    Your recount of Korea's devastating past and its residual effects is one of many reasons I have such respect for BTS and the hardship they have endured especially when compared with Western artists, (at least the well off anglo-saxon ones).
    Not many western artists, ( if any) have had to deal with the intense societal, scholastic, and mandatory military service pressures that BTS, ( and other Idol's) have to deal with. Don't know if I articulated that right, my brain has a lot it wants to say but can't organize it well!
    Anyway, thank you again, especially for the historical context.

    That clip that describes how M countdown and the like works, is from the Uk. Top of the pops was a music show that would have acts that were in the top 40 UK singles chart that week (our billboard), there was no voting, it was just a reflection of records sold. This is what most UK people would be familiar with when you say a music show. I think that’s the reason he said it’s like a cross between TOTP and X Factor. With X factor there is audience voting. You could also never have a debut on TOTP, you have to already be in the charts, whereas X Factor you can be seeing someone for the first time. It’s not a perfect analogy, but I think for a UK audience it gets the general idea across.

    Like a final trick on the sleeve
    It creates a buzz
    It is said that some companies are good at poaching talents from debuting companies and depending from their strategy
    The poached talent may be offered a better deal or is used as a pawn in a larger scheme.
    Meaning talents are hard to come by so if you plush them from competition
    It helped your own game
    There are exit fees to a contract but a big company may afford it or a rich trainee may wave it.
    Trouble with trading it doesn’t guarantee a place on the stage.
    Like in the model industry a trainee must payback the investment made by the agency.

    The more I watch you the more my desire to visit Korea starts to seem like it's a real possibility. There's so much I'd like to see in person 😁
    Also, the people who criticize the Korean idol training system from outside are somehow almost never interested in criticizing the Western versions. It's just racism. I promise every entertainment industry has problems.
    I want the system to be a good one in both cases. I think there's some really good movement toward artist engagement in k-pop, and an expansion of creative control. We also see more artists publicly supporting each other, which I really like.
    I grew up in theater, so the youth of idol trainees isn't an automatic issue for me. A reason to hope care is being taken yes, a problem in itself no. Every time someone points it out I ask them to look into youth athletes. It's a similar amount of discipline with similar downsides.

      @@komerican-og I'm not shocked we agree 😁 it's a nuanced reality and that makes it hard to talk about. I really appreciated your plea for everyone to remember that they're kids - generally very sweet kids. There's a lot of pressure to work well with others and anyone who doesn't take criticism well will fail out fast 😂 so it's not surprising the ones who succeed are generally nice people.
      I don't think we all talk enough about the rest of the creative teams - we focus on the idols because they're the faces of the work, but the teams behind those performances are amazing. And if the same people are staying in those roles long-term, that's solid evidence for a good work environment.
      I want a future where idols, if and when they step down from performing, will have an easy transition into whatever aspect of the industry appeals to them most, because they will have had opportunities to explore those roles.
      Bummer no one's asking me 🤣 but still, I think there are good people (like Suga) who share that vision.

    Thanks for your reaction, you really show us how things were, something the Western mind might not have understood. However it crosses my mind, I think it's mentioned later, is the high suicide rates amongst the kids. Ages 10-19 due to the pressures, and that SK had the highest in the world! I think this is where BTS were speaking to their peers not to give up and live to have a dream to pursue. I could be wrong, but that is how I understood it. Perhaps you could speak more to this when you watch the episode.

    • @komerican-og
      @komerican-og  Před rokem +3

      The pressure from the parents and society as the growth slows down is difficult. The hyper -competitive nature is difficult to control and there seems to be little they can do. It is really difficult to tell parents to stop pressuring kids to do well in school. However, low.. very low birth rates in Korea and more options in life are slowly changing some parents' minds. However, much social effort has been put in to prevent suicides and raising the understanding of mental health issues. Before, getting any counseling or psychiatric help was deemed for crazies. These days it is much more accepted. It is hard to explain about a society that was very unstable for longest time. Unspoken sentiment that if you are not strong enough to survive, perhaps it wasn't meant to be, type of mentality was common. A good example of such thoughts would be ' Your grand dad almost died from starvation and was too poor to recieve any education. He ended up getting shot during the war.... and you are complaining about sitting in a nice warm room with a full belly cuz you have the luxury of studying?' This is common way people looked at life. It is changing but it takes time.

    I just subscribed and I’m trying to catch up on your channel with all your Content and this particularly interest me because I am from Michigan ,Motown area! And I lived during that area cause I’m a little older than you! Berry Gordy was not the first to establish A record label Motown sound really didn’t start taking off until the 1960s! it was Cadillac records and that’s where he got the idea from Mr. Leonard Chess of Cadillac records or Chess Record company in Chicago Illinois where the soul/ Blues and R&B sound was developed ,where the it started in the 1950s! Berry Gordy knew about Cadillac records and he wanted to develop something similar in Detroit Michigan! So that Motown sound was kind of a copy cat/piggy back of the Cadillac record sound in Chicago Illinois.
    The K-pop South Korean entertainment company started literally with Lee Soo Man, he’s really the godfather of KPOP he’s the one that started the trainee program that we know now and I definitely know because I have friends who work in the business and they told me They actually met him back in the late 80s and he got a lot of some ideas from the new boy bands that were starting in the west or in the United States and he developed a certain type of system that is still being practice today with the other k-pop companies. Bang Shi Hyuk The founder and chairman and ex CEO of BIGHIT/ HYBE Labels entertainment company ,wanted to start his own company because he was working with JYP before he started his own company that’s where he got his ideas from! So what I’m saying here is technically nobody is in originator of something unless you can trace it back to who was the first person to actually establish some thing then everybody else started copying and piggybacking off of the main source company of K-pop!

      Ooh.. great info on Cadillac records. A kindred soul I see. I do agree with you in most aspects. However, my view is that most systems do piggyback but evolution or enough originality should be respected too. I do agree Lee Sooman should be applauded for his work. He was the first crazy dude who set this up in Korea. I got into KPOP researching Business systems so my perspective might be a bit different. I focused on Business side of set up and marketing methodology more than the creative process. Hope I can learn more from you. See you around.

    Excellent commentary as usual. Thank you!
    I have a question that I've been wondering about in Korean education. According to a BTS guide, the members are all fluent in Japanese. Is this because it is taught in regular school or would they learn it in their trainee education? Or on their own? Also is there any overlap of Korean & Japanese at all? Or is it 100% different? Is there a difference between the generations in Korea regarding how much Japanese they would know? Would you regularly hear Japanese spoken in Korea? Like we hear Spanish spoken in the US?
    In the states (at least where & when I grew up), we took some foreign language in high school & college, but depending on your school, you could choose which one. (Spanish, French, & German are the choices I had, for instance.) For me at least, those classes alone were not enough for fluency.
    My friend who grew up in Norway said that they started taking English in 3rd grade & continued on, so by the time I met her in college, she was nearly as fluent as I was. I was just curious what Korea does. Please know that I mean no offense, & I apologize if any of my questions are offensive. (Also please let me know if they are, so I'll know!) I just like to learn from people & you explaining from your perspective is so much better than Google. 💜

    • @komerican-og
      @komerican-og  Před rokem +12

      Having a curious mind can not be and should not be deemed offensive. It is a wonderful thing. Japanese is not a must in Korea. Also, we do not hear Japanese on the streets. Almost never. Two languages are completely different. You can choose as one of your second languages in high school. However, the required level is much lower than US. As far as speech is concerned. The reason they speak Japanese is because Japan has 2nd biggest music market in the world. It is targeted so the company makes idols learn the language. As far as similarity is concerned, Japanese is the easiest language to learn for a Korean. Many of the word origin comes from Chinese words. Because we used to and they still use Chinese characters as part of their written language. So many words share the same root. Just like Latin origin for many western languages. The reason it is very easy for Korean is that the grammatical structure of the two languages is very similar.
      Also, Japanese have limited sounds they can make of which Koreans have no problem pronouncing them. The reverse is not true. So, Koreans can pick up Japanese faster than any other language. Older generations, such as my father's generation or older, went through Japanese occupation. They had to learn Japanese and were not allowed to learn Korean. We had to change our name to a Japanese one etc. Basically a cultural genocide. Therefore, Korean people have a certain feeling about Japan as a country. We don't really hate the Japanese as people. Many love their culture. It is a complicated matter but if you do some research, you will find that the Japanese Gov. has been changing history to deny their past. Hence the Korean dismay. The two culture is entirely separate culture. Different ideologies, aesthetics, religion, food, language, social structure, personalities etc. Just all different for thousands of years. Hope this helped. See you next time. Just think of England and France. Both find linguistic roots to Latin but see how different they are. And the wars they had. Lol. However, we have always been on the receiving end. (This is understandable in a way. Japanese felt trapped in their islands and Koreans never really wanted the islands so....)

    It saddens me that some people have been needlessly mean to you on the channel. You are always so respectful toward BTS and any critiques you have are constructive, honest and polite. There's no need at all to lash out or anything. I'm glad you keep making videos and sharing your insight with us.

      Oops. I confused Korean expression with Enlish. The color of earth, or brown would have been more appropriate. If you find Korean landscape from that time you would see barren mountains. And you are correct about nothing coming from vacuumed. Idols are just a microcosm of Korean society. All kids go through rigorous life with sleepless nights and exhausting work, if you want to have a chance to succeed. It is getting much better though.

      The phrase "no pain no gain" comes to mind, BTW. Koreans chose to sacrifice themselves to have better lives for future generations. Because it has been horrendous in the past. However, now things are better, I truly hope they slow down a bit. However, values and habits don't change easily. Good news is that things are getting better.
