Ian Astbury was on the international scene before Axl. IMHO, The Cult is one of the most overlooked rock n roll bands. Every album has several standout cuts. Check out songs like Revolution, Love Removal Machine, Efdie (Ciao Baby), Heart of Soul just to name a few.
I went and saw Guns n Roses when they first came out for their Appetite for Destruction tour. They were the opening act for The Cult. Saw that show in Danville Illinois in 88'.
Matt Sorum drummed for both bands. Cult were way before GnR.
I can’t stand Axl Rose. He’s a whinging , entitled, piece of mule dung, and his voice is like fingernails on the blackboard of my soul. Ian Astbury doesn’t sing through his tear ducts, but from his gut, more like Jim Morrison..
Absolutely! Eddie is one of my favs by the band
Love Removal Machine is what turned me on to The Cult. Been a fan ever since.
This song just soars.
It is, so sadly, never mentioned as one of the greatest rock songs ever written. It honestly is.
It's pure passion one can feels in his bones and soul. I heard it for the first time when I was 16 and my drum instructor's band covered. I was never the same.
Certainly one of the best guitar riffs of all time. Unforgettable!
Duffy knocking it out on a Gretsch ? Damn right.@@cefngwyn
on a gretsch ffs@@cefngwyn
It's a song that will last forever , unlike some of the crap today
Dead right!
There isn't a radio that can play this song loud enough.
Or many cult songs !
Another '80s classic that sounds best LOUD.
One of the best rock songs of all time.
Easily..
So true... this is as I think as far you can strech rock without beeing right out heavy metal... a thin ice I know but still..
This version soars!
I dragged my husband to the Warfield in San Francisco to see the Cult. A music ‘snob’ he was reluctant. He was more blown away that I was. The power of the live performance was almost too much for me to take!
The Warfield is a nice music venue; I saw 'Love Janice' there about 18 years ago with a friend.
I saw The Cult open for Billy Idol in ‘86. They blew Billy off the stage!🖖🏼
I agree 💯 - I saw the same tour!
Duuuude ,so did I. Saratoga NY... Christ I remember it like yesterday ..great times...man we rocked it!
The Cult way before Guns and Roses. Also way better.
I saw them on that tour. Couldn’t get tickets for the show opening for Billy, but the day of the concert they announced they would do a club show after opening.
I called my buddy who was also a fan and he was sceptical about getting tickets. But my girlfriend and I went to the “box office” which was a booth in The Bay in Toronto. Lucked out and got the tix and god damn what a show. At the end Ian took the mic stand and just destroyed the neon lights over the stage in the club during Born to be Wild. Never forget it, in part because the batteries in my camera died so I could get any pics.
There’s no way
Billy Idol is my man
Such an underrated catalog full of Gems. Ian Astbury is the ultimate front man. ❤ The Cult
Robert Plant says “hold my beer”.
@AnthonyWilliams-ew3wp Robert Plant is another ultimate front man. I have about 10 in this category.
Of course he's underrated, the world drags him down.
This is one of these tracks where the band must have just known they had created GOLD - I can only imagine the excitement around the rehearsal space
Knowing Billy Duffy he probably looked pissed off and unimpressed, lol.
Love The Cult! Saw them live about 9 years ago. Great show.
For the record, "Peace Dog" is a sneaky good tune of theirs.
They are still doing it today. Their last couple albums were great.
hehe ...the Garage...
It's not just the singing and song it's the leg work.
Any dude rocking puffy pirate sleeves looking cool is cool.
This is one of those songs that when it comes on in the car NO ONE is allowed to talk. You can sing along, but no talking! 🤣
Yep! 👊🏻
Indeed!! Well said. SHHH :)
I never realized that there was a full length version of this song! I’ve been listening to the edited version for decades!!!
The cult is tragically underrated. Such a great band and this song is one of their best.
I saw these guys live in 1986 or 87, they opened for Billy Idol. Ian was SO drunk! It was hilarious. He kept yelling "THIS SONG HAS BALLS!!!"
As the lead guitarist in a tribute to The Cult, unsurprisingly Im a huge fan and agree they are so underrated..and don;t forget the fifth member, that beautiful white Gretsch guitar!
Also the Roland jazz chorus 😊
Huge fan here too, one of my favourites from 80s. What a great job you have!!
This is one of those songs when it comes on the car radio you just crank it ALL the way up !
One of my favourite songs of all time ❤
OMG Harri! You are reacting to the extended version of this song. Thank you! Nobody ever reacts to the long version of Sanctuary.
@dathorndike4908 You're welcome -- OUR pleasure! I chose this version specifically for it's length -- bang for the buck, too!! ! Who doesn't like 6+ minutes of Sanctuary!?

@ 00:09 They do when I'm a patron on his channel!
This song is in my Top 25 playlist. It just feels good.
Billy's riff on that Gretsch White Falcon is legendary!!!!
Agreed
His voice is outstanding.
This song stands high above in any selection!!!
Yes, it does -- thank you!
If I am cooking in the kitchen, listening to my play list. My wife will always shout " Turn up the volume". When this track comes on.
Big cult fan here. This is my first time watching you. I really like your style. You have a kind and classy demeaner. God bless.
Fire Woman, another of their greatest songs. A must.
czcams.com/video/jAw56pjKfaM/video.html 👊🏻
Great Rock Band
Great Vocals
Great Guitarist
Wonderful Bass
Killer Drums
Criminally Underrated
If you didn’t already Check out
Fire Woman
It’s a Great Song
Fire Woman is equally as good as this tune for sure!!
and love removal machine

I got the "Love" album when it first came out because I heard The Cult on college radio back then . It's a good album , and the title track has some pretty good moments . But in comparison to the musicianship of this song , their "guest drummer" on the album left A LOT to be desired .

Ian Asturbury hit the scene in 81-82 and hit big (this albulm) around '85. GnR hit in late '87 and Axel was a huge fan. GnR later stole The Cults third drummer. I actually picked up guitar because I wanted to sound like Billy Duffy (The Cult's guitarist) when everyone else wanted to sound like Eddie Van Halen. I also wanted to sing like David Vanian (The Damned). As life makes decisions for you, I found that I sang exactly like Ian Asturbury (The Cult) and played like Captain Sensible (The Damned). Whatever the case, this album changed my life. I still remember the day I first saw this video. It was like hearing Jesus for the first time. It literally led me on a new path.
I see lot of Jim Morrison in Ian Astbury´s performance and voice. Great band!
One of the best songs of the 80’s, I instantly turn it up, when it comes on the radio to this day.
1 of the best song intros ever, for sure. Try thier song Rain, if u haven't yet.
This is the most accurate description of this song period.
This guy is class
I keep coming back to this song as I do enjoy it so much.
Still after all these years the song is phenomenal. Im still speechless just like you are when I watch it
This song is responsible for more than one speeding ticket.
I Never, Ever get tired of this song. It's in my vault of best songs ever. One of the greatest riffs ever....just one good ole Rock tune you never want to end.
The greatest album song ever written. #thecult #love #sanctuary #whitefalcon
Ian Astbury once toured with the surviving members of the Doors filling in for Jim Morrison and did a tremendous job.Check out some of those performances
That must've been a near-perfect fit! As I was listening to this it occurred to me how much he reminded me of Morrison, so loved seeing your comment!!
I watched this because I love this song and the band. I'm in Texas with 102 degrees heat, a busted ankle, my air conditioner broke, and so did my clothes dryer. You just made a bad weekend better. Thanks!🙏
You need clothes dryer when it's 102 ? .
@tonymarshall5815
You are correct. Fortunately, throwing it outside was my best option. Funny response!
I feel you, a Brit living in Texas for 14 years now, it’s a little warm! This is more appropriate right now.

I bought this album when it was new and I still listen to it often to this day.
My favorite Cult song ❤
I saw them live back in the days . And " Guns n Roses " opened up for them.
Was dance floor smash when it first came out , one of those songs that begged the DJ to crank past ear bleeding decimals ! I know , I was one of them ! Great choice there !
Seen them in Scotland when Sanctuary was released ~ 85/86 The Love tour ,,, i was only 15 years old ,, the whole joint was lifting ,epic! 👍
My neighbors listen to this song every day…..whether they want to or not.
Glorious!
I saw Guns n Roses open for The Cult in 1987 at The Saenger Theater in New Orleans. Great show!
Harri you became A Rock N Roll Fan , now you understand why we love this love
He didn't have a choice; I became a patron on his channel!
czcams.com/video/jAw56pjKfaM/video.htmlsi=LBOfGjCGZzwUIo5N
Seen them live over 100 times bro. Best band ever. He taught Rose to do what he does man.
Billy Duffy rocking the Gretsch White Falcon- the Cadillac of guitars. Billy D a truly underrated guitar player
the most fire band I have see in live
Great reaction!!! Great song!!!
Thank you.Really.Thank you.
You're welcome!
I was lucky to see them live, long ago. I remember it was at Red Rocks amphitheatre and they opened for Metallica.
I saw The Cult in 1987 at the Waikiki Sheraton Ballroom. They were fantastic!
One word magnificant
One of the best rock and roll songs ever recorded.
The singer is Ian Astbury, I did know them before GNR, his and axl rose’ stage presence is very similar, but they sound entirely different. I love both bands!
Ian's vocals are better, for sure.
Ian’s voice and axl’s also are incredibly unique, Ian’s is more controlled, axl’s is all over, both are great imo!
I do love ‘the cult’ solid sound, great songs.
Ian is one of my Fav singers of all time. He has a seat at the table with the likes of Chris Coronel, Steven Tyler, Ozzy, and a new comer, Michael Paulson!
The “Love” album one of the best ever. One great song after another 😉
Ian came before Axl !!! And Ian was still amazing onstage a few years ago, back on tour. Love Love
Brilliant, love this track. Volume on loud very loud. Never get tired of listening to it 👌
The Cult should be on everyone's 80's alternative rock playlist.
I once went to go see the one and only Peter Murphy at a club in NYC and this song was bangin' all over the place! It was like a surreal, lucid dream! Everyone just had smiles of surprise and love on their faces...looking at one another and dancin' their asses off! Ian is so incredible! #NativePower (Be sure to check out The Mission U.K.!)
The Mission - Deliverance: czcams.com/video/U8XP7F8rLpc/video.html
This band was a real party starter.
A lot of the post punk rock music of the eighties wasn't on the radio or MTV. I only ever heard this song at dance clubs. We would go dancing and hear the music and then troll the records stores looking for the music to buy. I only saw this video once at the Paladium in San Francisco in the late eighties...Ian has such cool dance moves. At least some of these groups toured and we would go to concerts that cost five to 25 dollars. I saw Ministry for $10 at the I-Beam and Clan of Xymox for $5 at Berkeley Square.
Best years of our life when music was kicking ass
When this song came on in any club in the 80's? Girls went off dancing and the entire mood elevated to extreme levels quickly! Great jam & even a better reaction Harry! Love your channel Bro, keep up with the great content!!
Brilliant Album
Hey bro!!! Good reaction. Thanks. I saw them live. They're amazing!!! Greettings from Argentina
I HAVE SEEN THE CULT MANY TIMES,,ALSO SAW IAN,,(LEAD SINGER), WITH THE 3 ORIGINAL MEMBERS OF THE GROUP THE DOORS,,IAN CAME OUT WITH A BLACK LEATHER JACKET WITH DARK SUNGLASSES LIKE JIM MORRISON,,THE CROWD WENT NUTS!!!!!!!
This is one of the most rhythmically dynamic rippers of the entire 1980s.
I could listen to this every day and it would never grow old. No wonder
" Love " is arguably their best album.
Wow!¡!! EXTENDED VERSIO!!!
The Cult: Topless dancers' most requested group. . 👍
Finally! Someone is reacting to The Cult! Highly underrated band. IMO
Billy's guitar riffs is what drives the song! But, yeah Ian's vocals were amazing. Also, this is the edited long version. Very cool! Not to many reactors react to this version.
Harri reacts to songs selected by his patrons. I selected this extended version. Why not more sanctuary? Glad you liked it!
Pure gold... 👍👍👍
I could watch his footwork all day long..it still blow-minds after all this years, the cult is power,I love it and you dear Harry do a beautiful job
I was 25 when this came out in 1985, my older brother Stuart introduced it to me, Stu always knew a good band, he listens to loads. Well, Stuarty boy, this wonderful song still rocks me at 63, thanks lad. 💙🏴
Rock and Roll.
And the lead on a hollow body...
Peace on earth.
I remember getting this record when it first came out. Thanks to KUSF in San Francisco and the Rough Trade record store South of Market. So much great music in the eighties.
The Cult was big for me in high school. Ian was a special frontman!
Great song. Bring so much memories.
I have been pleading with other reactors to react to this video for so long. No exaggeration that this is I feel one of the best rock songs of all time. You nailed it. You can't sit still. I dare say Ian Astbury dwarfs Axel Rose as a frontman and could go toe to toe with Stephen Tyler. Consider me subscribed just for reacting to one of my most favorites of all time. You have exquisite taste or very astute subscribers. Or both.
@mwbrada I appreciate your kind words and for noticing. I'm a subscriber but also an 'All-access" patron on Harri's channel. I'm guaranteed to have four songs and the versions I choose at my membership level reacted to by Harri. Anything over 7 minutes counts as two songs. Harri dug "Fire Woman" czcams.com/video/jAw56pjKfaM/video.html last month so I had to give him an extended dose of Sanctuary. Thanks again for the compliment.
Hey man, i met and hung out with The members of the CULT after a show in Denver. They were all really cool, Matt Sorum was drumming for them at that time.🥁☮👍
Guns and Roses , was the back up band for THE CULT !!! in around 1987....also later on The singer...Ian Astbury , toured with the rest of The Doors and sang Jim's vocals , for a few years....I'm Like number 601....Peace Harri
Rain is the next go to song mate. EPIC ❤🎉
My band ❤
I saw the Cult live in 1990-the day the Berlin Wall came down.
aaaaaahhhhhhh! watch ian all day. sounds good to me.
Beautiful song..best when very loud
One of my all time favorite rockin tunes!
What a great song.
One of those songs that u just cant PAUSE !!!!
The Cult's "Edie" is a great song as well.
One of my 2 favorite songs by "The Cult." The other one is "Edie."
So moving (Ciao Baby). .
Guns N Roses opened for the Cult when Appetite for destruction was released and it wasn’t catching on. Ian had a talk with Axl and said “Listen, you’ve got an incredible album, be patient, it’s going to breakout.” Then it sold 25 million copies, so Ian was around years before GnR or even Hollywood Rose. One of the things that shaped Ian’s style was a visit to a Native American reservation when he was young, this song is about the maternal nature of the Earth - the ‘Earth Mother’, that’s who ‘she’ is.
Roll forward a few years and hit the live house of strombo live version, it’s fire 🔥
This whole ALBUM, LOVE was awesome
Great reaction to a great band
