  • The much publicised protest "The Canaries have a limit," took place in Arrecife in Lanzarote on 20th April. We were there to explain to you what the protest was all about, show you video of the protest, the people and the placards, and sum it all up for you at the end, as we walked back to our car.

    Thank you Michael for a very interesting video, my wife and I have been visiting the island for many years and have seen the increase in tourism and fully understand the issues that the protesters were voicing.
    Similar issues we experienced whilst we lived in Cornwall, second home buyers, locals not being able to afford to rent let alone buy,the increase in the population during the holiday season put tremendous strain on the infrastructure, emergency services and resources!

    This struggle is legitimate. I knew Lanzarote 30 years ago, and seeing what this island has become fills me with sadness. It used to be clean, secure, with no need for police presence since tourists were respectful, being nature lovers. Lanzarote has fallen victim to its own success, to mass tourism, to speculation, and to corruption. Nowadays, there are drug problems and thefts. Prosperity has attracted all sorts of unsavory individuals believe this is the fate of all paradisiacal places on Earth.Only those who knew the island more than 10 years ago can comprehend how detrimental this change has been, both for the residents who suffer from it and for tourists who uphold certain values. It's sad

      Something needs to be done about that awful main drag in Puerto del Carmen. It's chav central come the evening. A better classier cliental of tourists need to be attracted. I first went to Lanzarote 15 years ago and that resort nearly put me off Lanzarote. Thank goodness I discovered Cost Teguise not long after, and from there Arrecife, where I now tend to holiday.

      @@WalesktfI agree. The tourists coming now are as chavvy af. Loud, brash, rude, drunk, disrespectful. Walking around without shirt on, and expecting to sit down to eat without the shirt too. Becoming outraged when asked to put a shirt on when getting in a taxi. The island was completely different 10 years ago. I'm ashamed to be British when I see how some of them behave!

    I support their manifesto. Lanzarote simply can not support the current level of tourism; when I see the new gigantic hotel, I think of all the water it’s using…and wonder where the profits are going, among other things. The government need to get a grip on this and stop the runaway development. The island is at a critical spot…once ruined, it can’t go back. Thanks for filming and explaining, Mike.

    Sadly this is happening across many countries right now...many properties around the world were bought up about 10 years ago and became commodity..rental properties..that is why now the world of a generation is lacking long term living. Also the greedy food retailers who stayed open during covid have really pushed prices of food so high..same with electric,gas and oil...all becoming billionaires. 2021-2024..the biggest transfer of wealth. Also the EU is also helping to house people from Africa, Ukraine and The Middle East. All these problems are components of greed.

      I'm Welsh too and suffer with the same problems as you. Hence I'm on Lanzarote every November for two weeks, and January/February for another fortnight. When I stay, I never stay in an all inclusive hotel. I always rent a property. I spend my money in as many Spanish/Lanzarote bars/restaurants/cafes. Hence I stay in Arrecife and not one of the three main tourist areas. I would like to buy a property there one day and would have liked to have lived there full time. However, due to the muppets that voted for Brexit I can no longer do that.

    I absolute support their claims. We know Lanzarote from before Covid and it was never a problem to visit a place. It was peaceful, not too many people. But in the last two years, no matter where you go there are masses of people. We used to visit the bodegas in La Gueria and last year I was shocked how many busses were in the parking lot. It was so overcrowded that we took flight. Since then we have decided to not rent a car anymore but to stay local und visit what is able to do within a walking distance and hope that these masses of people are only an after Covid phenomenon.

    I have certainly noticed the rapid expansion in tourism since we first came to Lanza. Its so noticeable how restaurants and other businesses are struggling with staff etc. Playa Blanca is not as attractive as it used to be. After recently opening a 1700 bedroom mega hotel, the Cabildo have now approved a new 659 bed hotel to be built. Madness.

    • @LanzaroteInformation
      @LanzaroteInformation  Před měsícem

      You mean, of course, the 700 bed hotel, rather than 1700.
      I keep hearing people taking about hotels, but note that Lanzarote has fewer hotel beds than we had in 2017. The issue isn't hotel beds. The "madness," as you put it, is the beds in privately owned properties that are being let out for holidays. That's where the huge explosion in tourism has come from.

    • @ianappleby8426
      @ianappleby8426 Před měsícem +1

      @LanzaroteInformation yes indeed, 700 not!t 1700. Nevertheless, it seems 'madness' that officials must be aware of issues and yet promote more rooms. Every hotel room puts a demand on the infrastructure and unless extra capacity is put into the systems, surely it will break down. Make extra capacity and then build the rooms. Not the other way round, surely.

    • @janiceturton7756
      @janiceturton7756 Před měsícem +1

      agree with you Ian, although we stay PDC. those massive hotels and if All inclusive means many dont spend money in the town and it goes to big corporate businesses.

    • @LanzaroteInformation
      @LanzaroteInformation  Před měsícem +1

      @@ianappleby8426 But there aren't more rooms in hotels - today we have 65,000 hotel beds, in 2017 we had 74,000. The extra capacity is in private lettings and that's where we need to reduce the numbers. That's why the new letting law is so important, because currently, it so easy for anybody who owns a place here to put it on the market for holiday letting.

  • @mikeranderson3010
    @mikeranderson3010 Před měsícem

    Very informative vlog Mike. It is a concern to Lanzarote residents that the infrastructure has fallen behind so badly. There should be a priority of new builds for locals, another desalination plant asap. The Cabildo do not help though when a new 1700 bed hotel is built and approvals given for another one with 700 beds and they are struggling to obtain staff. Another thing you mentioned was the cruise ships which dock several times per week and deposit thousands of people who probably spend very little in comparison to the overcrowding they cause. This became an issue for Venice who I believe have now reduced/ stopped cruise ships from entering their canal. The Canaries are beautiful islands and some controls on numbers will have to be introduced for the benefit of locals.

    One way to help locals get back into affordable housing would be the local government puts a ban on all advertising of short term holiday lets ( less than 6 months ).
    Anyone found to be advertising any type of short term holiday rental would face huge fines… a lot more property would instantly get put on the market, and due to the inability of holiday letting, it would drive prices down as investors would not get an attractive return. We have been visiting the canary’s for well over 30 years now and it’s getting worse each year..We fully support the true canaries residents & we look forward to seeing tourists numbers drop substantially & the get rich quick companies move away..

    • @LanzaroteInformation
      @LanzaroteInformation  Před měsícem

      For sure, we need to reduce the number of homes being let out to tourists, but we don't need to stop it all together - it's a question of balance, and hopefully will be addressed by the new letting law going through The Canarian parliament shortly.

    Tourist numbers have increased to beyond pre Covid levels everywhere. I doubt if anything will or can change as strong enforceable measures to limit or reduce tourist accommodation on the islands will be met with opposition. The local governments are better off trying to build new resident only accommodation so that workers can improve their quality of life.

      All fine and dandy, just as long as the landlord can evict you if you don’t pay the rent.
      My understanding is that this is a problem that landlords have to weigh up when choosing long term (locals) or short term (tourists) as tenants.
      The rights of tenants has caused this issue.
