The Black Crowes had the potential to go from being amazingly great to iconic in a generational way, but sadly the in-feuding between the Robinson Brothers become a huge distraction, and was probably the biggest factor they didn’t make that leap.
Their cover of Otis Redding’s “Hard To Handle” is amazing! “She Talks To Angels” is so soulful for an acoustic song, and “Twice As Hard” & “Jealous Again” both hit hard!

All those unfortunate rock star / family band issues are true, in addition, some heavy substance abuse w/ some members... But, also, a factor that isn't considered or talked about enough, when trying to figure out how this band didn't gain more 'popularity' ... The first big tour break was on a tour called monsters of Rock, with all long time legendary bands, mostly metal... Although as the first opening act of a five or six band concert they did hold their own... Was also at a time when hair metal was fading away... And the Seattle invasion began... There just didn't quite seem to be a niche for a southern blues rock band from Atlanta Georgia... Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, Candlebox, Mudhoney, etc completely consumed the music industry for over a decade... And, it's unfortunate, and I am one of the biggest Black Crowes fans there are, I appreciate their catalog, that certainly has very good music, they just did not return to the mainstream much with radio play not a lot of MTV video success, but they are very successful touring & smoking a lot of weed. 💨

Using the Stones, Humble Pie and Faces as a blueprint , the BC's brought early 70s into the early 90's. Drummer Steve Gormans book details the dysfunction and massive drug usage that would derail them over and over from being even bigger than they were. But they brought the swagger. 1st 2 albums are true classics of the genre.

The Black Crowes "She Talks to Angels" left an indelible stamp on the sounds of the 90's. The Stones resemblance was no doubt intentional and quite well done, right down to the backing vocals and the Billy Preston styled keyboard flourishes towards the end. "Jealous Again" is another banger from them. Who knows really why their popularity fizzled out as the decade wore on, too much early success maybe and they fell apart with distractions like so many other great bands, maybe the soundscape changed after "Smells Like Teen Spirit" blew up the scene and the fans moved on from their style of roots rock.

Mick and Steven wish they could sign this well. But yup! They are back out on the road with a mostly new lineup, and they're still the most rock and roll, rock and roll band out there. Ive seen them 2 dozen times, the show this summer was among the loudest ive ever heard. These guys bring it live like few other.
A lot of people are recommending songs from shake your money maker, id spend the time listening to the first 4 albums completely. The growth between symm and shmc is amazing, amorica pushed creativity and had no big hits, but some of the fans very favorite songs. Three snakes and one charm (album 4) is perhaps the best album from a creative standpoint. Lions and By your side are both great, by your side was an attempt at a more "commercial" sound. They then went on a hiatus and came back 7ish years later with Warpaint which has become my personal favorite. Then to top it off, they recorded a live 2disc studio album in front of a small audience in levon helms famous barn.
Before they went on the second hiatus,, the dropped another 2disc album of a huge selection of their songs, re-recorded as acoustic songs with added musicians on certain songs. Its a masterpiece, especially in the jamming portions.
Now the two brothers have grown up. They've healed their rift and are back on the road. Rumors are out there that they've had secret studio time.
    This is a SPECIAL band.

In October 1999, the band was joined by Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page for two pairs of shows in New York and Los Angeles, and also at the Centrum Centre in Worcester, Massachusetts, yielding a live release, Live at the Greek on TVT Records. Due to contractual issues with Columbia, Live at the Greek did not feature any of the band's songs performed with Page. The collaboration led to a more extensive tour with Page and The Who in summer 2000, during which Pipien was replaced by Greg Rzab. Following the tour, singer Chris Robinson married actress Kate Hudson,[16] before heading back to the studio to record the band's sixth studio album.

Their first 2 albums in the early 90’s were absolute fire, but unfortunately fighting among siblings along with Chris’ heroin use caused the band to break up. Their first two albums were great. They were one of the very best bands around in the early 90's. They couldn't maintain the songwriting after that (my opinion), though they did still have some very good songs. And you got it exactly right, rock and roll infused with some soul and funk. When thy came along it was the end of the hair metal days and they were completely unlike any other band. They're more of a throwback to the 60's and 70's. They weren't trying to follow any trends, just playing what they loved to play. They teamed up with Jimmy Page for a tour maybe 20 years ago, and they played several Zeppelin songs as well as their own material. I wish I would have seen one of those shows. There are some videos from that on CZcams.

This is an example of what Keith Richard refers to as "the Ancient Art of Weaving". Every one playing off of and around each other, rather than over each other.. Great stuff.
