  • Hiii friends! This is an honest vet tech talk video where I tell you the truth about being a vet tech. Whether you're thinking about becoming a vet tech yourself some day or are just curious about working in this field, just know that this video is NOT meant to discourage you! I made this video to talk about the reality of this job and to show you that it's not always easy and it's not always a fun time... BUT IT IS ALWAYS WORTH IT!! Helping to heal and save animals always makes it worth it, so keep that in mind and hang in there during those tough times!!
About my guinea pig: Fizz is a rescue guinea pig! He came to me out of a bad situation- I did not get him from a pet store or Craigslist. Yes I know his nails are a little long in this video, and I took him to work for a nail trim just a few days after lol. Also, I know his cage is small for his size. It's the one that he came in, and I'm working on getting a bigger/nicer setup for him! If you know of somewhere online where I can order a nice cage for him, please let me know! Because my local Petsmart's and Petco's haven't had anything good enough for him! Lol

Hey guys, thanks so much for watching! If you’re here to voice your concerns about Fizz, I made a whole video talking about his new setup and my routine for caring for him. Here is the link, if you’d like to see the new and improved cage! ❤️

Just found this video. I am trying to be a vet tech myself! I have a passion for animals and trying to help them. I wanted to point out that in this video you didn’t once say that if someone couldn’t handle something (i.e. not liking blood or the clients etc) you responded with “it’s something you have to get over or learn to work through it” and never did you say “this job isn’t for you”, which I really appreciate. Because sometimes the idea of those things are off putting, but it doesn’t mean you’re not capable of doing the job, you just need to learn how to work through it. I really enjoyed this video and will look through your channel for more about vet tech because you’ve got a good, realistic attitude about it.

During my placement I had quite a few animals pass, either naturally or with veterinary assistance. One of my critical patients, whom I'd worked hard to keep alive for 2 days, had sadly passed overnight in the hospital. She had been HBC and had major internal injuries. We had her on fluids and even gave her a blood transfusion the first day she was presented. When she died, her backside was cacked in haemorrhagic faeces and I wanted to clean her up before her family came in to pick her up and take her home for burial. She was gone, but I just had to clean her. It was not only my job but it was my honour, I had bonded with her in such a short time and I felt I owed it to her to make her beautiful again for her family. I washed her body, I clipped her backend to remove the cacked fur and crusty bloody stool then washed her again. I even groomed and blow dried her and sprayed a nice aromatic coat spray on her before placing her on a nice blanket and table for her family to say goodbye. It didn't matter that it was messy and smelly. I love my job.

Thank you so much for being real about the job. I can't stand the sugarcoated explanations. Each job has its pros and cons, but so few people talk about what, well, sucks about them. Very greatly appreciated! The part about the blood is what I have questioned myself about, but you're right in saying your mind can switch into a different mode without you consciously being aware of it. Again, thanks!

Also i read through some comments and I was worried about being too old to become a vet tech (or start late) will effect getting a job, but I see many out there are way more older than me and they still work hard to try to get there. And that really encouraged me and made me feel a lot better. Thank you you and everyone❤️🙏

Anyway, I LOVE animals and want to work in animal rescue. I know it will be a hard job, but I really want to help animals....if only the pay was better.....I feel like I will be stressed my whole life because of my job and the lack of income...but I just love animals.

You didn’t touch on the often toxic office environment. I feel like thats the most prominent problem within the field. Maybe youve had better experiences than I have, but in school, and at every clinic ive worked with, i constantly hear about other who experience (and experience for myself) the catty mean girl culture. The gossip the favoritism the degrading comments and cliques within clinics, it makes the job miserable....

Loved the video, I’m gonna be trying to become a vet assistant when I get out of high school and then after getting my associates at a 2 year community college program I’ll then be able to be a vet tech in the state of Texas and then the final goal is become a certified vet and then finally pass the state vet test and get my stethoscope and hopefully during all this I can find a job and get a lot of experience as a a vet assistant and vet tech. That way I’ll hopefully be able be able to get a higher paying job if im a certified vet tech instead of not being one. I’m sure that gets rly looked at and I’m sure that alone could have it to where your not starting off at minimum wage. But most importantly I need to have a decent bit of experience from what I keep hearing online and on CZcams from other vet techs and assistants like yourself who also say the best way to get started is by not looking for a job but by volunteering at a vet shelter, clinics or, hospitals, etc. So my plan is in the next few weeks and months I’m gonna be calling and going to these different animal/ vet places and volunteer to literally do anything and just talk to them the whole way through what I was thinking about my career plan in life and mabye even get sum advice from them too. First thing I need to focus is getting out of high school 😭, I do have bad grades but I think over the next 2 years I can get pack up to atleast 3.3 gpa before I graduate then hopefully I can get get that even higher at my 2 year program. And hopefully I’ll be able to find steady volunteer work while all of this is happening and apply for a job at sum of the places Im volunteering at and hopefully get a job that’s the career plan in my life. I wouldn’t mind your or any other vet techs/assistants what they think about the idea I would actually really appreciate it. I know this is long as hell but, I’ve just been rly lost and have no idea what smith do in my life these past 2 years of high school but I’m 17 now and I am finally taking some action in life and videos like these really do help people like me out who have known they have a passion in animals most of their but just don’t know how to go about or what to actually do, and I just wanted to let you know that🙏🙏. I’m not even sure anyone will read this but if you’ve gotten to here, how about you leave a reply in the comments about my or your ideas and experiences I should be expecting in the veterinarian technician/assistants world🙌🏼. Would love to hear what sum of you have to say.

Ha, before the end of the video I was about to ask about the clients. Because I want to get into the animal care field, and I know about the gory stuff, blood, puke, poop, germs, etc. BUT the part I was mostly concerned about was the HUMANS that bring in the animals. Like when you mention the dog fights, I would find it hard to hold my tongue sometimes when it comes to that kind of scenario. Taking care of the bloodied up doggo, no problem. Tell me to not get angry at the a**hole that put the dogs through that torture, a little tough... But I appreciate what you and the rest of the vet staff do. I got really lucky in getting a vet tech job. I brought my cat in for a spay and there were some complications so I kept bringing her back. The doctor started talking to me personally asking what I want to eventually do and where I go to school. She said they were hiring if I wanted to apply. Mind you, I had never worked at a vet before so zero experience. Of course I took that opportunity. The clinic I worked at had some drama and the manager quit along with all the other techs. Well I had to take on most of the managers responsibilities for a good 5 months (we just hired a manager a month ago) and I am now the senior tech after being there ONE FULL YEAR on February 21st and after taking on so much responsibility and still not being certified I can comfortably say I make $13.25 after a year with no prior experience.

Respect is a huge issue in the field. Because so many places don't have registered/licensed/credentialed technicians, they don't appreciate when they do have one. I once had an assistant ask me why I even went to school...yikes! We're so underpaid for the knowledge and skills and schooling we have. I can't wait for the day titles are nationally regulated and techs become RVNs and everyone else is an assistant! That'll be the day!

Beth Christa with surgery make sure you eat first and drink water the morning you know you'll be in surgery or observing and don't feel bad. If you feel light headed or sick let the doctor know and sit down immediately. Don't walk to another area and although it looks funny, if you put your head between your knees, it'll help the blood flow so you won't be light headed anymore. Also don't look into the surgery lights 😂

The mask on the dog for spaying is not the common method of anesthesia in vet med as there are safer, more effective means of anesthetizing, including injectable general anesthetic or inhalent anesthesia via endotracheal (breathing) tube.
At other clinics, you'll get a feel for good standards of patient care, both "routine wellness" and critical care techniques, knowledge, and skills compared to practice methods you wouldn't retain, utilize daily, and wouldn't choose to practice nursing or veterinary medicine that way.

tiffany salinas Vet school is much more complicated than Vet Tech school.
Vet Tech: At least for me there really nothing to getting into vet tech school. . the quickest way is to find a kind of trade school that is AVMA accredited(important!) for vet tech, this way you will get only classes on what you need to be a Vet tech. You'll be in and out within 2 years. high school diploma, Vet tech school, extern, license exam with passing score, career! Process may vary according to state.
Veterinarian: Find a college with the veterinarian program, get a bachelor degree in biology or a certain approved science, get into pre vet school, then vet school/extern, license exam with passing score, DEA license, career. Totaling of like 6-8 years times for all that. Now, vet school is hard as in competitiveness so you need like straight A's or very close so do good! Process may very according to state.

So I would like to know if you can tell me how much dosage is needed for a 110 pound dog or how much do you increase according to the weight of the dog so that i can get educated and prevent any accidents in the future.
