animals and loved them to peices. I still do that for the ones that are with me now. Shes very right in that not every should have a pet or should have one at the time they want to get one at the very least. These questions are very near and dear to me and im glad somebody is vlogging about it. Vets and vet techs see the best and worst of what pets and owners have to offer. And they dont do it for money by any means.
